  • The Cardassian Union was built on the belief that in the struggle for survival, every resource was critical. Their ambitious drive to become a dominant force in the galaxy however, would lead them down a path that would bring only suffering and war.

I always thought it sounded very much inspired from the Art of War from Sun Tzu , most notably the part where he describes that " ultimate Victory is to subdue your enemy without fighting " .
In this case well , fight him and soon he will realise that it was a mistake to engage you in the first place .
Either way , it makes me think there might be some of " Cardassian Art of War " , a general code and ideals enforced in the military .
It wouldn't be surprising given how the Army holds such an important position in Cardassian society and hierarchy .

Ooh well, let me tell you a story. I once knew a Cardassian, a dashing, handsome young man with a promising career, but one day, through no fault of his own, he found himself exciled and alone with nowhere to turn. But did he give up? No. He struck upon a brilliant plan: instead of fleeing for the rest of his life he sought shelter in the one place no one expected him to go: in a stronghold of his people's most hated enemies. There, surrounded by hostile strangers, he built a life and there, against all odds, against the merciless logic of the universe itself, he thrived.

DS9 might have singlehandedly made the Cardassians the most well-realized alien race in Star Trek, perhaps even more than the Klingons, Romulans or Borg. The fact that they are so devious, and at times unlikable, yet their motives are completely understandable and the outcome of their choices so tragic in the end, makes for such a compelling sci-fi race.

If you think about it, the inefficient Detapa Council led to the ruin of all of Cardassia. They were never allowed to decide much of anything, but the one time that they decided something, it had catastrophic consequences: Ending the Occupation of Bajor. Think about it. Ending the Occupation meant relinquishing control of the Wormhole. Had Cardassia controlled it, Cardassia would've built many colonies in the Gamma Quadrant, eventually meeting with the Dominion. They likely would've formed an alliance with them in the interest of self-preservation, thereby also giving the Dominion an opening into the Alpha Quadrant, which the other realms would've been too late to do anything against. In essence, had the Detapa Council not fucked up so royally, the Dominion would've ruled half the Galaxy, with Cardassia having a very comfortable place in that structure. Bad for others, yes, but excellent for Cardassia.

In addition to this, the entire deal with the C'tan got changed as well. Some people like this change, some don't. I personally see no reason why TI would even bother to do a 4th edition Necron video because A. It's not canon, and B. Before they were given actual motivations they were honestly boring and the only thing they would be saying the entire video is "they want to kill everything." Pretty sure 1d4chan has a pretty good and simple description on how Necrons changed after Matt Ward

Over the following two years, the Khitomer Accords between the Klingon Empire and the UFP were expanded to include the Cardassian Union and the Ferengi Alliance. Small error, the Cardassian fleet switched first and then the massacre started, Damar's rebellion, the new legate's incompetence, combined with the fleet turning made the dominion determine the Cardassians to be way more trouble than they were worth so they were just decided to massacre them

Except that they didn't...because replicators exist. So all they had to do to get everything they needed was steal *one* Federation replicator and reverse engineer it.
See how the insistence on the Federation being a Perfect MarySutopia completely breaks every potentially interesting point in the Trek universe? It actually makes the existence of *any* of the Federation's imperialistic neighbors shallow and pointless, it even makes the "greedy Ferengi" shallow by making their greed for the sake of greed rather than for the sake of the evolutionary drive to acquire resources gone overboard like it is in real life. Now the writers could have rectified this point by making the holier-than-thou Federation jealously guard its replicator technology...but that would have been morally questionable and made the Federation less than perfect and we can't have that eh, Comrade?

We have 3D printers today and they have solved exactly zero societal problems. Adding to that, replicators cannot make Dilithium or Antimatter - both of which are necessary starship fuels - and replicators cannot run without a power supply, and they cannot make energy. Nor can they revitalize a dead planet's biosphere.
_"Now the writers could have rectified this point by making the holier-than-thou Federation jealously guard its replicator technology"_
Have you not heard of the Prime Directive? Giving a replicator to a primitive world is treated effectively the same as treason: with full legal punishment leading possibly to being assigned to a mental realignment facility.

I love Cardassia by far my favourite Trek race and I love how fleshed out they were during DS9. One thing that always bothers me though: people always say (like in this video) that the Cardassian fleet learned about the bombings on Cardassia and defected but this makes no sense. At the time they defected the rebellion had cut off Cardassia's long range communications so that the Dominion leadership couldn't contact their fleet and oversee the battle (leading to their centre being kept thin and easy to punch through). Its only after this happens that communications are restored and the Dominion learns that the Cardassians have defected leading to the female changling ordering the entire population exterminated. Therefore it should have been impossible for the fleet to learn what had happened on Cardassia and for that to cause them to defect.

LIFE STARTS NOW I agree, hence why the Cardassians hated them so much. The Bajorans, a possible offshoot of the Cardassians when they were still Hebitian, still clung to the way of life which brought their ancient civilization low. As the Hebatians became the Cardassians, and their militaristic and state worshipping way of life took hold, they looked upon their Bajoran cousins as some sort of sick parody of themselves, a race who dare commit the heresy of rejecting the almighty state and putting the good of others before the good of the state. As such they saw such heretics fit only for being brought low and killed, if not to bring some sort of balance back to the universe.

And yet they can interbreed. As far as i recall nearly all humanoid species in the ST universe are the descendants of an ancient civilization that seeded its genetic material trough the Galaxy.

    • @jonathanhirst6997

    • @Actual_Neanderthal
      @Actual_Neanderthal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is true, but very few can species interbreed without medical intervention (ie naturally), except Cardassian's and Bajoran's can, this would indicate either a shared genome, or the writers wanted to comment on mixed race babies that week.

Weird thing about Cardassians was that there was this entire war that happened off-screen during The Next Generation series. And we just got like a few episodes where we were 'at peace' and trying to manage the aftereffects. It always felt like a bunch of episodes explaining the war got skipped. Does anyone know the genesis of the Cardassians in TNG?

Been watching this video a lot because I’m gearing up mentally to play a second game of Risk with my bros. We made it themed, where we each take on the persona of a fictional army: myself being the Cardassian Union. Since I won last time, the new scenario for next game is me defending Earth from my bros as they pretend to embody separate invading forces: The Daleks and House Atreides. Wish me luck Templin Institute!

…you know, I just realized. Depending on when precisely the Cardassian Union was formed, it's more than possible that the Bajorans and the Hibitians were in contact, bridged by solar sails and capable of communion and trade. Which means that the Bajorans, to begin with, saw their old friend rising from the ashes of their own destruction…and were conquered and occupied by those they once saw so much in common with. Meanwhile, Bajor becomes a symbol to the Cardassians of what they had once been, almost a paradise of old…and so they seek to claim it, both to "regain" what they lost and to cement once and for all their dominance over that old idea, that old "peace".
    Good GRIEF.
