      Veganism is currently losing the propaganda war, since meat is where the big money is.
      A lot of vegan girls I know just cut guys off, or won't date non-vegans (It's a bit tougher for men to be so selective). Anyway, for me, long-term it's a waste of time to spend too much time with people who insist on eating meat and won't look at facts.

      Yeah, on Facebook I'm a member of a group that is actually called, "Bad Vegans," as I was transitioning to becoming Vegan, but wasn't quite there yet. The worst attacks and detractions came from the hardcore vocal Vegans, who attempted to police every thread, declaring specific people or practices to not be Vegan, or, "Since you're only 98% Vegan, you should call yourself Plant-Based," as if someone is trying to steal their Valour. Meanwhile, I've stopped trying to discuss certain things with certain Vegans, such as consumption of sustainably produced honey, or eating fruits and vegetables that had to be pollinated by bees that were trucked around for their labour. I have tried to explain that this is actually an example of a mutualistic relationship, because honey bees, via Natural Selection, always naturally produce more honey than they need, from the natural state of them always making extra as a hedge against wild animals getting into their hives and eating their stores. When I have been told that bees don't make "extra" honey, I have to point out to them the dozens of houses every year where people end up having to do major renovations, because honey bees set up a colony in their walls, and made so much extra honey over the three to six year period between when they began and when it's discovered, that it literally start oozing through the interior walls. Our pets are also a mutualist relationship, as they need humans for most of their food shelter (dogs, at least), and we give each other companionship. Then there's the pet food problem. Vegan dogfood exists, and sustained one of my dogs, a Chihuahua, to almost age 19. Vegan cat food is trickier, and understandably, nobody wants to harm their cat by nutrient deficiencies, but Science knows what cats need, and various companies have made it for a couple decades now. Anyway, I'm on my own Path, as are we all, only able to judge ourselves compared to yesterday, within the systems we grow up.
      Change takes time. Extending kindness even to human animals garners more interest, rather than having Omnis imagine joining a back-biting club of neverendingly whiney assholes, who feel the need to jump on every little discrepancy to make their point.

      There's something to be said for recontextualizing the question. Refuse to make it a counter argument, because intellectual dishonesty, and ignorance regarding formal logic rather than emotional reasoning (this describes most people) just result in defensiveness with most people.
      Approach the question from another angle, using terms they don't have a negative emotional association with, and reframe it as a question that you are both free to actually engage your minds and natural morals with. It's more difficult for people to fall into dogmatic, pre packaged responses when they are faced with a fresh scenario they haven't heard strawmanned or misrepresent by some pseudointellectual shit-Gibbon.

And, trust me, you didn't just get a "no" if you asked to just eat non-animal products, you got told instead that you needed psychiatric help, were going to die of malnutrition/illness/were a commie, etc. Animal farming is a big profit industry and was being highly developed back then~state govenments had a hold (as always) on the schools and the minds of the young which they did not want to relinquish. I was raised on a small farm, basically just raising enough for our own family. We raised chickens, geese, rabbits and pigs for meat. But meat was expensive in labor if not in money and we ate many a vegetarian meal. I still have fond memories of meals of green beans, cornbread and onion. My Mom was aware of current official positions on nutrition, but she never thought we needed meat every day. (Btw, we wasted little and ate animal parts that the average modern meat-eater would quail at: kidneys, brains, feet, etc. Tripe--which we had to buy, since we couldn't afford to raise cows--was a special treat.)

I started New Year's Eve 2019 and here I am! 64 years and prob will have lost 64 pounds by this New Year's Eve; that will put me just under 200 lbs. I feel great, my bp, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, and weight are all down. I feel so much better and the weight is just falling off. I don't feel deprived, in fact, I don't think that the feelings I had before were actual hunger. I think they were a combination of guilt and bodily revulsion at what I was putting into it. My mom told me she had to 'just force me to eat meat'. *Shudder* She did what she was taught by her grandmother who raised her. There was no internet or source of instant knowledge like we have now. She eventually died of dementia at (wait for it) 64. I am so much better and starting to actually run. I walk about two miles a day right now. I haven't run since I was a teen. I mean what AP's did to her and my dad was unbelievable but I am still looking out for some doctor to pin me down and say that I need to do this or that (take their meds) because my mom had dementia and it therefore will be hereditary. But currently, my own doctor is pretty good and she is interested in my progress, is rather impressed she has said. I have hypothyroidism and other issues w old age that will probably not go away completely but we will see. Other cultures don't have those problems as bad with things that Americans especially are taught are just natural products of aging. They aren't. All kinds of things can be reversed and don't have to happen at all.

    As soon as someone expresses doubts about my dietary choices, I say this:
    You may have your own opinion and I respect that, but the concensus among nutritionists is as follows: "appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes." What do you think of that?
    They usually switch to another topic.

    My favorite come back to the "why do vegans eat things that look like meat?" is... the same reason people like decaf coffee/soda, or sugar free baked goods! They want the taste of those things without the ingredient that they deem unsavory/negative.
    So basically replace sugar free with cruelty free! BAM!
    Love from your fellow Iowa vegans!! :)

    • @fearofaveganplanet8513
      @fearofaveganplanet8513 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, this is an acceptable answer. But I think often what they are implying when they ask is that the fact vegans want these items seems to be evidence that it's "natural" for humans to eat meat, and that they are tricking their bodies and cheating themselves out of what they really need. I usually say that people have grown up with those foods and sometimes want something similar to that as a familiar comfort food, but without the suffering.

    *On the "Preachy" vegan argument:* I really hate the idea that "good vegans" are quiet vegans and how even many vegans - looking for approval from carnists - ascribe to it. It is not moral to do harm, but it also is not moral to ignore harm. Like - if you saw someone beating their kids or promoting beatings for children, wouldn't you say something? Wouldn't it be wrong not to?? I talk about veganism and oppose the promotion of carnism because I feel morally obligated to do so.
    That said - I don't agree with the idea that all carnists are evil. I seperate moral/immoral *acts* from people, because people are complex and do a variety of moral and immoral things, on a spectrum of morality (from donating a kidney to recycling, from cutting in line to murder). I don't think being vegan necessarily makes someone a more moral *person* than someone who consumes animal products, and I think it's ineffective advocacy to treat carnists as though they are necessarily less moral people. HOWEVER, even if carnists can rightly complain about having been demonized by a vegan, "some vegans being mean" obviously doesn't justify doing harm to animals or the planet.

    • @decentaur5040
      @decentaur5040 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      We were all brought up to eat meat and dairy in this carnist culture, so of course, eating meat and dairy doesn't necessarily automatically make you an immoral person. HOWEVER, if you were confronted with actual facts about how much the animals suffer, over and over again, and STILL insist on justifying the culture you were brought up in, then at a certain point it DOES become a personal choice that you consciously choose to make. And this is the REAL reason why vegans who talk about veganism are vilified, because carnists know in their heart of hearts, that so long as they can feign ignorance, they can continue to see themselves as "moral" people, but if they are given the actual information and facts over and over again, the more information they are given, and the more they STILL insist on not changing their ways, at a certain point, it DOES make them immoral.

    • @SolarScion
      @SolarScion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's just an "Us vs Them", defensive strawman reaction because they feel morally challenged, and people act dishonest and even lie, exaggerate, and misrepresent their own beliefs when they feel their ideology and person are threatened. This is an unfortunate effect of living in a time when people still base their beliefs on dogma and irrationality, and are thus intellectually unsophisticated and so fail to separate their beliefs from their Identity. It's why American politics is a shit-show, too. But that was made that way intentionally within the past 40 years.

    All you do by eating more cholesterol is forcing your liver to deal with all this extra cholesterol. Doesn't your liver do enough already? Dealing with alcohol, medications, dealing with other shit that doesn't need to be in the body. Does it need to be strained any further? Get real, wake up.

      Hahaha, show me one plant based food that has more nutrition than liver ? How many supplements you have to take to be a vegan ?

    • @Poifix
      @Poifix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sidsnyder8043 Vegans only need to take b12. If they eat a well planned diet that is. But everyone is recommended to take b12. Even meat eaters. Anyone who lives in an area with lacking sunshine should take vitamin D. Liver is one exception in terms of "nutrition". But that doesn't outweigh the negatives. You still have no excuses.

    • @SittingKittyColorado
      @SittingKittyColorado 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sidsnyder8043 Excessive vitamin A and copper. Low in many minerals including potassium, no fiber, so little in carbs it doesn't even register in daily RDA, I'm unsure of antioxidants like polyphenols but pretty sure they are non-existent in liver -- vitamin E is low, low in many b vitamins, teeny amount of vitamin C, microscopic amounts of vitamin K, no calcium, low magnesium, etc.
      There are no superfoods, not plants, not animals. You're essentially stating that liver is a superfood. Superfoods are a myth.

    I swear every vegan starts to turn a yellow grey colour then loses their period, their hair, then their teeth, then all their collagen. At least add insects since you kill billions anyways. Herbivores chew the cud or have several stomach chambers, we don't. And I'm not just being a vegan basher it genuinely upsets me that young people are becoming so unhealthy and eating so many fruits etc flown from half way across the world and parents are feeding their children insufficient diets. Some to the point of actual starvation. Just at least give the kids some insects.

      @@taintmueslix Thanks for your reply. Multiple multi-year trials have demonstrated that whole food plant-based diets that are very low in fat stop even serious heart disease in its tracks and people get BETTER. Most angina goes away in a few days to a few weeks. In the 2014 Esselstyn study, rates of major CVD events were 100 times lower among people eating his diet than among similar patients with heart disease who went off the diet. These are earth-shaking improvements. As someone who lives and teaches in the Cleveland area, I have had multiple students volunteer how the Esselstyn diet saved their husband's life. So yes, eat a nutrient dense, whole food, plant-based diet that is very low in fat and has lots of greens and your cardiovascular health will improve. Take care.
