In the spring of 1940, the British and German Army confronted each other on a full scale in the Battle of France.
By rapidly defeating its more numerous enemies in only 46 days, the German infantry proved to be better prepared and organized than their British, French, Dutch and Belgian counterparts.

Edit: since I am not a native english speaker I thought that Marines only refered to the separate military branch like in the US and not to navy infantry as a whole and Germany didn't have such a military branch but we did have navy infantry

@@gardist Yes and no... They had a naval infantry force, the 'Seebataillon' or 'Marine Stosstrupp Kompanie'
, but they were never a separated branch from the Navy, so no oficial Marine Corps.

DCdangerbrooks, You are mainly right as the Belgians refused permission to the French and the BEF to move into Belgium, in case it provoked the Germans to attack them. The French defence (for over a decade) relied on their mobility to man the Belgian defences so as not to be outflanked.

The early MG-34s has a rate of fire of 600-1000 rounds per minute with later production around 800 rpm. It’s the MG-42 that has the distinctive 1200 rpm rate of fire, resulting in its signature sound
No, there were several versions of the MG34, the 41 version did a 1200 rpm and the S version even 1700 rpm. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_34

I've only fired the modern version of the MG-42... one gentle beast. Sounds like ripping cloth :) If any of you get the chance to fire one at the shooting range - take it!

It had changed when I served to "Train hard, fight easy"
The lesson most great powers in 1918 learn from the war is that the better trained soldier still dies from artillery. A better trained soldier you can't replace is still going to lose you the war. At this point, it's the trained conscript armies that dominate Europe.

Not everyone learned that.
The British still kept a small, highly professional force. This was the BEF and later many of those former members of the BEF would go on to train as Commandos, which were bloody excellent. The French and Germans may have kept huge, conscript armies, but the Brits still preferred having smaller, more professional forces.
The idea worked, as the Brits would win any Infantry vs Infantry fight against the Germans, only losing when Tanks showed up to push them away.
Then came the excellent British Commandos which caused much hair to be yanked out of German Commanders hair due to how irritating they were.
@@SusCalvin Yeah, I guess that's why the Germans barely trained troops towards the end, since most casualties in both world wars were from artillery anyways.
I saw a documentary the other day that put this motto in a different view. A former SS soldier said they were always trained to do the hard and tiresome right thing over the easy thing(that would cost blood). Not refering the motto to training but rather the actual fighting.
7:44 the MG34 did not fire at 1200 rpm. It fired 840 rpm. The MG42, however, did fire 1200 rpm.
The Mg 42 fired up to 1.500 rpm.

but mg42 wasn't around for troops in 1940 either in fact it came into service in 1942

Looked nice, terrible quality. They were made for the parade ground with not much thought given to how well they'd function in combat (strange given German efficiency) they actually ended up copying the British battledress near the end of the war because it was alot more practical.

I had a friend who was in the Hitler Youth. He said that, when he was younger, it seemed like the Boy Scouts but when he got a bit older it became very obvious that he was being trained for the military.

@@vargenfenrisson1164Not sure what MY age has to do with it. He was around 16 when he was drafted, into the German Forces, in 1944. The last time that I saw him was around 1978. So, he would have been about 50, then.

I'm Italian, we use meatballs as grenades, pennette as bullets and a mattarello as melee weapon. With the mattarello we defeat Gurkas with ease.

@@Patrix299 It was more significant and important for Germany though. Since their army was limited to (I think) 100 000 men after WW1, they had to compensate for that through better training. In the early days of the Weimar Republic their intention was to set up a highly trained core army to fasten up the process of a later rearmament.
Also the way of conducting war on the German side required that kind of training. As mentioned in the video, the German soldier was more flexible in service in order to quickly adapt to the requirements of the battles, a principle called "Führen mit Auftrag". And this required higher combat and leadership knowledge.
@@KEmil-zl7xp I understand, I thought he meant that all the lower enlisted soldiers new every detail of the battle plan(not just the officers). I didn't know that the Germans also trained their soldiers to be able to do the job of an officer if needed. I wonder if the German military training today is any similar in regards to leadership.
@@Patrix299 I think a lot of Armies learned one or another lesson from the German Army after WW2. The principal of combined weaponry and Blitzkrieg were adapted a lot. Even Israel fought this way in the six days war.
But also in the business world elements of leadership were influenced by that.
Why point out the British rifle was unchanged mostly since WW1, while glossing over the fact the "98" in the Germans K98k stands for...1898, because it's the same basic design as the G98. Great guns though!
I also dont get it. Many nations used modified versions of their old weapons.
Even the Enfield No4 wasn't radically different to the No3, just cheaper to make!
I shot a K98 at a range this February, what an amazing firearm, I will try to seek out more bolt action rifles to shoot they are really cool

My criticism too: Why is one WW1 vintage weapon apparently 'better' or worse than the other, except that it is emphasized for one, and not mentioned at all for the other. Comparison of the kit feels a bit of shallow too, I'll rewatch britishmuzzleloaders again to have a bit more insight on well their WW2 kit fits with WW2 British doctrine. What I remember, both the British and the German doctrine was to have their riffle-mens fully geared to support the Bren or MG34 (Spandau 😂🤣) squads.
The french rifle was the one that changed a lot, It was actually going to be replaced by a semi auto but It was too late.

The joke is good, if not historically accurate. Mosins were actually accurate and powerful weapons. The Red Army also had a large number of PPSH smgs and DP-28 lmgs that gave Soviet infantry a lot of suppressive firepower.
@@gareginnzhdehhimself 1/40 societ troops had any weapon other than a rifle. Ammunition was so scarce many troops fought without it and had to scavange for ammo. Most soldiers had a pair of mostly unwashed garments for the entire war. So no the Soviets were not well equipped

Well, yeah, but that's because they had shortened theirs 30 years BEFORE Germany. The Lee-Enfield was an excellent bolt action. There is an old saying that goes "To the Great War the Germans brought a hunting rifle, the French an obsolete rifle, and the Americans a target rifle. Only the British brought a battle rifle."

You missed out on something: Blitzkrieg was more than just tanks and soldiers.
It was the first time coordinated attacks with planes and tanks was done 100% by radio communication.
A game changer the world had never seen before.
It wasn't all that amazing when you see how quickly it got bogged down in Poland by decent resistance. It only succeeded because No one had prepared for it once they tired it in the Soviet Union well it didn't go so well

The was no radio communication between tanks and planes till Barbarossa... Up until then there were numerous instances of friendly fire because planes had a hard time recognising friend from foe... Look up military history visualised, he made a video on this topic
@@phantom3969 it was an early version but they did use combined arms. Tanks would support infantry advance while artillery would creep in front and planes used to attack enemy artillery it was quite ingenious considering how they had to do it all off timing with no communication

And as said, a frensh general of the armored forces and an enemy of the maginot line wrote a novel, how he would outflank the maginot line with tanks. Still can't find out his name. Researching that.

SSJ the point of conscription IS inherently brave. They are young men around my age *forced* to fight and die. Many of them were able to accept it, and that’s what makes them brave. Would you consider Vietnam veterans who were conscripts cowards?
@Somarik Green Both are brave in their own ways. Refusing to follow a system you don't agree with knowing you could go to jail is brave but accepting it and going off to war is also brave. Just because you didnt volunteer doesn't mean you aren't brave.

I heard an interview, on the history channel of Italian television, to a British colonel, he said that the English soldier, once he entrenched himself, is difficult to flush out, but the German soldier, when he arrives at the front, is at his home.

The British Army was called the British Army, not British Expeditionary Force. The part that went to fight in Northern France was given the title British Expeditionary Force as a designation

Most of the armies are at most half-motorized. Everyone uses draft animals. Bikes are affordable.
Imagine you take the drill, tactical doctrine development, discipline and other things the german army is already good at. Then you place a politically correct junkie with meddling competency in charge of it. People like Hermann Göring and others.
@@SusCalvin The British Expeditionary force was already fully motorized, some of the German divisions where too, but those where downgraded back to horse-drawn when they where being refitted for Barbarossa (and it was very very clear that fuel problems would arise after a few months of operation even with the de-motorization effort).
Yep, despite the modernity of the panzer arm, when it came to mobility the infantry had barely progressed since 1918.
@@derrickbonsell You could say that the armies in 1918 had progressed so much during the war that they were proto-WW 2 armies. The last bits of old napoleonic traditions have been squeezed out. The armies use modern transports (trains, motor vehicles).
Germany faces a fuel problem that starts now, and stays with them the entire war. WW 2 Germany looks like they want to motorize and leave their dependency on trains, but don't have the means to do so.
9:28 This was always something that confused me when I was younger. I saw Saving Private Ryan with German soldiers shooting 5 round bolt action Mauser rifles, against Americans with semi-auto M1 Garand rifles. I thought to myself *They didn't stand a chance. They were using WW1 technology against American semi-auto rifles and British 10 round Enfields. Man for man, the Allies had more firepower* . I didn't realize that the two forces had 2 *very different doctrines* . The Germans had FAR more medium to heavy machine guns, as mentioned at 9:36. When compared bullet-to-bullet, a German infantry squad could actually put down just as much firepower (if not more) compared to an American/British squad. Their tactics revolved around riflemen supporting the machine gun crew, whereas the Americans and British had more rounds per-soldier and operated more independently. I'm glad the video mentioned this.
Consequently, it's no accident that the Russians ramped up submachine gun production considerably. By the early part of 1944, the Red Army had begun converting 1 in 3 rifle platoons into SMG platoons. They learned in places like Stalingrad that fire superiority and quick moving squads were the key to beating the German tactic of using riflemen to support the MG42. American units adopted a similar tactic with their semi-auto rifles and BAR gunner(s). It was a favorite tactic of the Russians to send a charge of infantry to chuck grenades and lay down SMG fire in an attempt to force the MG42 to move, and when it moved, it would find itself either in perfect position to be hit by snipers or by the DP28 machine guns the Russians had moved in. Without the MG42, all you have are bolt action rifles and a non-com with an MP40 and an officer with a pistol or MP40. Not good odds against a Russian squad equipped almost 100% with PPsh-41s.

Yes "The attack was a failure but had a disproportionate effect on Hitler and Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW, German armed forces high command)." Basically through they outnumbered the Germans French and British forces failed in their counter attack and performed poorly. However, Hitler believed in non existent ability of French and British to fight and thus ordered situation to be resolved fearing a stronger and better counter attack. Hitler have given far more credit to the British and French units then they deserved.

Do some research on it and you will find British troops held to then end in Calais to pull German troops away from Dunkirk. There were also about 30K British troops that were captured after protecting the beaches while the evacuation took place.

Sviatoslav S. my tactic is that if you go historically accurate you must have at least 2k cas and naval bomber each and spam out subs and destroyers drop a few paratroopers to port cities and move there a 24 division army better it be a mechanized one then smash them

The first time I defeated UK was as Sea lion operation - it was something special for me (I even was extremely glad when I saw an achievement).
But I did not only via sub spam - sometimes Dover is not defended (as most of the South-eastern coast). When I managed to land, then the 72 divisions spam was transported from Dunkirk to port and they steamrolled UK.
The war with the Allies was won.

because he basically is roasting the british army but from a historically accurate point of view. My great grandfather was in the navy and helped with the extraction of British troops from dunkirk, which only even really happened because the majority of the allied forces were ill-prepared and as he mentioned, they all made very few advancements from what they had in WW1 whereas Germany almost entirely revamped their military. So yes he's roasting the WW2 British army in the nicest and most factual way he can lol

Also look Italians on eastern front at earlier campaign of ww2. Even I was shocked to see the Italian efficiency. During retreat from Egypt, Italians didn't just run away. The way they resisted was completely different of the image we have of Italy. Also the raid of Alexzandria.

The Reichswehr, limited by treaty to 100,000 men, trained its personnel to officer standards. That allowed rapid expansion in the 30s with lots of high quality non-coms and junior officers. Low level leaders win fights.

I am sick and tired of people demanding that I conceptualize warfare in terms of divisions. To do so is impossible/incorrect. A division is ~78 companies that may or may not fight together. Squad, Platoon, and Company. Everything "higher" is more of a geographic/organizational concept.
The importance of junior officers goes way back in the army. The german since the franco-prussian war has started to value independent junior officers acting in support of the greater battle.
@@reidparker1848 There's just some units which are more like administrative designations than practical tactical units. At division level you start to deal with things like rear support functions like signals and division AA and vehicle recovery. It's still important stuff, combat units would break down fast without them, but it's a fair bit above the tactical level.
Really appreciate these videos which aren't afraid to compliment the axis and point out the allied flaws. Being British myself, it is a bit sad seeing how much we failed at the start of the war, but knowing we stuck with the allies until the end of the war and never surrendered makes me happy.
Just the way it is ... the aggressive nations that initiates war usually has everything planned years in advance, and worked a long time to perfect military weapons to ensure victory.. and the defending nations are usually overwhelmed and underprepared. Then it is up to the collective efforts of every other nation to cooperate.
I mean they’re pointing out flaws that didn’t make a difference on that battlefield for example with the helmets both were designed to stop shrapnel as neither helmet could stop a bullet or with the machine guns the mg 42 had a massive rate of fire but it’s rate of fire ruined it accuracy so therefore they aren’t pointing out flaws in the allies they’re just glorifying nazis

Yes, the British did enter WWII with the same rifle they had in WWI. However, pretty much everyone else did as well. The only country that didn’t was the United States (the M1 Garand had been adopted in 1936, although large numbers of 1903 Springfields did see service during the war).

There's always militia units and Home Guard and police troops that get stuff from the stockpiles from the last war. German second- and third-line troops don't have the fancy stuff.

So this video makes out the SMLE to be a when it talks about the equipment. That is simply false, the reason the british didnt change their service rifle between the wars is due to the fact that the SMLE was a fantastic rifle, short, handy, accurate and reliable, with a large magazine and a fast bolt, the number 4 was definitely an upgrade, giving it a the minor upgrade of a bit of a longer barrel which improved its accuracy a bit and slightly increased the velocity of the round thereby giving it more energy and making it more powerful, the real upgrade was the rear sight, which was moved closer to the shooter and was an aperture style of sight, which are in general a better, more accurate, easier to use sight.
K98 was still superior.
