I couldn't get my wardrobe to work until I took EVERYTHING out of my wardrobe.... I tried it ALL on, matched it up with what it went with, and hung it up, if it didn't fit, I didn't like it, I had nothing to go with it, I couldn't name one place I would wear it.... then it went in a huge pile, which I took to donate....suddenly, everything worked and I've enjoyed getting dressed. I've regained my health and lost quite a bit of weight, so I think it's time to do it again, then I'll have room to go buy some new clothes that fit, 😊

I’m sure I have “too many” clothes, but I love and wear them all. I don’t see the point of getting rid of things just to have a minimalist or capsule wardrobe, as many YTers recommend. I love the abundance and variety I have.

Hi Kimberly, I definitely don't consider myself a minimalist when it comes to my wardrobe. My goal is to teach people how to buy clothes that work together so they have an effective wardrobe filled with lots of variety rather than a closet full of one-offs that don't work together - I think we're on the same page! 😍

@@annewiseman9983 I only recently started watching these style videos and I've been fascinated by a British woman who makes a monthly capsule from her larger wardrobe. She takes 20-25 pieces and will only wear outfits she can make from those for one month. Then the next month she creates a different capsule and so on. She also tests her capsule by closing her eyes and pulling a top, a bottom and a third piece. No matter what she pulls it all goes together! I've decided to try this; I think it's a good way to rotate through everything in my closet and weed out anything I don't actually reach for.

Never choose your clothes in the morning! Chose at night after checking the weather forecast.
Then put the choices out and include everything including pantyhose or tights and t shirts or any clothes you are wearing underneath. AND include all accessories. Then it's simple. You also can note what's missing that will make your wardrobe work.
Your clothes haven't changed! Your clothing needs have changed.

Once you shift to this mindset you never go back to the other chaotic time wasting way! You feel stream lined and ready for anything!
Make sure if you're changing bags to do the changeover the night before, that way you don't miss anything. A real bugbear when you realise uh oh...you left a card or something major in your other handbag!
When packing for a vacation put all options on the bed and really check down to all combinations and edit. Edit again.
Try to stick to ONE neutral. That way you're not lugging too much stuff around and actually have room for new buys!

It is important to have a wardrobe that will allow you to look really good regardless of your weight on a particular day and for any event you might have to attend. You should be able to have appropriate clothing for all seasons and events. Buy the best quality you can and take care of it. As items become no longer usable we can discard them. End of story. Keep your closet neat and tidy and there should be no problem.

There is only ONE item that I still wish I had for the "memories."
Well, I am a senior citizen (over 65), but when I was a teenager I went to one of my first concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood,California . I lived with my parent's then and not far from the Hollywood area. I went to see my favourite folk singer named Donovan. Actually I still am a fan of Donovan and yes he is stlll around and starts a new tour in Ireland in May 2022.
So, I STILL remember what I wore to see Donovan at the Hollywood Bowl when I was about 17 years old. It was this really cute soft pink satin
mini-dress with short puffy sleeves. It was a lovely lovely dress and NEVER would fit me now. It was probably a size 3 or size 5 and I was a tiny teenager at 5' 1" and not even a 100 pounds at 16, 17 years old.
So yes, I wish I still had that dress, to see it again. Sadly, I never had any photos of the dress or any photos of me wearing it.
I truely miss this dress for sentimental reasons when I went to see my favourite folk singer named Donovan at the Hollywood Bowl in the 1960's.

I retired not long before pandemic and consciously lost weight in the past 2 yrs. That was the impetus to get rid of a ton of things that I didn't need/ didn't fit/ didnt like, etc. It took awhile to do this but it was so worth it. I live in a climate with cold weather so automatically some items I don't wear for several months but that's ok. I've donated a lot, sold a little, and feel so good when I look at the closet. Very cool how you mentioned to write things you need in a note pad. I just started doing that this year, writing in a note pad on my phone a list of clothing that I needed. When I went to the store, I looked at my list and got the clothing that I needed. For example, I realized I had a black and white sweater but I couldn't wear it because I didn't have a white long sleeve blouse and I didn't have a short sleeve blouse. I live in PA so I needed a long sleeve for the winter and I needed a short sleeve blouse for the summer. Now I can wear my black and white sweater in the winter and summer because I brought a long sleeve and short sleeve white blouse! This has worked for me writing in a note pad on my phone ☺️
I also did a closet declutter and for the first time all of my clothes are organized and I have two sections of clothing, one section for work and one section for casual and weekend clothes. This system has also worked for me.

I have a lot of clothes, but most of them aren't actually in my closet. I've been organizing my extras and off-season clothes in bins, and it's definitely a work in progress. I have two sizes on hand because I bounce up and down in weight and water retention. I have clothes for all four seasons, which vary wildly. So, I'm learning by trial and error how my brain works. Do I need to organize by color, type (pants or sweaters or tees, for example), or style (jeans, cords, dress pants, shorts, for example) first? That's what's slowing me down. It turns out that I need to organize by type first, then color, then style. I also started reorganizing according to where I bought the items because of different fits, so I specify on the bin label where the clothes came from. It's complicated, but once it's done, I can change out my closet every three months without fussing. What I didn't realize before was how much room my thick sweaters take up! Whoa!

When I’m at our beach condo, it’s Lily Pulitzer with white jeans and sandals. When we are in the country, I wear jeans, tshirts, and trainers or boots. Each lifestyle has a different wardrobe. I would feel inappropriate without these different wardrobes and I love them all. But I also keep them at the location where they will be worn so I don’t have to drag clothes around.

How about “by garment type”? “By classification” could mean anything. I don’t have anything in my wardrobe that isn’t in perfect condition and ready-to-wear, yes, that means steamed or ironed, as appropriate, too. It would drive me nuts to pull out things from my closet that I can’t actually wear. Anything that needs washing, ironing, altering, polishing, etc. stays in my little laundry/work room until I can get to it.

If you are wearing them, then no, you don't have 'too many' clothes. If you are not wearing stuff, then pass it along (I donate to my local women's shelter). I don't follow trends or fashion crappola, so I am happy with the amount of clothes I have. My closet is organized, I've never 'lost' anything in it. And yeah, some days it takes me more than 5 minutes to pick something out - so what? 5 minutes isn't much time to decide how you feel today. Who decided 5 minutes was the goal time to get dressed? I repair anything that gets torn, I removed any 'stains' on dirty clothes...did we all just forget how to take of stuff? I even buy thrift clothes that need repair because I can get them cheaper and FIX them.

I already got rid of things that don't fit my current lifestyle but in my search for the perfect items, like blazers for example, I now have 10 and they're not all perfect for me. I shop second hand quite often get really nice pieces but previously I was picking things up that were almost right but not a wow. Now if it's not a wow it's a no. After watching this I'm headed upstairs to go through my closet and get rid of things that are taking up space, hangers, and confusing my closet. If I'm not sure about a particular item I'll put it in my spare closet and revisit it later.

i have an extensive, almost overwhelming volume of clothing. living in upstat NY we have for full seasons that, IMO require different levels of wind resistance, moisture wicking or stomach-covering clothes. i grew up dirt poor. some time in my mid 20s i was invited out to a club with a strict dress code. this something i rarely did as a ragging workaholic. i had to decline the invite out and turn down a guy i was madly in love with. i sat in my 3 bedroom house alone and stared into my massive walk in cloest lined completely in cedar that was completely empty. this was the first time i realized i was al of a sudden far more successful than i ever dreamed i could be yet i had 3 pairs of jeans 5shirts and 1 suit. i spent the last 7 yrs buying and shopping and buying so much clothing i had my father turn my entire basement into what looks like a salvation army store. its excessive and actually a lot of work to keep everything rotated and fresh not getting moldy or gross. but i decide long ago that idc what ppl think. I'm 32, gay, single and live alone. i sell real estate and most of my time outsidethe house is at high-end restaurants or at my office so looking good is a must. its a great hobby that isn't to expensive. it also gives me a confidence and ego boost to have a wardrobe that Opera or Cher would envy

Hi Carolyn, I agree - it is completely overwhelming when you have too much stuff. I recommend taking ALL items you haven't worn in the past year out of your closet and then store them in your basement, garage, spare bedroom, etc. for a few months. My guess is that you won't even miss those items! If that turns out to be true, you can take those items and donate or sell them! 😍Keep me posted on your progress!

For people struggling to get rid of clothes with sentimental value (I’ve been there), there are now so many creative ways to repurpose them- into pillows, blankets, even stuffed animals. Lots of sellers on Etsy will do this if they don’t know someone who can. Or, consider putting the sentimental piece in a keepsake bin, that way it’s out of your closet.. but still, let’s limit what we hang on to. 😉

I am pretty good at decluttering my wardrobe, being sentimental or thinking "but thise *used to* be my favourite" is a problem, but also: as fashion changes sometimes I cannot replace items that are worn with something that fits: e.g. favourite trousers that are threadbare. When I try and replace them all that's in the shops is "high waist," "short leg" type of cuts which are uncomfortable and look bad on me.

Have you thought about trying the 333 method? 33 items are in your closet for 3 months, then you change out for different items. You can do that every three months to match the seasons. I started doing that this year, although unseasonably warm weather this month meant that I couldn't wear my fall sweaters until now. So I'll only get a month to wear them before I change out for December. Truthfully, I don't need 33 items, so I have about 20 for each of my rotations.

In terms of clothing attached to memories, l've let go of clothing items connected to devastating sorrowful events, or bad dates etc.
I think it's prudent to keep a couple extra outfits for weight variations, as many women go up/down 3 - 5kg within a year.
My basic philosophy is 70% everyday wardrobe of basics that suit your lifestyle, 20% seasonal and 10% occasion wear.
I have 2 wardrobes - everyday & career/work. Both wardrobes are all year round/ all seasons.

Yes. I have a chronic health condition and before it was diagnosed, I put on 3 stone. Now I have treatment, I'm gradually losing that weight, but if I have a flareup, I can't move around and I get fatter. So I'm keeping the clothes that I like but are too tight/too loose so I don't have to replace the next time my weight fluctuates. But I do have a small number of clothes so the items that don't always fit are a small number too. If I had multiple outfits that didn't fit, I would thin them out.

I was holding onto clothes that were 15 years old simply because they were in good shape and my mother didn’t let me take them out of my closet in the hopes that I will fit in them someday soon. I realised that my closet was not working for me but I never really took the clothes out and kept adding in more clothes. Finally a month ago I took out a lot of clothes I think more than 40 to 50 pieces for donation because they were not working for me. Now my closet only hold those clothes that fit me. I definitely don't wear everything in my closet. And I found that the "if you haven't worn it in 1 year" rule really upset me because lets be honest: who wore anything nice during Covid shutdown? Most of my wardrobe wasn't worn after March 2020. It definitely makes me sad that a lot of clothes went unworn during the pandemic and are now out of style or off trend. I did a large closet edit in fall '21. But I'm definitely ready to edit again based on my current lifestyle. I'm learning how to purge without putting 10 different emotions on a piece of clothing. I read it more as a guideline than a rule you must keep. For example, I can go 2-3 years without needing my 'wedding guest dress', but I'm not going to get rid of it because it's classic, doesn't date and I'm only going to have to buy another dress the next time I'm invited to a wedding if I get rid of this one. Also, I dyed my own wedding dress dark navy and had it shortened slightly so that I can wear it as an evening dress - I need an evening dress even less often than I need a day dress for weddings, but again, it's a classic style, won't date, and it's there in my wardrobe for whenever I do need it.

Before you organize your closet, what this video I made on how to find your style: th-cam.com/video/9ufkkCEcZ2o/w-d-xo.html I think it will confirm my guess. It also looks like the James Perse tees tend to be neutrals and muted tones while we know the Lilly stuff is bright. Perhaps you need to create two capsules within your closet - one all muted tones and the other brights. Over the next few months, see which you gravitate to and wear more often. Or perhaps you wear brights in the spring/summer and muted tones in the fall and winter. Try this experiment and keep me posted on your progress! 🤩

You are lovely in that pink sweater. Your insight and knowledge of closet use is large. The information is spot on. I sew most of my wardrobe now. A lot of what you say about purchasing can be applied to sewing additional garments to help the clothes I love be more wearable. I have done a lot of what you are discussing here. I compiled a fabric swatch book. I also took loads of photos of my clothes and what accessories look good with them. The photos give me one step more, they help me to see how I look in my clothing, or outfits.
And knowing what feels good and looks good is a big part of feeling good when I put my outfits together. This is a great video to update and inspire me to keep at it and to come back around to review the process. This is important because now that I have a great working wardrobe with loads of outfits to wear, I still need to keep the closet organized and cohesive. You would think that making your own clothing, you would have a pretty minimal closet, but sewing clothing I love, wear and keep, I just keep adding. And retirement doesn't require much change in my wardrobe attire.
Thanks for sharing all this great information.

I like the color scheme of your clothes!! Lots of pink. I love pink.
One common theme in dressing well is a white cotton shirt and a blazer. That just doesn’t work for me. The cotton shirt wrinkles as soon as I put it on and where I live it’s too hot to wear blazers/jackets most of the year.

Hi Andrea, Thanks so much, I'm glad to hear you're a fellow pink gal! 💕As for wearing blazers, I have a few thoughts. If you really want to wear a blazer, opt for a cotton knit tee under it instead of a shirt. It won't be as bulky or get wrinkled. I love the look of blazers but don't wear them very often because I'm also in a warm climate (Southern California). Instead, I wear a light denim jacket, lightweight sweaters, and lots of wraps.

I work in a conservative office business dress, yet on my time off I love jeans and sweaters or tunics. Should I have one side of my closet for casual and the other for work attire?

Been there, seen it, don't it ..... Now, I am tired of hearing how I should only have a "perfect number". I was chatting with the psychiatrist where I work and her comment was ..... Being too strict with your closet comes from the same emotional problems that cause eating disorders.
So I absolutely agree with being organised, throwing old items out, stop keeping sentimental items ..... Really many of the ideas you mention here .... But, do what honestly works for you!
BTW, you look fab in that outfit - great colours for you!

I don’t recall that she told us a perfect number. I just took this as food for thought on how much we have that is unnecessary because honestly we aren’t wearing it. And I’m not referring to the dress you wear to a wedding.

The old power suits have got to go! Not for awhile now. The dress I wore to my daughters wedding is still in my closet. I'm wondering if I could wear the jacket? I have the pictures. This is why I answered yes to a lot of the questions. I still have a shawl from the disco days. I'm going to put my winter/ fat clothes in a trunk I will go through in the fall. I'm dealing with summer and everyday. I'm finding a place for my shoes! I have office shoes that need to go, I've been saving those for 20 years. I have a wedding dress from I don't remember which marriage it was. But I just do a little bit, every day.

I wear almost everything in my closet, but if I don’t wear it it’s usually because I don’t have a missing piece to complete the outfit. And then on my hunt to find that missing piece, I get ADHD shopping and buy other stuff 😫 I do have trouble finding items sometimes, but I usually end up finding it. This is great content

I've decluttered my wardrobe and I still have a lot of clothes. My weight fluctuates so I keep just a few pieces for when it does that. So I think I'll wear everything I have now. If not I can always re-evaluate at the end of each season.

Once a month I go through my closet and every time I find garden shirts way to many...plus knit tops to go under shirts...thought it a good idea...never wore...sweat shirts...way to many...
By doing it once a month...it gives me time to really think about it...then let go...also my style has changed ...so away with I'll never wear again...and in with mix and match tops and light weight top with 3/4 sleeves to go over...74 mature arms are not go to look...
I have 5 pair of jeans... 2 white and 3 different shades of denim
And my fall/winter clothes are 3 really warm and still in good condition cowl neck sweaters...same jeans except the white...4 warm button downs shirts
It has taken me years to get to this point...what a long journey. 🤪😊

Hi Charlotte! Can you move the clothes out of your closet that you don't wear regularly? Maybe put them in another closet, in a vacuum-sealed bag, or in the attic. It will help you focus on your style and everyday wardrobe.
