Cooler Master NR200P V2 - It's a bit complicated

  • The Cooler Master NR200P V2 is a simple product with a complicated name. In essence Cooler Master has taken the case from the NR200P Max barebones and decided to sell it as a standalone product. This means you will need to source an SFX power supply and a suitable AIO cooler for your CPU and then you will be set for some Mini-ITX fun and games, along with a fair amount of cable management chores. it's a clear example of how to take a good case and make it worse in almost every regard but also charging more. the SFF discord laughed very hard at the changes, even the CM rep there alluded to the fact that he was against the changes.
But hey CM does what they want with their money, i have no use for a case with a riser while i can better use the space by using the classic layout.

Don't think this is great for first time builders. I'd consider taking that fan out during the build and maybe swapping it for a slim 120mm fan for better gpu room on the bottom. I've done two builds with this case a Pink build for the wife in the original version, and my personal build with a 7950X-3D & 4090 using the NR200P MAX. It can be a challenge but satisfying once its actually done and working. It does make you miss cases like the Fractal Torrent Mini. I wished CoolerMaster would make a dual chamber version.

not much of a labyrinth, some numbers/letters for a model ID, then they trough V2 at the end. The only thing weird is that its not a v2. It would be like Sony do a PS4/5 Pro that was weaker than the original, or just the same with nothing really to stand out.

Great review, having just done a NR200 last September as my first build, it's very fiddly indeed. I hate that they have actually reduced the choice of CPU cooling and GPU mounting options. The best upgrades are the USB-C Front panel option plus the existing two Type A's and the cooling hole at the front (sorry it's a GPU poke through hole really)
For now a 4080 i5 1300k is enough for a few years, hopefully by the time I need there will be a NR200 v3 with more config options.

I don't mind losing that extra SSD in the front since you can just stack them in that single slot and the front panel will still fit without issue. That's what I'm doing now in the original NR200P, have 2 Samsung 870EVO's taped together so I can have all my fans routed to a Corsair Commander module on the 2nd SSD spot.

  • @jdmmxbth

Would love to see a noise-normalised thermal comparison with the original NR200, where the vertical GPU performed quite a bit worse than the horizontal. Even more so if the GPU is thick enough to deshroud and directly use the 120mm case fans to cool it.

Oh gosh I really don't know what build to do next. For 16 years I ran everything inside the original Cooler Master Cosmos, with the original case fans, and my original 850W Cooler Master PSU working flawlessly for all that time. But now... I don't "need" HDD bays, or optical drive bays (useful, but not used enough so I would get a USB one).
So I am really struggling for what build I would go with - ATX or SFF. I have an XFX MERC 310 7900 XTX, which is humungous of course, so something that fits that is essential. As for CPU - I generally rock the "700" version of a ryzen 7 CPU - currently the 5700X - I don't need a 100W CPU anymore but my use-case has changed from "scientific" to mostly "gaming" and photo editing.
But I loved the Cosmos because of the sound-proofing inside it - I like quiet PCs! Though I appreciate maybe things have gotten quieter for case fans etc in the past 16 years. Yet, I don't like to lose performance...
So is it possible to go SFF with such a huge GPU... or am I better off with an ATX build.
I also don't want a gazilliion utilities for different RGB / monitoring software, so one manufacturer of most of the components is ideal.
So where do I go!? Cooler Master? NZXT?
    If anyone can help...!

They should have called this the NR210 or something. 'V2' implies that it's 'better' compared to the V1. The original NR200P is a lot more versatile, but I get why this exists. Lots of SFF enthusiasts would already have the SFF PSU and 240mm AIO, and would just need a case.

I thought the V1 was going to be discontinued, it doens't seem like there is any stock of it atm. The max had issues with the aio and psu. Noisy pump and psu, people would end up changing them up. So it would end up being a waste of money to buy it. I always thought it was an awful purchase, as it was 400 usd.
Cooler master decided to sell the case by itself with new side panesl and usb-c but..... they did indeed want this to replace the standard nr200p, hence the name v2.
Once this was reported by pc world, most of the community was not happy about it. Cooler master got lots of negative feedback, as the v2 is a far more limiting case.
Eventually, they rolled back the decision to discontinue the nr200p and left the name v2 on this model. I'm guessing they didn't want to spend the money to reprint manuals and boxes to change the name.

The whole vertical GPU mounting only is dumb and riser cables suck! Every time PCI-E raises a generation it introduces a whole set of headaches and cost too. Not everyone wants to install an AIO with the associated extra failure points.
To call this a real V2 upgrade, keep the USB-C Front Panel upgrade and the extra room at the front of the case for longer graphics cards, and maybe the changes to how the case can be disassembled.
Another real improvement to the case would be some kind of concession for RAM cooling, as the limited airflow around that area of the case does impact tuning potential considerably. I guess this was too hard for the Cooler Master engineers to think about and design.

I don't see why this would be an unnecessary release. Some people already have SFX PSU and AIO but might want to switch to another case. Others may want to buy a different AIO, go with an air cooler, or prefer a custom loop. Some might choose a different PSU with different specifications or just like another PSU brand. Sure, I agree that the case has a little bit misleading name because it's strongly related to the previous Max version, but it's not the most horrific naming scheme, looking at you Nvidia.

Well it would seem to suit an Intel i7 and i9 which run far too hot for an air cooler anyway. Only problem is the minimum recommended radiator needed is 340mm. The NR200P max came preinstalled with a “special” 280mm radiator with an extra 25% fins over standard radiators which is just ok for an i9. So Intel guys are going to need to really think carefully about the choice of water cooler if they choose this case. I am building an NR200P max as we speak and purchased two optional extra fans for the bottom of the case. Unfortunately with the riser card in place, a slim “15mm” 120mm fan is the biggest that will fit under the cpu.
