His point is valid. Most Americans I know won't even use the cruise control in their car. When asked why, they say they "don't like it being in control". They are basically afraid of it! These people so poorly understand about how their vehicle works, they become a nuisance on the roads.
But they are not stupid. They will learn, and will buy an EV once they learn the benefits of owning one they can afford. And that comes down to the convenience factor and cost to operate. If someone can recharge their vehicle affordably overnight at home, they'll buy an EV when they can afford it. Otherwise, they'll just avoid the hassle of dealing with using charging stations.
I predict that Tesla will eventually get around to offering home charging installation as part of their sales efforts. And that will help every EV manufacturer that has the NACS port on the vehicles, or at least provide a free adapter.
EVs will displace ICE vehicles. It's just a matter of time. Don't forget that as more vehicles in daily use on the roads become EVs, the cost of gasoline is bound to increase due to declining sales volumes. That will contribute to, and likely accelerate, the adoption of EVs nationwide. $10 a gallon gas will definitely kill the ICE vehicle market in the USA. That's part of the reason Europeans are adopting EVs so quickly compared to Americans.

I worked, at one time, for Wells Fargo for some nine years and was inculcated into how banks think. Don't expect bank lending on cars to get any better when interest rates ease. They may want more money down. Here's why.
A big part of the lending problem is EVs. As Tesla lowers its car prices aggressively, the collaterol that banks have in the EV itself (i.e. what they can sell it for in a loan default) is continuously dropping. This is a major issue for banks that initiate loans on EVs in general.
However, the same people that are buying EVs right now are the preferred credit customers, i.e. the best loan risk. So banks cross their fingers and loan them money any way for this reason. However this means that the customers still buying ICE cars are, overall, being represented by higher and higher risk customers.
Now so far that higher risk pool has been lucky that used ICE car prices have stayed higher thus the collaterol in that car is more valuable and isn't going down as fast as EVs. BUT this will soon change as EVs approach and then become cheaper than ICE cars to purchase from the start.
When that happens the market will swing hard to EVs and that will have the effect of new ICE cars going down in price to try to remain competitive. This in turn will cause the used ICE cars to go precipitously down in value along with the added disadvantage of even dropping faster in the near future as EVs rapidly take over new car sales.
What does all this foretell? Banks are going to tighten up their lending even more on ALL cars as ALL will depreciate more than the risk banks are taking on.... both EV and ICE....at least until EV prices stabilize. The mail in the coffin will be once banks are convinced that EV prices are going below, and will stay below, comparable ICE cars.
At that point they will announce that they no longer will be offering loans on ICE cars or that those loans will be extremely expensive.
This will be the single largest driving factor in EV adoption.

I just leased my 4th Tesla. For 3 years. Buying cost 55895,-- Euros for 5 years and 20.000km per year for a grand total of 100K.
Sell back value ist fixed at 20.681,-- Euros The monthly rate is 650,-- Euros. All values as is usual in Europe incl. VAT.
This car has a todays value of around 35K after 5 years. The bank prices it with 20K.
My risk is that it will cost less than 20K in 5 years. In which case i have to pay at the end.
The banks risk is none, it is financing the vehicle. I can buy it back for 20K after 5 years and hopefully sell it for 35K.
Could you please tell me where they - or i - have made the error?

Historically and presumably now, some smart people buy very basic transportation and when it breaks down, just buy another. The extreme low price makes them disposable. But when used cars become scarce, the cash or payments price drives these buyers out. More current owners drive their cars into the ground. Fewer new car sales + fewer used car sales leads to an ICE car death spiral. With failing volumes, prices spike and then crash in a rush to cheaper-to-own EVs. Simple if inconvenient truth!

The inflation reduction act specifically says if you own a multi-family and your tenant ask for an EV charger you have to put one in... It goes by the number units and it goes down each year so it goes down to end up to a 2 family in a few years...

    • @RobertLoPinto

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) does not require multi-family owners to install EV chargers, but it does provide a tax credit for the equipment. The credit is 30% of the cost of the equipment and installation for businesses, up to $100,000 per charger. For home installations, the credit is 30% of the cost, up to $1,000. Far from all the cars will need charging at the same time, but all will want the opportunity to charge. Giving them that has a value and a cost, so how you do it may be a challenge. It is just a practical and economic question like building anything. But the technology exists. Difficult in winter with lowered range. Also, putting 35K/year (or more). That is to say, range is likely to degrade a little more, making trips a little more taxing (lowered range means needing more fill percentage which means longer sitting as topping off to a higher number is slower.) Extremely interesting interview. It excellent to see a perspective of reality from outside the Tesla bubble, and Brandon has a very insightful view of that larger world out there.
He's absolutely right that EV's are more polarising than we in the bubble realise, and a large portion of the car buying public is not going to even want to touch an EV (or even hear about them) without some focused education into that (large) segment of the population.
Much work to be done, but with people like Brandon informing and bridging the gap, it can happen.

Good point about the charging infrastructure. It will be a major issue for some years to come. In my city, Amsterdam, the people owning a garage is super super limited. But the percentage of electric cars is quite high. On most streets are charging poles. I mostly cross the centre with the canals and they are everywhere along the canal side. I live in a flat just outside the old centre and every street has charging places where cars charge overnight or for a few hours during day time. Even here it is not enough, but the ownership of electric cars is not limited to people owning their own driveway / garage at all. I hope it will be commonplace everywhere all over the world. Stores, offices, parking garages and streets. In countries like Norway and the Netherlands it is becoming sort of normal already.

I live in an apartment now. There is a free charger about a half a mile away at a town park I use. They have those all over in this city. For people on a low income, free chargers could mean a lot. Nobody uses these charges half the time. Think of the lines you'd see for a free gas station. Electricity is included with my rent but there's no real way to charge here. There are hundreds of units and I think I'm about the only EV. I also own a gas minivan. As a second car if you have a bigger car you use for long trips 100 miles of range would probably be enough.

After listening and reading the comments, I am stunned at how many people only consider sticker price/monthly car payments.
When you consider fuel and servicing costs, EV's are much cheaper to own than ICE.
Of course, US tariffs (actual and threatened) make cheaper overseas made vehicles far more expensive than they need to be, while Tesla is a premium brand and the equivalent ICE models from BMW, Mercedes etc are more expensive than Tesla.
My understanding is that in big cities such as NY, Ubers and cabs are going electric in a big way due to lower operating costs, so perhaps that will help the general public appreciate the benefits to them.
Charging will not be such an issue once cinemas, shopping malls, motels and parking stations offer EV charging as standard.

There's a lot of talk that other car companies joining the Tesla charging standard, and using the Tesla network, will solve most of the charge anxiety problems. I just see a lot longer wait times at Tesla chargers for everyone. The rest of the private charging companies just don't deliver at Tesla's level of quality of network. Tesla will have to build out at a much higher pace to meet demand. Maybe they will. The other big problem I see is the transmission grid/generation problem. Government and utilities will have to spend hundreds of billions to upgrade the grid, and generation, to meet the government's forced goals. That investment can't lag behind the forced demand. That spending needs to happen up front.

However if you buy an EV with 180,000 miles on it - what ever the battery's state is at that moment - eg: 20% degradation, it's not likely to suddenly fail, or degrade a bunch more out of the blue.

The trip charging issue is largely a myth. There are definitely places in the US that require thought to make sure that you have a charging within easy access but the same applies to gasoline, in some mid west locations. The same kind of myth applies to the charging times... The average stopping time for a family on a trip is 29 minutes, in that time you can charge a well design EC, such as a Tesla 3 or Y, from any low level to 85% or better.. You don't have to look for charging, the Tesla travel function lists all of the charging station and forecast if there are stalls available at the time you arrive. No one would claim that charging for non Tesla EC has been an issue, but this is a self inflected pain.

I know you refered to the Ämerican" culture and circumstances making this remark: "You can't bike 10 miles to work on a highway" (ca 22 min). But sure you can, you just can't on a highway, but if there is sufficient infrastructure (ie bike lanes and other roads) you can. I live in the Netherlands and in a former Job I used to bike 12 miles to and from work almost every workday. I did not have a car then and do not have a car now and I only had to take the bus to work on the few days that winds were above say 45-50 mph. Granted, even in the industrial area where I worked the bike lanes were and still are of excellent quality, and in the Netherlands, there is more of an expectation that people come to work or school on their bikes. I used to bike 9 miles to school every day because it was 10 min faster and cheaper than taking public transport. And so does a large part of Dutch high school students to this day.
The difference is part culture and part governmental willingness to put in a good and safe biking infrastructure.
