On a more serious note, I really love his consistency about talking about game play limitations vs reality.
Same
It’s why he’s so good at this. He’s clearly played a *lot* of these and other FPS games over the years.
No other gun youtuber reviewing video games does that, which is what i love about him
Everyone does. People have been mentioning that since the beginning of him appearing on this show.
Exactly, him pointing out that the rear aperture of the M1 Garand in pretty much every WW2 game is way too big, but acknowledges that it's a design choice.
The game has nice little detail about K98k when you see other soldiers sprinting with this gun. They're holding them with one hand by the middle which was part of a combat drill for German soldiers.
Yeah I think they're going to copy the RO2 mechanic of soldier identification : axis powers hold the firearm in one hand while allied powers hold it with both hands which facilitate both limitating TKs and target aquiring. Since this games allow limited customization it would be good to have this mechanic especially from afar.
@@breizhrudie4757 I think the kar98k is only gun that has this animation. The rest of axis guns are held "normally" in both hands.
@@JackTheNoober yeah this. however they may be "copying" RO2 because it's a fantastic way to acquire targets in a game that doesn't rely on a minimap and has friendly fire. It's definitely historically accurate, so it works out and should be the standard in all WW2 shooters.
@@leeonardodienfield402 yeah I know and I loved that fact in RO2. Made it so much easier to identify a running target far away.
@@JackTheNoober HLL is one of the best shooters around too. Awesome game.
I love how his face lights up when he is talking about a gun he really likes. You can tell he wants to give them all a fair and impartial review, but a shine of boyish glee peeks through and that's my favorite part.
I like how this guy knows enough about games to understand why they often change small details. He is hella smart and he not only knows his guns and history but also about games and such
Well theres an easy answer to that.
He is/was/still is a gamer, i heard him mention Resident Evil and Doom so ofcourse he grew up playing that good stuff.
@@Erikcleric yep, he even said that fallout new vegas, and fallout 3 are some of his favorite games

You’re right. And that is a really good thing because like things with the M1 sight, if it were realistic it would be impossible to aim using the screen. And it’s good that he understands that

@Balkan Kneecap thief yeah problem?
As an avid player of HLL I can say there's numerous times you get killed while trying to cycle and aim the bolt actions. Having the M1 can be a big advantage
Close range engagements on maps like Saint Mere Eglise and Du Mont going through the bocage and villages are the ones that show the difference for me. As a german at point blank range you've got one shot and one shot only, as a yank you can magdump the Garand.
@@Altarill If you level up rifleman the germans can get the genfer 43 as their rifle
@@Fancypants-yo1tf There are better things to level up before rifleman, for example, the assault class is the most worth leveling up class in the game, the 6x grenade loadout or the satchel loadout (specialy on the german side with the STG+satchel) makes it a very reliable choice for attack, or the support, with it you have the level 3 rifleman loadout but with supplies at also level 3, making it an even more useful loadout for the team... Rifleman is a class for begginers who don't want to take a role that other one will use better than them or a role for when almost every useful role is already taken. Personaly I wouldn't level up rifleman if it's not on puntual games where you use it for the second reason, because for when you will be able to level it up near to g43 loadout you would be a more experienced player so reason one is a nonsense. Not mentioning that if you are playing only kar on german side is because you want to, every class have a loadout without the kar, except sniper class, for obvious reasons
Why bother with rifles when you can still get 5 MP40s in a squad? Games fucken busted in its current state.

Ah, finally someone who sees and is pointing out exactly what I noticed! This is why History Nerds like us like Hell Let Loose, they really did a great job with most of the weapons. I also noticed that the MG42 doesn't have a AA gun sight part, but the firing etc is good. Also, the uniforms they made are almost 100% accurate! They did make some mistakes, especially with the latest updates, like a tricolor shield on a M42 helmet.. But only History guys will notice! 😂
the Russian smoke grenade in the game didn’t even exist to the 1950s. The devs are bastards who lied to their kickstarters and consistently under deliver.
@@wardenstone6021 Is only game, why you have to be mad?
@@FreeRangeLemon because the hundreds, and in some poor bastards cases, thousands, of dollars pumped into the game, along with the thousands of hours people have put into it, have been for nought for most people. As they were sold that “WW2 has never been played the way it was meant to”. It was shoved to people as a realistic world war 2 shooter, with a proper command structure whilst also have RTS elements with the supplies and all that shit. Let’s look at that now then shall we?
The game is more akin to a slightly more “realistic” battlefield hardcore than anything else. It’s so realistic when 5/6 men in your squad in the German side have MP40s Whisky the other guy is hauling 6 drum mags for his MG42 without issue.
And the RTS? Guess we can go fuck ourselves. They release the game out of beta and still change KEY GAME FEATURES, nodes are brain dead. They were always shitty, but now? Now it’s just “put them literally anywhere”. There is no strategy about nodes. Like most all kickstarters, it’s unkept promises upon unkept promises. The development of this game should be a case study in community management. What they do is what you don’t do. The community manager never talks on the discord, and let’s the poor fucken programmer say his opinion and it always ends up biting them in the ass. It’s just kinda pitiful, and this is coming from someone that is in the competitive scene from the game, and has met some of my best friends through it. It’s just a true shame that it’s going down this route

7:57 the rear sight used to be correct in the game's early access phase but the community complained it was too hard to use so they changed it to what you see now. I was against the change but it was a minority opinion.
this is honestly why i have mixed feeling about EA in general and have spoken of this in the HLL discord for a while. the game atm is a far cry from what was promised durring kickstarter and at the start of EA and many people complain that the devs lied to them.... the devs did not what happened was the community changed the game to what it is now and now that people are upset with changes made the devs have stopped listening to them as much because as i think it was Jambax in the discord who said "people just dont know what they want one person has one opinion on what the game should be another person has another you cant make them both happy" which has lead to the unfortunate op and garrison debacle's. all these problems i honestly feel are entirely depended on the early access system as people have opinions on mechanics before the game is even near finished making the game "evolve" differently then what was originally imagined
I mean they could maybe just do a subtle movement to accompany the recoil. The sight staying perfectly still is a bit jarring.
Well at the end of the day it's a game,if something takes away the fun and enough people hate it then it makes sense devs would do something about it...unless they want people to quit.
Fuck the community; as if thompson/garand isn't better than mp-40/kar98k already, they even want better sights.
In my opinion the thing that Hell Let Loose and practically every other game gets wrong with the portrayal of iron sights isn’t a technical limitation but a simple failure of logic. There is a confusion going on between the 3D character model in the 3D world, the 3D model of the rifle itself, the viewpoint of the character in that world and how that viewpoint should be presented to the player so it accurately as possible represents the viewpoint of the character model. They model the gun as though the character model isn’t holding the rifle as they would in reality (with the rear sight very close to their eye) but awkwardly at about a foot or so in front of his face. At this distance it becomes necessary to make changes to the rear sight to stop it obstructing the overall sight picture. No account is given to the fact that the person using the “sight picture” is not the 3D character model themselves but the player sitting at least another foot or more from the screen. Therefore it becomes necessary for the screen to simulate what the player would see if he was using the sight (as opposed to what the character model “sees”) - ie much more “zoomed in”, the rear sight large in the field of view but in the periphery and de-focused, with the focus being on the front sight. There are actually some games that get this right, two off the top of my head are the original Operation Flashpoint and the Brothers in Arms games. If you don’t know what I’m talking about just google image Brothers in Arms iron sights and you will see what I mean.
So when do we get a game starring Jonathan Ferguson as the main character, breaking the fourth wall and commenting on how some of the details and mechanics of his guns seem a little off, but it's OK because it's a gameplay deliberation?
In the game we find out he has mastered every single weapon in the Royal armory.
I would back this on a crowd funded project
i would play it
I think a video on the top 5 guns or something Jonathan would like to see in a video game, and why, which rarely or never feature in video games could be interesting.
@@Rroff2 couldn’t agree more
Whilst at uni, I interned at the Royal Armouries and was lucky enough to have a tour around the firearms collection with Jonathan: and it was brilliantly fascinating.
Loving this series of videos!
Hey Jonathan! Back when Hell Let Loose was still in its infancy, the rear aperture of the M1 Garand was actually very realistic. They had to patch it to be larger because people kept complaining that they couldn't see anything through it, and that the German counterpart in-game (The Kar98) had much more user-friendly iron sights.
it was good balance but nooo the US players cant shoot straight
Man I haven't played HLL in a while because I just like Post Scriptum better. But yeah, the sights used to be way better by miles.
@@Joe-sc8fu I like Post Scriptum more as well being a Squad guy, but HLL has literally 10x the players on an average night. It's gotten a lot better since I last played, I had a lot of fun last night.
@@kamikazemelon787 Its for sure a fun game, I just like the overall gameplay of PS. Even though its player base is smaller.
Same for the Thompson with the pinhole rear aperture, it was useless with it.
This video really highlighted how ingenious Hell Let Loose's role and squad organization works. It strikes a pretty good balance between realism and actual gameplay balancing, while also encouraging teamwork in a more organic way.
Would love to see Red Orchestra 2 weapons, especially the overheating mechanic on the MG42.
i was looking for this comment right after i watched ,as far as i know red orchestra 2 is the only game where you can change the fire rate of a BAR and change barrel on mg34 and mg42,also you can switch U notch sight and peep sight on thompson M1A1,he already look at vietnam

I worked on the QA team for Hell and I remember a bug going in for the manufacturer text on the in-game model being a company that didn't start producing the Garand until the Korean War. International Harvester I think they were called. Was always curious if Jonathan would comment on that if he ever wound up doing Hell's weapons lol looks like it got fixed though.
Yup. Winchester and Springfield got the contracts for Garands during WWII, then International Harvester and Harrington & Richardson got supplemental contracts during the Korean War when demand outpaced production at Springfield
They fixed it with the right manufacture.
Hell let loose has a QA team? From the shit they spew recently like the horrendously optimised Stalingrad and all the bugs from U10, you wouldn’t think so
@@wardenstone6021 they had.
I think New Vegas has one of the most accurate depictions of the M1 rear sight. Yes, the Battlerifle and This Machine is chambered in .308 instead of .30-06, but it's still a pretty good depiction
Agreed. Actually the 7.62x51mm Garand not only existed, but was mainly used by the US Navy for ship rack weapons, well into the 1970s.
I love that he's clearly played some games and understands some inaccuracies are for balancing reasons.
Hey Jonathan the german MG34 gunners got actualy trained to use the bipod as a frontgrip to fire from the hip during a assault or close combat situation. I have a training manual (H.Dv. 130/2a) from 1941 for the infantry company where its shown and discribed.

Regarding limiting availability of the StG44: it as well as the BAR are only available to the Automatic Rifleman role and each 6 man infantry squad can only have one those. Same thing with the sniper: the scoped rifle is only available to the Sniper role, which can only be taken in a 2 man recon squad and the other person in that squad has to be the Officer role with the binoculars.
you can have 3 B.A.R's . One is automatic rifleman (default), one is machine gunner (lvl 3) and one is assault (lvl 3).
Stg is limited, but not to one. Level 9 assault Loadout also gets one. BAR is available to the MG at level 3 and the American assault at level 3 as well. The balance often comes from the Loadout being harder to get to, or the Loadout having drawbacks, like the MG BAR user having a ton of rounds, but no grenades.
7:54
This is due to the fact that in most cases they simply wish to make the M1 garand slightly more balanced due to the significantly smaller sight as compared to the video game counterpart. If it was smaller it would create a disadvantage due to the fact that the screens are flat and static, whereas when actually using the rifle in real life you'd be able to use your peripheral vision to see around the sight and get a better picture. It's simply because the screens are flat and there's no real easy way to see around it when you are looking down the sight.
The Stg44 is limited to only two roles in game on those being the Automatic Rifleman(Which is the standard weapon of this class), and the Assaulter Role(Which you unlock at Assaulter level 9). So the implementation of the STG 44 is very limited as not every squad in every match has either or both of these roles within their six man element. Great video as well!
I haven't played HLL since before this vid came out, but I was going to comment something similar.
Roles are also limited per-team! This means if you're trying to run & gun with a machine gun, instead of aiming it properly, you'll usually get re-assigned to a different role.
I love how much Jonathan _clearly_ enjoys his work. It's awesome, the collaboration between the two, GameSpot and the Royal Armouries Museum, and I really appreciate the real perspective on weapons we've been using in games since we were kids.

Very interesting, thanks for the vid!
It would be fun if Jonathan took a look at Killing Floor 2, considering how well made the guns are in that game.
I subbed horse friend! You known now!
I second this. The gun play is so visceral in that game
Especially some of the DLC/Season Pass guns, like the FAMAS with the Under-Barrel Master Key.
Like, a lot of games have featured rifles or SMGs with grenade launcher attachments, but seldom have I seen master key attachments (Last game before KF2 that had that option that I played was Metal Gear Solid 5).
Another idea, have Jonathan look at the gun customization and potential combinations in Metal Gear Solid 5. Several shotguns can be unlocked as under-barrel attachments, as well as grenade launchers and even pistols. You could have a tranquilizer sniper rifle with a suppressed .45 as an under-barrel, or an anti-materiel rifle with a suppressed tranq pistol under-barrel, or even an assault rifle with a shotgun or grenade launcher under-barrel. Couple this with two primary weapon slots and a pistol slot and you can dump truck on any enemy once your research development has progressed enough.

I swear man, hearing and seeing an actual firearms expert critique video game firearms is so satisfying!
11:00 one thing I would mention that he didn’t cover is how accurate the depiction of the optics zoom actually is. A lot of times in games you’ll have an optic with a 4x, 6x, 10x etc magnification setting that is zoomed unlike its 25x. Realistically those targets would be small in comparison and it is very well executed there in the video. Quite noticeable for those of us that shoot a lot with magnified optics. That’s pretty neat actually

About the Kar 98K. I've always loved it in games (especially RO2, HLL and DoI) because, provided you often actually hit your targets, whatever is on the recieving end usually gets stopped dead in its tracks. That and there is just something cool about watching the casing get ejected every time.

@@1Maverick2 Most if not all of the weapons within Payday 2, barring certain melee weapons and a certain money burning flamethrower, are completely real and have direct real world counterparts. It’s not that unrealistic when looking at the weapons themselves.
@@decimation9780 At this point I'm just assuming you're all joking.
One thing I notice on nearly all M-1 Garands in WWII games is that they feature the T105 rear sight elevation pinion, which wasn’t adopted until after the war ended. Even this one in HLL makes that same mistake.
“You got 2 mg34 gunners”. Maybe , but one of those is an mg42. Maybe he is a 34 gunner borrowing a mates 42 for the day
8:20 I think a happy medium to this would be to have an accurate rear iron right, however it's mostly translucent. This would mimic the eye focusing in on the front sight post. It wouldn't totally eliminate the rear sight from view, but it would mostly be transparent so it wouldn't obstruct in game sighting.
Another solution is to go back to using 2D iron sights like Battlefield 2 did. Those were actually pretty realistic, however, they were just 2D images on the screen, instead of actually looking down the real 3D gun sights..

I’ve never handled an M1 Garand but I was a US soldier who’s used M4’s a lot, and the occasional M16. When I fired the Garand for the first time on headphones I dropped to the ground almost out of reflex because it simulated so much of the realism of an actual rifle caliber semi auto shot minus the delicious smell of gunpowder and the physical kick. Somehow, the percussion of the shot was more realistic than I’ve ever seen in a game and almost tricked my brain into thinking I was dealing with recoil.
And that’s when I decided it was worth the money to play.
7:59 What's interesting is that I think one of the only games I have played that have implemented an accurate rear aperture to the M1 Garand was Fallout: New Vegas. I think the Battle Rifle/This Machine (which is an M1) has that narrow rear sight.
Ironically yes. Leave it to FNV. A lot of other conventional guns in that game avoid the huge rear apatures as well, making the sights feel small or cluttered, but technically more realistic.
Yeah, and it makes the gun annoying as hell to use with those sights, which kinda shows why all other games have wider apertures.
Gee, I wonder what was one of the guns to make me turn "true iron sights: off" and proving Jonathan right? Especially since a "circle" in New Vegas is "decagon-circle!"
The Cowboy Repeater and Brush Gun have those small circle apertures for the rear sights as well, if I recall correctly. Made me very happy that the Lever Action Rifle in Fallout 4 had more traditional sights (Even though Bethesda porked the reload to always load 5 shells regardless of if you've only fired 2 or 3, requiring modders to make new animation assets and custom scripting to get a proper shell per shell reload to work).

Ah yes :D it was a great game. Scooting at the line of Warhammer game without the possibility of copyright infringement. Fuller auto yes. Loved that gun :)
Ah, the reason the Thompson looks short seems to be because it does not have a stock, or am I mistaken?
Anyway, hope you let him react to Deus Ex HR and MD guns.
The stock is held in under the armpit instead of the butt of the stock on the shoulder. It should be noted that the Thompson was intended to be fired from the hip.
@@mortum_potato6124 Ahh, I see. Thanks.
I think part of the problem might be the FOV slider could be all the way out
No, the problem is the model is too thin; as Jon said the real Thompson is a large and heavy gun; it looks tiny in the player characters hands (unless the GI is also a really big guy).
@@stevemc6010 It's kinda like the M9 in COD4. The M9 is a relatively big and wide handgun IRL, but in-game it's really thin.
Next:
Enlisted
Verdun
Post Scriptum
Tannenberg
Beyond the wire
Sniper Elites
Yes I hope he reacts to enlisted especially with all the rare premium weapons
@@TK--cs4xo That game is ass. Most the weapons are locked behind a paywall and the game play seems so stiff.
@@darkmemes953 bruh if you haven’t play the game don’t talk shit about it most of the weapon can be unlock through leveling up (except for the premium squad you have to pay to get) and the gameplay do have some flaw especially plane balancing but it’s still in open beta and it’s a free to play game. It’s freaking rare to see a f2p WW2 games nowadays especially the one that are friendly to f2p players and still has a live service with an active community, what more can you ask for
@@TK--cs4xo I did play, also you can't deny the grind takes forever to unlock those items. Also, its not that realistic and the fucking Thompson isn't even unlockable, but the sten is for the US, bruh.
Ah, finally a man that recognises Verdun and Tannenberg.
5:45 I miss the time when the germans required some skill, where it was almost every time a Kar vs Garand encounters, because you didn't have a choice of getting an mp in most roles. Now with the capability of full SMG squads that magic get lost... I'm still using the kar a lot, I like it way to much xD, but the historical accuracy of the almost every german squad with at least 3 Kar was beautiful (Ok maybe I miss that times because since U6-7 the optimisation was better than now, but I'm not lying at all! xD)
Check out Post Scriptum, it's much more accurate in this regard. Most players on every faction other than Americans have bolt actions, only certain limited special roles get semi/full autos.
@@Noxian16 Yup, I in fact own it now, I'm still a HLL player, but yeah, I sometimes play PS and it's pretty fun and accurate, tho it has very few player, just 4-5 full servers at evening in EU servers
Very good work, specially acknowledging the gameplay sacrifices made to balance the game and make it playable.
I would very much enjoy his takes on the weapons in Post Scriptum. I feel like the M1 sights are a little more accurate looking. Also the added French weapons.
2:50 MG42 is clipping through him. That’s why it looks short
I'd like to see Jonathan try to explain using cats as suppressors in Postal
Postal 4 could give him a whole lot of stuff to look at, especially if the Royal Armory has a super soaker they can try to mod with swappable fluid tanks full of gasoline, urine, vomit, etc.
@@Foxxie0kun I really want him to see the catnip reloads now
I'd like to see Enlisted by Gaijin, the weapon accuracy of that intrigues me.
There is some strange and stupid weapon choices in Enlisted
Awesome idea, now I'm dying to see Jonathan dumbfounded by the fact you gotta die 3500 times to be able to get away from the M1903 to build and improve your own Garand by destroying multiple other Garands instead of just being fucking issued a Garand
overall it would probably be pretty similar, except that from what i see weapons do have noticably more recoil in enlisted
Interesting name for a game I must say
@@gkky_ throw money at the snail and you will be issued one
Not sure how accurate it is to real life but my favourite gun in HLL is the M38 Mosin-Nagant, fast firing and powerful
yea the stg in game does not have fire select, you have to just time it to single fire it
Pardon me but Jonathan just looks like Max Payne some how. Also i'd love to see his reaction in Homefront Revolution's weapon customization
He looks like Jordan Peterson
the dustcover of the stg44 was closed and the empty shells flew through metal
Reported graphics bug. Will be fixed soon. Good spot tho.
On older game version, it was open and animated.
So i remember when i first played this game the M1 Garand actually did have the tiny peep sight on it but was changed i believe due to the player base asking for a larger rear sight
Same with Thompson sight, sadly :(
I would love to see his reaction/thoughts about the Metal Gear Solid Series.
As a HLL player, I can confidently tell you that the only thing more infuriating than getting killed by a semi-auto or SMG while using a bolt action, is getting killed by a bolt action rifle while using a semi-auto/SMG.
I don't know if it's really possible but there a lot more guns to cover in CoD WW2 that haven't popped up much. Thought that would be interesting as a part 2, especially since CoD Vanguard is coming up.
Also, I might be wrong but the other gunner was holding a MG 42 and not another MG 34.
You are very right, its an MG42.
Johnathan probably paused on the mg34, but the editor filled it in with some mg42 footage because the mg34 footage was too short.
@@themanwithallthewrongopini3551 well everything he says matches up with the footage, but I could be wrong
@@khye1642 Nvm just rewatched it I guess he assumed they both had mg34s idk why he thought it was an mg34
@@themanwithallthewrongopini3551 all good 😂
I hope he reviews Post Scriptum as the weapons in that game are very well modeled and sound amazing! The M1 Garand in PS does have the realistic rear sight aperture
13:31 i wish i could see his reaction to this weapon's appearance in the second season of Darker Than Black.
Firearms expert over here calling an MG-42 a MG-34. What a champ
The PPSh-41 is indeed, an absolute treat to use. It is my favorite submachinegun in the game.
On watching this again, I've come to realize that the most enjoyable of Jonathan's videos here are either a) when he gets to go deep into a game that's put into a lot of effort; or b) when he's just flabbergasted by how weird and silly a game is.
Agreed
Will you do this for Post Scriptum as well?
2:10 the other machine gunner seems to be holding an MG42 and not an MG34.
14:35 Having select fire was the whole point of the STG-44 and all the prototypes, so yes, it does have select fire.
But in game it doesn't, and he's bringing that up. In game you do have to tap fire it to get the 'single shot'.
Wonderful video. Thank you for putting this together!
Please make a series called "Food Expert Reacts" where some random food expert reacts to different foods in games
thats a really bad idea bro
@@barrystanton3613 How so lol
@@MrTeton because how would it work? 1. Majority of games don't even focus on food 2. it would just be based off of looks. I could understand for a game like cooking sim but anything else just wouldn't make sense. There isn't enough food related content in most games to even make a series.
@@MrTeton I like the idea but I think Binging with Babish got that covered in that area I think Johnathan should cover Guns in Tv Shows such as The Sopranos Breaking Bad The Wire and Fargo and and Movies like Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down Training Day especially like Don't be a Menace and Malibu's Most Wanted
@@SavageBunnyGetMoney I don’t think he’ll cover tv shows on this channel, seeing that it’s called “Gamespot” and not TVspot. But seeing a firearms expert pick apart tv/movie guns does sound neat.
Hey you should look at post scriptum! It’s made in the squad engine and focuses on operation market garden, invasion of France, and Normandy. It’s got a very realistic gameplay and it’s weapon and sound design is gorgeous!
Post scriptum please, amazingly realistic game with awesome gun play been keen to see what jonathan thinks of it
Sadly when the game first released the M1 Garand had the realistic small rear aperture but it was changed because people complained about it
I have fired both the Mauser 98k and the Mosin Nagant rifle in real life before. The mosin I fired had the cruciform fold out bayonet and a cool thing about it was that it was made and used in the Vietnam War.
