    i found that the biggest bang(performance factor) for buck upgrades are, tires, brake pads, anti roll bars,suspension (handling). Weight reduction, Final drive upgrade, exhaust (power). couple these with good engine oil, spark plugs. get used to how the car feels now first. After some time, progress into horsepower enhancement, with intake upgrades, engine upgrades, a tune with an ECU. But TAKE THINGS SLOW, as once u give your car in for tuning, there will be some new headaches.. which u may not want. because with the cost of secondary mods, you may end up ruining the car, with a hole in your pocket! So enjoy being a car enthusiast! but control the expense!

      Rule of thumb, horsepower is the last thing you should upgrade. By far the biggest improvement in fun and laptimes come from handling upgrades. Especially tires and suspension, in the case of laptimes sometimes wings/Spoilers/splitters.
      This is a bit tricky but removing weight also helps. Significant weight reductions however can be pricy and remove safety/comfort features. But for a track car they make sense.

      First kick everything out u don't need, then lower the car, then get widened steel rims and nice sticky wheels,then upgrade the brakes and your diff... You'll see for yourself that after these changes, horsepower isn't key for fun 😅

    Engine mods
    1. Swapped cast iron pistons ----> forged iron.
    2. Swapped "I" beam connecting rods ----> performance "H" beam.
    3. Swapped Overhead cams to high lift and changed my lifters to performance lifters
    4. Ported both intake and exhaust headers.
    5. Change exhaust manifold to ----> exhaust headers then wrapped with head-shield material.
    6. Upgraded to a performance catalyst convert (High flow) and muffler.
    7. Increased exhaust pipe diameter to 3.5 inches.
    8. Precision Turbo 6262 Turbocharger kit to upgrade from N/A to ---> a Turbocharged engine.
    9. Add a custom programmable ECU and map it.
    10. performance clutch kit stage 3.
    The rest i.e suspension, tires and brakes is included in this video.
    The result, for VW Passat b5.5 2.0 N/A: a Jump from 115 Hp to ----> 569 Hp to the wheel. @ max safe boost which is 22 psi.
    I though is might help someone, somewhere

      turbo upgrade 1 to 4 on the list (took 6 months) Eating a way some of my salary.
      The turbo kit and installations (another 8 months) and so on. Add to that, I am a good

      Not necessarily.
      The Subaru he mentioned already has front and rear sways.
      And they... like most sway bars from the factory, ARE SET UP TO BE UNDERSTEER BIASED.
      Let me repeat myself just in case you heard wrong
      The car is set up to understeer with the factory sway bars and alignment. Ie: unbalanced. Intentionally. By the people that designed the thing.
      commonly - they put a fat front sway on a car and run a smaller rear.
      So it is with WRXs and STIs
      By JUST replacing the rear bar and end links with something stiffer than stock you pretty much transform the handling bias of the car.
      You go from understeering pig to neutral or mild oversteer. Futher refinements can be had by doing a performance alignment.
      It is one of the best bang for buck handling mods one can do to a WRX or STI.
      Stiffer rear sway, with top quality end links.
      The Front sway is fine (maybe do the end links, just because) unless you are a track rat...
      But rear stock sway is a damn noodle on most generations of wrx/sti

    If you are going to mod your engine. Start with the ECU. Put in a tune able ECU with preformance read outs. That way when you want to slap on new intake manifolds and turbos you can adjust how the engine runs making the car run reliably with mods and getting the most out of your mods.

Maybe a little lighter but I drove a car that was a super light flywheel and you had to rev it way out to start or else you would stall out. Now I’m used to trucks so I guess you get used to 3500 rpm starts but I much prefer 1000 rpm starts in my truck for daily traffic

    Yes! People need to learn their cars first before they have an overbuild that they don't know how to drive. I started stock, to springs, and now full suspension work. All jokes aside , I’m surprised he didn’t mention a tune .. granted a tune really o my works on cars with some kind of forced induction (turbo .. supercharger)..
    but in my experience with both .. I found a cold air intake is a great start ! It’s not terribly expensive and you really notice quicker response from the engine and a slight power gain followed by better fuel economy . Enough to where you’ll be seeing good fuel economy even when you drive the car hard. .. in most situations you NEED a cold air intake in order to support certain mods. Such as headers .. a tune .. or Ext.
    Car culture is car culture .. opinions aside the love for Cars is universal . Regardless of what you drive !

    • @lysias55
      @lysias55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lxp3lxp3 any gains from a cold air intake are at high RPM, which you won’t be at on the street much. So yeah, he’s right, they’re a waste of money. I’d rather invest that money in headers, or suspension components.

    • @carson2687
      @carson2687 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pretty much if you drive a Subaru and want to go stage 2 or higher is when the intake would be useful, combining it with a custom tune, exhaust, injectors, fuel pump, etc, it gets costly for all that but that’s when it’s worth having an intake. And besides, if you don’t even have any other mods it still sounds wicked awesome, like having a freaking hurricane under your hood.

      I also sell cars at Carmax .. and it’s taught me that All cars are cool lol just to different people :)

    • @Mk6thicc
      @Mk6thicc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got gains off my IE CAI for my mk6 gti in the mid-high rpm range. Plus whoosh with no bov is so lovely. I think Tony was talking in generalities tbh; most cars people tune are 90s and didn't come stock turbo like 240sx (ka24, were talking state side atm), integras, vr6 gtis (r32/mk4 gti) etc. So the CAI isn't going to be a big of an improvement on those over a car that 1) has forced induction 2) the ecu can adjust to the increased air flow (though as OP states, tunes can help with this and a CAI is generally needed for anything stage 2 or above)

  • @ryanmichaelhaley

    Just bought a turbo 4 banger thunder chicken. Did coil overs, big brakes, new mounts, stock turbo just rebuilt with titanium impellers and a new intercooler, new cooling system with an aluminum radiator, new water pump, silicon hoses, ported and polished heads, new tires and cobra R wheels, and a new exhaust, also did all of the maintenance such as draining and flushing all of the fluids, and a bunch of weight savings like stripping headliner, and carpets, removed trunk liner, replaced most of the bolts in the body and suspension with titanium bolts, limited slip differential, seats by Bride, quick release steering wheel, 3 piece carbon ceramic clutch, new synchros, short throw shifter and a whole bunch of other mods.

    Catless exhaust, removed weight AND heat from the engine bay. Best mod I have done to date. My primary cats are right off the manifolds, so they retain a ton of under hood heat. This caused hot intake temps and poor performance until they came up to temp. So much heat that my hood was too hot to touch after even a short drive. A simple tune did away with the o2 code and no mufflers gave me a big smile. Now the engine can breathe and I can make pops and bangs all the time. Best mod so far.

    Cold air intakes work and will increase hp dramatically on large displacement engines *let's say 6.2 chevy truck and lt1-lt4 motors as well as 5.0's*
    I've seen someone gain 20 wheel hp on a new silverado on the dyno from just a cold air intake. Those were back to back runs, same climate and only an hour apart.

    • @ndexer
      @ndexer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LSX_ moe I don't think he's talking about those type of engines. I think he is talking about people who are new to it all and maybe just bought a let's say e36

      LSX_ moe however it can trigger the engine check light, you wont be running an optimal ecu tune unless it comes with it or you do a dino test

    • @soybeanrice
      @soybeanrice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ill bite. I had an LS3. I put in a BTR stage 3 cam, upped the valvetrain components and put on LT headers. Significant gain on the dyno. Later, I put on a cold air intake and a "rod mod" to the intake manifold. Got it retuned and back on the dyno. No peak gain, tiny low end gain.
      I'll also include that the cold air intake that I put on actually had a housing that required me to relocate my windshield washer reservoir so that I can put on a metal "scoop" in its place just to push air from the front bumper onto the intake, effectively making it a RAM air intake.
      Rod Mod to IM - 300
      Cold air intake - 400
      Waste of 700 + 300 for a tune and dyno.

  • @jsdnorman

    Good advice, except for the cold air intake though.. installed a cold air intake on my S3, definitely felt the gain in acceleration and overall top speed. Before the mod max speed was 260km/h, after mod 280km/h. Also had the exhaust redone with down pipe, most boxes removed except for one so the sensor doesn't throw a fault.
    For Turbo cars the cold intake will definitely help some gains, although with a naturally aspirated car, it might just make more noise then power.
    I agree with the overall video though.. great source of info from these guys.

      Cold air intake itself does shit. It works great at almost all cars if you install full intake kit with tubing etc. Then this screamy cone is realesing serious power out of an engine.

    • @WARBROTHER2
      @WARBROTHER2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They indeed do help and if it’s not for the extra 5-10 hp you get you also get better mpg. My Accord without one was needing to be filled up twice a week for the amount I drive and when I installed the air intake easily got 3 more miles to the gallon which adds up when you think about it, I think they’re overpriced yes but they have a place.

    It is important to stop and handle well. For power mods, in order of general expense, start with breathing mods. (Intake and exhaust) Some cars see really nice gains with a tune at this point but you can see benefits without one. Cams are one of the best HP per dollar you can buy, but normally require a tune. Nitrous is pretty much engine abuse for a daily driver, and it runs out. You can stay naturally aspirated (heads, headers,...) or go forced induction, but both routes require engine components to be specifically matched to work well together. There's too much engine theory for a TH-cam comment. Keep in mind some stock clutches (and automatics) really don't take power well, and can cause a real big hole in you pocket when they break. Edit: All cars are engineered differently and respond to mods differently. Cars with poorly designed air boxes will see real benefits from an intake, and there's some cars that will lose power. Research on what others have done to your particular car is the best resource. Also regular maintenance and high mileage services should be done before any investment in power.

    • @mikedj420
      @mikedj420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kylelaughinghouse1893 That's a good point, the diff ratio can change the car. You wont see it on a dyno because the operator is supposed to correct to 1:1 ratio to estimate horsepower at engine (minus drivetrain loss). But it can seriously effect acceleration. It's a real pain on my car, not only labor but requires ECU and TCU flash. And i'm happy at 3.38.

    • @thomasj1026
      @thomasj1026 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep thanks and its cheaper than the route in the video. I've never seen anyone start with suspension mods. Its a bad start unless you are tracking the car. He said CAI are a waste but failed to mention that no matter what you do to the engine you need to increase the amount of air that can go into your car if you want to maximize any power or torque gains. I agree 100% start with intake and exhaust faster in faster out.

      I mean most people that this video appeals to speed does more of less come from the engine. I doubt most of these people are taking their cars to the track so coilovers and breaks are basically negligible. Traction is obviously important but in a straight line it's only going to get you so far. Most people looking to modify their car just want that surge of execration while they rip down an on ramp burning through gears, and if you drive a stock turbo charged car you can get away with throwing 1500 bucks at a stage 1 tune and be perfectly happy.

    bro for me one of the best underrated mods i got is a cat back exhaust. so many people say u will not notice performance gains but if you look at the facts it logically makes sense you will get noticeable gains. My exhaust that came with my car was massive in weight just alone the muffler was a HUGE rectangle, after putting on a stainless steel magnaflow cat back with a way smaller muffler and mid resonator I lost so much weight and not to mention the restrictions I lost compared to the stock. Now combined with a upgraded high flow air filter and a chip tuner omfg this thing can go 50-100 way faster!

    • @ergopropterhoc

      i mean you're not wrong but top speed is just engine rpms -> top gear in trans -> final drive ratio in diff -> wheel/tire size, those are literally the only things that affect the top speed of your car
      you could spend $15k turning a 200hp brz into a 900hp brz but if you leave the trans/diff/wheels at stock ratios/sizes all you're gonna do is get to 150mph faster (admittedly a LOT faster)
