    Clutch basket looks pretty fresh. You said budget build, I would recommend you have the crank rebuilt and replace both crank bearings at a minimum. I would not run those with having had that much trash in there.

    Yo! you just saved me a possible YUGE headache ! I just finished replacing my inner clutch hub on my 03 CR250R. I forgot to bend the tabs on the washer over onto the center nut. As soon as I saw you tapping those tabs over to take the hub out, I thought "OH SHIT! I FORGOT TO BEND THOSE TABS OVER!". I immediately went out and drained the oil, took the cover off, re-torqued the nut and bent the tabs over.
    Thanks!!!

    I just rechecked the vid, I would check thr service specs and see what feeler gauge is supposed to fit between lower rod end and crank web. Looks like thr crank walked on the pin alot!!! Could be how its supposed to be but id deff check it out. I mean if it checks out, and true/weld it. Flush out the mains and rod bearings good u could easily send it. Idk I'm like 50/50 on it lol. I rebuilt a banshee motor once with a used crank, honed thr jugs, wet sanded the pistons with a block and 600 grit, same ole rings, all new gaskets and seals, and she ran mint. 135psi in ea. She ran so sweet. 1st kick bike every time.

    • @MichaelSabo
      @MichaelSabo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that the series is over, I've learned that the zilla is notorious for having quite a bit of play in the lower rod bearing; it still runs strong to the best of my knowledge so I think it was good! And dude, there's just something about getting a machine to run great when you re-use/refinish all the old stuff and it still goes perfectly lol.

    Ok, so the blue impact is a good match for the 500, I only own Honda red impacts, no stupid reverse threads! Lol motor looks pretty prime inside, looks like motoseal or utlra gray sealant, nothing wrong with a little motoseal or Hondabond ht on case gaskets, especially on old cases. Could be a cool build if you have a lt500 master do some porting a pipe and 44mm lectron, otherwise a decent big bore Honda will take it, have seen a rare 70+ hp lt out there, and maybe even a near 80hp lt, they are rare and badass. Should be a cool build! Have you done case repairs? It’s an art, for and experienced welder, or lots of motoseal will be in need! Lol

    My guess - rings weren’t gapped correctly, buddy ran it wide open, rings expanded and hit the power valve or the power valve wasn’t shimmed correctly - destroying the rings lands and then the piston, and finally the cylinder skirt. Probably made, clack clack clack noise for about 3 seconds.
    My buddy rebuilt a ski-doo and forgot to gap the rings, and that’s exactly what happened to his engine. I was there for it, when it blew, wasn’t there for the rebuild.

    Before welding I would recommend you soak those cases and acetone for several hours maybe even a day or two. Bake them in the oven at 200 for a couple hours, then put them back in the acetone for a while. Welding cast aluminum can be pretty tricky to begin with.

    • @ianrochon1728
      @ianrochon1728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% this!!!
      I just went through this with my Blaster. Counter balancer bearing went and the Balancer punched a silver dollar size hole in the crank pocket. Brake clean the crap out of it, bake at 200F(make sure you put the cases in the oven when COLD so they warm up slowly along with the oven)
      Built up the cases with the TIG, hand filed and lapped. I also removed half the mass of the counter balancer just so it knows who's boss. Went with a Namura piston and so far I have nothing but good things to say about them.
      She runs better than when new now.

    I would not sink any money into that without getting undamaged cases first. Yeah you could repair them but that thing is gonna have serious pressure and force on it. Also, not spending the 150$ or so to have the big end bearing of the crank redone is also a mistake. I understand being on a budget, but sometimes things come to a point where trying to skimp on serious shit like cranks ir center cases and then inevitably dumping a substantial amount of money on top, you could end up just throwing away the money spent on the from crank failing or crank chamber blowing out from the damage it got from the skirt that dropped. As I said last time, owning a zilla is a luxury and should be treated as such, its already not the greatest design in a number of ways and I just personally feel skimping on the bottom is just asking for future problems and a total lack of reliability. With all that said, im a huge fan of the channel, I hope it continues to compound and grow for you because you've put the time and effort in and you deserve, and beyond that you always have high quality, well edited content. Vintage bike life is an expensive one, just ask me, I have maybe 40 machines and they're just money pits and I don't sell them but they are my passion. If you guys are ever near upstate NY area, you should get in touch with me and I can let you guys see some real deal shit.

    I have a suggestion to help with seeing down into dark, shadowed areas with the recording device, and not seeing much. Strap on a mini head lamp ?!?
    Hold on, keep reading, lol !
    I occasionally use a couple different cheap ones, they were free or around $5.00. Not uncomfortable for short periods, a few minutes for me. They are easily off & back on head. Hang just about anywhere with all that elastic, and I spread em around, hate tool hunting !!!
    I found cheapies with the on/off switch on the top of them, sliding left and right. Very easy to switch left and right, on, off, and strobe function in the other direction on a couple. The lamps with push buttons tend to fail quickly for me, so I stick with sliding switches lamps.
    So quick and simple to to get light directly where you want it, when you need it.
    So, for your video's, pull on the light, get it as comfortable as possible, hold you recording device as you would while recording, Then Pre-Align, or aim the light beam where you know you'll need it while recording, do a few quick dry runs, then when you take a look for your faithful viewers we can see as well as you do:-)
    after the shoot is done with the light, you can just slip it off and toss it before you are being recorded yourself if you don't want to be seen wearing it ? Not a really kool look even though they work great when you don't have that 3rd arm ! No one track mind replies to that comment please, this is a family channel !
    What the neck, give it a try if you haven't already ?
    Keep up the great shows !!!

    Hey mike! I got a question about the FCR 39 carb you ran on your predator. I know it was an Amazon carb so it was a fairly good price, that being said how is it performing? Good quality? I was thinking about getting one for my Ltz 400 but don’t want it to let me down, thanks!

    Yeah, the impeller bolt and primary nut are left hand threads. The head of the impeller bolt has "LH" on it. Easy to miss.
    Whoever put this engine together doesn't know how to time the balancer. Also, you're right, they used too much sealant. And they used crap fasteners for the stator and LH shift drum bearing retainer.
    Actually, the correct material for the main bearing inserts is plastic! Jerry Hall, the master of the Quadzilla, did a lot of testing, with aluminum, steel, brass, etc. while the Quadzilla was still being made! He determined that some sort of plastic is the correct stuff to use. Seems wrong, but it is correct!

    Hi again,
    Another option would be just Velcro tab, a mini flashlight directly to the recording device ? I can't picture it be stable though, and again, keep on going with your great shows, a lot of people are learning a lot from you !!!!! 5 stars !!!

    I had an 87 lt250r that had the same thing happen, trust me do the bottom end, it’s not much for Bearings, you don’t want to go backwards after you start it and hear a knocking or ticking coming from the bottom end, all I did was all bearings clutch cylinder piston rod and gaskets, with a set of boyesen reeds, bike ran like a drama.

    Wow this is quite a complex machine. I'm not familiar with quad motors and such. Looks like the gear box and power plant are combined together in one package ya?

    The stuff the previous person used on the cases was a spray on gasket material, it looks as if it wasn’t ever really ran after it got rebuilt. Not a lot of hours anyways, just looks like it sat for a long time in the elements
