May I add another reason for sudden, got-to-have-it shopping? Finding clothes that fit you if you have a non-standard body type. I'm very tall (6' 1½"), and online shopping has enabled me to find several sources of smart, not-too-expensive pieces cut just for me. When they announce a sale -- or just a new seasonal launch -- I am there! I have more clothes in my closet now than I have ever had in my life, but at the moment I have no desire to cull them. I'm just so happy that they all fit!

I feel you on this…. I’m also quite tall, but my hourglass is so extreme that my waist is two to four sizes smaller than my bust and hips. And being an H cup…. I never found things that fit in physical stores. But internet shopping appeared and now I have a lot of clothing. I’m proud of myself, though.. I say no to most things now. My latest weakness is tights and when new colors come out I look at what I already have and only get new pairs to make my spring and summer clothing work for winter (ex tights and a sweater with a dress or skirt/too I like). I try to focus on things like tights and underwear if I want to treat myself. They don’t take up much room and I have plenty of everything else!

I am still decluttering my clothes on my way to retirement but I think I have found some good tricks to reduce. I was always saying, I love that, I can’t get rid of it. So whenever I found myself thinking that, I actually wore the clothes. Sometimes I found that there was something off with item, weird fit, uncomfortable and then I remembered why I wasn’t wearing it. So my tip is to wear those sentimental pieces ! It made realize that I didn’t love them as much as I thought… Great video Nancy and I too love seeing you in pink! 🩷🩷🩷

We often need multiple wardrobes to meet different needs. Years ago I had a pregnancy wardrobe I would pull out when needed. Now I have a winter wardrobe and a summer wardrobe. It helps me to pack away what I'm not wearing at the time and bring it out again when needed. It doesn't have to all live in my closet all the time.

Thank you for helping us to rationalize emotionally. I am 64 years old and remember there were clothes for school or work as well as shoes; weekend clothing like church, chores, beach, etc. Shoes were seasonal. White going out, sandals, black patent shoes, etc., the thing is what you chose you had to like as that’s what you would have to wear. All this social media, advertising has created F.O.M.O. and unnecessary debt. I plan for each season. Sometimes something is on the list, don’t buy it and then don’t miss it either. I watch your videos, but have stopped watching some others as I do not want to be incited into buying more.

Here's another buying tip related to shopping for something you've decided you need in your wardrobe. Sometimes you go to all the shops and cant find that item that's just right. Do not buy something that doesn't tick the essential boxes. If the fabric doesnt feel right (I hate too much polyester or acrylic) or the colour is just a bit off or the fit isn't great then it will probably just hang in your wardrobe making you feel guilty anout wasting that money. Just hold on until you do find the right item - maybe revise your budget or try thrift stores. Dont settle for "it's OK, it'll do".

I have a illness that makes my weight fluctuate. I had lost a lot of weight so i waited until i was sure my weight had stabilized before decluttering any of my clothes. I waited 2 years to ensure my weight had not shifted and finally did a huge wardrobe declutter. It felt amazing to have a streamlined closet that was perfect for me. Wellll...Within 3 months of that declutter my weight shifted again and so most of my well curated closet now didn't fit me. It's been 2 years since that happened and I've spent that time reestablishing a new wardrobe to accomodate my weight gain, which is fine, but I really want to declutter again because I feel like I just have too much... but i'm also very 'gun shy" now because of my past situation. It's really quite frustrating to desperately WANT to do something but feeling like I'm going to put myself in a difficult situation again.

Yes, I have too many clothes! Some never worn - one reason is I think I'll need more for a season than I do but then I wear the same favorite things over and over - some things just are right and they get worn; the rest just hangs but I hold onto stuff "just in case." Right now I'm not even going into stores or looking at clothes online. I really don't need that much for my retired lifestyle and only get dressed up for church and the occasional night out or holiday - turns out we really don't need as much as we have...

I’m in the process of building my dream home. While designing the closet I was asked how much clothing I thought I had. Think, how much space do I need for shoes, how much space for dresses, how many drawers vs hanging space etc… it was a real eye opener because I underestimated on everything! In the last year I’ve down sized by more than half. I’m much more aware of what I have, what I need (and don’t!) and it also finally helped me see the patterns of colors, styles and materials I like (and don’t). I wouldn’t call it a capsule wardrobe but I don’t have any oddball pieces, things I don’t feel great in or random one hit wonders anymore.

I’m an avid thrifter with most of my clothes (except shoes, swim, under garments, coats) coming to me secondhand. When I do need to buy new, I only get classic pieces from a few retailers and I mostly shop online. I also have my colors and prints and buy nothing but those. I’m very good at stopping myself. I only splurge at the thrift stores.

Looking for the deals and filling your closet with deals, never wearing a lot of it, doesn’t save you money, it costs you money. Any bargain hunter who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
Buy the best quality you can afford, if it’s on sale, great! You will save money in the long run instead of wasting it and then bemoaning the fact that you are donating unused clothing that you spent your hard earned money on.

So happy to see it isn't just me on this journey. I have cut back my shopping dramatically to the benefit of my bank balance and am now dealing with decluttering. I assign clothes to 3 decluttering categories - sell, recycle, and if I lose a little weight I'd want to wear that again. The recycling has to be mindful and I have found real joy giving good items to young relatives or friends who love vintage clothing and either keep it, share it or sell it. I tend to sell items from sought after brands although lately this has been a very slow way of moving items out. I store items in vaccum bags that I still want to wear but need just a little weightloss to fit properly and review them after weightloss and then apply my method again. I also recycle with companies that source items for thrift stores or shred unuseable clothing and household materials (towels, sheets) for use in other industries e.g upholstery.

Cull, then put the items to go, in an opaque garment bag or suitcase. Put the date on container for 1year forward. That's saved me only twice, but I don't kick myself for donating something I need a few months later. Lots of donations gone, only 2 items rescued from the "Hold' area in garment bag in guest room closet. Relieved my concern about wanting what was just donated.

Best video so far. I have been buying too much. Because of foot surgeries and arthritis, I have had a fear of not being able to find wide shoes that are cushioned enough to prevent pain and sores on my feet. Since I can find almost any size on line, I own a nice variety of shoes but I still feel the emotional compulsion to buy more shoes. It is an irrational emotion that feels like FOMO, but the fear makes my feel like I I will have to go barefoot if i don't buy the next pair of shoes. Of course that won't ever happen.
I have plenty of clothes and I put together outfits with accessories on a seasonal capsule rack as soon as my laundry is done. My problem is making sure I have enough events, errands, activities and hangouts to wear all the fun outfits to. I am ready for a range of weather and activity on any given day. I have had to get rid of old "housework clothes" in order to have enough days to wear the cute, fun outfits. I am getting a lot of milage out of some fun new colors and unlimited combinations...
BUT, I also have the growing sense that having more clothes is making the cost per wear go up because I am wearing each garment fewer times within the gixed 365-day year. Not counting Sadie Hawkins day tomorrow.
I love your insights, style, creativity and sense of fun. WELL DONE.

I know what you mean about footwear. I have flat feet, narrow feet and bunions, so finding shoes is difficult, I generally go for Ecco or Merrell and wear a few to death, only have about 4 pairs, two for winter, two for summer, then two pairs of fancy shoes, not great for the feet, but fit them, so only wear for sitting down on evenings out. Any more and I would feel totally swamped, as a minimalist anyway, but even so, the worry about replacing them is constantly there!

As a fashion aware, environmetally aware 70 year old, I mostly buy "new with tags" from Ebay. I tend to go for private sellers who have bought things that do not suit them and too late to return etc. I have usually tried these things on in the shops beforehand, so know they suit me and fit in the size I am looking for. I stick to brands that suit me, like Hobbs (I am in the UK). Anything that I am not happy with when it arrives (usually non refundable) I take to the charity shop in town. They are always pleased with the items, as we have few clothing shops locally and I bring in good brands for their customers. I find clothes quite reasonably priced this way and don't have the pain of returning things to retailers for refunds, which takes weeks where I live. I only have about 30 items in my wardrobe at any time as I wear this to bits when fashionable and then use them as dusters or put in textile recycling bins. I have lived with a small wardrobe for decades, I just find it suits me to live this way and I hate too many things, especially anything that I know I am not happy with or will never wear again- why keep it, let someone else get the use of it while it is still fashionable and has plenty of wear in it !?

I have too many clothes AND many of them still have the tags on. It is killing me. I want to get rid of them but I think of the money spent and want something in return. Is that wrong? I have clothes that I can part with but there are some that are too hard to just get rid of. What is even worse are the aspirational clothing sizes that I never got to wear and now even if I could wear it tomorrow, I'm too old for it! It's so upsetting. I bought clothes for the "maybe" and then the maybe never happened. It's a form of lying to yourself. I really had no idea how far I'd gone. I really do like the basic clothes and colors. They end up looking the best and they have longevity. I had weight fluctuation and so I have sizes on that end of the spectrum as well. It's sad. It was all some weird coping mechanism that I was blind to.

You really hit a nerve when you mentioned keeping clothes for sentimental reasons. I have a hard time getting rid of clothes I took to Italy almost 11 years ago. Honestly they’re snug so I bypass them and out of style even if they weren’t!

I know what you mean . I have dresses I wore to my kids wedding that no longer fit but I think of the memories attached to them. Time to clean out the closet. It's so hard!!

I love buying second-hand, especially on the Internet. I can look for what I exactly want and save money:)

Yes I have too much of the wrong items. I like your hints and will get busy decluttering. I especially want a core/capsule wardrobe that suits my retirement lifestyle.

You love all your cloth when you live with 4 seasons. They go quick & you can experience all 4 seasons in one day, that's Ohio. So we split 2 seasons you're not using to the sides and right now I have Spring & Summer in the middle.

OMG!!! How many ways can you say women buy too many clothes. You’re a quarter of the way thru your presentations and nothing has been said. Find something else to do.
