  • Join my family as we fly the TBM 850 from San Antonio, TX (5C1) to Marco Island, FL (MKY). Yes, traveling with kids is hectic, but I am grateful to have an awesome copilot wife that always keeps the "cabin" under control...
    As a Cirrus pilot/owner, it's a game changer having the pressurization and capabilities of a turbine aircraft such as the TBM. I share this video to inspire all aviators looking to step up their flying!
    Thank you for watching, and feel free to reach out for any suggestions, comments or questions!

    The History of Socata TBM (now Daher TBM)
    The SOCATA TBM (now Daher TBM) is a family of high-performance single-engine turboprop manufactured by Daher. It was originally collaboratively developed between the American Mooney Airplane Company and French light aircraft manufacturer SOCATA. In fact, "TB" stands for Tarbes, France where Socata was located, and "M" stands for, you guessed it - Mooney!
    The design of the TBM family originates from the Mooney 301, a comparatively low-powered and smaller prototype Mooney developed in the early 1980s. Following Mooney's acquisition by French owners, Mooney and SOCATA started a joint venture for the purpose of developing and manufacturing a new, enlarged turboprop design, which was designated as the TBM 700. Upon its entry onto the market in 1990, it was the first high-performance single-engine passenger/cargo aircraft to enter production.
    Shortly after launch, the TBM 700 was a market success, which led to the production of multiple variants and improved models, often incorporating more powerful engines and new avionics. The TBM 850 is the production name assigned to the TBM 700N, an improved version of the aircraft powered by a single Pratt & Whitney PT6A-66D. In March 2014, an aerodynamically refined version of the TBM 700N, marketed as the TBM 900, then the 910 with standard G1000 NXi. The 930 arrived by 2016 with the G3000 flight deck, which was replaced by the 940 with autothrottles and autoland in 2019. As a crescendo in 2022, the magnificant TBM 960 has arrived, with the Fadec-controlled PT6E-66XT P&W engine (5,000 TBO). Daher TBM has become a powerhouse in business and personal aviation, around the globe with these impressively performing aircraft.
    If anyone has any questions on the TBM, aircraft ownership, or purchasing your first plane (to include a high performance pistons like a Cirrus), I'd love to hear from you, as my full time job is brokering aircraft at Mason Amelia. Feel free to reach out to me, and please subscribe, like, and share.
    Thanks for watching. Enjoy!

      Kurt,
      Thanks a lot for watching my video! I'm not sure your level of flight experience, so being thorough with my response.
      That is indeed a very good practice, not to have an unintended "roll back" of power. Flying lighter planes, Cessna, Mooney, Cirrus, you should basically trim the plane for it to rotate with a touch of back pressure.
      The Meridians, TBM, jets, are normally heavy, a two hand event, especially with varying CGs. Hopefully you trimmed appropriately too...
      Regardless, in the TBM or a twin jet, I guard the power levers until I'm at V1 (takeoff decision speed) or VR in a single for abort. Otherwise, passing V1/VR respectively, we're flying after that!

    Yepp. It is a lot more stressful to have kids but at the same time it is a lot more fun! I rarely fly anywhere without my wife and son. I mean, we belong together, don't we...
    Now my wife is taking her own flying lessons and since she is flying such a tiny airplane (BR23) she says that turbulence in the Malibu feels a lot more comfortable (probably due to the yaw damper). No complaints :)

    • @LookingforHigher
      @LookingforHigher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Rainer,
      Thanks for checking this video out. We’re normally flying a Cirrus around; so, my wife has nothing to complain about in the TBM, right?
      That’s pretty awesome that your wife is taking lessons. My wife, Melissa, “keeps her distance.” My family isn’t typically with me, considering the majority of my flying is for work. However, the Malibu is a family cruiser. We have had some enjoyable PA46 flights in our past as well. I bet yours loves it!

    • @rainerzufall689
      @rainerzufall689 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LookingforHigher I really like the Malibu. Only problem with it is, that many turboprops don't really feel like a "step up". The Silver Eagle sure is cool but not FIKI and not a single knot faster. The Jetprop sure is faster but lacks the range (as the SE) and the payload. The Meridian has the payload but that comes with low range and very limited climb/takeoff performance. Only if your thoughts reach the TBM you finally find a plane that has about the same range as the Malibu, more payload depending on the version - and the great performance. Only problem is that the cost are about 250% of the Malibu. But we will see where the world economy is going.
      I see it as some kind of rally. Will I first have the money or will my wife first make her instrument and HPA rating, haha.
      Anyway even now it feels pretty good when she knows what I am talking about, when I reference density altitude for instance. You know what I mean. Makes us feel even more connected - if that is possible after 20 years ;-) And when my son builds lego airplanes I hear him using my callsign for them already when he calls his lego tower - cute :)

      I'm currently debating a Phenom 100 or TBM 700 for 2024. I'm an ex airline captain with thousands of hours in turboprops and jets. I love the lower operating costs of the TBM, no type rating, lower insurance, I'm an A&P myself so I can save here and there on little stuff like tire changes etc. With the phenom, I can go up to 410, doesn't burn much more jet a(250lbs per side), already have the type rating, smoother ride, True Airspeed isn't much higher. I feel as though I'd be able to dry lease the phenom more attractively than the tbm. Theres a lot of demand where I live.

If you were just buying the, e.g M600/TBM for personal use, insurance would be a reasonable ~ 2% of hull (given your experience, pretty good). The complex time really helps. If you're putting it in a dry lease program, those rates will escalate quickly. If it's in a charter op, the charter company would may be able to provide the insurance, and you dispatch it part 91 for your personal flying - may be possible.

      Hi Roger,
      Yes, 90 KIAS is a good short final approach speed for the TBM. You can certainly truck it in at 120 KIAS + if you're in busy airspace, but with a 65 stall speed and those huge slotted fowler flaps, you can slow her way on down.

      The Meridian/M600 is the ultimate family machine with manageable operating costs. The TBM is the work horse with zero compromises… at a pretty penny. If you maintain the TBM to Daher’s phase inspections, you find 15% more speed for at lease 50% more costs.
      I prefer the TBMs ground and turbulent air handling, but M series is a great all around ride! Not, my experience is mainly in the Meridian, little in M600.

      @@LookingforHigher That's new(er) to new pricing though. An older TBM700 costs a lot less than an M600... and when flown less than 200h/year I think you'll have a lot of catching up to do on maintenance costs differentials. I was lucky though, got my '99 700B at 1800h with a fresh HSI and 10 year inspection, so hopefully the Dec inspection won't be too bad.
