Man, Quadzilla has a special place in my heart. Growing up in the 80s and reading about it in magazines it was revered and basically put up into mythical status. I would beg my parents to take me to the local power sports store to see it in person but it was never in stock. Got me hooked on quads for sure.

I have also built one of these. You'll want to speak with Todd Witz.
Since you are tearing down you'll want to do at least the following
    - main crank bearing journal inserts
    - cylinder ear reinforcing
    - o ring the head
The cylinder head also needs a major reworking to make reliable, they just weren't right from the factory.
    - use 2 green o-rings for the powervalve (known leak point)
    - RM wrist pin bearing & kevin cunningham billet thrust washers.
    - mic the shift forks!
Best of luck with your build man! I have almost 10K into mine, worth every penny when it's done!
Pair it with Todd's porting, LED trx250r airbox delete, VM44 carb, Steiner billet intake, Q2.0 pipe, and that thing will be NASTY!
I also have some sweet billet Mossbarger reeds for this if you are interested :)

Mike Steiner did a billet intake for my 87 LT 250R. took almost 2 months of wait time and 200$ but was worth it. And bought some billet thrust washers from Cunningham. he's actually gonna be at our local track..Newtown Drag way in Newtown VA next week. he always comes out.

I have an 87 zilla as well, y’all may have opened Pandora’s quad. The zilla’s are notorious for being the biggest pieces of junk ever. Don’t get me wrong I think they are boss machines when running, but just so many stupid motor issues. Like the fact that the water pumps are all faulty from the factory and leak through the weep hole. They also pull head studs loose unless you get stud work done. And not to mention the fact that they literally rip the ears off the cylinders on these bikes. All this happens on stock bikes for no other reason than the fact they just were not manufactured right. And finding parts is also very fun. This is going to be a tough build and if y’all have any questions feel free to hit me up. Good luck👍

The Q-Zilla is worth fixing properly. These old big bore quads and dirt bikes are like Toyota's, regardless of age they always hold their value. I have too many toys and all of them need fixing. Sadly I don't have a lot of time and endless fat-stacks to work on everything at once. Luckily my three-wheeler is the cheapest thing to work on since it's a small displacement unit. I've got some parts on the way to fix up the valves/head. :)

Badass quad but I'd still take a banshee. Reasons behind why I would take a banshee. It's twin cylinder/carb. They have numerous parts out there available, you can make them into fire breathing monsters given enough time and money. They are over all durable, don't suffer from transmission issues or other problems that plague other quads.

87 zillas with the 6 stud head and other issues being a first year model are much less desirable than 88 to 91s and to make an 87 reliable you should be prepared to spend alot of money. It's a luxury machine to have, if machined and modded enough to make it reliable, the main issue being the head gasket on the 87s, in stock form they are guaranteed to blow, run lean, grenade we all know the story. There are other frame and suspension issues I believe with the 87s as well. I hope if the machine is being rebuilt it will be done properly, so it will be a reliable, long lasting insanely powerful motor. They're supposed to handle pretty bad hence the aftermarket a arms, so as I said, a completely luxury to own and really meant mainly for being good in a straight line. Very similar to a Tecate 4, a macnine I have a ton of experience with having rebuilt one mechanically pretty much front to back, besides the motor. 42hp at the crank stock, these kinds of machines are like shopping carts with rockets strapped to them and owning them is not because you want the best riding experience lol. Just my opinion, I assume you do have an 87 and that is why it's in the state it's in fresh after a "full resto". I came very close to purchasing an 87 but once I learned about all the issues and how inferior they are to the 88 - 91, ill just keep waiting for an 88 to 91 thats not destroyed but needs some love. Either way vintage machines of this era are becoming so popular and expensive that its becoming a rich man's game, though deals do still pop up. If you guys do this one right I have a feeling it would generate a strong response from the audience base and maybe you could show in detail how to address or make superior the 87 issues. Id love to see it rebuilt, properly.

    • @Donny_Buysall
      @Donny_Buysall 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@fastmachines500r8 If you say so. Duncan racing I believe are the premiere zilla builders. I've never owned a zilla, but I have a ton of machines of this era, this is what I've heard about the 87 zilla. The head is a shitty, inferior design, why running without a head stay on a motor that has inadequate head gasket sealing would have any change on whether it blows or not is beyond me, but I am not the ultimate authority. 88 to 91 cylinder is the quick, best way to make it somewhat reliable.
Duncan racing has built some really nice, amazing 500's. They seem to be popular with the sand or desert riders where too much power is never enough.

We trashed ours and made some aluminum pipe and k and n filter with outer ware with t clamps. Looks like you have a 87 with 6 headbolts 88 and up have 7 no but deal. Look on top of the piston and see what number you have, I think you can bore it about 10 time's. We had a lot of top ends until we went to straight race gas and motoul 800 at 50 to 1 , remember more oil more heat . One other thing is on top of the head blead the air out after you get it warmed up every time you run it you'll be shocked how much air you'll get it makes a hot spot if you don't
