Aww thanks Nancy. Please do check out my other gel plate tutorials. I have more planned to and if you're in the UK I'm hoping to do classes soon. Gail x
Hi Jennifer, yes isn't it awesome!? I love this technique. I hope you have fun experimenting with it. I should have more videos coming soon with different techniques...I've just moved so all has been a bit chaotic. Xx
Yes, make sure everything is dry between layers of ink, paint or whatever you are using. I hope you enjoy having a go. I'm hoping to make some more videos using this process soon. It's such an enjoyable way to use the plate 😀
Gail, thanks so much for posting this tutorial. Your instructions are perfect. I do have one, maybe two questions: where did you purchase the small doilies? Are they plastic so they can be reused? Thanks again. I've searched, but no luck.
Hi Eileen, sorry about the delay in replying. I've just moved so very tired. I'm so glad you enjoyed the tutorial. That technique and building up with the inks etc is one of my favourites. I think I bought the doilies off someone that was destashing stuff ages back so I don't know where they got them but I can tell you they are like a paper that has been coated in something to make them stronger and more reusable. Sorry, I Couldnt be more helpful on that front. Xx
Dear Gail!! Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing process!! I have a quick question for you: The acrylic paint, is special or it could be any brand? I usea local one, Politec, and it didn´t work, so I wonder if is a matter of the brand?
Hi Gustavo, glad you found the tutorial useful. To do the image transfer pull I find liquitex heavy body Paynes grey works best for me where some other brands haven't worked very well at all. It also depends on the magazine you use. If it is a magazine that has worked for you as a pull before, I suggest changing the acrylic. It's definitely a lot of trial and error. Good luck. Let me know how you get on. I will be doing lots more gel plate videos soon and also setting up a Patreon for extra gel plate content if you're interested. 😊
@@gailjuliemakes Thank you so much! I will try again, as you said, is a matter of trials and errors, but is good to know that I could use the Liquitex product so I do less errors. Yes, I´ll let you know. Thanks again!
Hi I enjoyed this. I have been trying to do the image transfer technique using Vogue pages and also laser prints from home office and from Staples and many types of acryllic paints applying thinly and thicker tons of experiments and I am not getting a transfer. All the paint is going on the magazine and or laser print and nothing is transfering onto the plate. any suggestions?
Thanks for watching Debbi. I've just put up a laser image transfer video that you may want to watch. Vogue works for me. Have you tried the liquitex heavy body paint? That nearly always works for me. Is your gel plate new or old? I get my best results from my most used and oldest plate. I have just bought a big plate and need to wear it in because it's just not responding how I want it to at the moment. Hope that helps. I find thicker paper or even card works best to pull and you can leave on the plate for a bit longer without worrying about it tearing (see my new video). Gail x
@@gailjuliemakes thank you so much for taking the time to leave this response. I am hoping the reason I’m having a problem is because the plate is relatively new. I’ve probably tried image transfers and probably tried about 40 or 50 now and then very unsuccessful. I’ve tried liquid tax and all other paints. Maybe I just need to use it for a while. I tried treating it with mineral oil. I am not going to give up, but maybe I should just use it for a couple weeks search and try image transfers from time to time. It’s pretty funny how frustrating it is.
@@debbisinger146 yes definitely keep trying. It's great when you finally find the materials that work for you. It sounds silly but I am very scared of working in the new plate. Wish I could instantly get it to that used state but I know I just have to get stuck in and not have a set outcome in mind. Definitely let me know how you get on if you try it again x
@@debbisinger146 not long at all...I show how long I leave it on in real time. Just place it down and give the back of it a bit of a rub then remove straight away...you don't want it to dry on there and the magazine paper sticking to it. Hope that helps. Gail xx
Hi. I live in the US and was fascinated by those “boilers”. Are you actually saying “DOILIES”. The auto text on the TV writes boilers. Where can I find some? Please. Thanks
Yes, I said doilies he he...you know what that crazy auto text is like. I actually got this set from a craft seller online but you can also get paper doilies on Amazon. X
@@gailjuliemakes Thanks for your response. I’ve been looking for the same or similar kinds of doilies on Amazon I have not been successful. What craft seller did you buy them from please?
Can I ask why you add the buff acrylic please? I’m trying to master the art of image transfer, not that successfully atm. I’ll buy vogue today, I’ve ordered liquitex. I’ve been using copy paper and not adding that extra buff coat, any tips please? Btw I’m just round the corner in good old lincolnshire 😊
Hi Julie, hope you're well and thanks so much for your interest in my tutorial. I add the layer of buff to effectively pull the image transfer and embellishments off the plate because they have dried by this stage. If they are not dry you can just try pulling without an extra layer but I find this risky. You don't have to use buff, it can be any colour that you feel would work as a background colour (I find titanium white a bit stark sometimes which is why I used buff on this occasion). If you do not want to use a colour but just pull as it is and it is dry you can use Matt medium. I hope this helps. I have had a long break due to moving but am hoping to get back to making regular videos over the next few weeks. So you should see lots more Gel plate videos and I am hoping to set up a Patreon this year so I can share even more content. I have family that live in Lincolnshire...lovely place too. Gail xx
That’s something to look forward to 😊 more TH-cam and Patreon - thank you for getting back to me, just need to sort paper now, then try making some art 😬
@@juliegreens2f the paper is definitely a tricky part and depends what effects you want, for example I bought a newspaper print pad which I love for pulling fluid acrylics, it seems thin but actually works really well if you've got a thinner, quick drying time kind of paint. But for the pieces that have thicker paint and inks etc I like to use the 300gsm card. I'm just pondering how I'll do Patreon...I will probably do a couple of gel plate tiers, a cheaper one for extra tutorials and then maybe a slightly more expensive one where you get rewards like stencils/masks or texture tools etc. Would you be interested in any of that? Good to guage from a viewer. X
Hi Deborah, sorry only just getting back to you. I pulled these onto multifarious card by a UK company called Lavinia Stamps - it's 330 GSM I think - so nice and thick. 😀
I got a Vogue magazine expecting it would work perfectly, as so many others have experienced-literally 0/10 transfers worked. I cannot fathom what is going wrong. I’ve tried less paint, more paint, more fluid paint…. It is a rather warm day where I am, I don’t have AC but I had a fan on. I can’t imagine the room temperature could’ve sabotaged the transfer that much……. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong…
Sorry to hear it hasn't worked for you. I am in the UK and Vogue always works for me...I wonder if Vogue is printed on different paper- stock depending on which country it is printed in...this may well affect the effectiveness of the pull. Temperature could be a factor too as you mentioned. I hope if you decide to carry on trying, it will finally work for you.
@@gailjuliemakes Yea from what I’ve seen a lot of people have talked about using “Italian” Vogue or some European print. I haven’t used it since this comment but will probably try again at some point with a heftier print
Hi Ann, sorry I'm only just getting back to you. It's been hectic times with moving house and getting a new job. I can't claim to be an expert but a lot of water soluble products do not work as well on the gel plate due to beading up etc. My advice is just to experiment until you find something that works for you. My favourite for image transfer is Liquitex heavy body Payne's Grey for the transfer and then Dina Wakley acrylics for pulling off the plate. I do like using inks (that do react with water like distress oxides) for backgrounds though. Hope that helps. Gail x
