There is a guy who tested this myth, I think called 'bloke on the range'. He set up a camera down range of an m1 firing, you couldn't hear any ping because the guns just too loud.
@AftrLifKillr watch Clint, then tell me how I should quote him: th-cam.com/video/8YsYYywYFJo/w-d-xo.html I agree, it's a *ping* sound. But when a man who has been gun fighting for half a century says *bling*, you quote him appropriately.
I was gonna quote him myself but I see there's no need. I'll add though "you just reload and thank Jesus you have an '06 that goes through them 6-7-8 deep." And as far as the garand thumb issue, I think it's also overstated. Might be more of an issue in the stress of combat but I've never had that issue in a range setting, even with cold, numb hands. The bolt closes when you release pressure on the fresh clip, not when you push it down. If anything, sometimes the bolt doesn't close and you need to give the charging handle a good smack to close the bolt.
What will you do if a group of enemies charged at you. Not enough time to pull the bolt back ,with the M1 you can fire at a good speed to hold them off a bit. The m1 was built to solve problems not challenge other rifles

Well i know this gun since i was in 1st grade cause curiosity and know other historical facts about WW2, met a lot of "expert" kids talking bout the m1 garand but all their sayings were false
MacArthur once called it "The greatest battlefield implementation ever devised" We can all see why: It's practical, extremely accurate, even at long range, easy to mass-produce, and it makes the iconic "ping" when it runs dry. The ping might prove to be a disadvantage in most cases, but it's like music to your ears when you hear it for the first time.
The German soldier wouldn't hear the ping and if they did it would be useless to him because you are trained not to go anywhere without your battle buddy as an American soldier plus the M1 garand reloads are really fast.
Andrew Chern, I don’t think anyone would hear the ping of an M1 Garand in a firefight. There would be a lot of gunfire to muffle the sound of the ping.
Avoiding Garand thumb is easy. You just hold back the handle as you push the clip in. Once the clip is in, you move your thumb, and release the handle.
I remember watching a History channel special with my dad that mentioned that. When it was stated, my dad jokes about the noisey gunfire and mimicked an enemy soldier by turning his head and pointing at his ear(as if they would be listening for that ping out of the gunfire). I miss my dad's sense of humor.
Except for the part where he said South Vietnam was the largest recipient of Garand rifles. The largest recipient of Garands was surprisingly, Turkey. They got over 300,000, second was South Korea with a little less than 300K, third was France with over 230,000, and South Vietnam comes in fourth with 220,000.
Fun fact the M1 garand was supposed to be 10rd in .276 but when the US asked for 30.06 so after redesigned it accommodate 8rds. Hence why it only holds 8rds
Not all of them there are a few different prototypes from what I’ve seen the gun had a very slight redesign as well that is part but the other part is the bottom part of the rifle stocks were made smaller at least one 30-06 prototype made had 10 rounds I’ve heard there were even magazines being worked on near the end of ww2 thinking of just modifying the gun to work around it and thought it would be to much work at the time Not trying to be rude just wanted to share a little bit of history I’ve picked up over the years
True, but Garand didn't want to have completely redesign the entire rifle which is why it only hold 8 rds. There were other types of rifles competing for the contract, the other one close was the M1 Johnson (nicknamed the pregnant rifle). Hard to find today but it was produce in a limited quantity.
This is my rifle and this is my gun this is for fighting and this is for fun.. sort of like ship and boat. But different. How many times do I have to hear over and out and no one knows that's not reasonable, over meaning you expect a response and out meaning you are shutting down and expect no response since you are going off air.
Well made for its time. I love how they adapted this into company of heroes, Riflman will always win at short range against the K98 with their semi-automatic rifles
Videos like this are why I subbed to simple history. Both of my grandpas were issued M1’s during basic training when they were drafted. One of them once told me he had been taught to disassemble and reassembled one blindfolded. My dad told me that back during the 90’s you couldn’t walk into a pawn shop without seeing at least 3 or 4 M1’s in the shop and you could buy them for about 100 dollars apiece. Nowadays, cheap ones start out at about 1000 dollars. I’d like to have one someday but it’d be kinda hard for me to justify paying that much for one. Definitely one if my favorite firearms of all time.

This title goes to the Gewehr 41. It was developed before 1940, long before they faced the SVT-40 or even the M1 Garand. The G41 has no detachable magazine, but it had a higher quality than the G43, and it was very reliable. Very few of these weapons were made, and they are very rare. Timothy Torres He bought it many years ago from some sort of sale the base had (forgot the specifics, but apparently they were selling a bunch of them). My dad retired from a thirty year service in the marines a few years ago, but to my understanding, he never used an M1 Garand in combat. The M1 Garand is my most favorite rifle ever!!!! I have one that was produced by H&R. I'm always looking for one with a WWII Serial number that I can afford to get to add to my collection.
M1 thumb usually only happens when you’re messing with the action without a clip. If you have a clip in, the bolt pushes the top round forward so theirs really no way of getting your thumb stuck, since your thumb is on top of the round. The bolt won’t go forward if your thumb is pressing down
When the Garand Thumb animation popped up, every M1 owner shivered, looked at their thumbnail, and remembered when they felt like the life-alert lady 🤣
Meh I never had that issue, mine is super easy to load without clipping your thumb, the rounds are tight enough where it doesn't slam forward on it's own you really need to rerack it and let it slam after
I'm Korean, and I heard story by my father, that my grandfather used this gun at Korean war. He said, When grandfather firstly got this gun, he said 'Wow, I didn't know there were such wonderful guns in the world. It is much better than old crude japanese gun. It's amazing this gun can reload once and fire multiple times without pulling the bolt every time. But, it's little big and heavy for asian.' All Korean soilders could armed with excellent guns - M-1 garand and M-1 carbine at the war thanks to US goverment's supply. I used K-2 automatic rifle when I served in military last year, and I know that the huge developments between M-1 and my K2C1 rifle are all thanks to the veterans who used M-1 rifle at the Korean War. We remember there was many foreign sacrifice and help for saving freedom and democracy of small, poor newly indepedent country. Unfortunately , most of the US Marine Riflemen were equiped with the M1903 Springfield bolt-action rifles . Type 99 Arisaka was better than the Springfield , but also most of the Japanese Soldiers were equiped with the Type 38 Arisaka rifles and anyway they were Banzai-charge minded . Some of them never took a single shot with their Arisakas before they were killed by the US Marines . Moreover , a bolt-action rifle is quite ineffective in a jungle environment , which requires close quarter fighting weapons , like an SMG for example . Japanese had few SMGs at Guadalcanal , the Type 100/42 , which was always jamming . On the other side , the US Marines had the M1 and M1928 Thompson and the M50 and M55 Reising SMGs and they were equiped with those en-masse .

You can’t hear the ping in battle. There’s videos about WW2 Vets talking about this, they couldn’t even hear the ping let alone people around them.

M1 thumb only ever happens once or maybe twice, you learn real fast to pull your hand out of the way. i know from experience.
Or another safer solution: secure the bolt with your palm and load the clip with your thumb
Avoiding Garand thumb is easy. You just hold back the handle as you push the clip in.
Once the clip is in, you move your thumb, and release the handle.
"The enemies could hear the ping" you just shot 8 rounds of 30-06, everyone is deaf!
I think patton actually said that
Er, dead.

Not only that but everyone else is shooting
and if that don't work, use more 30-06
Very historically accurate. Thank you for pointing out that the "ping alerted the enemy" was a myth. Few sources acknowledge that it's a myth.
Not all of them there are a few different prototypes from what I’ve seen the gun had a very slight redesign as well that is part but the other part is the bottom part of the rifle stocks were made smaller at least one 30-06 prototype made had 10 rounds I’ve heard there were even magazines being worked on near the end of ww2 thinking of just modifying the gun to work around it and thought it would be to much work at the time
Not trying to be rude just wanted to share a little bit of history I’ve picked up over the years
True, but Garand didn't want to have completely redesign the entire rifle which is why it only hold 8 rds. There were other types of rifles competing for the contract, the other one close was the M1 Johnson (nicknamed the pregnant rifle). Hard to find today but it was produce in a limited quantity.

While I shot my rifle I was always aware of the slight pung my rifles clips made but I never heard my teammates clips eject. I was focused on my rifle and my tàrget
Fun fact:
The nazis and japanese were so impressed with it, they tried to make their own.
The Japanese didn't make a simi automatic rifle, they stuck with the arasaka bolt action rifle but the germans did attempt it back in 1943 called the gewher 43, similar function. But with out the pong because the the clip didn't pop out like the garand.

But the Gewehr 43 was NOT the first German self-loading rifle of WW2.
My grandfather used one in the Korean war, but he didn’t keep or purchase one after his service.
The bolt won’t go forward if your thumb is pressing down
You have to press really hard. It is possible for the round to slip underneath your friend finger.
He said, When grandfather firstly got this gun, he said
'Wow, I didn't know there were such wonderful guns in the world. It is much better than old crude japanese gun. It's amazing this gun can reload once and fire multiple times without pulling the bolt every time. But, it's little big and heavy for asian.'
All Korean soilders could armed with excellent guns - M-1 garand and M-1 carbine at the war thanks to US goverment's supply.
We grandly honor all ROK, US and UN veteran's service, we stand in awe of their sacrifice and bravery at Korean War.
