- Welcome back to Lodge Life Season 2!
This week I am heading back to work after taking a week off. I said goodbye to Brent and Minnie and left 100 Mile House after getting new tires. The drive was beautiful down highway 97/1 all the way down to the coast.
The plane ride up was a little bumpy but we made it there safely! It's time to take the kitchen back from the Martens who have been causing some problems and messes for Christian to deal with. We've trapped and released a few more.
The dogs arrived the same day as us on a Seair seaplane with the owner, Tony and Chelsey and Kristin. Kristin is new to the lodge and will be coming and going through the season helping with dog care and whatever/whoever else needs help. She knocked at my door the other night to tell me that the aurora borealis was filling the sky and I was so excited to see it! Not only in one part of the sky but the entire sky was filled! It was so beautiful!

I also made some cheese from some milk that was going to be sour soon and I'm looking for ideas on what to do with the cream! Please let me know if you have any ideas! Im also sharing with you our favourite salad dressing recipe that we call Nooch. It's sooooo good on everything and I hope you give it a try!

I was fortunate enough to travel the USA and Canada for over 30 years. Retired now and living in Texas and I must say, the view from your office is some of the most beautiful country there is. And your videography is second to none. I'm catching up on your previous videos and loving every one of them. The sound of your voice, your style and grace, puts me in a state of relaxation that we all need these days. That's the only way I can describe it. Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your world. Thanks for the recipe tips,esp. the dressing. I remember that “special”sensation when flying in float planes that hit turbulence: Rivers Inlet, Waglisla and Ocean Falls….. in November(!). Missed the lights last week when I was in Northern BC..overcast. Lucky you, having the resort to yourselves now.

You should keep some kefir grains in the freezer. Just throw them into your expired milk
and thats it. Kefir is a wonderful base for fruity desserts, dressings and refreshing drinks
and can also be used as a meat tenderizer...

If you have a hot glue gun....Glue your bait to the floor of the trap....When they pull on the bait they push down on the plate and it works great too.
There’s gotta be a hot glue gun around here somewhere. Tying the pepperoni in the trap seemed to do the job also. Thank goodness.

That was a great video thanks.I used to manage Lake Alpine Lodge in California and had to deal with a family of martens.Big mess every morning never could figure out we’re they where coming in at ended up trapping six of them and transplanted them ten miles down road
It’s tough finding where the martens are getting in. I think I should set up a camera in the kitchen over night. There are a few holes that we know of and we are working on fixing.

First: you can also smoke the cheese, similar to a scamorza from Italy. Of course, cold smoking, i.e. smoking temperature below 50°C. Second: Good Hope is a summer house for three people plus staff? Okay, now I'm a little bit jealous... But a big thank you for letting us participate. With much joy and gratitude from Hamburg, Germany.
The private home is for the owner, Tony and his two sons. Through July and August they invite friends and family up to join them. Most of the time it is only staff here. We are all very spoiled. Thanks for tuning in. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

That marten is one mean little critter, clever too apparently! How the heck are they getting in there? Must be a small hole somewhere, maybe stuff a bunch of chicken wire in the hole to stop them
The martens have been causing a lot of problems and yes, you’re right. We need a strong chicken wire to close up some of these spots in the kitchen that we think they might be getting in from.

Hey Jenny my Dads cousins Terry and Ruth live a deca lake in 100 mile house wonderful place just made me think of them when you mentioned 100 mile house my wife and I stayed there when we bought a picker truck in Kelona a while back would love it move to that area Hi from Northern Ab
Thank you for sharing my your story! Deca lake is one of many in that area and they are all so beautiful. We lived on Sheridan lake for a couple years which is close by.
great videos. The Northern Lights are awesome, I've seen them from the Northwest Territories border and I could also hear them!!! They are a great reminder of the magnetic field that surrounds the earth and protects us from certain doom! The suns radiation would fry this planet just like Mars if we didn't have that field!

Those Martin's are very persistent round GHC. Always have been. As we are floating we don't get them and I think our dogs put them off too. As for expired cream!......in my world it's never expired. 😅. We only get fresh veggies or dairy about every 6 weeks so posted dates mean nothing. If your ever out and about, call in for a cuppa.
Thank you Sarah! 6 weeks is a while to wait for new dairy! I suppose our 2 week wait isn’t bad haha. We have caught over 10 martens this spring and now that they have left we are starting to trap the mice! It’s on or the other. I can see why a floating home would help so much with the critters.

But now I’m using Final Cut Pro and I learned even more from practice and watching other videos that are similar to mine. I am a friend of Ted's through my annual Duncanby trips since 2009 (Except COVID border closures 2020 and 2021) I have been to Good Hope once on a drive-by, and once for fuel in a float plane before heading back to Richmond. I'm glad I found your page here, and have subscribed. I've shared it with so many people who have joined me at Duncanby and everyone loves the vids...Hope to meet you someday and try the Nooch! We always stop in Sunshine Bay to drop off a bottle of wine for Robin and Sarah. We won't fish the head on our July 16th trip, but I love the inlet and it has grown on me. I'll bring you some of my hand painted salmon spoons that do so well there. Sid will get them to Ted or Dwayne, and they'll make their way to you at GHC. You are surrounded by great people there. Are you an old-fashioned trapper? You’re right we might need one ha ha thank you so much for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed. Editing is one of my favourite past times so I forced myself to start filming. learning to talk to the camera was the hardest part.
Those little Martins make a real mess, I had a battle with raccoons a while back and the only thing that I found worked is an electric fence, it doesn't hurt them physically but did it ever send them running. I know Great Bear Lodge in Smith Inlet used them around one at least one staff house and they wouldn't come near to it. If you try an electric fence be careful the dogs do not get shocked. Just love your videos and I liked the easy cheese recipe, it is always a good day to find a new video from you, I will share it.
Oh no! The raccoons! Thanks for the tip. If they continue making messes we will need to seriously consider this.

We have been releasing these little guys on a large nearby island. Hopefully they are thriving there. We are in their space so I am very sorry to them for inconveniencing their lives. But we all have to learn to live together. They just don’t learn very fast.

Those are beautiful knives and the stone. Some of them are bevelled one side only , bought for my wife's birthday, a prize possession decades later.
If you draw or push the knife as you pass across the stone your technique will improve greatly.
Also putting your right hand at the ' balance point' partly on the blade will help you maintain the angle .
Learning to switch to your left hand, for the left side will again help your technique a lot, but's a challenge for many.
You will need a diamond hone, flat glass plate with sandpaper etc , dogfish skin will do in a pinch 😁,,
to maintain the flatness of the stone.
The 97 is definitely a beautiful drive. I didn’t catch much of it as I was driving and I didn’t stop as I was in a bit of a rush to get down to the coast.
I loved the highway from Spence’s Bridge to Merritt. I wonder if they are rebuilding it?

Hi Jenny another great video and so enjoyed seeing the Northern Lights like that, first time I have seen a time lapse view of them, the whole wilderness around there is so beautiful. Now I do have a question relating to an earlier video I watched recently on the the water and power supply you have there and although retired now I trained and worked as a maintenance fitter for the City Council here in Wellington and worked on our city water supply and the Emergency Generators for the critical areas we were responsible for-- Airport/ Hospital and Civil Defense, everything just a little bigger than what you have there and when seeing where the fuel tanks and propane tank is at a higher elevation I saw that there is a road of sorts to get to them, now I see in this video there was a tanker on the barge but is there a landing in another bay that it drive up the road or can they pump up to the tanks from the shore, the road didn't look like one I would attempt with a tanker of fuel or propane ( LPG ) here. Hi John! Excellent question! There are pipes on the fuel dock that lead up the hill to the tanks and yes there is a pump.
There is a cement pad that allows vehicles to disembark from a barge if needed but I’ve only seen it used once when we replaced one of the generators.

I find it hard to understand why the lodge doesn't take the time to eliminate where the martins are getting in!
You’re not the first to comment this same question. We are working on the issue but it’s not easy as the martens can crawl through very tiny cracks. It’s an old cannery with many little cracks. But we are working on it. Thanks for asking!
