Great info. Last year I developed sores on my legs and swelling so I started on Furosemide to take fluid from my legs. That is the only thing I did differently the whole year. This years physical showed Creatinine at 279. I was in stage 3 kidney failure. Looking back I was getting a sicker feeling but knew I had a physical coming up. I then collapsed at home and went to ER and was in hospital and rehab for 45 days. I had stopped all meds and my Creatinine went to normal after fluids, antibiotics, etc after a month or so. I couldn't walk before due to osteoarthritis and use canes or walkers. But just got weaker. And used Aleve for years with blood test results great. ..until Ferosemide. I have vascular clogging and have had 4 stents put in my abdomen area. And years ago I used Ibuprofen for pain and both kidneys started hurting. Quit that med and kidneys went back to normal. Tried Ibuprfen again several years later and both kidneys hurt again. Aleve never made my kidneys hurt. I do Tylenol now and occasional Aleve. On blood thinner for stents and cholesterol med. I think this whole thing started when hip went out and I got no exercise to help pump blood up. Didn't get a hip replacement waiting for dog to die as I live alone and have no family. I learned a bunch from your nephrologist so far. I had tons of blood work done to check kidneys and it has been good. I never smoked and don't drink. He said you don't notice kidney failure at first. So true. I'm at home and doing good. I still take an occasional Lasix and Potassium. Thanks for your shows. I always learn something. Blessings
I’m 75 and so pleased that my last two labs showed my GFR at 85 and then 90. I take really good care of myself. Exercise, great diet, don’t drink, never smoked, have low to normal BP, and normal low weight. Unfortunately my husband hasn’t seen a doctor for lab work in over 18 years. I have known that I have PKD since the age of 30 (my maternal grandfather was on dialysis before he died and my uncle had a transplant when he was 70). I am now 58 years old and under the care of my primary care physician along with a nephrologist. I exercise regularly, drink lots of water, eat a healthy balanced diet and do my best to manage stress. Last year at this time I was prescribed Tolvaptan. To this point it seems to have slowed the progression of the disease as my GFR has stabilized along with my Creatinine levels. Hope this is helpful.
Wow! This video has connected all the dots. My sister has lived with low kidney function for most of her life after she had one removed. I thank you for this valuable information!
Love these podcasts. In British Columbia regular check ups are no longer encouraged. I was diagnosed with a benign tumour on my pituitary gland 32 years ago. I take medication to keep the tumour small. When I was diagnosed I asked my doctor if he could give me a year’s supply of medication so I did not need to come and visit him every 3 months for a renewal. He agreed if I would come in for a physical exam every year. My doctor retired and I have a new doctor. This year he told me that regular check ups are no longer done. I asked how health problems would be caught. He said that people would come in with symptoms of diseases. My friend had cancer of a kidney caught by his GP when he had his regular physical. He had no symptoms. It was caught because the doctor palpitated his stomach. Something my doctor no longer does during a physical exam. My endocrinologist told me I had to have a blood test once a year to check that my tumour was not growing. I hope they will allow this to continue. We will find out next year.
I really appreciate these “kidney oriented” videos, as I do have kidney disease. In fact, I just had a visit to my nephrologist last week. Both he and your guest have really helped me understand where I am with mine. In retrospect, I wish that my primary docs in the past had been more specific about what I could have done to prevent it, but perhaps they didn’t realize that what I was doing, primarily long term nsaid use for chronic back and joint pain management, was so adversely affecting my kidneys. At this point, I’m in the “let’s don’t let it progress further” modality, and so far, over the last year, that seems to be working. Anyway, thanks for all your videos. I regularly recommend them to my friends and acquaintances, because I think they’re really helpful. Unfortunately, not all “Internet docs” are as helpful-and some of the comments to your videos are really unhelpful too! But that’s the way of the world these days, I guess.
I got my from 48 to 66🙏🏼 it all starts by eating healthy avoid salt sugar...drink planty of water...i use to eat lots of junk food i stopped all of that now i exercise take good care of myself
Celtic and pink. Himalayan salt have around 85 minerals in it.If you add it to your water it helps the water get into your cells. Take only small amounts thogh😊
I learnt more from this regarding my kidneys and 10 years of 3 monthly creatinine testing, than from any other medical source I've had dealings with in that time, including my online research. Very clear, informative and helpful. Thank you. I'll have cogent questions to ask when I see my doctor next month. Politely of course. 😏
Hi Doctors! And special thanks to the Nephrologist in this video! 😊I have had CKD stage 3A and have been basically stable for 9 years following a whole food, plant based diet. This is the best explanation I have heard about the link of cardiovascular disease & CKD. You have inspired me to up my cardio. Thank you! I just subscribed to your channel tonight! I appreciate you taking your valuable time to so freely share your education, knowledge & expertise. To all my fellow kidney warriors- listen to their great advice 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏼
@@TalkingWithDocs think of the opportunity to help young people and drill into at a young age that what they put into their health counts. Not to mention the long term cost savings in medical care.
Friday, October 18, 2024, 9:46 AM Awesome presentation on kidneys I viewed today. Your YT channel is a wealth of great health info. I appreciate you two docs taking time to makes these videos.
Very informative. Thank you again to you and your guests - I firmly believe that mostly “we are in charge of our own health” and your videos enable us to make correct life style choices. And they usually add an extra laugh or two to my day 😊
Love it when you explain the test results like that. I get misc tests as I get older and never get told what they mean, just to accept the works its not or is of concern.
A good way to prevent back pressure on the kidneys is to Go Pee...every 2 hrs...inconvenient yes, but sooooo important...!!!! Huge thx to the good dr.'s...!🙏❤
It's a bummer we have three doctors one being a nephrologist and when asked about possible symptoms or signs said nothing about foaming urine. Also he speaks of GFR skipping the actual acronym EGFR with the E standing for "estimated" based on a formula utilizing Creatinine. The problem is that there are many ways one can have elevated Creatinine without any kidney problems, such as high protein diet, creatine supplementation, and having lots of muscle mass. I had a egfr of 57 on high protein diet. Lowered my protein for 4 weeks and retested at 84. There is another test better suited to this scenario " Cystatin-C test which also produces an EGFR but doesn't use Creatinine for the calculation.
I luv this channel Talking With Docs.. Thanks Dr. Zalzal and Dr. Brad Weening for, so many posts. I will keep being a fan for many videos to come. Keep posting!
Yet anytime I complain of a pain anywhere my Doc gives me a prescription of 800 mg of Ibuprofen. And, to be honest sometimes that’s the only thing that helps my back pain. 😢
@@ksharpe8137 Try not eating any sugar/carbs and processed foods for 30 days. Keto would be the least you should try for. My back pain is gone and my younger brother's back pain is also gone. His was worse than mine and had 3 back surgeries from the lumbar to his neck requiring fusing of 7 vertebrae. He also lost 90#s and is now at his high school weight at the age of 70.
We lost my cousin to renal cancer this past summer. He was one of those classic guys who never went to the doctor, but he lived a very healthy lifestyle. Didn't drink or smoke. Exercised regularly. Ate healthy. Never missed a day of work, until one day he was so tired that he couldn't go. His wife took him to emergency and was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Later that week, it was identified that it started in his kidneys. He was gone 2 weeks later. I was hoping to find out how it could've happened to such a healthy person and could his kids now have a high chance of getting it too?
My youngest brother had a symptom of urinating blood. His wife told him to go to the doctor. Of course, he wouldn't go. Finally, she said, "Go talk to your sister" (me). He did and I convinced him to go. Keywords that worked were our mother's advice and this was something that had to be checked out. As soon as I mentioned what our mother would say, he listened. Mother's words are powerful. It turned out that he had a blocked ureter and had surgery. He did have followup kidney treatment, but I don't know what he's doing now. That was years ago. At least he knows what to do if he needs to see the doctor again.
17:55 Thank you for the advice and in-depth talk concerning kidneys. Good to know. And thank you for this channel you all are brilliant and simplify what would otherwise be incomprehensible.
I got diagnosed with class 3 kidney disease, from my hi bp meds burning a hole in my kidney! My heart is in excellent condition. I have "hard to control hi blood pressure." I quit smoking, cut back on drinking, i go out maybe one night a month!
Great show Gents very appreciated I had my right kidney removed due to CCRC carcinoma- had severe pain for weeks in my stomach and right back All good after op 3years ago
I am in Ontario, and my current doctor doesn't like to do tests. I find I really have to push for any tests. I really miss my previous doctor (now retired). i think this is the way the new young upcoming doctors do stuff these days. I consider myself lucky because I at least have a doctor.
Most testing is useless and doesn’t add a day to life. If you look hard enough you will find something. Just live a healthy life with exercise, eating whole healthy foods, drinking lots of water, proper sleep, healthy weight, no meds and social interaction.
I landed in hospital because my doctor refused the urologist referral that was recommended by previous hospital stay and now I have blockage (calculi in right kidney)to big to pass naturally ,on waiting list for surgery.😢
Thank you! I really learned a lot that I need to know to share with my doctor. I didn't realize kidney function could be related to breathing problems. Recently suffered pain that could be from my left kidney or pancreas. I'm traveling and will soon be home for a necessary doctor visit.
I’ve had kidney stones all my life. My kidneys are full of fragments. I was diagnosed with nephrocalcinosis at an earlier ago. At 54, I was diagnosed with Hyperparathyroisism. I had a parathyroid surgery to remove all four parathyroid’s and implanting a portion into my right arm. It functioned but did not uptake in my bloodstream. Now diagnosed with Hypoparathyroidism. I have no ability to absorb calcium. My kidneys have suffered and I am at a 3b stage of chronic kidney disease. My endocrinologist said our goal is to stay stabilized so I have all bloodwork done every 3-6 months. I am still not seeing a nephrologist but have seen a urologist. Nothing new has been proposed but after many 24 hour urine tests they have always had protein. I take 5 medications for both HyPOparathyroid disease and Chronic kidney disease. I also have had low potassium consistently so always a worry. I try to keep low salt usage and don’t eat as much meat as I used to. Always trying to learn more about maintaining stable kidney function but worry that it’s declining slowly.
Excellent talk! Keep up the good videos. This should be required viewing by everyone. I like your take on taking charge of your own health, but to do so you need highly reliable info. Keep it up.
Hi docs, would you please make a video on liver disease or have a hepatologist discuss regression of disease? Prevention and treatment too. Thanks! Love watching you.
That would be so helpful for many to know, especially if fatty liver disease is present. I learned the hard way that fatty liver disease can progress silently to cirrhosis, especially if someone has diabetes, and it came as quite a shock when I was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver a couple of years ago. I am not a drinker of alcohol nor have I ever smoked or done drugs, but I learned that many prescription medications I’ve taken over the years, as well as not watching my diet closely enough, has brought this on. Cirrhosis, sadly, is irreversible. I so wish I had known when I was first diagnosed with fatty liver disease. My doctor didn’t know either, so I don’t blame them for not cautioning me. 💗
Got my egfr from 48 to 66. I stop eating junk food, i eat it now but cut back 95%..lost 30ibs i eat healthy now exercise more drink more water...you just got to take care yourself...my main problem was my high blood pressure and i use to use nsaid very often..
Perfect timing! My creatinine has been elevated last 2 tests, & gfr is low. Dr. felt it was due to dehydration but I drink at least a litre of water per day - not including herbal teas ( more like 2+ litres )but my Dr. told me to cut back. On BP & cholesterol meds, no diabetes, & have some of the other non- descript symptoms. Thank you for this info!
If you’re drinking only 1 L of water a day, you are 2 L short of what you should be drinking. Literally you should be drinking 3 L of water per day. That will be a game changer for you.
Is it normal for my eGFR to go up to G2 and down to G3b with how much fluids intake daily? And does a high BUN mean I’m probably dehydrated and not drinking enough fluids? What kidney value is the most important? The eGFR, creatinine, bun, protein, or the ratio? Guys, I like your show. More people need to be watching it ❣️🫀😁. Great info.
Another great detailed video, another measure I have been monitoring, I have eGFR going back 10 years and lifestyle change and meds keeping it from progressing.
I had protein in my urine at my last checkup. My Dr said it was probably due to my high protein low carb eating habits. Would that make sense to you Dr?
Yes, I had the same issue. I was eating over 300 grams of protein for a few months. I had high GFR and normal creatinine levels even tho I work out 5 days a week. The doctor told me to reduce my protein and retest in a few weeks.
@@TalkingWithDocs turns out it’s well documented. Also, creatine supplementation goes hand in hand with woe king out which increases creatinine. I quite creatine supplements prior to a blood test and eGFR creatinine and cystatin-c bath 86. Maybe it’s just me.
As an owner of a set of kidneys, I'm curious if an increase of water intake (in moderation), assists the filtration function of the kidneys? Thought being by diluting filtered components (like salts), does this assist the kidney in prevention of damage? Or if I'm not always hydrated, does the over concentration of the filter components cause short/long term issues?
I hoped they would mention importance of proper hydration as well. My father has been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease. And on a recent visit, I noticed that he drank absolutely ZERO water. Coffee in the morning & skim milk with his meals his only liquids. Plus, he lives 100% of the time in air conditioned environment. So he never sweats out any salts, which puts all that load on the kidneys vs skin. After 4 days of zero water intake, I mentioned this to him and he has since begun drinking water. I hope this helps him. I accompanied him to his nephrologist appointment, many GP appts too. They never mention water intake like here in the interview. Would appreciate them addressing this point, as I bet it is such a basic assumption they overlook it.
@@cartermiller2705 I had kidney stones ~25years ago, and upping my water intake flushed everything out over the next couple of years. Once I knew what passing a tiny kidney stone felt like, I feel them exit and recognized what was happening. Increasing my water intake solved this issue since then. I monitor daily water intake/exit and no noticeable stones have passed in 20ish years. Clean your filters, drink water! 🙂
The best program with important information about kidney! I like that you give tables with numbers what allow to check my own test results and understand them correctly Thank you very much for that! Please, continue!!
Unfortunately, the annual physical exams in the US nowadays has reached to a bare minimum of testing. I have to request to have regular blood panels, let alone kidney function or bone density.
Mine has been as low as 44 and high of 60. It generally hovers around 53 which puts me at stage 3 CKD. Most of my docs do not seem concerned and tend to blow it off at this stage. More likely to be concerned when it reaches Stage 4. My X was on dialysis so I know the importance of keeping it as healthy as possible.
Thanks for the suggestion. We have considered that. This seems to work for us for now and for the last 8 years but you never know. Appreciate you watching
Hey Docs, My Grandfather died from apparent "horseshoe" kidney. I had surgery for horseshoe kidney. My son at 19 months old had surgery for horseshoe kidney. How common is that condition? Did your guest think it was a genetic condition?
@@TalkingWithDocs I’m on my 3rd one in the past two months. The antibiotic prescribed for them apparently isn’t knocking it out, and the one the after hours clinic doctor prescribed today is in short supply: the pharmacy hasn’t been able to get any for several months. I had routine bloodwork done about a month ago and my doctor did not have any concerns about my numbers, except for HgA1C which has gone up. I guess I need to ask for another consultation. Is it likely the kidney function number and thus my kidney health could change this quickly? I have Type 2 diabetes.
I have RA, have been on methotrexate since 2008, and my creatinine levels have been closely monitored over the last two years by my rheumatologist, but nothing is done or recommended.
Properly informative with no flashy glam! Useful questions, too!
Thank you so much for this generous video!
Hugely informative. Having the kidney-cardio link explained will help a lot of people.
We thought so
Wow thanks!!
Brilliant great guest you should be played in every high school health class in Ontario
That sounds great to us! We can go on tour 😀

Such valuable advice. 🙏 Thank you 🙏 I had no idea ibuprofen adversely affects kidneys and blood pressure.
Sure can
I'm really worried after hearing about these symptoms. I hope everyone pays more attention to their health
Very informative. Thank you again to you and your guests - I firmly believe that mostly “we are in charge of our own health” and your videos enable us to make correct life style choices. And they usually add an extra laugh or two to my day 😊
Thank you so much....my mother was on Celbrex for years..later was told it was harming ...later passed from CKD..
Love it when you explain the test results like that. I get misc tests as I get older and never get told what they mean, just to accept the works its not or is of concern.
Thought it might help some people
@@TalkingWithDocsit does, it did. 👍🥴
Love these Dr's. You men explain things so well and get to the point.
Great Video, Again for most health issues... Don't Smoke, Exercise and be a Healthy Weight.
Worst things for Ur kidneys are alcohol, smoking high blood sugars high blood pressure and the worse is anti inflammatory medication 😡
The list is long
Well said!
@@TalkingWithDocsthat’s what….
Thank you for that outstanding overview of kidney disease!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks and cheers to Kingston Hospital.
Yay!
I lost a kidney from chronic infection. It put me in to stage 3 CKD. Sucks but numbers are stable so nephrologist and endocrinologist are happy.
Well done gentlemen. Extremely informative easy to follow . Encouraging knowing we can work toward positive outcomes. Thank you
My youngest brother had a symptom of urinating blood.
My mother used to say... Don't self diagnose...! So true...!
17:55 Thank you for the advice and in-depth talk concerning kidneys. Good to know. And thank you for this channel you all are brilliant and simplify what would otherwise be incomprehensible.
Doing our best !
I got diagnosed with class 3 kidney disease, from my hi bp meds burning a hole in my kidney! My heart is in excellent condition. I have "hard to control hi blood pressure." I quit smoking, cut back on drinking, i go out maybe one night a month!
Another great video from you guys.
Your dedication to your profession and the health of others is a gift to all of us.
A heartfelt thank you
Thank you!! Would you be able to talk about RA vs. Osteoarthritis? You guys are the best!
Lovely vid. I absorbed more info than a loop of Henli.
Very nice!
My doctor is young and upcoming and he arranges testing on a regular basis, in discussion with us, so …
@jotibarratt829 - Work on getting a new doctor!
Glad we could help 😀
This is very informative and helpful. Thank you! 🙌🏻

Thanks so much for the information. Would have been nice to hear some of the best common medications to help stop/reverse kidney problems.
Meds??
I have seen very common kidney issue with High Blood pressure patients. when people dont regulate their BP and later find out kidneys issue.
Excellent talk! Keep up the good videos. This should be required viewing by everyone. I like your take on taking charge of your own health, but to do so you need highly reliable info. Keep it up.
Doing our best. Thanks so much
Hi docs, would you please make a video on liver disease or have a hepatologist discuss regression of disease?
That’s awesome congrats !
You need more than that. More like 2 litres a day.
If you’re drinking only 1 L of water a day, you are 2 L short of what you should be drinking. Literally you should be drinking 3 L of water per day. That will be a game changer for you.
@@sassysandie2865 Dr. Berg says 3 to 4 L per day if you have any kidney stones or kidney issues.
I've always wondered if the recommendation for a baby asprin might be doing harm to the kidneys.
Excellent episode. Thank you for addressing the importance of kidney health.
This video helped me understand the symptoms better. I'm very grateful for the useful information!
Salt matters when there is consistently high blood sugar levels..Diabetes / Pre Diabetes.
BTW, you doctors are brilliant. Thank you for your video programming. So informative and helpful 👌
As an a-Fib patient this was very helpful, thanks !
I had protein in my urine at my last checkup. My Dr said it was probably due to my high protein low carb eating habits. Would that make sense to you Dr?
Yes this makes sense, I've been following a low carb diet and also see elevated proteins in urine. I think that's expected.
Yes, I had the same issue. I was eating over 300 grams of protein for a few months. I had high GFR and normal creatinine levels even tho I work out 5 days a week. The doctor told me to reduce my protein and retest in a few weeks.
I started taking creatine and my eGFR dropped from 86 to 46. I got an eGFR measured with cystatin-c and it was back at 86.
Interesting
@@TalkingWithDocs turns out it’s well documented. Also, creatine supplementation goes hand in hand with woe king out which increases creatinine. I quite creatine supplements prior to a blood test and eGFR creatinine and cystatin-c bath 86. Maybe it’s just me.
Thanks for this! So much info.
Glad it was helpful!

Great video with great explanations!
Thank you so much. Great info
You bet!

The best program with important information about kidney! I like that you give tables with numbers what allow to check my own test results and understand them correctly Thank you very much for that! Please, continue!!
Thank you Docs for keeping us informed. This really is so helpful and informative and keeps me aware about what we need to know! God bless you all!
For sure. Protect those kidneys
GRACIAS POR LA INFORMACION ❤😊
(This helped me understand kidneys better. The information about Ayurvedic treatment was very useful.)

Hey Docs, My Grandfather died from apparent "horseshoe" kidney. I had surgery for horseshoe kidney. My son at 19 months old had surgery for horseshoe kidney. How common is that condition? Did your guest think it was a genetic condition?
Excellent information as always. Thank you. Is there any connection between kidney disease and urinary tract infections?
Yes particularly if they are recurrent
@@TalkingWithDocs I’m on my 3rd one in the past two months. The antibiotic prescribed for them apparently isn’t knocking it out, and the one the after hours clinic doctor prescribed today is in short supply: the pharmacy hasn’t been able to get any for several months. I had routine bloodwork done about a month ago and my doctor did not have any concerns about my numbers, except for HgA1C which has gone up. I guess I need to ask for another consultation. Is it likely the kidney function number and thus my kidney health could change this quickly? I have Type 2 diabetes.
