It goes to logic that people who live in changing seasons will need more clothes, hence our closets must accommodate for drastic weather fluctuations. We need boots for shoveling snow as well as dressy boots for evening wear. We need summer shoes, sandals, gardening shoes, workout sneakers, dressy shoes, casual comfortable shoes, waterproof shoes for torrential downpours, etc etc Our closets must have winter coats and all the accessories (gloves, scarves, hats). We also need rain jackets, and lightweight coats for autumn and spring. The list goes on and on. That is exactly how my closets get overfilled. It’s not that I don’t wear these item because I do, they sit quietly taking up space in my closets until their season rolls back around.
Thank you! You described my wardrobe. If someone doesn’t live in changing seasons, they can’t understand the need for all the various clothes and shoes. Add to that list, I live on a ranch with livestock :-)
I live in a drastic climate too. However, I’ve simplified my shoe wardrobe. Once I noticed the only thing I got complemented on by both men and women, were colorful tennis shoes (trainers/running shoes/high tops), I decided I was ridiculous for worrying about the rest of my shoes. Beside several pairs of colorful, fun tennis shoes and high tops, I have a pair of snow boots, two pairs of Clark leather shoes for work, 3 pairs of sandals, two pairs of ballet flats, and two pairs of dress shoes.
@@eleanornelson5810 Hi Eleanor. Yes, your wisdom is just the jolt I need right now. I need to simplify. Colorful sneakers need to be added to my closet so that some boring predictable black shoes can make a grand exit. Time for a switch out. Thank you. 😀
I work in a charity shop , if people could see the look of delight when they find an item , at a price they can afford , they would donate more , we had a young boy kitted out for very very little for his first prom night , in a designer suit and shirt and tie , as new , his mum nearly cried with gratitude ,xxxxx it made our day ,
I keep clothes that I no longer fit into but want to! I keep them hoping that I am going to lose weight. I loved how I felt when I did wear them. The clothes I do wear, fit, but I don't like them. It's all causing me to hold on to all of it!!
Thanks for sharing. How do the clothes you're holding onto make you feel now? Are they inspiring you? Or making you feel crummy? Or is your feeling mainly neutral? If neutral, and you have the space... keep the clothes! If the feeling associated with those pieces feels dense and unpleasant... maybe consider letting them go and trust that new items could bring the same joy you once felt in those clothes. 💖
I am in exactly the same boat. I have a too small micro wardrobe for smaller me, whenever I lose weight. Then the clothes that fit, most I do like but some a just blah.
What helped me was to actually go out wearing pieces that I've been hoarding for years. You will soon know if you feel good in it or not as you may feel that its not as nice on as it was in your imagination. When you catch that glimpse of yourself in the mirror in public sometimes you can feel horrified. Some of my stuff was faded and scruffy but I didn't notice as I only wore it in the house.
Mum told me about this when I was young, but I still made that mistake myself on several occasions. The problem is, when we really like something, we wear it a lot and it wears out! But we don't notice.
I discovered this myself in the last month or so. I wore a skirt that I loved, was so unique, and I got so many compliments on it. I felt fabulous in it at home, but once I left, I started feeling very uncomfortable. I wasn't sure why, so I decided to rate everything I wear at the end of the day. If the rating isn't 4.5 or 5 (on a scale of 1 to 5), I go through the whole outfit and each piece to find out why I didn't like it or why didn't I feel comfortable or why I had a lot of anxiety wearing it. It helped me hone in on what I actually like and feel comfortable in. For instance, for the Summer I like midi or maxi skirts or dresses, lightweight with a fitted waist, then drops straight down from the hips. No A-line and no material to get wrapped up in my legs. Turns out the outfit that I didn't feel comfortable in was a tank top and a wrap skirt had an A-line shape. It was a little bit fancier than I like and tended to wind up between my legs (no more polyester!) Loving something on the hanger or when you're at home alone is not necessarily loving it in real life.
@@user-ry1vi1jc7o Thats a great idea. I might try this. The fact that going out in something may not fit the actual surroundings or weather so would be worth noting which occasions it should only be worn for too. Maxi dresses always seem to keep that modesty and work for most occasions.
I once had a beautiful wool tweed jacket that I had sewn myself. When it was no longer stylish, I stopped wearing it thinking that it would "come back" some day. Well, it eventually "came back" (sort of). When I went up to the attic to retrieve it, I tried it on. It felt like a suit of armor. Although such a jacket had become stylish again, fabrics had changed and were much more lightweight while offering the same warmth. I was not as enamored of the old jacket as I thought I'd be. It was put on the giveaway pile. There's no resurrecting the past.
Decades ago I had a book called Color Me Beautiful. It helped me find my color palette and style. It helped me avoid buying things I didn’t wear and my things were interchangeable. Now, retired, I have a new problem. I don’t need clothes for work, I’ve suddenly gained weight and I’m not sure I can lose it, and I don’t go out much. Also, I still love clothes and dressing well. I volunteer just to have a reason to dress. My elderly mother still loved to shop for clothes in her 90s and left behind a huge closet of clothes. I don’t want to do that.
My mom and I read Color me Beautiful in the late 80’s and my mother lived by her season for decades. I recently purchased a copy of this book and successfully eliminated 30% of my closet.
When my elderly mother-in-law died, her wardrobe filled every closet in her large home. Her overwhelming amount of decades of old clothes, is motivating me to edit my wardrobe.
Thank you for the permission, sometimes you need to keep hearing a message until it finally sinks in, you have definitely helped me let go of what is no longer serving me!
You're welcome! I completely agree. I'm often fascinated by how many times I need to hear the same message before I have an aha moment! Be proud of letting go!! 💕
Thank you for saying exactly how I feel. I let some of her words sink in and yesterday I edited/sewed/changed two items I rarely wore and eliminated 8 items. I’m doing it….a little at a time.
Two years ago, my husband passed away. After he died, I bought a fair amount of clothes that just are not me. I think deep down I was feeling that if I looked different, I would feel different. Of course that wasn’t true. There isn’t a shortcut for grief. But I’m telling myself it’s ok to let those things go. I just look at them now and remember how awful I felt then. No one needs that in their closet to confront them every day. Thanks!
@kellywood9590 it’s like we are trying to fill our emptiness with stuff but as soon as the new wears off we’re still empty with a bunch of stuff we really don’t want.
Recently returning from a trip with a limited number of clothing pieces makes want to rethink what I currently have in my wardrobe and what I actually wear. I know the first order of decluttering is my underwear, then all those items that keep being pushed to the back of the closet. I love your videos! I feel like I've been to a therapist who makes me motivated to get my closets in order where I can love and enjoy what I own.
That is the highest compliment!! Thank you! My signature program is called Style Therapy for that very reason. It's all connected. I feel the same way after a trip. It's so interesting how we thrive with a smaller wardrobe when we're away from our closet... and yet we often resist reducing the amount of clothing we own. I'm currently living with a much smaller capsule... and loving it!! Thank you for your comment and your support! 💖
I don't buy clothes often. When I do, I keep them forever because I am very choosy about fabric. I repair them and recycle them when they wear out. I have an everyday denium dress that I bought 25 years ago and still wear. I buy clothing that I can add to or take away from because we have 4 seasons. Most of my "good" clothes were bought 10 or more years ago. Fabrics and construction in recent years are so poor that I try to keep and update what I already have. I wish I had some of the better clothes I gave away before things got to be so cheaply made.
@@Marie-lf8ut I admire you for that and it’s my goal. I love beautiful fabric. I would have loved to live in Japan 100 years ago just for the cloth. But I have to be contented with modern medicine and plenty of food.
The manufacturers of clothing unless expensive seem to be fabrics that will not last many seasons before looking ratty. Also too many clothes have certain holiday themed clothing. How many Halloween themed tops does a person need. The same for kids. It's wasteful.
This is exactly my issue. I am hanging onto clothing items because of the fabric. I am afraid I will never find that hood cotton again and that could be a valid fear. Some of my items are so worn I’m not sure what I could make out of it.
I finally donated a Vintage handsewn black lamb's leather full length coat. I couldn't let it go because it was thrifted and an amazing bargain. Someone else will be thrilled to "find" it, I'm sure. It was gorgeous but I hadn't worn it in several years. In my minds eye, I can still see it but it physically gone now.
I understand completely!! I have also thrifted and released pieces that weren't being utilized and loved by me in hopes of someone else being thrilled to find them!!
I have black, red, leopard print, heavy polyesters, office wear, heels etc and I only enjoy wearing the pink, purple, green, gray, soft, cozy knit, average jane-ish, homebody and outdoorsy type of pieces. 😅 I definitely feel the disconnect.
I hang onto pieces because if I get rid of them I feel I have to replace them with something else and I absolutely, without reservation, abhor shopping for clothes. There’s so much junk on the hangars in the shops - and since I’ve retired I donated all the “monkey suits” and no longer have to adhere to office dress codes. I don’t care what others think of how I’m dressed. It’s so liberating!
I tend to pack those seasonal clothes away, and try and break it down every season.Life changes,we get older, our needs change e.c.t and also remind myself...out with the old
Such a great topic. My issue is “it’s perfectly fine.” But it is oh so freeing to have that space! I try to tap into that feeling and trust the universe that this release it is meant to be.
Exactly! I've also had to learn to quiet the voice that says, 'It's perfectly fine' and instead listen to the part of me that knows there's something better... even the empty space!!
I completely agree except since turning 50 (I am now 62) I have experienced weight fluctuations from size 8 to size 10 and even size 12. I keep losing and gaining the same 10 to 15 pounds. Therefore I have 3 sizes in my closet. I am afraid to get rid of clothes that I might need and have to source again. 😢
I agree! I was searching for this comment and am surprised I didn’t see it a 1000 times! If, right now, I got rid of everything that no longer fits me, what would I wear next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Marilyn- Thanks for your comment. I hear you. I have many clients who experience size fluctuations regularly. I certainly don't suggest getting rid of clothing that's still being worn. If your size fluctuates often, every week or month, I'd offer that you could simply separate your wardrobe into different capsules that work for each size so that it's easy to get dressed when a fluctuation occurs. The main thing to consider is the mental drama involved. The goal is to create a wardrobe that supports you in all areas of your life and for every version of your body. If having all of the various sizes mixed together is creating negative thoughts and emotions when you get dressed, separating them will help. If you don't have any drama about the range of sizes, certainly keep things as is because it's already working! Hope that helps. 💕
Thanks for your comment. As I mentioned in my reply to Marilyn, if you are regularly rotating through all of your wardrobe - regardless of sizes - then definitely keep everything! 💞
Right now i have right under 100 clothing items for four seasons. Everything fits, everything looks nice and none of them are sentimental. I was going into a declutter day today, and after a few weeks watching lots of these kinda videos i ended up only giving up five more items, because i dont like them. The rest i really like and wear around the year. I figured to reach my goal; i will not buy anything new until i have used my clothes until unwearable and only when im down at 60 items i will start switching an item for a new when its time. Naturally i cannot wear all my clothes all the time, but having them visible in my closet its easier to remember for me twitch up my fashion. I did store my winter clothes during the summer and oposite, but now i can fit it all and see it all in my closet, and i really like it! For around 7-8 years ago i probably had 3-400 items of clothing 😂 now its time my journey moves ahead a much much more mindful sense of living as a consumer.
That's great what your doing wearing up I do the same winter just add one top one trousers if needed top up then pack away summer same again only top up hope to not have in the future more then fifty items of clothing for winter maybe forty and less for summer use up everything just what is needed to be replaced and use
If I got rid of everything that doesn’t light me up, I’d have no clothes at all. I can’t even conceive of anything I could wear that make me look and feel amazing, but I love your message.
Hi Gail- You're not alone. I have clients who feel the same way when we start our work together. I'd offer this video as a place to begin... th-cam.com/video/ECsvdt5k0h8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=n_apycz1bmdiNdW8
I’ve been getting more clothes I really love. Trouble is, I’m retired and at home wearing things I don’t mind getting dirty. I’ve had to find a volunteer job where I can wear my clothes. 😂😂😂
the most important connection to hordering stuff is the trauma based beneath. letting go is actually intertwined with fear and and the wish of self protection.
Wow, I love your philosophy of developing a wardrobe that lights you up and how this process can affect other parts of your life. This is not frivolous stuff; something we do everyday, getting dressed, can have such great impact. That alone helps me to give myself permission to make this a priority
I have clothes in my closet that r too small since my daughter was in middle school…she is now 30…all this while I have not let myself buy clothes b/c being a size 12 is NOT acceptable…I was always a size 8-10 and then for the past 15 years a 12…how disgusting it feels to have a “plan” that is always the same…some FUTURE date when I can relax and like my size b/4 I can spend money ….insane I know and I want to thank u for kindly asking us to consider the real cost to you from a psychological perspective…clothes that don’t fit do not inspire! In fact, just the opposite…thanks for this and I will subscribe and like!
Hello, Lisa- Thank you for sharing and subscribing. Sending a hug to you! I completely understand the 'future date' when relaxing and happiness can be ours. We postpone our own joy until we meet certain circumstances. I hope my videos help you ease into a new way... celebrating yourself right now! You deserve to have clothing that fits your today body. 🥰
I love this so much! I think there’s another layer to what may be going on as this is what is going on with me. Over the last five years, so many changes have happened in my life that I have transitioned into a position of not even knowing who I am stylistically anymore. I went from being someone that worked out in the community and attended occasional events where I had to dress up and I bought a lot of beautiful things with that in mind. I am now at home taking care of my dad and my disabled daughter and not working out in the community and it has been a very difficult transition to make letting go of an old life that doesn’t really any longer exist and yet going through some grief in that regard. Almost as if I am waiting for the time when the old life comes back around. As I am not yet sure it won’t!
Thank you for sharing a bit of your struggle. First, feel the grief. Truly feeling and processing those feelings will give you some freedom to define what matters to you in this season with regard to your style. This chapter can include a stylish version of you, but first you need to feel the feelings that come up around letting go of your past life. Sending love.
Having just done a Marie Condo I love this video. It all makes perfect sense. One other trick to find that "80%" comes from Gabe Bult to turn all the hangers round with all the clothes items in your wardrobe and then turn them back as you wear each piece. Make a mark of 3-6 months in your diary and then see how many hangers are still left hanging backwards, meaning unworn items.
I take photos of clothes I have loved and lost - like old boyfriends - no regrets... just fond memories. I am the sort of person who buys beautiful clothes - gorgeous fabrics and colours (but often secondhand). To me, they are "works of art" that should be hung up to be looked at .... but not really worn (especially now I am fatter). We should just wear comfy clothes that feel good. We all have a distorted view of ourselves ... because we want to look like the model who first inspired us to buy the clothing - and we never will.... If Kristen can feel good in her husband's old cricket jumper - then we can feel good in whatever makes us happy.
When I have felt that way, it's because I have been unhappy with my BODY. If this is you, keep stuff which fits you and that you are comfy in, not stuff you can barely squeeze into/flop off of you. If there are things you don't fit into, but you really love, keep them, but packed away, NOT in your cupboard where you have to see them every day. Anything that itches, or irritates you, just get rid of. You won't miss it at all.
@@thatswhatisaid8908fabrics that are comfortable is important. Really do not like polyester fabrics. They make you sweat & do not keep you warm in winter.
I have a ton of clothes, yes because of the seasons, but mostly because i love clothes! I love thrifting beautiful vintage pieces and rocking the heck out of them!❤
Thank you for your wonderful video. I will spend the next 15 minutes removing clothing items from my wardrobe I never wear. Hopefully I shall do this twice more and get some sort of order into my wardrobe plus plenty of empty space too
Literally just been doing this today. I’ve finally been able to take 7 particular items out of my wardrobe that have been unworn for over 7 years, but hold a lot of sentimental value to me. I’ve washed them ready to go into vacuum bags.
I donate to Assistance League. It’s a national organization that raises money to buy new clothing for school children. I also shop there sometimes. They make a great effort not to waste used clothing. Even rags get used. When I was young and broke, my friends and I would shop at Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores. It was great fun. So it’s easy for me to donate thinking that someone might discover my donation.
I struggle to get rid of things that I don't wear they are "almost" right. Last week I donated a good quality barely worn dress because it's just not my colour. I'm still feeling sad even though I hadn't worn in ages (years) 😢 But hoping someone else will get use of it. I've already mentally identified other things in that category
My clothing aren't "pieces," it's just stuff that I am required to wear to look socially acceptable at jobs. The things I enjoy doing are dirty messy activities and I don't think about how I look if I am hiking or gardening or whatever it's only the awful office clothes that I have to wrap up my body as if I'm a present. I think I am going to throw away all my dresses, I am getting older and I just want to be comfortable.... how about when we AGE out of clothing... I don't know what my style is because I'm poor and I hate fashion. I can't afford it anyhow.
Hi Emma- Thanks for your comment. I feel sad after reading your words. I'd like to offer a few coaching questions in case that might be helpful... Would you 'hate fashion' if your financial situation were different? Would you feel the same way about clothing if you loved your job? Could you possibly choose (even from your existing wardrobe) a color or fabric you love and wear that for work? Or could you wear a color you love when hiking or working in the garden? Do you have any thrift stores near you? Or friends/neighbors who you could do a clothing swap with to bring in fresh clothes without spending any money? Sending love. 🫶
I’m retired & find myself putting on my same comfortable clothes daily bc I’m just mainly at home, either working in the yard or just doing basic stuff. I have some nice clothes from when I was a teacher (& have donated a lot as well), but my daily attire is sort of like kids’ clothing: mix & match knit comfy pants & t-shirts from WalMart or similar spots. Wear colors you like & enjoy being you!
@vivianhudacek1556 I love this. I'm recently retired, and have gained a lot of weight. I bought a lot of new, inexpensive stuff very recently. Comfy stuff in colours I like. I think it's time to let go of most of the things I've been hanging onto for 20+ years. Thanks for your comment.
My skinny clothes are colors and classic styles that fit my unique proportions . It took 10 years but I am back in them. I look great and feel fabulous 🎉. And I purged all my baggy fat stuff 😂
Gosh! I've never had clothing with the price tags on them.i have over the yrs got rid of clothes and have often regretted it afterwards. I've got pieces that are over 20 yrs old and I still wear them and they are unique and they get compliments. As I've aged I know longer wear sleeveless or anything that shows my legs . I've been lucky to have remained a size 2 so that helps.
Thanks for this info! I retired 6 years ago and just now letting go of work clothes that I'll probably never want or need to wear again. I'll use some of your thought strategies to look at my other wardrobe pieces to pare down even more. These strategies can be applied to other items in my house also and help me do a little clearing out generally. I'm sure I'll feel clearer after eliminating many things in my house that I've been holding onto but no longer want or need.
Getting rid of clothing to women's refuges/shelters is wonderful if you can. Some of those women have left terrible situations with just the clothes on their backs. Nothing to apply for jobs in, or even to look decent to try and obtain housing.
Wow, your video really inspired me! For the last six months I have been thinking about and wanting to clean out my closet, the task seemed so overwhelming. Your comments really hit home and was just the impetus I needed. I spent a few hours yesterday and today editing my closet. It is now only half full and I feel so much better!
Great video! I declutter ALL the time but never enough to really make a difference. I am inspired and motivated now. A great place to donate anything useable that you are letting go is a group called BUY NOTHING. They are nationwide and each group serves specific towns. I have donated many times and it is very satisfying!😊
As a former fashion designer, My dificulty is looking at meu closet as a collection, and most of the clothes seem like a possibility of new look with what I already have. I must confess I have an attachment, as I haven’t had a closet like my friends in my teen fase.. and this has made me fear of “not having “ plenty in the future. I’ve been working on this subject since 2019 and have donated and sold tons already. But always looking for gems in Thrift stores, my closet is still too much. Thank you for this video ❤
Hi Marcia- Thanks for you comment. I also deal with that fear of lack in the future. What if I need it one day? What if I should keep it just in case? Moving recently made it easier for me to let go of pieces I was saving and not loving or wearing. With limited space, the favorites quickly rose to the top! It sounds like you've been doing great work for the past few years. Keep at it and you'll land on 'plenty'. 🧡
KristenCainStyle - one thing I was stuck on, but decided to get past was the I-won't-be-able-to-replace-it-later fear. My minimizing was also done during a move. The problem is, a couple of years later, it turned out to be mostly true. I only buy natural fabrics, and it's really hard to find even 100% cotton T-shirts or 100% wool coats, etc. Most places sell polyester or mixtures of natural fabrics with garbage like acrylic, etc.
Thank you for this common sense video! I needed to hear it. I’ve been going through my closet, but I’m also going through all my art and crafting supplies and “stuff.” So many things I thought I might get into and bought all the materials and then…. It collects dust. I’m putting myself (almost 30 pounds off so far) and my life on a diet!
I have been going through my closet getting rid of clothes that I do not wear or never worn. I am a bit embarrassed by some of the impulse buys that I have done. I wasted money but I have learned from my mistake
I think you mentioned the most important part of the process... learning from our mistakes. When we decide to edit our wardrobes, we can learn so much from the pieces we rarely wore. That data allows us to make better choices moving forward. You've got this! 💕
I've been thinking on this subject a while, sorting through mind clutter as to what makes me like a piece of clothing. It will take me several runs through it all and the consistent ideas that make a keeper for me is: quality (how new is still looks and is holding up), style (there are certain styles I know I like in pants and tops), color (does the color help me or wash me out). I feel like I forgot something, but this will require me to skim off some through time as it will prove better to wear and decide in real life.
Thank you for such a good video! I changed my style few years ago, now I'm wearing beautiful long bohemian gypsy skirts and tops...and I love it!!! ❤ from Chile!...
I loved this segment. So true. I could identify with so much you mentioned. It’s fun trying to decide what lights me up especially when your lifestyle changes. I’ve gone from reddish brown hair and working to white hair and retirement where I still love getting dressed up but don’t bother and now I teach aquafit and have added a new layer of style. When I switch over or little by little before the season switch I’m going to try to edit and see what happens. My struggle is too much black!
Thank you. I have a skirt that my mom bought me. It’s beautiful but I don’t wear it. I remember the day like it was yesterday. It was over 30 years ago. My mom is now in hospice. I have tried to think of how to wear it, what to do with it. Maybe I’ll see if I can find the photo of me wearing it 30 years ago and frame it. I never wore the skirt more ch maybe 3x but it has the shopping memory it’s so strange how attached I am to this skirt!
that is a lovely attachment. Keeping a single item of clothing with beautiful feelings attached is beautiful & probably healthy. Even if you never wear it. You can feel it.
I have clothes that are from periods of my life when I was, younger, in great shape and in a great place and feeling good about myself……it feels really uncomfortable of letting go of that
I would love to know why I hang on to and keep buying things I don’t love! Things that are just sort of ok for now. Uggg, then I hate everything and none of it matched who I am. It’s like there is a disconnect there.
I hear you. I was in the same situation. It wasn't until I went to a minimalist capsule wardrobe that things changed for me. I shot for Project 333 - where you select and wear 33 items only for three months (I wound up with 50 items for Summer). That number includes 27 items of clothes, and the rest is shoes, handbags, and accessories. When you know you have a limited amount of clothes to choose, you choose your favorites. And you arrange your closet so that you can see every single thing including accessories when you open up your closet. What will happen is that you realiz, Oh I feel great in this, or Oh I feel anxious in this one. At the end of the day, analyze why you didn't feel right in the outfit by really looking at the pieces and the outfit overall. By writing these things down, it's really easy to see a pattern of what you feel good and comfortable in.
Summarize: Changing your think and thought first. Be empathetic. 1.What are the % of clothes you wear? Statistically women is only use 20% of their closet , it’s okay to only hold on and only wear the 20% you love and wear comfortable. - Reason why you hold on: 1.Sentimental. 2.Think you will wear in the future (trend repeat)- worn out, not fit, when , why you keeping it? Is it worth the mental and physicals space. 3. Invested in piece expensive 😢. Sunk cost already or time wasting it. 10:32 4.you don’t have time or rent . =>Don’t keep one that is not contribute thing light you up and is wearing.
Thank you so much for this video. I definitely needed to hear that. My biggest issue is one that you mentioned and it's that I don't want to contribute to more waste. I'm really afraid if I donate my clothes that they are going to end up in the dumpster... The thought of it just makes me feel really sad. I definitely struggle with that...
Thank you for your comment. You're not alone. I hear this from so many clients. I think the key is in beginning to reframe your thinking and take new actions moving forward. I'm going to use your comment as the topic for a future video. Stay tuned... 🧡
@@KristenCainStyle This worried me too, but in the end I decided the people at the op shop had more experience of this than me and I gave a small cash donation with the clothes as a contribution to their skills. It made me feel better.
I try to keep up and actually would need nothing more for the rest of m life, (a young 72) but it becomes overwhelming, and I end up keeping more than I wish I would. Occasionally some of these pieces will pop up again and be worn by me with compliments from others, just inches away from my good will bag…doesn’t help that I live in Florida and bear a fondness for jackets… always remaining new…..
It makes it more difficult to purge clothing when you live in an environment where the weather goes from sweltering hot, to freezing cold, from arid dry, to wet and rainy, such as the Northeast USA. You need coats, clothing and shoes for all the seasons. What to do? It's hard enough to purge one season, but 4?
I keep about 3 different sizes of clothing because my weight has fluctuated over the years. I keep them because buying clothes gives me anxiety. I have lipedema in my legs so just finding clothes for a disproportionate body is hard on top of this I’m 5ft tall so very short. Then my feet are extra wide so shoes are so hard to find. I used to go to Payless shoe source because they had wide width but they closed down so I hang on to all the shoes and some don’t fit from weight gain. I feel my anxiety is warranted. I also worry I may not be able to find clothes again. However I hate that my closet and every drawer is packed full of clothes/ shoes. Sometimes I hate to wash clothes because it’s so cramped getting them put away. Lately I’ve been thinking to pull it all out of the closet and make myself put on or try to put on every piece of it and if it doesn’t fit it must go! I haven’t gotten the courage yet to do it. I do agree hanging onto things affects mental health. This is my driving point for change. Thank you for this video it was helpful❤
Hello and thank you for your thoughtful comment. Given what you've shared, I can understand why shopping for new clothes creates lots of anxiety. I agree that a good closet clean-out could help with the feelings of frustration when trying to get dressed or put away laundry. Maybe start by removing the clothing that doesn't fit right now. Pack up those pieces for a future time. If your weight fluctuates daily or weekly, you could separate your wardrobe into categories based on fit for changes in your body so that all of the same size clothes are together and easy to find for that 'body'. If you can purge the definite 'no's, it could make the whole process of getting dressed feel better! 💖 And I miss Payless also!! I remember going there often with my kids and always finding something for me as well!!
That 80 percent is not true with me. I live with 4 seasons in Ohio. Sometimes winter's are so bad you DON'T get a chance to wear your stuff. Sometimes we can have all 4 seasons in one day or one week. Closet is split in 4 seasons, 2 on back sides & Spring & Summer in the middle. My closet is normal size.
@@tammygarrett9261 I’m with you. Some winters go by with hardly an inch of snow here and there so we don’t need the heavy snow boot, while other winters are so snowy that snow boots are the only safe way to walk outdoors. How many good shoes have you ruined by walking in salty dirty slush? I know I have.
I never wore the skirt many times maybe 3x but it has the shopping memory it’s so strange how attached I am to this skirt! But it also comes with that energy of what do I do with this! Every time I see it hanging in the closet.
Framing a photo of you wearing the skirt sounds like a wonderful way to capture the memories without having to keep the skirt in your closet. You could also consider making a pillow out of the fabric so that you can enjoy it without wearing it. Sending love to you in this time.
Thanks! I do work with women all over the world. My services are almost entirely virtual. Details are linked in the descriptions. Hopefully, my videos are helpful if working together doesn't fit for you. 💖
True! This is one of the main reasons that most of my wardrobe is secondhand. I find better quality pieces, at better prices when shopping resale. And... there are brands like Quince and Everlane that make quality clothing at fair prices.
The 20% I wear aren’t the ones I love or that “light me up”. The ones that light me up are the ones I never wear. When I go to donate them I try them on and love them. Those clothes are how I want to dress, but don’t.
This is a super common struggle. What if you challenged yourself to wear 'those clothes' one day a week. I follow an account on IG (Cheryl / @_ifitstuesday_ ) and she gets really dressed at least every Tuesday. Then you might begin to shift from the 20% that doesn't light you up. Good luck! 💘
Kristen, are you also an artist? Are those paintings yours? Thanks for the permission to let stuff go...I am still editing/culling my closet. Happy 4th of July. 🇺🇸
I am not an artist. :-( I actually thrifted both paintings seen in my videos. I literally fell in love with them from across the room on two different outings. I will have them framed at some point. My dad painted a bit later in his life and I cherish the pieces I have from him. The letting go is such a practice and a process. And thankfully, it gets easier the more we do it. Good luck! 🥰
I keep things that I think I will fit into again. Honestly, I am working on losing weight, so I probably will because they are only one size difference. However, I have donated some of them because they are out of style.
One reason why most of my wardrobe goes unworn is because of the pandemic. So I turned to leggings and t-shirts. And that's what I typically wear. It's very handy because I do a lot of walking and simply work from home with very little contact from others. So it's very comfortable. I keep all this other stuff in case I start dating again or simply need nicer clothes for going out. But the pandemic has ended, and I still don't wear this stuff for the most part. What can I tell myself to make my wardrobe more compact? The thing is, I have the space for all of this stuff, so I just close the closet door and not think about it... Is this affecting my energy levels?
Thanks for your comment. Only you can know if the unworn pieces are affecting your energy. Do you feel overwhelmed or guilty (or another negative feeling) when you see the unworn clothes? If not, there's nothing wrong with keeping everything.
Very interesting points. I'm wondering if there's a sheer number of items that are optimal and a number (300?) that is too many? Project 33 says 33 items. At what point do we know if we simply and likely have too many clothes?
Are you a Bob Ross painter? I notice you have several oil paintings in your area. I paint Bob Ross style landscapes. It’s was therapeutic for me. My lifelong depression went away after I started painting. Thanks for your style tips.
No, I'm not a painter. My dad painted a bit in his later years. I have a few of his oils framed in my home. The art behind be was actually from a thrift shop. I saw it from across the room and had to have it!! It's now hanging in my living room. Thanks for watching.
I think seven days a week seven tops or no more than 14 blouses included evening tops you don't need more than seven camisoles etc two pairs of night trousers or skinnys for pair of leggings for day two pairs skinnys for day wear
Serious question here: is this type of minimalist wardrobe meant to be replaced at the end of the season? Having few pieces means constant wear and washings so they’d wear out at end of season and some might survive a second season of constant wear? Is this a way to always have a new wardrobe each year? We “all” tend to buy some new things each season anyway…
Thanks for your question. No, I definitely don't mean to imply that our wardrobe should need replacing every year. It should not! I believe in a collection of items you love and wear often. With proper care, most nice quality pieces will last for many seasons. The goal is to have enough clothing to rotate through and get dressed with ease. Too few pieces could result in over-wear and a shorter life for those items.
I believe winter put aside for summer wear up over four years each season winter summer worn out wear round the home only buy what you wear and like couple tops restock on what you need winter you need two evening shoes two pairs boots ankle and full length two pairs of sneakers one pair walking boots two skirts two dresses four leggings two pairs skinnys then you wear them up summer just add couple tops to what you like then put summer stuff away at least wearing up each summer before buying unessary
Yes. I do believe that you should have clothes you like that fit your 'today' body. So if your body changes often, that means having capsules in two sizes. That way getting dressed is easy and drama-free no matter what size works that day.
It goes to logic that people who live in changing seasons will need more clothes, hence our closets must accommodate for drastic weather fluctuations. We need boots for shoveling snow as well as dressy boots for evening wear. We need summer shoes, sandals, gardening shoes, workout sneakers, dressy shoes, casual comfortable shoes, waterproof shoes for torrential downpours, etc etc
Our closets must have winter coats and all the accessories (gloves, scarves, hats).
Add to that list, I live on a ranch with livestock :-)
here in CT have same problem
I live in Sweden and this is my problem too. So many drastically different weather changes requiring very different clothes, shoes, etc.
@@eleanornelson5810
Hi Eleanor. Yes, your wisdom is just the jolt I need right now. I need to simplify. Colorful sneakers need to be added to my closet so that some boring predictable black shoes can make a grand exit. Time for a switch out. Thank you. 😀
I work in a charity shop , if people could see the look of delight when they find an item , at a price they can afford , they would donate more , we had a young boy kitted out for very very little for his first prom night , in a designer suit and shirt and tie , as new , his mum nearly cried with gratitude ,xxxxx it made our day ,
Oh, I love this so much!! 💙
Of course, you can just keep the ones you love the most or ones too expensive to replace, and buy the rest new when you lose the weight.
I'm hearing you, sister!
I was going to write something very similar did you sort the clothes or lose the weight?
I am in exactly the same boat. I have a too small micro wardrobe for smaller me, whenever I lose weight. Then the clothes that fit, most I do like but some a just blah.
What helped me was to actually go out wearing pieces that I've been hoarding for years. You will soon know if you feel good in it or not as you may feel that its not as nice on as it was in your imagination. When you catch that glimpse of yourself in the mirror in public sometimes you can feel horrified. Some of my stuff was faded and scruffy but I didn't notice as I only wore it in the house.
Absolute truth!
It was a little bit fancier than I like and tended to wind up between my legs (no more polyester!)
Loving something on the hanger or when you're at home alone is not necessarily loving it in real life.
@@user-ry1vi1jc7o Thats a great idea. I might try this. The fact that going out in something may not fit the actual surroundings or weather so would be worth noting which occasions it should only be worn for too. Maxi dresses always seem to keep that modesty and work for most occasions.
Great idea then you will get rid of you don't like them
I once had a beautiful wool tweed jacket that I had sewn myself.
Color Me Beautiful is so helpful in choosing new clothes as you already know what colour suits you. I loved that book. Thanks from Australia
Thanks!
I'm so sorry for your loss, Kelly. 💛
@kellywood9590 it’s like we are trying to fill our emptiness with stuff but as soon as the new wears off we’re still empty with a bunch of stuff we really don’t want.
Very insightful. My condolences. I hope you're doing okay now.
I discovered buying used clothes from a brand I love on EBay. I like the good quality fabric and style.
@@Marie-lf8ut I admire you for that and it’s my goal. I love beautiful fabric. I would have loved to live in Japan 100 years ago just for the cloth. But I have to be contented with modern medicine and plenty of food.
@@lillianbarker4292what is the name of this brand on eBay
Ooh, this! Seems like maybe it's time to explore your wardrobe and edit out what's no longer serving you? Good luck!
Wow! I love this. It sounds like you've done lots of work to edit your wardrobe to a size that's manageable and effective for your life! Bravo!!
Yes! Thank you!
Size 12 isn’t disgusting…
Great tip! Lots of my clients use this hanger switch to gauge what they're actually wearing.
It’s so hard when you don’t feel like you don’t like anything
I love thrifting beautiful vintage pieces and rocking the heck out of them!❤
Totally agree!!
If clothes make you feel that happy have fun with your wardrobe.
Thank you for your wonderful video. I will spend the next 15 minutes removing clothing items from my wardrobe I never wear. Hopefully I shall do this twice more and get some sort of order into my wardrobe plus plenty of empty space too
Wonderful! That makes me SO happy! Good luck with your edit and enjoy the new-found space! 💘 Thanks for your kind words.
Literally just been doing this today. I’ve finally been able to take 7 particular items out of my wardrobe that have been unworn for over 7 years, but hold a lot of sentimental value to me. I’ve washed them ready to go into vacuum bags.
Bravo!!! Great work! 💖
My daughter helped me. I am down to 1" between hangers! Crazy but good.
Great job!

My skinny clothes are colors and classic styles that fit my unique proportions . It took 10 years but I am back in them. I look great and feel fabulous 🎉. And I purged all my baggy fat stuff 😂
I love this message and the psychology of decluttering is important BUT all of this could have been said in 10 minutes. Thanks!
Sometimes repetition is necessary to enhance the subject for differing degrees of resistance. Me!
Thank you for your comment! Great work!
Hi Marcia-
Thanks for you comment. 🧡
Check out Dana White's "container concept". It changed everything for me.
Thanks! Good luck with the editing. You've got this!!
Thank you so much!! I'm glad I found your video. I tend to hoard my clothes because of sentimental value but now I made the decision to just let go!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you. I've finally cleared out my wardrobe and I've got simple basic clothes with scarves and accessories handy too. Great advice.
Thanks for watching! Great work!!
Thank you!!
I have a piece seventeen years now,it's nice and looks vintage with lil frills.
This is awesome!!
I have clothes that are from periods of my life when I was, younger, in great shape and in a great place and feeling good about myself……it feels really uncomfortable of letting go of that
I often post items on our community website that is free…a gifting site and a way to meet people in your community.
Thank you for permission!!! Let the curating begin!!!!!
Enjoy the process!
Thank you Kristen, this was a great video! 💕
You are so welcome! Thank you!! 🌺
Summarize:
Changing your think and thought first.
4.you don’t have time or rent .
I'm getting rid of my showy stuff because I feel more comfortable in modest pieces. I give up with trends.
Ohhhhh you have stirred something in me this morning!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for this amazing video. You have inspired me to go Do the sort out.
Good luck!! Thank for your kind words.
So helpful!!! Thank you, Kristen!
Very true! I lived outside of Philadelphia for many years. Several different 'capsules' can be helpful and edit as each season changes.
You spoke to me definitely....I'll try your suggestions

Real thanks for your generosity and the valuable information you provide us that made a difference in my thinking and thus in my life❤
Thank you for your kind words.
I wish I could have you help me.. loved listening to your video
Thanks! I do work with women all over the world. My services are almost entirely virtual. Details are linked in the descriptions. Hopefully, my videos are helpful if working together doesn't fit for you. 💖
What about the fact that clothes that are affordable today are not the same quality as in the past?
True! This is one of the main reasons that most of my wardrobe is secondhand. I find better quality pieces, at better prices when shopping resale. And... there are brands like Quince and Everlane that make quality clothing at fair prices.
Pack out of site till winter refresh what's needed
The 20% I wear aren’t the ones I love or that “light me up”. The ones that light me up are the ones I never wear. When I go to donate them I try them on and love them. Those clothes are how I want to dress, but don’t.
This is a super common struggle. What if you challenged yourself to wear 'those clothes' one day a week. I follow an account on IG (Cheryl / @_ifitstuesday_ ) and she gets really dressed at least every Tuesday. Then you might begin to shift from the 20% that doesn't light you up. Good luck! 💘
I finally got rid of my dull clothes I wear at home most days, and I upgraded to nice colored tops and well fitting pants or jeans.
Really helpful video thank you appreciate your guidance 🙏 ❤
You are so welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful. 💖
Good luck! 🥰
Lovely helpful ideas...thank you❤❤❤
Will you do a video on packing tips and outfit? Ideas for packing? Or do you have one already?
I have a really old one. I'm due to make a new one... just haven't travelled lately. I'll add it to my list of topics. Thanks!
I actually have a few... if you search 'packing' on my channel, you'll see them all. :-)
Helpful video. Very relatable! Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
♥️thank you for this
My pleasure. Thank you for watching. 💕
Good video thanks letting go means less clutter
I keep things that I think I will fit into again. Honestly, I am working on losing weight, so I probably will because they are only one size difference. However, I have donated some of them because they are out of style.
So encouraging xxxThank You❤
One reason why most of my wardrobe goes unworn is because of the pandemic.
Thanks for this video
Most welcome. 💕
Very interesting points. I'm wondering if there's a sheer number of items that are optimal and a number (300?) that is too many? Project 33 says 33 items. At what point do we know if we simply and likely have too many clothes?
Great question. I'd suggest checking out this video...

Luv your paintings
Thank you! I do, too. They are thrifted!!
When do we get to the part about HOW to achieve this?? I’m already a believer in this i am just stuck
MV GIVEAWAY
My three words would be classic, casual, easy. I love the way you help us to dress the way we want to, to look our best.
I think seven days a week seven tops or no more than 14 blouses included evening tops you don't need more than seven camisoles etc two pairs of night trousers or skinnys for pair of leggings for day two pairs skinnys for day wear
Great approach 🎉
Thank you!
You’re lovely and brilliant!❤
You're kind! Thank you.
What do you do if your weight fluctuates? Does one buy for bigger sizes and smaller sizes?
Yes. I do believe that you should have clothes you like that fit your 'today' body. So if your body changes often, that means having capsules in two sizes. That way getting dressed is easy and drama-free no matter what size works that day.
@@KristenCainStyle thank you so much, it’s a never-ending battle for me☹️
