I've taken many road trips with gas cars, and the past 6 years as a Tesla owner has made the whole thing far easier. Of course you need to stop a bit more often, and for a bit longer. It's actually a pleasure. We stop in various small spots that we might otherwise miss, stretching the legs reduces fatigue substantially, and bathroom/coffee breaks are gonna happen anyway. Initially I had a little range anxiety but it fades quickly. Never had a single actual range issue.
Anyone who dismisses EVs because of this has probably never driven one on a long trip. It's just not a big deal. But the key part is that it's a moot point for 90+% of my travel.

Augusta GA to Tucson AZ round trip, Miami FL to Bar Harbor Maine and back to GA. Two adults, two children, and a weeks worth of luggage in the Model Y with FSD. It's honestly the best travel experience.

2:46 If my budget ever catches back up to my spending, I may buy FSD, but until that day, the base Autopilot+TACC, available in every Tesla is sufficient. As a tired retiree, I would not have considered making the three day 2000 mile drive out to San Diego, and certainly not the 33 hour 1600 mile drive back from Tucson, but for the assistance of TACC and Autopilot, which contributed mightily to the ease and safety of the trip.

John, thanks. We do longer trips by 1) charging to 100% at home the night before, and 2) staying overnight at places wuth free destination charging, again going to 100% there for a fresh start the next morning. Cuts costs and cuts out a Supercharger stop

I've driven to Seattle, San Francisco, Sabta Barbaram, LA, NY, CT, NH, VT in my Model 3 and my wife's Model S several times.. All from Northern NM. FSD is the very best. It makes it easy to drive long distances. FSD makes it easy. I like the charging stops. The S has 400 mile range. I've only worried about range once -- I pulled into a charging station with 5 miles on the gauge. The stops are energizing. I took the no fly pledge in 2018, and we're pretty much net zero for travel and heating. I pay attention to the navigator. Charging is faster if you don't got too low. I only spend 20 minutes on average at a charger. At lunch or dinner we might return to the S with 390 miles range.

I much prefer a road trip in my model Y as opposed to my CR-V. I've traveled from northern Utah to Galveston, TX and also to St. Louis Missouri on road trips. I travel from the Salt Lake City, UT area to the Long Beach, CA area at least 6 to 8 times per year. An 11 hour trip is increased by about 45 minutes for supercharging, but I always feel more rested after the trip because of the opportunity to walk around while charging and because the car does some of the driving. I've also figured out how to save about 15 minutes of charging on that drive form UT to CA now that they have added additional chargers on the I-15 corridor. I'll charge until I get to a predicted charge level of about 20% at the next charger instead of going to a charger farther away as recommended by the navigation system. This keeps my charging speed much higher since I rarely have to charge above 70% or 80%. I now have over 67,000 miles on my car. I'm been a driver for over 45 years and this is, by far, my favorite vehicle to drive.

Supercharging makes one get out of the car for a few minutes which helps you also recharge your brain and probably makes for safer driving. Better on the bladder and back as well.

Last September I made a 1500 km (~900 mi) trip through Germany over a week with my M3p.
    1. next to the Autobahn there are plenty of Superchargers and I *always* found a free slot. In the very rural areas you need a little planning.
    2. If it doesn't rain and you walk around your car and talk to the other drivers, you'll have a lot of nice Tesla talk :)
    3. On my first stint I drove (whenever it was possible) comfortable 170-190 km/h (~120 mph). Boy did this drag from the battery! So for the rest of the trip I switched on autopilot (FSD ist still not allowed in Germany/EU) at a 130 km/h.

Just completed a short round trip to NYC from Philly area. had two grandkids and my wife.
planned on a stop but changed my mind enroute. The software found a supercharger, and it FSD(ed) us right to it. It was at the Jersey Gardens Mall. So the kids and my wife hoped out. I backed into an open stall plugged in and everything you describe in the video happened for us too.
I even enjoyed the 6 minute walk from the charger to the food court cause I needed the exercise
This is gonna sound mean but the Queue of non teslas waiting for the other chargers, served to validate my choice to buy the Tesla - I drove a Kona and a Bolt before I picked the Model 3
both the above models could be seen in the non tesla line- which is where I would have been...

It's so true, I literally look forward to taking road trips in my Tesla. And people have to remember, you're not spending that extra 30 minutes twiddling your thumbs. You're sitting in a restaurant enjoying a meal instead of trying to gobble some junk down while you're driving.
My 'all day' template is almost exactly like yours. Drive 2.5-3 hours, recharge for 20 minutes, bathroom, drink, etc. Drive 2.5-3 hours, recharge for 30 minutes with a decent sit down lunch somewhere (I always get BBQ--real eastern NC BBQ!). Drive 2.5-3 hours and do another 20 minute charge, Drive 2.5 - 3 hours and arrive. That's 10 - 12 hours of driving with a total of 70 minutes of stops. And the car is quiet, smooth, drives itself, has a great sound system for a book or whatever, and you just cruise along enjoying life.

Last summer I drove from Oregon to Alabama in my Model 3 using FSD all the way. I took 4 days, around the same time it would have taken in a gas car. My main problem was that the charge stops weren't always long enough for both food and bathroom breaks. My longest stop took around 30 minutes to charge close to 100%. The distance between Superchargers can be long in the Midwest. Previous trips into California had shorter stops with a large choice of Supercharger stops.

ABRP ... A Better Route Planner allows users to specify arrival SOC state of charge ... I plan my trips with ABRP, then port the trip over to Google Maps and then to my Tesla navigation system ... the stops are all included ... if the mood strikes me, I'll modify the trip en route if something unexpected occurs, like a pretty site to side trip to for a few extra minutes or so ... or just to try out a new supercharger location ... or preplanning expected congestion etc. ...

Elon explained the charging speed slowing. He said that it's similar to a car park, when it's empty, it's easy to find a parking spot, but as the car park fills up, you have to drive around and around until you find a spot, it's the same with the battery with Lithium Ion's trying to find a parking space

On my 8 hour drive to disney about 500 miles, it takes me two stops 25 minutes a piece. In my gas car, it actually took me longer just because of the fatigue of having to drive long distance and needing to take a nap. Autopilot is a game changer for road trips.

Agreed with the review of the Tesla road trip experience. I love road trips in my Model Y.
One suggestion I would add to the trip planning is to allow a user selectable state of charge for arrival at destination. It always seems to plan on arriving with as low of a SOC as possible. If I'm going to a hotel/condo where that might not be convenient to charging, or where I want to be above 20% to allow sentry mode, it would be nice to be able to indicate that.

John, I think it's important to point out that the additional time to "fill up" with an EV on a road trip is offset by the time saved the rest of the year by not having to go to gas stations to fill up because you fill up at home. I've done the math. So, annually, a BEV saves time on the fill ups versus a gas car.

@@john9663 What people I know who live in apartments where they can't charge do, is to use the Tesla Superchargers, or charge at work. Workplaces have ramped up the ability for workers with EVs to charge. They are either installing chargers in their parking lots or simply installing outdoor electrical outlets, and some employers have no problem with an employee running an extension cord to their EV. They are making accommodations so they don't lose good employees for the lack of EV charging.

Youre inevitably going to sound whiny to ICE car drivers when you say driving the car would suck on a roadtrip but the relaxation of FSD on a roadtrip CANNOT be overstated. Its a conpletely different world. And when youre on a vacation trip its SO nice to be able to look arround to see interesting things instead of your eyes being glued to the lines and you miss half the sights on your trip.
I would never in a million years drive an ICE car on a roadtrip before my Tesla

^^ THIS. (and free AutoPilot is good enough, don't need expensive FSD for highways.)
AP letting me relax a bit and enjoy the scenery (and car company), while just maintaining situational awareness, instead of constant "white line fever" gripping the wheel.. SO much better.
And, w/ premium connectivity and satellite photo maps, I can enjoy & understand scenery & landscapes FAR around me, not just visible from the road! POIs, interesting geographic features, etc... we found a cool ghost town silver mine once on a roadtrip, seeing cool colors on the map (mineral rocks), and found the POI. And clicking it gave me website, google reviews, photos , hours..!
It helps also driving, huge nav screen w/ google POIs/landmarks helps me reliably find where i want to go, not just need to go... instead of trying to peek at tiny phone...
just wish I could have my saved google placemarks appear onscreen too, that would be awesome personal-itinerary mapping!
Other gas cars may have some lane-keeping features like AP, and they may have maps, but they STINK compared to Teslas... even Android Auto/Carplay, was horrible.
Tied to my (1yr old) phone, it was SLOW , lost lots of features vs native google maps (nearly all POIs), and.. overheated my phone and crashed it!
I DO wish that tesla's GPS cached map data better, so it works better (including route/charge planning) when you lose LTE connection in remote spots...

Thank you for going through these. I like your ideas but at least out West and I'm sure many other parts of the country there is more than 30 miles between Chargers sometimes it's 60 or 80. So if you go to 20% and you want to make it to the next charger and it's 40 miles away you're not going to make it. The other big problem for me on the West Coast is their are not very many Chargers where you can use the bathroom and get something to eat. A lot of the early Chargers were just put in a parking lot quite often at a hotel and the hotel does not want people just walking off the street to use their bathroom and there's also nothing to eat.

I bought FSD but I don't use it much even on the highway. The necessity of having to hold the steering wheel just so sucks because I often can't reposition my hands to the bottom of the wheel without the nag turning on. So I usually drive with just cruise control on so I can steer while resting my hands at the bottom of the wheel. So much more comfortable than having to constantly tug at the wheel or have my hands placed at 9 and 3 so the natural weight of my hands keeps the nag away.
    Too much babysitting involved.
Once Tesla drops the steering wheel nag I will probably use FSD all the time.

Yup. We did a 650+mi roadtrip in one day, 12hrs driving, and... I felt MORErelaxed & less-fatigued on arrival that evening, than a FOUR hour previous gas car drive, let alone 8hrs ICE trip.
Charge stops do help a lot (some sightseeing stops too), enforcing rest/stretch breaks, but AutoPilot is the biggest fatigue reduction factor! Don't have to hold the wheel tightly, attention doesn't have to be constantly 100% focussed on road and lanes, you can relax a bit and maintain "supervisory" situational awareness, vs constant tactical awareness.
Some ICE cars now do have pretty good lanekeeping features, so it's no longer strictly Tesla AutoPilot, but... seems to work better for me (as long as no phantom braking, I still have radar, helps.)
The GREAT google satmap on Tesla helps a ton as well- all of google maps POIs, sat photos, etc...
Oh, and supercharging for me, is still 30-50% cheaper than gas car trips. Not including FREE destination charging at hotels etc! (I saved $100+ charging free in Death Valley... vs $9/gal gas!)
Remote spots like national parks or rural destinations, ARE bit more challenging and require more careful pre-planning. But city-city roadtrips, where you know charging is available on arrival, as you say, it's dead simple- follow the car nav.

    • @cgamiga
      @cgamiga 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

PS: corrections for video... the CAR nav shows the supercharger open stall count and status... and routes you... and bills to the CAR... NOT the APP.
And, for highways, free standard AutoPilot is good enough and mostly safer than crazy humans... no need for $$ FSD on highways. (only exception I've seen, is... switching me into left-turn lanes/exits, instead of staying straight, eek!)

Each year I usually take a road trip from San Diego to Sea Ranch (just over 600 miles one way). It usually takes about 30 minutes longer in our Model Y than it did in our Pilot. The drive is far more enjoyable in the Model Y. I use Autopilot for the majority of the freeway driving (reduces fatigue, allows me to pay more attention to other vehicles, and be safer when I eat a snack or have a drink). When we stop to change we are able to leave the climate control on so we return to a car that is 70 degrees instead of 110+ degrees. Most of our charging stops we have to wait no more than 5 minutes for charging to complete after everyone has gone to the bathroom and gotten a snack. Allows me to have a bit of a rest instead of rushing to get back on the road.

Is regularly running your car battery below %20 bad for the longevity of the battery ? From what I understand we should do it sometimes same as charging to %100 so the car system can recalibrate. My understanding is the Goldilocks. Zone is 80-20 % for ultimate battery health. This would apply to so some types of batteries but not all.
I went last summer 3000km return trip first time no issue with charging one of the spots did have one stall down. I got a spot as soon as I pulled in everytime. No need to charge all the way just follow direction on the car to charge as indicated. I did often let it go a bit longer just for extra safety. Alert to phone when at 5 or ten minute mark would be a nice option or reminder. If when your away from the vehicle. This could be an easy setting in the app. Tesla would know when you’re away from the car.

You are correct, 20 to 80 is best for the NMC battery LFP Can go to 100%. However, it is also how long it stays at that state. So if you arrive at the station at 5% immediately plug in. You're doing very little damage to the battery as you've charged it back up to 20 in no time. The same goes for charging to 100%. I do it right before I leave on my trip if I actually need 100%. Temperature is also important for longevity batteries like to be fast charged and discharged at about the temperature humans like. Tesla take care of most of this for you. I might charge the car to 80% when the car is warm from driving before going to the hotel if it doesn't have a destination charger and then leave in the morning when it's cold.

    Just a note here:
If you have not gone on road trips your Tesla will be really off on its estimates of how far you can go. The first road trip I took in my HW4 2023 model Y, it was constantly overestimating how much charge I would have left at the next supercharger.... often it was 10% to 12% off.
As I put more miles on the car it got better and better at estimating but still was off by 5%.
So be cautious and whenever the car says that you've put enough juice in to get to the next charger, with at least 10% remaining, don't believe it. Add an extra 10% more charge into your car until it says you will arrive at the next station with at least 20%...... you will be glad you did!

My first Tesla was a 2013 MS. Back in the day Tesla didn't do route planning. I would start charging and look at where my next charging session would likely be. I set my display to show distance, not % charge. I usually charged till my estimated charge was 50-70 miles more than the actual distance. As I drove I just compared my estimated charge distance to the actual remaining distance. If I was burning too much energy at 75mph, I would just slow down to 70 or 65. Also the fact that allot of people on trip do stop, they don't go on uncomfortable marathons just to get from A to B across a state.
It's also a healthier routine this way and, unlike with a gas car, you don't have to be standing there by the pump waiting for it to finish so u can pay and go, the routine is different, you get to walk around and stretch, grab lunch, or even watch a cat video with a slice of pizza for 15 minutes or so.

It is like my California car had windshield washer fluid that froze on the windshield when I made a road trip to Idaho last month and visited a town over 6000 feet high. My daughter told me to buy local windshield washer fluid because it is good to -34 F.

Charging stations become the 1950s equivalent of a drive-in sock-hop burger joint like on "Happy Days." Some years ago the US transportation system investigated autonomous vehicle control on the nations highways and deemed it too costly to require vehicle manufacturers to implement and for the government to build the interstate structure necessary to support a GPS type location determination network and crash avoidance systems. Enter Tesla EVs with (almost) FSD. EVs are still too expensive overall-price, FSD, upgrades, add-ons, insurance, battery longevity, and replacement costs. Practically need to be a millionaire to afford one, let alone two or more in an inflated society 🤔

Prof John - maybe you are misled by the gas guzzlers enabled by super cheap gas prices in USA . My wife has Stellantis van that does 60+ mpg , tank range is 792 miles with our nearest Tesla charger 75 mins away vs 2 minutes to nearest gas station.
With taxes and no fracking a litre of gas here costs what a gallon costs in USA, 🇺🇸citizens are lucky fracking allowed unlike European.
Energy Transition will be longer and more complicated than some uncritical folks imply (in my opinion!)

A seldom mentioned joy is the mapping out of charging stops ahead of time, to maximize the efficiency of charging between 5% and 75%, using only V3 (250 kW) Superchargers. It’s like putting together an interesting puzzle.

Tell Elon it's time for him to offer his believers 'Supercharge-while-driving' ... like the old fashioned US Airforce has.

I'd rather have a gas car than a Tesla road trip. But I'd rather have a Tesla to road trip in than a gas car to road trip in. I'd also rather be healthy for a day than sick for a year.

Breathing the fumes while you fill up a gas car is not good. That stuff is toxic.

Stop racing through the country. Stop on the way a " smell the flowers" 400 miles is 6-7 hours. Good time to take a break..... or stay over night.

No no no you can’t do this in an EV. Takes 300 hours just to go 500 miles. 😜

Being a non-tesla owner, I am wondering how much supercharging actually costs on a trip and how it compares to an ice vehicle. Also, I am going to be installing a home charger separated from my house eventually. Thinking about buying a used MY LR vs new MY RWD for range, not sure I'm understanding whether this is better due to battery degradation. Thanks for your efforts

A general guideline is that fuel for a Carboni car costs 9 times as much as electricity for a Tesla.

    1. No mention of the cost savings in a Tesla versus a gas car.
    2. I often do 1,000-miles per day during a roadtrip in my MY. How? Autopilot + FSD allows me to enjoy the landscape.
