Patrick McGoohan was originally offered the part of Simon Templer, but turned it down. One of the reasons was that he thought the character should drive an Aston Martin. Astin Martin wanted payment and when it was rejected, Volvo offered the P1800 for free - but McGoohan wasn't interested.
Very interesting Stephen. At the end of my XJS video I gave my sources as an article in Practical Classics and The Saint.org. I loved the Saint. So it’s always useful to get more of the history. Have a good Xmas and new year.👍
Thanks. I never get tired of watching The Saint with Rodger Moore. Not sure if it was a DB4 McGoohan thought the character should have. Struggling to remember where I read of it now. Perhaps just a myth! More than one P1800 was used in the series and RM was given the use of one. Thought the interior was red, but could be wrong. 🎄 Happy Xmas 🎄
If you have a look on TH-cam there's a short video of the P1800's designer made a year after Rodger Moore died (2017). The interior appears to be dark blue in the short clip, I think. "Volvo P1800 Roger Moore The Saint Car"
