Hi, just wanted to say thanks for this tip. It saved me time and money. The airflow meter screws were a little loose and dust was getting in. I cleaned the sensor very carefully with a cotton bud. Now I have more power than before and the engine light has turned off.
    Cheers.

    Thanks a Lot!
Your advise helped my L200 (2016, 75,000km) with a similar issue. I cleaned it and worked instantly.

So what is a good DIY way of cleaning this delicate sensor? My 3.2 Pajero is also putting out some black smoke, especially when the outside air is hot and when there is just a little throttle opening, just enough to maintain speed. To remedy this, I must either release the pedal or step on it. No one I have talked to, including the dealership, seems to know what it could be. The dealer wanted to replace the egr valve and intake manifold, something that sounds a bit overkill to me. Something tells me there is a fuel/air mixture problem. But no codes or errors. BTW, I removed and cleaned the EGR valve, and it works fine.
EDIT: Blocked off the EGR pipe at the exhaust cooler and cleaned inside the throttle body as much as possible without disassembling too much. The MAF sensor was extremely filthy, drowning in a black substance resembling used motor oil. Now there is no more disgusting black smoke, and much better fuel economy, going from well over 11L/100km down to around 8L/100km (highway). Now I don't have to be embarrased when driving around anymore! Good stuff. Still, would be nice to get that ECU remapped.

We don't have the same problems with dust in the UK, the rain keeps it down! We just have problems with "rust"!!!

I have a 2014 built diesel Triton, its developing a stutter when maintaining speed about 90-100, also before it was warmed up the other day it smoked alot and wouldn't respond to throttle...it seems to clear and then runs good...but the stutter is still there intermittently...any help or advice would be great ...thank you..

I have 96 pajero 2.8 TD 4m40 engine. The vehicle was driving really heavy ,losing power and black smoke. The engine light came on for:
12* Boost pressure sensor system and 41* Main throttle solenoid valve system.
I gave to my local mechanic who checked and tested the boost, turbo was boosting correctly. Checked throttle valve and components. They removed and tested EGR components and adjusted the belt.
    What could be wrong?

Hi what happens if the hose from the turbo to the throttle body blows off? This happened to me the other day and I lost power. I put the hose back on and after 8 starts the engine light went off. What would cause this to happen? The vehicle recently was serviced and a anew air cleaner element put in.

You can buy MAF cleaner, but Mitsubishi MAF sensors seem to hate the stuff. Pretty sure I killed one of mine with it a few years ago!
If you need still a replacement I've got some on hand.

Honestly, my Triton went better when that sensor was dirty. It didn't get damaged in the cleaning process either. And why would you recommend an oiled air cleaner filter? Those things cause more trouble than good. For a start your fuel usage will go through the roof if you fit one. There is already enough oil & running through the airways of these motors & you want to add more from these ancient filers.
