    The Negh'var has to be my second favourite of the Klingon vessels with the Bird of Prey taking the top level.

      Bird of Prey, Vorcha and then Negh'var for me, the pincery front of the devault Vor'Cha just plain looks better than the round head of the Neghvar.

    The Negh'var is the first time the Klingon Empire really felt _united_ on the battlefield. The small Bird of Prey variants they had before were always more a swarm of individual skirmishers doing their own thing, and even the Vor'cha was """just""" a bigger gun for those in power, impressive as it was.
    But this is a proper command ship, which fulfills a distinctly different role than the rest of the fleet. To use effectively it requires cooperation and strategic coordination. And seeing that from the Klingons - who had mainly been held back by their infighting for individual goals - is a scary sight for whoever happened to be their enemy at the time.

    The Birds of Prey always reminded me of knives, small but fast and lethal up close.
    The Negh'Var seems like a Bat'leth, slow but brutal when it hits. It even kinda resembles The Sword of Kahless. The 4 disruptor cannons being the 4 main spikes and the middle spike that his Bat'leth had. When we see them use Bat'leths they strike people a lot with the center but its just a blade there, Kahless's has this massive spike instead.

    I remember discovering this bad boy in Star Trek Armada. My older brother liked using the Ion Cannon from a few of them to blap down ships. I played the Federation and Romulans a lot more... and when he discovered what the Sovereign Class' special ability was, to basically reflect torpedo AND ion cannon shots in a PvP round we did was priceless. He fired off like six ion cannons at two of my Sovereigns. And then they ate them all in return fire, killing half his battleship line. Good times. It only ever worked once, though.

    Joking aside, i do really like the Negh'var design. It was the Klingon's main capital ship in the two (good) star trek RTS games that were released about 24 years ago. It makes a lot of sense-while also being heavily ironic-that this class' production was the baby of Changeling Martok.
    Fitting in that in terms of design language and mission profile it more closely resembles the Jem'Hadar battlecruiser than typical Klingon designs.
    Ironic because they saw the most action being turned _against_ the Dominion's forces.

Give it a trait that effectively turns cannon rapid fire into beam overload overload, massively increase the single target damage.
      Would that maybe be overpowered? Maybe, as long as they keep it to 8 total weapons I couldn't see it doing much other than giving people another option for something to play as a bricky cannon ship. • @Choalith_Ikanthe
      @Choalith_Ikanthe 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The Romulans' rejection of all AI means that every ship's system either has to be overbuilt, compensated with more workers, or involve an even more clever form of non-thinking automation. The Klingons are progressing linearly through Power. The Romulans are already the most technically advanced Alpha Quadrant power, but are having to backtrack over their own shortcomings; They're learning how to Miniaturize their advanced technology. Because they know, if they can't, the Federation's technical ingenuity is literally nipping at their heels. The Federation's gift of Problem Solving can leapfrog the Romulans the moment they settle down to try. The Romulans can't depend on simply having better ships anymore. Especially without Romulus and its greater infrastructure to support such grand projects.

      Scale and industrial capacity.
      The Romulans set up their industry to produce ships against the other Alpha Quadrant powers under a central command. They could build big ships cheaper because they focused on only that. Realizing that a battleship only fleet is less flexible, the Romulans need a lighter class if ship.
      Klingons inversely have a decentralized production base with each house effectively producing its own fleet. Only by bringing that industrial capacity under the central power of the Empire as a whole could they produce ships on this scale, at scale.

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Choalith_Ikanthe Are the Romulans more advanced? Like the Klingons, they simply gear all of their technology towards their military, and while their cloaking technology is certainly the most sophisticated, Federation technology is always just a little ahead. That said, the Romulans are happy to steal any technological advancement and they've never let the Federation get out far ahead.

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gmradio2436 There's also the fact that Romulans build for psychological reasons above all. The D'Deridex is a big imposing ship meant to stun opponents into submission before shots are even fired. When the Dominion came, they realized that they needed something fast and powerful, a strike vessel, hence the Valdore. The Scimitar seems like an all purpose solution for threats like the Borg and the Dominion. A new level of effectiveness against overpowering threats and terror to those they would conquer.

That is, if the armor thicker than the Vor'cha. If not, then it is a Battle Cruiser. Even if in TNG and DS-9 this is a Fast Battleship, it may be reclassified as a Battle Cruiser as time moves on. Funny yall keep bringing up the overrated "tough little ship" that almost got annihilated by a single shot from a Borg plasma beam, or the heavy cruiser that couldn't target lock a B'rel if its life depended on it unless/until the writers decided they needed it to. Fed ships are ALWAYS woefully underpowered until the story needs them to suddenly defeat foes that are indisputably superior in every way, then they get plot armor and plot aim. Strip away their plot contrivances and a single Negh'Var or even a K'tinga could take them on ANY two at a time and win, no contest.
      The Negh'var in particular would wipe the floor with the Defiant without its plot armor because the Negh'Var has actual armor, not just shields that Starfleet somehow magically finds a way to modulate through when the plot demands that, too. Well you can't modulate your way past a dozen layers of Duranium, and a Negh'var only has to pop Sisko's baby once with all that forward firepower and it instantly becomes a memorial plaque at Starfleet Academy.
      Just take away the plot armor and see how badly you want to be a Starfleet captain then.

    2:00 at this side angle seems to be the best angle to attack it as there don't seem to be many weapons deployed at this angle
    this style of warship has its heavy weapons aligned along the front lateral, much like a traditional land tank and is aligned to linear 2d thinking along 360 degrees and fighting.
    In space, everything is 3D thinking and 360 degrees (front/rear, left/right, top/bottom, left and right sides) and combinations thereof.
    One key flaw I see in all Starship designs is that they fail to take advantage of the Carrier and Fighter principles.
    By this, I mean that even Enterprise D could carry several armed shuttles (manned or unmanned) to be launched when they see they are suddenly outnumbered or outgunned by an enemy.
    In many episodes the Federation ship has its weapons knocked out in the fight and left defenseless and unarmed, but having a squadron of fighters supporting it in the fight should more than enough to defeat the enemy and cause them to retreat or be killed.
    So in this snapshot, those squares at the center top of the ship can be the hangar bays for storing and launching 18 fighters.
    And since there isn't really an up or down in space, they can have the identical thing under the ship as well for a total of 36 launch bays for shuttles and/or fighters.

One would almost forget the beta quadrant even exists given how invested the two beta quadrants powers are invested in the alpha quadrant that l rather than their own beta. Thank you for bringing up the beta powers

    The Neg'var really makes me think of U.S. naval . . fleets(?)/ divisions(?), I forget the term.
    Consisting on ONE very big, powerful but slow main ship, and a number of smaller, still powerful, but faster ships to provide support & cover as needed.
    (While the "big boy" walked up & just pulverized whatever it was facing.)
    The Neg'var is HUGE, powerful, slow as molasses, but if one shows up? You BETTER high tail it out of there! (or have a substantial force & good strategy to take it on.)
    If it shows up with support vessels? . . . . Run. Just run.

      If you're thinking Cold War, it'd probably be Carrier Battle Groups or, more on point with the Negh'var, Surface Action Groups.

    Late to this party but when it comes to the Negh'Var, even in current STO it's an intimidating ship. Well, simply damage sponge to the experienced player at the very least but much like the first Goomba in Super Mario 1985, many unwary fall victim to this battleship. Then there's the massive DPS guys. It's a question of whether or not the Negh'Var ever gets off that lucky hit that one-shots the player.

    How does their need for "honor" related to frontline combat and stuff translate to members of the crew? We always see like, the bridge officers and stuff when it comes to the klingons but how much honor is there in being the torpedo loader, or the ships doctor? I'd say like, how much honor is there in the ships cook and the cleaning crew, but obviously they're filthy places and eat their food raw so I doubt they even have those.

    • @drewf41
      @drewf41 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't remember the episode titles, but in DS9, when Martok returns to service (with Worf and Dax on-board) it seems implied that the ship's honor is the crew's honor. And, when VOY finds the Klingon ship in the Delta Quardrant, the Captain's honor sort of trickles down to the Crew's honor.
