I bought a Pan America: My First Ride Taking it Off-Road

- I decided to finally pick up the Harley-Davidson Pan America and add it to Motorcycle arsenal. My first ride is a local spot in south orange county, California near Cleveland National Forest. During the ride I go into my plans for accessories and modifications that I'll be making. I talk Pan America success and how adventure riding adds a new dynamic to most Harley-Davidson riders out there.

It’s beautiful watching a cruiser rider having that ADV epiphany moment. Comfort, power and versatility. The ultimate freedom machine 🇺🇸
Great video, great to see a TA being used in these conditions
Looks like a hoot
Kudos to you Matt, unlike other salesmen who say they ride the same motorcycle you're buying but they're bike is home, you really did it👍🏼You've proved the internet wrong that Harley dealership will not sell the pan am and steer customers towards classic models by putting down your own money. Pan am being a good bike or not, your dedication to work will take you places.
I hate kudos
100% agree
Hey Matt, That Deadwood Green Just makes that Bike! That will be my Pick when I Order one..
Bend over and pay $400 extra for a Color .. Indian did that on the FTR-1200 too for Purple .. Incdian's glory days racing bike colors..
Yea, I felt like it was suiting. It’s $250 not 400 like what numb nuts is saying. Enjoy the PA when you get one.
@@MattLaidlaw love the color Matt , enjoy the ride I’ve past my off road days
Jeff Seifert , any particular reason you randomly capitalize words? Just wondering.

“Supply chain issues”, I hear you! I just bought a 2021 Road Glide Special 3 months ago and getting accessories for it has been a pain in the butt! Great video though! Nice bike!
Yes. It bad right now. Enjoy the RGS.
I knew, absolutely KNEW this model was going to sell like crazy!
I took a test ride last week. Loved it... was putting down my deposit to buy one but they couldn't get me one with spoke wheels.
I know all the other goodies are out of stock.. but I have to have spoke wheels.
The production value in these ML videos surpass the motor company videos by far.
and there's real info in them as well , not just marketing hype . this is where i come when i'm interested in a bike , not the Harley website .
Thank you. I appreciate it. I’m always trying to up my production value
Honest content. I just purchased a 2022 a little south of you. Ordered full Panniers and racks and such... an easy 6 month wait...I made note of your roads. I'll be hitting them.
I live in North Idaho and half the roads are gravel and dirt. My PA is my 6th Harley from Lone Wolf H-D and the versatility of this bike is amazing. Less traffic and distracted drivers to deal with. Great review 👍🏻
Its been 20 years since I drove my old jeep over those trails. One of them actually drops you off in Corona off the 15 by Corona Lake. Glad to hear there selling well.
I think I saw that trail on the map. I’ll have to try that one next time
Its bedford motorway, and theres some controversy right now, about a week ago some guy tried chaining it off and standing in the road with a gun, saying its his private driveway, despite it being a well known trail the public has used for 60+ years. US Forest Service has temporarily closed it while people are looking for a legal solution. Socal jeeps facebook group has more info
Excellent video. I just completed a ride that was almost a mirror image of your ride, but here in Florida. I rode up to the top of Mount Dora in central Fl. (184 ft above sea level) Granted, the road up Mount Dora is paved, I rode my E/Glide Revival, and there weren't any drop off's, but it was very hot up in the 90's. I did bring some cold water though.
You got the Electra glide revival? Nice man! That’s a rad bike
@@MattLaidlaw 2 of them actually.
Now, that’s funny!
Lmao what a joke.uh yea man I did a ride similar to yours in Florida on the pavement at 184 feet above sea level 😂😂😂😂😂.gtfo Moran
@@bigmike9527 Yup. Almost a mirror image of Matt's ride other than the few minor differences I mentioned.😁
I have the same gear and went to the Rawhide Adventures ZAKAR site for training as well... At first, I wasn't a fan of those boots. But having spent a couple days solid wearing those boots there... and wearing them more and more after I got back home... I became a huge fan. They are super comfortable compared to my other off-road boots. Now I'm a huge fan. Love them. Also a huge fan of the rest of gear, especially the helmet.
Get yourself a Garmin Zumo XT with the local topo road maps and you’ll be good on navigation.
By far, you got the best color! Congrats! I wish it was still offered this year (unless more colors are coming).
I ran those Metzler Tourance tires for about a year and never really cared for them - when I switched over to Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR it was a game changer...both on and off road, hands down the best dual purpose moto tire!!
Your videos alone will help sell hundreds, maybe thousands of these. Very smart decision good sir. Looking forward to future content!

Thank you for the feedback. Thanks for the comment.
I know FortNine says to always wear high ankle hard boots, and hard plastic shielded gloves because broken ankles and broken wrists are the single most common motorcycle injuries. I guess when you crash a motorcycle, the ankle tends to take a lot of abuse, and when you fall off and catch yourself, it slams your hands on the ground, snapping your wrist. The hard shell gloves allow you to slide, instead of impacting. Soft leather boots will provide some protection, but hard boots would be far better, if you're planning on laying your bike down.
Hello how are you doing today
That little tab with the HD emblem on the front of the jacket is pretty cool. It looks like it's directly military inspired, as a tab exactly like that is found on modern military cold weather and rain jackets. Instead of the HD emblem, one would slide on a little sleeve displaying one's rank. I wonder if anyone's commented on that.
I’m thinking of one for next spring. I love the bike. Definitely a step forward
I just gave in my Street Glide Special and bought a Pan America Special at my local HD dealer. The reasons are that the SGS was way to hard to handle at low speed and the Pan Am is lot more matching my everyday life, including my passion to go out geocaching, which often leads you off road or to abandoned places. A great difference I noticed when doing my test ride on the Pan Am was the ability to do lane splitting - with high summer degrees I was stuck in a huge Autobahn traffic jam. Ridin’ my broad, heavy and wobbly SGS it would have been a horroble jerk ride and I would have stood for hours in the jam - with the slim and movable Pan Am I did lane splitting and left the jam behind me in a short amount of time. This was the moment my inner voice said - no it screamed - „go and buy this bike!"
The Pan Am is such a cool bike - I know people compare it to the GS, but with the street performance coming in at such a high level, it's more like an American Multistrada IMO. Trading my Road King in on a Black Special tomorrow and I'm both excited and nervous. I'm going to miss the hell out of the Road King, but looking forward to new memories and adventures with the new bike! I'm also looking for the tank pads and black aluminum panniers - can't wait to see more PA content!
You're gonna love it! My buddy got one 4 weeks ago and has 5400 miles on it already. He just got back from The Black Hills, and says it's the best bike he's owned out of 20 in the last 35 years. My other buddy rode one for an hour, and says it's better than the GS he used to own, but he wouldn't trade his 1200 Multistrada in on one.
Harley should hire YOU Matt as their marketing/advertising go to person. Your input and knowledge is better than any ad from any manufacturer I ever saw, not just Harley. If I lived in Ca. Id be using your dealership for sure. Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it) I live in Mass.
If you want to connect with Ortega Hwy on Main Divide, continue on the road you took to Santiago Peak (Main Divide). There is currently a locked gate near Blue Jay campground so unless you're willing to go off-trail, you cannot connect them
Good to know. I think I saw that gate the other day when I was up there. Thank you for the comment
Yeah, Rev It makes some nice gear! I have a couple of their jackets and a pair of gloves, that European Fit works better for me.
Great video! Shows how the PanAmerica keeps going up the trail after a shiny road Harley would have turned back. Any talk yet of a separate HD PanAm riders group? It is certainly a different kind of bike and a different riding lifestyle as your video shows.
Brown Green, check out Million Dollar Bogan on TH-cam. He takes his Road King off road. All over the Australian Outback.
If I had the extra money and space, I would definately own one of these bikes. And a Livewire.
@@PanM8
Yes, I know the MDB channel and you're absolutely right that he fearlessly (recklessly?) takes his Big Twin off road. But he is one in a million. Myself, I want PanAmerica's little brother.
Hey Harley Davidson! If Matt Laidlaw telling you to get him some bags, you better get those bags! - Nice bike Matt - Im excited about the new engine, but wish the Sportster model wasn't tuned down.
FYI. Avoid the aluminum side cases like the Plague! They are dangerous when off road trail riding. I have them On my triumph Tiger 1200 because the bike came with them. The aluminum cases are rigid, catch on branches and other things. If you get snagged the mounts will break and you are basically screwed with a detached case that you can't fix in the field. If you tip over and your leg is under the case you may be severely injured a long way out. Be patient and companies live Givi (they make the cases for the Pan America) or SW-Motek will have the soft cases soon. All my luggage now is from SW-Motek and it is the best made ADV gear on earth. It won't be long before they have the HD covered!
Mosko Moto also make great soft luggage! Little pricey though.
@@markchalloner5883 Mosko makes good stuff but SW-Motek has better attachment systems for everything they make. Click it's on, click it's off. The tank ring mount tank bags are the best.
Alright. I’ll have to take a look.
Matt. You need to check out the dual sport- adv. bike trails off Angels Crest Highway (2 ) west of Wrightwood. You can ride Blue Ridge and get to 8000 feet to beat the heat. Then down into the headwaters of the San Gabriel.
Let us hope Harley improved their reliability, their quality control, and their attitude toward buyers (ever visited a Harley dealer before?). Then I, personally would appreciate HD. I am guessing Harley Davidson will go out of business soon or be bought again like AMF did.
In my experience most ADV specific jackets are too heavy and are loaded with too many gimicky features (16 pockets, kidney belts and water bladder sleeves). A good armored mesh jacket lets you ride comfortably in 100 degree heat. Add a wind proof thermal mid layer under, and a rain jacket over, and you're good to go down into the 30s. I prefer a waterproof pant with some good vents, because putting on rain pants on the side of the road sucks, but zipping up vents, and throwing on a rain jacket is pretty easy. Avoid anything where the removeable waterproof layer is on the inside. Taking off your jacket to zip it in while it's raining is just dumb. Just my 16 cents. The Pan Am looks like a killer bike. Good on Harley for finally making bikes that non Harley guys might actually want to buy.
That’s some solid advice. Thanks man. I agree that the jacket is really heavy.
Just found your channel, and enjoying the content. Great editing. Always like to see video of So Cal especially on two wheels. Nice job Matt.
Glad you got your Pan America. I am still waiting on my bags also.
Deadwood Green!! Love it
It is a interesting color
Matt, you may want to consider soft or semi-rigid panniers for off-road riding. Hard panniers are usually toast after a fall and can cause an injury if you put your foot down while riding with kickback into the pannier. Congrats on the new adventure bike. Thanks for another honest review.
A buddy of mine bought a Pan America and I had the chance to ride it for about 40miles and it was great, if I had the money I would likely buy one in a few years if they still make them and refine them a bit more. I hated the windscreen, it felt cheap, had a lot of distortion at the top and it rattled like mad. I think Harley needs to address the windscreen rattling and distortion, but that rattling is just obnoxious and I’d think it will end up breaking off after awhile or just creating issues. I think the bike looks amazing and different than most adventure bikes. Oh, and also, the rear pillion needs to be beefed up because it doesn’t have a great weight rating like the majority of adventure bikes do.
I have some years of experience of driving tour enduros and I really don’t need cases (kofrs) better and enough to buy bag on tank and waterproof soft bag on 60 litres for the backyard
The pants NEED to be offered with a longer inseam!!! Thanks for the vid and info...
Being 6'4 I agree
Although I am not a off road rider, I enjoyed your take on the new Pan America. You looked like you were ready for a break, sitting at the cafe counter enjoying that ice water, :-). Safe Travels. 🙂🏍🇨🇦
Waiting for mine to come in. Black and grey. Great video Matt! Still keeping my 2020 Tiger 1200 for the more on road stuff though! Never thought in a million years that I would ever own a Harley Davidson.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I am mine! Luckily I ordered the panniers and other stuff in early March and had it waiting on my bike.
The bike has a face only a mother could love.
I'll come out and buy one if I get the same price you did 😉
What a nice area to explore, thanks for the views.
i still waiting on my Pan America Special . Mine is on the ship from thailand june 8 th. It will take the ship 8 to 9 weeks before the ship is in the Netherlands. The Pan America clothes are from the Dutch producer Rev it.
Thailand? WTF? That's where those British bikes called Triumphs are made.
I prefer my GSA made in Germany.
@@petermacgregor9805 I prefer my GS also. The PanAm looks like a good bike. Had it been around a few years I might have bought it. There's no point in selling or trading my GS in for this. Dealer network is better than BMW but the GS has better low end tongue and a quick shifter and a crap ton of aftermarket options. HD Salesman told me there were no available panniers in stock and no aftermarket right now. Already sold out and a few months delay.
Looks like a motorcycle you can have a lot of fun on Lots of luck with it Matt Love it
Not really into adventure bikes but I find myself really enjoying the photography and scenery in Matt's videos. Greta production value. Also does a good job of placing these bikes in real world scenario's which is definitely doing HD a favor
Congratulations Matt: Enjoy the New American Ride! I sell/finance H-D in NJ (coastal area). I do appreciate the all new Pan America and truly amazed by the capability; however, where I live, looks nothing like your California country. This motorcycle should be considered, by anyone who lives near such beautiful country roads. Thanks for a great video.
When I lived in San Clemente, road up their many times. Used to go up the Ortega to access it or I came out that way. Make sure you eat at either Bravo Burgers or Bad to the Bone. Brings back fond memories. I was life flighted from the peak. I launched off the cliff a 1/4 mile from the top. Did the same rode on a new bike on my one year anniversary of almost killing myself. Those tires are fine for that road, just air down.
Hey Matt, the Pan Am suits you! and yes I like the green too, the only difference is, I need to take the seat completely off in oder to ground both feet flat ... so yo have plenty of reserve left for off roading
Haha. Yea, the seat high doesn't work for a lot of people. The Adaptive ride height is nice though.
Cool ride Matt. Thanks for taking us along. It looks like the Pan America didn't even break a sweat.
Hello Eric how are you doing today
I hope you got a friends and family discount on that gear, near $2k! This bike is amazing to me, I imagine that by the time I'm ready to buy one the gear and accessories supply will be all fixed. Happy riding!
HD definitely knocked it out of the park. I think there a lot of guys out there that love harleys but never found a model in the line up that worked for their riding style. That’s always been my view. In a few years I could see a Dirt Glide in my garage.
Great video as always Matt.
That definitely looked fun, Matt. Thanks for taking us along!
My Passage helmet fell apart riding on smooth pavement on my second ride with it.
I liked the Helmet until that point.
Yep, still waiting for my bags and racks.
Love the Sage Green and the Gauntlet Gray. I didn’t want another black bike even though it looks damn good in.black.
The stock tires, I classify them as 80/20 tires but they are confidence inspiring, especially on the road. We’ll see how they do for mileage.
Matt, formADV off-road riding, grab one of the tank bags, they are handy as Hell and it puts the weight on the front suspension, where you want it in the twisty sections. Plus, tank bags keep the bike width narrow. I am really missing a tank bag, I’ll be ordering that as soon as they are available. Unfortunately the Pan Am has the raised section on top of the tank so the aftermarket bags aren’t going to work as well as the H-D branded bag with the molded bottom.
I like the color and glad H-D hit the mark with this bike they are creating a whole new market for the MOCO
If Harley made side hard bags (not the large aluminum panniers) like some sport touring bikes I would put my order in tomorrow, I'm like touring the pavement not dirt. Nice video 👍🏽
Is that California? Wow man, what a beautiful landscape! And great bike too.
N. Orange County
I used to be an Orange County Deputy Sheriff (retired) and patrolled Silverado Canyon. I couldn’t believe they paid me to drive a Chevy Tahoe out there 😂. I rode to the peak many times. I never rode to the Ortega because it was beyond my patrol jurisdiction but the U S forestry service told me to take the Main Divide Road (Forest Rd S304) if I ever needed to escape from a wild fire (if the road back to Silverado was blocked). It puts you on the Ortega just east of Hell’s Kitchen.
Rad man. Thanks for the comment. 🤘🏼
What is the best bike that gives speed , adventure, control ?
Nice video production. The engine sound reminds me of my VStrom. I thought they would go with a larger front wheel. I am looking forward to seeing this bike in person.
Thanks man. Thanks for watching.
Get a Pair of Rox Risors and get a hold of SWMotech for the Paniers, since that is what Harley will most likely be doing.
My 2023 Nightster Special is in shipping. Love this bike as well..following
Terrific review as always Matt. Just got my PA a couple weeks ago and just completed an Iron Butt over the weekend. Very impressed at the bike’s versatility, relative comfort and performance. A nice compliment to my LiveWire - both bikes I purchased based in part on your reviews. Would have seriously considered buying one at your dealer in CA and riding back to MI, but the sales tax implications for buying in your state were onerous (I talked to your sales team). Keep the great reviews coming…
Looks like the jacket has the integrated back brace-waist belt. I have one in my Klim gear.. comfortable - but hot.
Yea, it’s does. I should have mentioned that.
I was at a dealership in Hungary the other week. They have the metal cases, but no brackets to mount them on. So also problems over here in the EU with P&A. Nice bike Matt and some more good info. I’ll be going on a test ride this or next week and see what I think of it. Maybe I’ll be selling my FLS after all 😅. I’m even considering taking a 1 or 2 day course in off-road riding to see if this is what I want to get myself into.
Great video, I feel you about backordered parts. I was involved in an accident Feb. 28 and my Road Glide Special sat at my dealership until July waiting on parts. I started to think maybe I just trade my RG for a Pan America because the waiting was brutal. I have it back but tomorrow I go in for the headlight that finally came in yesterday. I also had a rear tire on order and one is available. I have 500 miles left on the one I have but I want to ride and not sit waiting on another backorder. Great vide, stay safe
You should've gone to Get On! ADVfest this weekend. There were plenty of Pan Americas out there
Where was it?
@@MattLaidlaw I didn't go (picking up my Pan Am on Saturday) but I believe it was in and around Sturgis. Def going to go next year! www.revzilla.com/adv-fest
I like the spontaneous commentary to HD about the bags/ cases...funny. How did the HD compare to the BMW you rode at Rawhyde?
Well built bike, looks like it will staple the definition of adventure riding on a higher level. Nice leap from harley
Another great video. I picked up my PA-S back in May, had the panniers on "order" since April...delivery expected around 1 Oct! Absolutely HD misjudged the demand for accessories for this amazing bike. My dealer (Wild Prairie in MN) did an great job of searching the entire country to locate and get my ordered parts. Looking forward to hitting Superior National Forest in MN this Aug after Sturgis. And the Deadwood Green was my 1st choice, but ended up and happy with Black.
Hello Tim how are you doing today
they didn't misjudge.. its just typical HD. A simple replacement fender can take weeks or even months.
What an awesome trail to have right on your doorstep Matt, very fortunate . Great video, ride safe….from the UK
That was pretty dicey passing that truck on the way up! Beautiful color on the PA! I test rode one last week and was very impressed.
That new HD gear is really nice as is the new bike. I think HD has done this one well.
I love the 'Military Green' ~ totally badass. Stock seats are always in need of improvement~ it's the one thing that all motorcycle manufacturers, even HD, will never really get right~ always a stylistic afterthought that has nothing to do with comfort. It will be interesting to see what Corbin and other come up with for this bike.
BMW GS dominance is OVER! Love the Pan Am.Well done HD and now must start saving up
I think that it's really great that the Pan America is successful. Personally, I think it looks cool. Furthermore, I can't wait to test ride a Sportster S. Everyone is saying how incredible this new motor is.
I'm very interested in that model gear.. especially for riding off road near the coast
I live out here too! Well, San Juan, but it’s all the same to me lol.
I never gave this one a second thought cause i didn’t think I’d need it being out here.. but now seeing this, I just might have to look in to it??
Always great content here! Love your Zion and Yosemite vids, and I look forward to more Pan American content!
Thanks for posting!
I have a 2016 FXDLS... I am 6'3 150lbs. I really think I am need a Pan America, you look comfy on it even being tall.
Yea. It’s a good tall guys bike.
Awesome, you took your Pan-Am out/off-roading right away. I’m still a little nervous about hitting the off-road trails on mine. I’m also waiting for those panniers and top case to come in; darn that supply chain.
I’ll be looking forward to your future Pan-Am video uploads.
Please don't go off-roading with hard panniers though, you won't be the first one to injure themselves that way. For off-roading, soft panniers are definitely the safer option.
They both have their pros and cons obviously, so depending on your type of riding you might want to pick one over the other. For off-roading though, I'd say pick the safest one.
Matt congrats on the Pan America, it looks awesome. I got the sport side cases for mine and they are awesome. Don't plan on doing too much off-road, so they work for me. Ride on!
Hi there thanks for a great and honest clip am in a decision between the pan America or the gs bmw I have a few more months of saving before I purchase so it’s great to how the teething goes over the next six months cheers..
Thank you so much Matt, your review was terrific. Honest and just so real compared to other reviews. That kind of riding is exactly what I do here in Australia. The PA looks like it will comfortably handle both the highways and the tracks that I enjoy. I will be hoping to take one for a test ride tomorrow, so your video allows me a little insight as to what I can expect. Thanks brother, stay safe.
Harley apparently has knocked it out of the park with the PA. I'd love to have one for my 2nd bike! Thanks for sharing this one.
It's great as a second bike. I'll always have a air-cooled Push rod bike as my primary though,
I was all for getting one myself and then I found that the battery was in the belly pan which is probably the most ridiculous location you could ever think of for a battery on a bike.
What on earth were HD thinking of?
I shant be getting one now.
That jacket looks like a modified Revit Poseidon 2... about the chest vents: Poseidon has them a lot bigger and it is still a bloody hot jacket. it's 800EUR already so I don't even wanna imagine how much it costs with a Harley badge on it...
Yes, it’s made by revit. I’m sure it’s similar to some of their existing styles.
I definitely like the colour of the bike. Anyone can feel your passion when watching this vid! As far as I’m concerned me myself & I, this adventure bike comes 20 years too late. That’s reality since I would have loved to throw that thing up & down the Canadian forest dirt roads. But now not so much, getting caked up with mud or dust everywhere is kinda past tense. So personally I cannot justify buying the Pan Am just to go out & play off roads 3-4 times a year. Meanwhile I’ll keep on eyeballing the Road Glide bagger Limilted!
Hello how are you doing today
No worries, if this bike becomes popular, HD will soon be adding chrome all over and jacking the price up.
Hey how is the engine heat management system - can I ride it in city in sports shorts 🩳
Is the strategy here to sell you an ok bike for a lot of money that you then have to buy upgrades for and spend more money before it's actually good?
Hey I have a PA too (black I'm sorry) and although I have years of on-road experience, I haven't done off-road for years and never on a bike this size. Or this heavy.
So you didn't talk much about the ride mode you used. I'm guessing Off-Road or Off-Road plus which takes the ABS off the back wheel. Have you had a chance to try out a personal mode from one of these ?
I'm in France so I've been riding on the paths around fields and the like for the moment and the normal tyres do not like wet grass and mud too much.
Great bike though. I've been on Harleys for 20 years but this is another world.
Google earth ??? is what I use. You can come down in a few spots. 2 I know of in Corona, Ortega of course and another farther south. You could stay up there a week and never be on the same trail...They used to kill a trail by digging trenches across them with small berms and signs,,, If you go through those be very careful you may ride up on a washed out trail. I knew you would love that trail and glad you made it to the top. Oh and that is the best condition you will see that trail in, after some rains it gets really rough.
Fantastic video. Got the bike too and really impressed by it.
I ordered almost all accessories when they first announced that you could get on sold bike list. It's now late July and panniers and brackets are on backorder to at least November. Harley sure dropped the ball. My local service manager cannot even get a service manual, not scheduled to be printed until August.
Yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t just Harley. Supply chains in a lot of industries are screwed up right now.
I enjoyed the review. Would like to know if you can adjust the suspension and did you have to. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you.
Hello Greg how are you doing today?
Saw one on the road the other day, really dig this bike. Cheers!
Whoo I was just curious about the price of the passage gear because it looks like great stuff and after seeing the price it must be amazing. 1600 bucks for just the jacket, pants, and gloves
I had a feeling you where going to buy a Pan Am. Looks like you will be having a blast with it all year! I imagine your street bike will be gathering a little dust of its own! Congratulations! BTW, you may be better off buying soft bags, the aluminum ones will get dented up anyway!
Thank you.
Yea, functionally the aluminum probably aren’t as good but I like the style and space of them way better.
You might want to think about getting a Garmin Zumo XT. Generally won't need to flag someone down for directions.
Hah! True! I think the big question was road closures and terrain. If the trails we jeep rated or mount in bike trails.
So, you don’t have too many negs on the factory bike. I’m curious to see how it sells against other companies such as ATM’s Duke. Dual sports are awesome off-road.
