Getting an aftermarket exhaust for a car that is otherwise stock for the performance benefit is a complete waste of time and money. With just replacing the rear section you absolutely nothing but looks and sound. To get performance you need to replace the complete thing, and as he points out in the video to make power gains you'll need to change the geometry for it, which actually decreases your low end torque because you just can't have it both ways. The only (minor) performance gains people can get throughout the rev range are by actually removing the catalytic converter(s) and mufflers but then it's not apples to apples comparison because you've technically made the car illegal to drive on the public road.

@@BMWF15 I have always wondered what mod potential those cars have, that might be fun. I love my mustangs but they are probably the easiest things to mod, and the most often modded.

@@gpaje noobs straight pipe their sh*t, I've been there done that. You want a catback exhaust or an axle back with a mid pipe, straight piping is awful.
The trick to freeing up your exhaust is that you have to also free up your intake! A freed up exhaust does nothing if the intake is restrictive. Same the other way around. A freed up intake does nothing if the exhaust is restrictive! You get the best bang for your buck if you do both the intake and exhaust. This is where you will see your best increase in power and performance.
Hey Zack, just wanted to say thank you for creating this series, you gave me the confidence to start building my first project car (and first ever car also), thank you for the tutorials, the car in question is a Nissan sunny b13, and I love it :3
i think it's nice having a series like this, where the science behind why we do the mods and what we want from them is explained so well. It's great. :D
Man this series is great, I wish this had started earlier when I was still out looking for used cars, would have found those first couple videos super useful. Anyway now that I already have one I was looking to see what upgrades I could make to it, a few months ago. Now these videos can help with that lol
I think Magna flow makes some of the best headers and exhaust when it comes to complimenting equal sounds of engine/intake, and the rear exhaust note it's self being very smooth and clean.
@Richard Skipper Even tho many cars have variable valve timing, none of the usually have same kinda jump in power like older Vtec engines had. Not to say it is a good thing but non linear power band seems to be only VTEC thing.
It's not just the valve timing, but also valve lift, hence why the big power increase. Older systems took their time to engage, that's why the torque curve always comes down before spiking back up. This was solved with the introduction of the smoother yet no less effective i-VTEC.
I really appreciate how accurately you break down concepts so they are simple to understand but still correct. It seems like almost every video I watch on anything related to performance I am left going "Well yea kinda sorta but not really..." So far in this series you have been dead on with everything you have said and still managed to make it understandable to anyone. Gold star+ man.
Stainless steel does not rust or react with salt. The problem is, that it's never stainless steel - it's rust resistant steel. True stainless steel costs A LOT!
@@MrJObajobas What specific steels do you think are rust proof? The only rust proof steel I know of is H1 which contains no carbon, it is a precipitation hardened steel that contains nitrogen instead of carbon and does not rust chemically. It is not in any exhaust system out there.
The other thing to consider is that heat makes the metals more reactive. So even though 9/10 times stainless is corrosion resistant to brine, on a hot exhaust the corrosion resistance can be completely negated.

Loud pipes save lives? Except they don't. People don't hear you coming, they hear you going. And for what it's worth, based on what limited studies have been done on accident data, loud exhausts are typically OVER-REPRESENTED in wrecks. Now, correlation is not causation, but it probably does go to show that people putting these exhausts on are not super concerned with safety...
You know come to think of it, I've never seen a tuner/heavy modified car whenever I go back to Portugal. At least not in Lisboa or Algarve. I guess that's why. Are the police very aggressive there against loud cars?
@@EddieJorgeDrummer in Portugal all the modification are ilegal. There is just a couple of thing you can use "legal" but is very expensive... For exemple u can homologate tyres and wheels in some cars if you pay.... But 99% of the modification are ilegal and no possible to homologate... There is a big business in Portugal, because all the car parts from aftermarket you pay TAX(23%!!!!!!!!!!) and you cannot homologate them, so the cops are constantly watching for all the mods... Even a straight pipe. And the fact we are a small country, it's very easy to they meet you again on the road and they already know what you got on the car....of course there is a LOT modify cars in Portugal 90% civics and diesel ibizas. I usually hold onto random exhaust pipes until I can cheaply fab up a nice custom exhaust, it doesn't matter how good the welds look if they are under the car lol. Just resonator + big cannon glasspack muffler at the end, and it turns out really nice and I don't spend a lot either. I found some expensive mufflers and exhaust at local junk yards for pretty cheap: $200 magnaflow muffler and some extra pipe for $5.
In the all the exhaust work I've done, I think I've gotten maybe two bolts to turn without breaking. Also, love that you covered the back pressure thing. Tired of that misinformation being spread around
Depends on how restricted the stock one was, but many of the time. Not really. It will, cut weight depending on the material which helps along with the minor HP increase.
To have sure-fire gains from an exhaust system, you want to be looking at downpipes/catalytic converters, not the catback. Unfortunately most if not all performance catalytic converters are not C.A.R.B. compliant and decatting isn't street legal at all.
I have a friend who wants nothing to do with performance cars/trucks. He was saying nobody gets laid for reving their engine...thats what the outside world thinks of motor heads. Its not to get laid, its to get ourselves off without needing someone else! Lol!!
A couple of years ago I ported & polished the intake on my '88 IROC during an engine rebuild. The intake and exhaust valves were bumped up in size. I then upgraded to a Dyno Don set of headers and fully 3" back, including the cat. I finished it all off with a GMMG "muffler." After all the work did I notice a big difference in power? Not really, and I didn't expect miracles atop the starting 220HP-ish 305. But after driving it for 30+yrs, it was a new kind of fun. Oh, it's loud!
"Loud pipes save lives" may apply to some, but not all. Even with an exhaust, people still cut me off and pull out in front of me like I don't exist. At least my car sounds cool, tho. 🤷
rev your motor at them when it starts happening, stops people from merging every time lmao. the horn on my subaru doesnt do shit, but ever since i put on a muffler delete i can easily get their attention.
Loud pipes on my Harley didn't keep the person from texting and driving cutting me off and putting me and my passenger in the hospital. Stay off your phone and pay attention!
What's your car? Maybe it's not as loud as you think, but what do I know? My old Z3 has no horn, but it also has no muffler. If I need to "honk", I press the clutch and rev to 6k rpm. A straight six revving to the moon works way better than any stock car horn. 😂

Hey Zack, just wanted to say thank you for creating this series, you gave me the confidence to start building my first project car (and first ever car also), thank you for the tutorials, the car in question is a Nissan sunny b13, and I love it :3
That's what I like to hear!!

i think it's nice having a series like this, where the science behind why we do the mods and what we want from them is explained so well. It's great. :D
Since I’m just getting into cars, Zach has been amazing at explaining to new people like me. Love the money pit episodes!
"its just a 100hp car, we dont need to scream about it..."
Could not be more true.
And you just insulted pretty much the entire honda community
*Cries in 30 horspower tractor with a darn veteran van engine.*
@Richard Ward vtec powaa baby
Damn and I just had to buy a 1st gen odyssey

Love how people who don’t live with salt think that stainless doesn’t rust or corrode 😂
Stainless steel does not rust or react with salt. The problem is, that it's never stainless steel - it's rust resistant steel. True stainless steel costs A LOT!
@@MrJObajobas there's different compositions with more or less corrosion resistance.
@@MrJObajobas What specific steels do you think are rust proof? The only rust proof steel I know of is H1 which contains no carbon, it is a precipitation hardened steel that contains nitrogen instead of carbon and does not rust chemically. It is not in any exhaust system out there.
@@Eric-zs6rd Which is kinda funny, because without carbon it's not really steel. It's another alloy of iron that should be referred to differently.
The other thing to consider is that heat makes the metals more reactive. So even though 9/10 times stainless is corrosion resistant to brine, on a hot exhaust the corrosion resistance can be completely negated.
When the exhaust costs the same as the price he bought the car

Good choice with Magnaflow. I always liked how refined Magnaflow sounds and gives a more "natural" exhaust tone.
Wot is a 'more natural' exhaust tone? I cant quite picture it
I feel like this series is just a way for him to justify modifying the mx5. XD

@@ayyblyat9450 my grandma bought a Maxima new in 2001. It has been garaged its entire life and only has 46 thousand miles on it. But because she lives in Erie, PA it's a total rust bucket. The rockers are gone and it needs a new gas tank. It's a damn tragedy because they're great cars other than the rust!

Florida and CA cars are nice to work on. Sometimes even the exhaust hardware doesnt get much rust. The benefit of not having salted roads lol.
This series is good. Quality production value, entertaining topics, Zach is nice. Winning combination.
That hose velocity thing reminded me of a topic in my physics class. What was it again? Bernoulli's principle?

Zach: loud pipes save lives
Portugal cops: that’s nice, hold this ticket 250€ plus car inspection especial 200€ 😭😭😭😭
@@GoRideChannel
You must be a lot of fun at parties ... 😁🙄it's just a joke 👍👍
I'll recommend you to watch Yuri Francês channel on TH-cam. There is a lot good projects here (civic 1500hp from RPMMOTORSPORT) but... Is impossible to use as dayli.

I am learning a lot, Thank you for making this series, is one of the best on internet since you are showing that it is possible to have a project car

In the all the exhaust work I've done, I think I've gotten maybe two bolts to turn without breaking. Also, love that you covered the back pressure thing. Tired of that misinformation being spread around
Donut Media: Explaining to us how to change Exhaust.
His 12 year old neighbor: Mom the crazy man is talking to the Camera agin!
Depends on how restricted the stock one was, but many of the time. Not really. It will, cut weight depending on the material which helps along with the minor HP increase.
In theory but if an exhaust swap is all someone does I doubt they'll notice an increase from either the hp increase or the weight decrease
less weight = *mo powa baby*

9:30 I remember my first time using a mallet. It looked a lot like that
It’s hilarious I just bought a cold air intake when you posted the intake video and then got my exhaust done yesterday lmao
This time you weren't late to the party XDDD
You really can get along with him bro lol. Next, forced induction i guess. Mo powa bebeh!
Has to be loud enough to overpower their radio......
Thing is exhausts are directional. People behind you will hear you but people in front of you will still cut you off.
I’m looking to add an exhaust and BOV to my new c300 . This video has pushed me to just go for it. I was a little on edge about doing this, but now I’m all about it. This is my first 4 cylinder build.
