  • Harley-Davidson’s Pan America 1250 Special performs on and off the road with a killer engine, a capable chassis, and innovative features. Cycle World takes it for a ride to see how it performs.
Phone calls, emails, and text messages came flooding in when I posted a teaser photo after my first day on the 2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special. Well? How is it? Is it a competitor? And the most important question: Did they pull it off?
    Yes. Yes, they did.
Harley-Davidson has built a legitimate adventure-touring motorcycle. I’m going to get hate mail from both H-D loyalists and adventure fiends, but I’ll say it: The 2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special is the best motorcycle The Motor Company has ever produced.
There. I said it. I stand by it. Come at me. Harley has succeeded, much to the dismay of the social media naysayers.
Powering the Pan America 1250 is H-D’s new Revolution Max 1250, a liquid-cooled 60-degree 1,252cc V-twin. It’s a completely new engine designed from the ground up as the centerpiece, and structural chassis member, of the Pan America. Dual overhead cams are independently variable via cam phasers, operated by hydraulic pressure controlled by a solenoid plunger. Cam timing can be adjusted through 40 degrees of rotation, and because every cam has a phaser, front and rear cylinder valve timing are independent as well. Harley-Davidson pointed out that the drive-side cam journal is part of the drive sprocket, making it possible to remove the camshafts without disassembling the camshaft drive, simplifying service or upgrades. Roller-finger valve actuation is maintenance-free thanks to hydraulic valve lash adjustment.
Crankshaft connecting-rod journals are offset 30 degrees, making for a 90-degree firing order, which Harley claims produces more on-power traction in the dirt. Forged aluminum pistons stroke through 72.3mm in a 105 mm bore and feature a low-friction coating on the skirts, low-tension piston rings (again, to reduce friction), an anodized top ring land for durability, and underside oil jets for heat dissipation. The large bore requires the use of a dual spark plug design for complete and rapid intake-charge combustion. The compression ratio is 13.0:1, meaning the Revolution Max requires 91-octane fuel for best performance; knock sensors will trigger less aggressive ignition timing and fueling ratios. This will reduce the power, and although H-D reps declined to give a minimum octane number, they claim the engine can be run safely in regions with “low quality” gasoline.
Wow. That’s the short of it when describing the Revolution Max, and the first word my furry mug blurted out as I grabbed my first handful of throttle in Sport mode. Power comes on strong at around 2,200 rpm and continues to build with more and more velocity as you cross the 8,500-rpm mark. After that it begins to taper off in aggression until you reach the rev limiter at 9,500 rpm. That’s 9,500 rpm from a Harley. And while the low-end and top-end performance are impressive, it’s the middle of the digital tach that is the sweetest. Third gear is a set-and-forget mark for winding backroads, as the Max pulls with simple tenacity at the 5K mark to spring you out of the corners. The lean-sensitive traction control, C-TCS in Harley-speak, is the least restrictive in this mode and will let the standard, specially developed Michelin Scorcher Adventure tires do much of the work. The future of this engine is very bright indeed.
While Sport mode is the most aggressive and impressive of your choices, H-D has equipped the Pan America with Road, Rain, Off-Road, and Off-Road Plus modes. These modes are not only tied to engine performance but to suspension settings, engine-braking, and ABS settings. Road mode reduces that midrange stonk, but there’s still plenty of power on tap for any road work that doesn’t demand making the time between the corners short as possible. Rain mode reduces power significantly, but as there wasn’t even a chance of precipitation during our two-day test, only a quick confirmation of reduced power and maximum C-TCS was performed. Off-Road and Off-Road Plus provide a power level suited for dirt duty with a tractable character and reduced top-end power.

This is proof that if you build it, they will come. They put 100% effort in, and didn't cut corners to save money. That's all they needed to do. Nothing more, nothing less. The customers can sense the dedication, and the pride, that the engineers applied. I would buy one, just to support Harley Davidson. They deserve our money, by putting in so much effort. I worked at a Harley store for a couple years doing F&I. I had come from riding mostly Honda superbikes and then Ducati’s before that. I had thought I’d fell in love with those machines… and, maybe I did a little bit. But, no engine config has ever captivated and enraptured me like a Harley Big Twin (my 2020 HD Low Rider S - FXLRS). I appreciate this guy’s perspective a lot, but the fact that he is so enamored with the engine on this new ADV bike from Harley tells me that he’s never really been smitten by the classic Harley growl and the odd architecture that creates that sound. When I still worked there and did a demo day for the new Pan America, the first thing I noticed was how UN-Harley the engine actually felt. It’s a good bike, but not a Harley to me. Harley should just remain small, cut expenses, and continue to perfect and offer what they do best.
Harley’s identity is, in large part, wrapped up in a sound… and, secondarily, in a look… consisting of unbranded, simple, generic looking parts bolted together to CARRY an engine that MAKES that SOUND. That’s mostly it. I think that’s the best starting place… to acknowledge that. Then, where do you go from here?

Funny. I was thinking a 550 HD Super Legarra version would be cool. That 1200 is a lot of bike for older folks or shorter people - or a lot of women who trend to be shorter than men’s averages. And then a ‘character’ model variation applying post-modern engineering and design with the spirit of a FJ1100; it already has the cc’s and roll-on response that may perhaps even exceed the perfect FJ1100.

It was great to be able go to my local Harley dealer and pick up replacement mirrors and shift levers and clutch/brake levers. If they didn’t have it in stock (rare), they could get it in a few days. In contrast, My Z800 is a pain because my dealer has to order everything even for a basic oil change which can take 7-10 days. I ordered an OEM clutch lever for it and it took two weeks!

For me this engine is proof that the days of hot air cooled engines are over. And with the horse power these engines can
produce that are not overly huge I am sure a slightly larger version is in the works for the big heavy touring models such as the street glide special, Electra glide, road glides where two up riding and extra gear is carried. The ride mode technology is crucial now days so I am now convinced HD and upper management know they have to stay ahead instead of behind. I am sure my 2017 107 Milwaukee 8 street glide special will be replaced by a revolution max type real soon rather than later, This motor has less moving parts so it will be an ease of maintenance for customers and HD dealer mechanics to keep on the road and off lifts.

All adventure bikes are mostly ugly. I don’t think it matters with an adventure bike. That said, this is maybe the best looking adventure bike. The headlight put me off at first, but now it is starting to grow on me or at least not put me off. Maybe the Africa twin is as good looking? The Harley looks like a overgrown version of a vintage motocross bike to me. Great job HD.

Not knocking you at all but I find it funny that you (and others I've read comments from) call this bike "funky" etc... when describing the styling but say nothing about the looks of a GS, KTM, or Multistrada.... As if those bikes are what is "normal" in bike looks department. It reminds me of an old twilight zone episode where all these doctors and nurses are trying to fix a patients looks so that she can fit in to normal society. When they unmask her, she's beautiful. Just gorgeous! But then they say "we're sorry... We did everything we could do..." And when they pan out to the (until now) never seen doctors and nurses, they are all "monsters" (by earthling standards).

In fact, I would venture a guess that most non HD people that go into the dealerships to buy them are going to quickly understand what real service and dealerships look like for the first time in their lives (as opposed to the Ducati and BMW dealerships that are often times horrible).

Really want to like this bike....but....a dealbreaker.....The location of the battery and regulator/rectifier!!!???!!! In a water crossing that's just below knee level...the bike will short out. If you are riding in wet or rain....the spray from the front tire will spray onto the battery and rectifier. I would like it if someone could explain this? When you see this bike in person, the front radiator is low and the bottom of the radiator will be submersed in a water crossing just below knee level. Hot radiator being rapidly cooled may not be a good thing. This makes me think Harley chose the desert for this demo? Having said this, this bike is better than what I thought Harley was going to put out. They fix the battery and rectifier location...could be my next bike. Enjoyed the review! The only review I've seen on this bike with a wheelie and getting the bike airborne!

    • @themittonmethod1243
      @themittonmethod1243 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    *Observations*
Harley Davison motorcycles has gone electric (failed) and now going "adventure" bike (possible fail too). The company Harley-David (HD)
has been trying a lot of different things to survive.
Sadly most motorcyclist born these days don't like Harley *_unreliability,_* Harley culture, and Harley NO-customer service.
