The sad part of Picard to me at least and only my opinion, was it was a chance to really ramp up the romulans and flesh out a lot more about them. There was some groundwork with the quil... Qualat.. Space nuns and the zhat vash, but then it switched to synths and asimov and I feel cheated again. Picard I did like was seeing the actual romulan people depicted as people, the (and I will get this right) Qualat Milat? Being an ancient but oft maligned sect of romulan society that was a moderate sect, meeting of the reserved vulcan ideology and the overt and unrestrained romulans. The problems arose internally within the "exiles" and the radical groups quickly swooped to power over the traditionalists through a generation. The suppression of anything vulcan to be Independant spread like a wildfire. Until it reached a plateau. Then sects like the qualat Milat grew as counter revolotionists and so the cycle began. The progressives shared cloaking tech with the klingons on exchange for thier hardier ship designs, because the romulans built for purpose frigates for partisan skirmishes. Their war with earth was only even footed because thier fleet was a migrant one repurposed with old nuclear tech from the divergence from vulcan. Compared to an nx class oh they looked imposing, but to a newly minted constitution a hundred years later vs the d7 they looked like garbage scows. So they, like the Japanese after ww2 used thier tech and ingenuity as thier weapons. they tried to begin a dialogue. The conservatives closed that down and tried to conserve fleet strength. And so on and do on. I can imagine purely as head Canon that by allying with the Qualat Milat picard had inadvertently stumbled on an internal political shitstorm and stirred the hive.
Essentially, the romulans never actually were a powerhouse until around 2350 properly. When they learned patience and innovation pays off, but it cost them because of infighting and internal struggles. As for the remans.i dunno. They were miners

It’s very common throughout history for allies in war to become hated enemies afterwards. Athens and Sparta allied to stop Persian expansion and then later became rivals themselves, culminating in the Pelopennese War. Rome and Carthage allied against Pyrrhus of Epirus and almost immediately entered into armed conflict after Pyrrhus’ withdrawal from Magna Graecia. Octavian and Mark Anthony allied against Caesar’s assassins and later became enemies as well. Even the USA was deeply distrustful of Great Britain after WW1, and actively made plans for war with GB.

You would be pleased to know that I've been kind of kicking one around, although of course I doubt it will ever see the light of day.
I call it Star Trek: Dawn. It carries the ST saga into the 25th century, and it works something like this:
The year is 2402. Kira has just been made President of Bajor, and faces the task of building up a fledgling state amid a very complex political situation. The Provisional Government has been made permanent, and now shares power with the church in a sort of Iran-like arrangement. The Maquis have laid down their arms and joined the political process, some holding office in the Federation government, while others have seats in the Bajoran Parliament. Kira's moderates, who want to reduce the power of the church and ultimately secularize Bajoran society, are faced with a conservative party who wants to keep the old ways, led by a very savvy but corrupt female politician with a personality very similar to Kai Winn.
The first episode begins with Jean-Luc Picard's funeral (old age), and Kira's victory speech. We find that Sisko is retired and living on Earth; Nog has his own command--the USS Cairo, being Edward Jellico's old ship; Jadzia has died and her symbiote has been been passed to a young female named Eliya. Eliya Dax is in command of Deep Space 9--and now gets to call Sisko "old man" : )
Jake lives on Bajor, and has become a famous writer and controversial political speaker (his stance is a bit Jordan Peterson-ish).
Unlike previous ST's, most of the action in Dawn takes place dirtside, on Bajor--following the story of Kira as she applies herself to the delicate of task of uniting the disparate factions of her world. So it's a lot of talking heads--essentially aimed at those who like the politics of ST more than the battle scenes. Kind of John Adams in space, if you will. (If you have not HBO's John Adams series, I urge you to check it out.)
      Cast, where not already known:
Kai Malak (Kira's conservative rival): Rosamund Pike
      Jake Sisko: Don Cheadle
      Eliya Dax: Kirsten Prout

Same here. By the logic of Star Trek 2009, the events of that movie would have erased the whole timeline up to that point, which we know from producers isn't the case. They insist that it's an "alternate timeline." So I'd say that for any of the events of the original timeline to have happened at all, it *couldn't* be the same universe as the one in which Romulus was destroyed.

Dang, holy coitus interruptus Batman, you left out the destruction of the Romulan homeworld by their star going SUPERNOVA! That crushed the Romulans as we saw in the Picard series. Ultimately leading to their reunion with Vulcans and then Vulcan becoming Ni'Var (Discovery). They seemed to have ultimately joined the Federation (Discovery) in 3190 after solving The Burn. Would have loved the announcer here going through that part of the Romulans' history!

Beta Quadrant, yet they were able to encounter Earthers in the 2150s and return in 2266 without warp drive. Archer was able to stumble into their mine field with the very limited range of a warp 5 ship....
Much Retconning happened with Romulans during and following TOS. They are a mess of contridictions.
Original character study Summer 1966. They were on the other side of Vulcan, close by, but in prohibited space behind a DMZ. Much like North Korea and China in 1966 were just on the other side of Japan which had been conquered by the Allies in 1945 and now did not have a major Imperial Navy anymore, but are now key to Allied (NATO) interests. The Romulans had imposed self isolation for the last century, just as NK and China had for a decade in the real world of 1966. The Romulans looked just like the Vulcans...who were supposed to be our good friends NOW...but why the two way racism and some unspoken BIG past beef between Earthers and Vulcan.
In the original words of Bones to Spock in season one: "Is that why your people were conquered?". Later to be contradicted in TOS as the Vulcans became more of a pacifist Great Britain (whatever fantasy that is) with POSH Vulcan oration and more universe experience.

4:10 That's a War Bird, not a Bird of Prey. Before some smart ass tries to say "but it's shaped like a War Eagle, or a King Eagle" That ship in that episode was impulse only, so it could only be a War Bird. If it could go warp, then it would have been a War Eagle, or possibly King Eagle (not likely, it only fired one Plasma at a time, so would have most likely been a War Eagle). The Bird Of Prey is a Klingon light Cruiser. Several of them were sold to the Romulans for conversion to use Plasma instead of Disrupters, but it's still a Klingon hull.

The Romulans were a paper tiger empire. They were highly advanced, but lacked industrial capacity. Perhaps due to lack of resources, internal stability or their dependence on slave labour. Evidence is their reliance on force multipliers like cloaking technology and subterfuge. Before the Dominion War they lost a fleet of 20Warbirds attacking the Founders homeworld and this seems to have been a far bigger blow to the Romulans than it would have been to any other major power. Their subsequent non-aggression pact bought them time to rebuild but even with two years peace they don’t appear to emerge any stronger than their rivals. Despite the fact both Federation and Klingons were losing ships daily. The Romulans appeared strong but simply lacked the industrial might to absorb heavy losses.
