Bloodwork on Carnivore: What's happened to my kidneys?!

  • How's my bloodwork after 4 months on carnivore. I ordered some very specific tests in order to see how this carnivore experiment would impact my kidney function (eGFR & Cystatin C), my blood glucose levels, HBA1C (diabetes prevention) and I tried to get my Vitamin C level tested too. I do have other full panels of labwork I've had done, and I've also done a very comprehensive G.I. test (while on carnivore) and will do videos sharing these results coming up.
Thank you so much for watching - Holly.

Medical professional here... Great video, I've been telling my patients who get a Lower GFR because of high creatinine, to get a Cystatin-C and test then recalculate their GFR.
Creatinine has many many variables that affect it, meat consumption, creatinine supplements, a lot of muscle or lean body mass, or chronic exerciser who has a lot of muscle/protein breakdown in the blood. The average bodybuilder has a creatinine of 1.3-1.8 with perfectly functioning kidneys.
Cystatin test is not only an earlier indicator of kidney dysfunction, but it's also an early indicator of type 2 diabetes and CAD, coronary artery disease. So why not get the more accurate test for kidney function that also shows the state of your glucose metabolism and arterial plaque situation.
I am a bodybuilder and my creatinine stays around 1.4-1.7, giving me a gfr in the low 50s. My doctor wouldn't listen, so I went to the little walk in lab and ran my cystatin c.
    It came back at
    .66 giving me a gfr of 97.💪
I am also on the carnivore diet and it's healed almost all of my nagging ailments from eczema to joint and bone pain.
    Great video.... Keep em coming.

Thank you so much for sharing this - it helps to get feedback and advice from someone in the medical field. I will continue to spread the word about Cystatin C. Even when my GFR was in the 50s/low 50s for years and I got concerned, then chatted with my doctor about it - she never recommended anything to me. She just said it was due to aging. She never said anything about different variables impacting the results & she never offered the Cystatin C test. Thanks again for your comment and I am so happy to hear you've had so much healing from your diet!

I’ve been doing carnivore since july 2023 I’m an active 36yr old male. I just got blood work done for the first time in my adult life (May 2024) everything was great except cholesterol which I’m not worried about, but my kidney numbers (creatinine, eGFR, and bun/creat ratio) are out of range on the high side. I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or bad because my dr hasn’t called me to discuss the results. I wonder if he’ll talk to me about those numbers? Glad I learned about the cystatin test! I might order one myself just because I’m curious now. Thanks to both of you!

How refreshing to hear this. I, like you, have been given dire warnings from doctors and cardiologists about kidney function, high cholesterol and blood sugar. I started a modified keto/carnivore diet several months ago and all my blood markers have improved. These same doctors told me that diet and nutrition improvements were useless and that the only way to save my life was through pills and pokes. After much research and following blood test trends, I have totally lost confidence in these so called medical professionals.

    • @LifeDIY

Your comment is refreshing too! I am so happy to hear that you followed your gut :) and you can tell what's working for you when you're feeling better than you used to and then it's just a great confirmation to see such an improvement with the labwork. I love it! I think low carb/keto/carnivore can help so much - not just with your health but with becoming more aware of eating habits too. Unfortunately many doctors just turn to prescriptions without talking about diet at all. It's kind of shocking. I too have lost all confidence in medical professionals, though I am very grateful if I find a good one. I have actually found an amazing functional medicine doctor, though it's very hard to get in to see her. It's such a relief to have the right kind of doctor who does take all of these things into consideration. :)

The potential issue with carnivore is that the only 100% carnivores ever ate more or less 100% of the animals they killed. Basically everything except for the contents of the digestive track.

That's good that it worked for you. It worked for me,too... Until it didn't. Then my blood pressure and cholesterol skyrocketed, my type 2 diabetes worsened (insulin resistance), I was tired, nauseous, constant gastric issues, heartburn, difficulty concentrating, I went plant-based and everything improved. Still improving.

    • @albundyrocks2115
      @albundyrocks2115 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

That doesn't at all sound like the result of being on a carnivore diet. First of all there is no glucose or fructose in meat so that could not possibly be the cause of your diabetes or insulin resistance. Carnivore actually improves both conditions because of the elimination of carbs and sugar. Gastric issues were not e result either as meat is not inflammatory. Either you never went on a true carnivore diet or you're just a troll. Eat your veggies if you want to - it's your choice but don't spread lies about something you know nothing about.@@tarabooartarmy3654

Hi. Your history sounds very similar to mine. Here in the U.K., I was told that I had stage 3 kidney disease and that eGFR never recovers. They said that once the kidney loses some filtration function, you can, at best, only maintain that current level and stop it from getting any worse... which is total rubbish :) After 4 months on carnivore, my eGFR is now only just above normal range and I formally have no kidney disease.
Sadly, I believe that the medical profession is wrong on this (as we have both proved), just like they are on total LDL, fibre, vitamin d levels (they recommend 100 IUs per day and say 1000 IUs is toxic. I have great vitamin D levels after 2 years of taking 8000 IUs everyday). I was also diagnosed with retinopathy that magically disappeared after I went no-carb.
Congratulations on your results and improving health!

It depends if your kidney disease was an acute incident or chronic, what if the tiny tubules were damaged due to yrs of hypertension and/or diabetes? The going on to a Carnivore diet would I assume tax those damaged kidneys via high protein, PRAL, AGE's, Ammonia etc etc

The medical profession is really good at things like setting bones but the human body is so complex, they don’t understand chronic conditions. They don’t even know why blood pressure changes without any external stimuli. That’s when they start throwing meds at you. It ensures continual three month check ups and lots of labs. If your concerned with kidneys or anything...just fast 24-48 hrs to reset everything. Do this every 7 to 10 days. It also resets your pallet so food tastes much better. If your diabetic get a cgm and then start experimenting on how long you can fast. People are so worried about low blood sugar that they keep eating carbs even though they may not need all the carbs. My mom's T2D and will say she must eat carbs even though her energy is great and focus is great - she's absolutely paranoid of low blood sugar. I told her she'll continue guessing until she gets a cgm.

This is excellent advice! And, for me I wouldn't be worried about low blood sugar until it happens (as it is super rare). I did have an issue with it a year ago though from taking Berberine while eating so low carb. I think carbs are just addictive & cause blood sugar swings. I feel so much better with less of them in my diet and my blood sugar feels really stable.

I’m mid 40s and was damaged by a Floroquinolone antibiotic as a teenager-been struggling ever since, so I can relate in some ways to your struggles.

    My A1C was 4.9 also.
I was doing keto back then with lots of broccoli and cauliflower, eggs, huge salads, and sour cream, oh and some keto treats that probably had too many carbs, as I was doing net carbs back then. 🤪
I’m now carnivore and will be doing more bloodwork eventually! I’m started to see some small changes and am so excited about healing! I’m specifically doing high fat for that.

With the bloodwork, you're right about the predicament because I wish I could go back there again to get more bloodwork in the future, as it's the closest place for me. But, no offense to this very nice lady, but I would not want her to do my bloodwork again!
I'm sorry to hear about the damage from the antibiotic - that's terrible. Antibiotics are no joke. They can have such a big impact and I feel like doctors don't explain the potential problems or side effects - I feel like they're given out to casually and too often. I am sure they can be very useful when absolutely necessary, when used rarely.
I am so happy to hear that your eGFR was 110 - that's is amazing! Your A1C is also incredible. I hope your experience with carnivore goes well! It has taught me a lot about little things that I would have never noticed before - about my habits, how food impacts me, etc. I'm so happy you're starting to see small changes! 🙏

Excellent video! I had a patient come to me after his doctor diagnosed him with kidney failure because his eGFR was in the 40s. He was 68 years of age but exercised lifting weights on a daily basis. I ordered the Cystatin test and it came back perfect. A lot of conventional medicine physicians are really a bit lost when it comes to this. IF YOU EXERCISE lifting weights, your eGFR can go down and even your ALT liver enzyme can increase.
Also, I recommend that anyone following a carnivore diet to do an OxLDL and MPO test to check for oxidation. You can have elevated cholesterol, but if that cholesterol is oxidized in the presence of inflammation, then you got problems! Keep in mind that cooked meat is highly oxidized and while carnivore is good on one hand when it comes to diabetes or losing weight, the last thing you want is to end up with cardiovascular issues or even cancer. One thing that is super potent when it comes to combating the oxidation is taking 12mg of Astaxanthin on a daily basis. A lot to this for sure.
A lot of people think that carbs are a problem. Sure, sugars, breads, pastas, and even white potato can be bad, especially if you combine those foods with fatty foods OR the sugary food contains a lot of fat. The key is to eat a well balanced diet that contains a large variety of foods and eat those foods that YOU are not sensitive to. Use a continuous glucose monitor to see how your body responds to certain foods. If you exercise, you can get away with eating more white starches. If you are a couch potato, then not so much. We are all different! YOU have to do YOU because what works for you may not work for someone else. Again, eliminate foods that cause problems for YOU! Making drastic changes or eliminating good quality vegetables and fruits may work short term, BUT you need a variety of foods if you expect to build and maintain a vast gut microbiome. Too much to go into here, but remember this. We are all different!
BTW, I am a functional medicine practitioner - been involved with healthcare for the last 29 years and have trained in integrative and sports medicine for the last decade. Great video, and glad you did your own research as I hear stories like this all the time. I about fell out of my chair when you said your physician stated an eGFR in the 50s was a normal part of aging and you were in your late 30's at the time. I would have filed an official complaint against her.

Thank you for sharing this! I will look into the test you mentioned and if I get bloodwork again coming up, maybe I can add that. This is so helpful and I love the balanced approach too. I think too many people online form these groups and are too judgemental when others are not eating exactly the same. I have noticed by watching a lot of videos and listening to stories, that many people have deeper issues with addictive behaviors. So, from what I've seen, some of these people tend to do extremely well with being strict carnivore - many of them will say that they can't eat other things in moderation. I am grateful I don't have that and I am also grateful I can eat other things and my body switches back into ketosis pretty fast. Have you seen this type of thing with your clients?
I will do another one in the somewhat near future to talk about incorporating foods back in - and having a diverse microbiome. I did have really comprehensive GI testing done while on carnivore, and the results were great overall (no more SIBO, no parasites), but I could have a more diverse microbiome, like you mentioned. I personally can't tolerate many vegetables. I think I can tolerate the high starch ones (though I haven't had any in years so that may have changed), but I avoid those because I don't like the blood sugar effects or health effects and don't see any benefit. I have been trying to incorporate some things in and finding it difficult, though I can tolerate certain little things. I love fermented foods so I have been trying to add in a super small amount of sauerkraut when eating meat, as I am trying to improve my stomach and I think that could be helpful. So I am a work in progress. I can also have fruit without an issue if I wanted to. What I like about this experiment I've done is that it's made me extremely aware of my habits, which I previously thought I understood. It's also surprised me that I am sensitive to a lot of things, but never made the connection before with some of them.
Thank you for your advice on that doctor. I just don't have options for a VA doc right now and she is the best one. :) Thankfully I don't really need to see her for anything nowadays, other than their standard checkups.

@@LifeDIY What I've learned in life is that we can't please everyone regardless of what we do and how hard we try. We as humans all have our own opinions of something and if someone doesn't believe the way we do, we get bashed for it. Everything from religion, politics, and of course the human body. My diet is better than your diet, or my exercise program is better than yours. Fact is, ALL OF US are wrong IF we try to push OUR own beliefs on someone else. Why? Because people need to do what makes them HAPPY and what works for them. We are all different. We can give advice based on our own experiences, training, education, experimentation, etc.. However, in the end, our advice may hurt the individual we are truly trying to help IF we think of it as a one size fits all protocol.
Okay, so what do we do. Well, I personally like to start by checking gut function. Gut is number 1 in my professional opinion. If you have a gut issue, then that by itself leads to a host of health issues. Underlying infections is another one. H-Pylori, HSV or EBV are some infections that can cause many health issues. Fungal infections, parasites, and the list goes on. If someone has an underlying infection, the body responds by increasing histamine. People come to me with severe allergies, hives, food sensitivities, etc., and the problem is not allergies. The root is an underlying fungal infection. Clear the fungal infection and the histamine returns to normal and allergies are gone! That is just one example.
So, my advice to anyone is to do testing to make sure they have a normal functioning gut and to test for any underlying low grade infections. If your gut integrity is compromised, your immune function will be compromised as well. Why? Because 70% of your immunity is right there in your gut and how is your body to fight off rogue cells (cancer) with only 30% immunity. Fix the gut and any underlying infections and then allow the body to heal itself.
I like a vast gut microbiome because it allows people to eat just about anything in moderation without causing problems, and it doesn't put restrictions on them. If you restrict someone's diet, the odds of that person sticking with that diet is not good long term. We need to think long term. I've had people on carnivore for a couple of years decide one day to splurge by eating cake at a birthday party and practically go into a diabetic coma even though their A1c was in the 4's with a fasting glucose of 65. Why is that? Why on earth would their blood sugars hit nearly 300 after splurging on ice cream and cake? Microbiome! Your microbiome changes based on what you eat. If you make ANY change in your diet, this is why you MUST make subtle changes. Take it slow and allow at least 2 weeks for your microbiome to catch up so to speak. This goes for exercise as well. If you are a couch potato and then decide to start running 5 miles per day, then you are putting your body under stress. Stress is good, but not giving your body enough time to adjust to stress will lead to fight or flight which results in anxiety, sleepless nights, GUT issues due to the wrong stress response, and the list goes on and on. ANY change must be done gradually until your body adapts. Once the body adapts, then you progress on.
If the gut is well, then you have to look at heavy metals and other toxins. Then of course we look at diet, exercise, sleep patterns, stress, hormones, and other organ health starting with the liver. The treatment protocol will be different for everyone based on whatever is causing the problem. Thing is, most conventional medicine physicians never order the right testing. They order a CBC/CMP and they might look at TSH and Free T4, along with a cholesterol panel and that's it. Thing is, the human body is much more complex than that and nothing really shows up on basic blood testing until the health issue reaches an advanced stage. I can spot anemia in a CBC before most physicians can spot it. Why, because I don't look at just the reference range. I look to see what is OPTIMAL and then make suggestions and offer treatment so that we reverse something that could have been bad later down the road. The key is prevention because once a disease has already been discovered in advanced stages, it is much more difficult to treat and reverse.
Sorry for the rambling - I type 100wmp so I can get carried away. Looks like you are doing well and it's always nice to chat with you! Take care and keep up the good work!

Totally agree about painkillers and kidneys. Had a friend who had very low kidney function due to always taking them. As far as supplements go.. I do not think (of course would depend what exactly you take) that they negatively influence kidneys. I have bene a supplement junkie for yearssss and actually decades, I am well into my Forties now and my egfr on my last test was 118 and Cystatin 0,5. So my kidneys are in perfect condition despite all of the supps. I do eat everything but I stay away from any type of pharmaceutical meds. It´s great to hear you had such an improvement yourself simply by changing the diet. I´m sure that gives hope to a lot of people.

Thanks for sharing this. I agree! I should have clarified a little more about the supplements. I don't think most supplements would cause kidney damage, though anything is possible. I think that for me personally, they just have a transient impact my eGFR results if taken the day of the test or the day before. But, I don't think they're causing any damage for me - just messing up this test. :)

Hey Cheryl, I am so happy to see your comment here - thank you! It's been such an interesting experiment of sorts for me in doing this. It really changes your perspective and I feel like it puts you extremely in tune with your body. I don't find it to be difficult either, except when adapting and going through certain things with that. I know you follow Bryan Johnson and what is really fascinating to me is that he has the opposite approach - he does not want to listen to his body, he wants to override that. I prefer the opposite approach but I still find it very fascinating. It would be interesting to chat with him again sometime or even do a video with him on that topic, if I had the guts to do that! :)
Cheryl, your A1C sounds so good! I am so curious about what the proper or ideal range is, or what is the lowest number you can get for that (that's considered healthy)? Maybe there are better tests out there instead of A1C...I am thinking there probably are. I had an extremely comprehensive cholesterol panel that included very detailed insulin-related testing (I'll have to do a video on this later) and it showed that I have absolutely zero issues there and the results were excellent. I'll have to look into this more. Let's definitely catch up sometime! 🙏🤗

If you lift weights, you will have a higher creatinine level from muscle breakdown and so you can be wrongly diagnosed with CKD. Many people take creatine mono hydrate as a supplement. This can also give an incorrect eGFR. Unfortunately, many doctors are oblivious to these and other issues with the eGFR measurement and blithely diagnose CKD when the person is completely healthy. Some people have done considerable time on dialysis, only to be told after possibly a year, that they no longer had to be on dialysis and in fact, they never needed it in the first place. Be wary of well meaning doctors.

  • @playinem121
    @playinem121 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The thing about CKD is that GFR is an incomplete evaluation. If you are dropping protein (proteinuria) then a carnivore duet may not be advised. The VLPD (Very Low Protein Diet) might be sonething to look into if your kidneys are spilling protein into your urine. CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) is often asymptomatic so you may not even be aware that you are suffering from it or exactly how serious it is. One relatively simple way to tell if you are dropping significant amounts of protein is if your urine regularly seems bubbly or foamy. This is often indicative of excessive protein in the urine.

Yes, you should work with your doctor to figure out what is best for you and if you have a medical condition, you should get help. I think for many people, eating low carb can be a wonderful thing. Many people who are eating Keto or Carnivore are more focused on fat than protein. In this video my goal is to share my test results, not promote anything in particular.

Glad the results are good. I noticed back when I was 42 and vegan my total T was around 575 ng/dl and last time I checked doing carnivore at age 50 my total T was around 1100 ng/dl. So it basically doubled from the carnivore diet.
Also, I don't normally drink, but there was a time when I was getting on a kick of trying to be a bourbon person and after a few months of that I got a blood test and my triglycerides basically tripled. So alcohol basically makes a persons triglycerides go up. So I went back to my non drinking lifestyle which I had all my life, and moved my hobby of testing bourbons to trying out different fragrances, lol which is only hard on the pocket book but doesn't effect blood levels 🙂
I never had a person take blood that incompetent. I found the best person I went to was Quest Diagnostics. Not sure if your place was different but you can tell when they are good or not.
Glad that person didn't cause any damage to you.

It has nothing to do with the carnivore diet. Statistically, vegans have slightly higher T levels than omnivoires and I've seen several carnivores who had pretty low T. It depends what you ate on that vegan diet, but also physical activity, exposure to hormone and other factors.

My research said macroytic anemia and he doesn't drink. I read b12 deficiency and he takes b12 so I changed the form. When we got back from our winter away I called and asked if we could retest and test b12. He had to see the intern because the gp was out. This time b12 was super high. He said nothing is that far out so he is fine. He has symptoms, memory problems and falls down in the morning and the only follow up is a sleep test. I've read that just having a steak the night before your kidney test will throw it off and also being dehydrated. I also had a bad kidney test reading and I think it was because I ate a steak and took some ibuprofin the night before and it was a hot summer so I was probably not fully hydrated. The follow up test I took a month later was much better so I'm not worried but lesson I've taken is - don't take ibuprofin and stay hydrated - drink water (not just coffee) in the morning!

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes!!! I used to think that eating a lot of meat prior to the test would mess it up too, but I haven't had that experience with this last test. I think a lot of people will get worse numbers like you did due to dehydration (plus the ibuprofen). For me it's hard to drink a lot of water when fasting for a long time prior to bloodwork, sometimes it makes me feel a bit nauseous. But, it's important for the test! I think ibuprofen can have a big impact on your test results too. That's great you got a followup test and things were better. :) The crazy thing here is that the doctors I've spoken to have never acknowledged or thought about this and just brushed it off when I shared my experience with those things. If I was a doctor and had a patient with poor kidney function results, yet they otherwise appeared healthy with great bloodwork on other tests, I'd be asking a lot of questions and taking a lot of notes to figure out what could have impacted the test results, to see if the results were legit. I'd keep note of that for future patients and I'd order them the cystatin C test too. It's a shame that most doctors I know of would never think of doing anything like this.

Also heard Dr. Donald Layman in an interview with Dr. Gabriella Lyon saying he opts for carbs since, at his age, converting 100g of Protein to Glucose will be difficult within a given time window. He also mentioned that the GNG rate can be low, medium or high depending on the individual.
