I really like basic tutorial like this. It's not flashy like drawing car without guideline but it I really help me understand how artist see 3d form in their mind. thank you so much and hope there will be more tutorial like this.
i am guessing you are dissing Gi, he actually does draw lines when he is actually teaching but a lot of videos of him on youtube are demos sort of like carnival tricks and get more views because people are amazed just like watching a monkey riding a bicycle. This channel is gem for me too.. Scott Robertson used to sort of help but he now mostly does showcase sort of thing for selling his books and sketchbooks.
Thank you @ecceptor, the visual library series was particularly difficult so I wanted to make a tutorial that was a bit slower and more focused on fundamentals
You explain it so much better than any other resource i found i think it just the format(video) that enable artist like me to see how it done for me that give so much more.
If i had your videos back in high school, I wouldn´t be at this job anymore. I swear I will retire once I have mastered the fundamentals and will voyage into the depths of art
your videos are truly a blessing when i get a job i will be sure to support you on patreon im also planning on buying your gumroad courses soon seriously these videos are extremely helpful thank you
I swear you can't find any good art channel in whole youtube i think And this james guy is awesome.I just learned persprective in one day buy watching all his video.which i ain't able to learn in last 2 year.hats off to you. ❤❤❤❤💓💓💓💓
the first step you did here, putting those blue loops around the form to indicate a plane, i call that step 'rubberbanding' lol because its essentially like what happens when you wrap an elastic rubber band around any object
absolutely. you can break down arms, legs, torso, and basically anything in the human body into mechanical, basic shapes. the only difference is you probably won't be using a ruler. the process becomes much more tedious when drawing figures though
You channel is awesom, and you are really good, the only thing I do not understand is why I keep seeing amazing artists without an artstation profile...
I get mentally exhausted just watching this,i m focused and trying to understand ,that's why..It's a big downer for me that i'm 15 and romanian ->trying to learn in a foreign language it s pretty hard..But i don't give up,it really makes me understand the idea of dimensions put on paper and manipulate objects in 3D.Thanks for such a great explanation in your videos
Beyond my ability right now, but it makes so much sense! Thank you for this series and the explanations. I’ll be going through these until I’ve got it down!
5:18 I do not understand how the line that cuts inward does not correspond to any vanishing point, unless there are more than two, because if you extend the line that makes "the cut inward" it does not lead to any vanishing point. I hope someone could help me
Excelente el uso de la parte descendente en la Obertura 1812, no pueda pensar en mejor representante del romanticismo y artista con piezas mas conocidas que el mismo Tchaikovsky.
The demonstration 1 & 2 have really light sketches. It's kinda hard too see on my phone!! By any means would you be able to improve that??? Please !!!!
This stuff is ridiculously helpful. Thank you so much. Also, how do you manage to draw accurate lines that slowly? to get non jagged lines on my tablet I kinda have to speed through it or it just ends up looking wobbly. But being fast also kills some accuracy. Would you have some sort of suggestions as to mitigate this? Are you using something like Lazy Nezumi by any chance?
also I'm not using lazy Nezumi, but I did edit out the couple of tries before the successful ellipse. Digital ellipses will always be much harder than traditional
+moderndayjames I just tried it. The sheet of paper offered too much resistance for my comfort, plus im a little iffy about taping it to my tablet so it doesnt move about, but the tip about ghosting over the lines worked like a charm. Thank you so much and I have to say watching your videos has improved my work considerably and I look forward to whatever you will be putting out next. :)

thx a lot for sharing this with us , i think that you're one of the fewest that share this perspective lessons on internet i can anderstand a bit what you're doing but will i understand better with time ? i mean will i understand how to put this plans in my drawings with time ?
can you do some videos focusing on organic forms as opposed to hard surface. i see everybody asking for this everywhere. would probably get a lot of attention as there are not any videos that do it very well. thanks enjoy your videos!
what is out there is mostly just contour lines, which is effective, but leaves people wondering how to do the much more organic forms like they see coming out of student work at fzd. it's the gap between scott robertson and feng zhu for lack of better words. the other thing that is not out there is a really detailed explanation of how one controls the "camera" to get the exact view they want. thanks
hey man is there any book or any recommended source to learn form manipulation and awareness better? like in detail and depth cuz am really fascinated by the subject so.......... and dude your channel is a god send for any self taught artist at any level tryin to grow thank you
Hey, Thanks for the video, do you use any stabilisation while drawing digitally? (wondering if I could solve the problem with not being able to draw straight lines accurately with this)
lol I have been drawing without stabilization for so long that I have forgotten that stabilization exists in digital, having a pulse in traditional is easier than in digital, I forgot that stabilization exists for that
yoo, thank u so much for doing this videos, everything makes more sense now hahaha, although i would like to know what exactly is what you are drawing lol
I don't draw using that many guidelines when I illustrate, however, when learning to sketch products and manmade objects it's really beneficial to learn how to do so

Agree but did the first example but had to skip to number 3 cause it's hard on paper and pencil (I started from 6 -1 by accident so yeah)
Instablaster...
i salute your generosity .. i was planning to improve my drawing and I found a Master like you.. Lord Bless you ...

why do i learn so much from here rather than my uni

Great job, I love to see people drawing mechanical stuff, for me is pretty difficult but Im going to practice more.
You explain it so much better than any other resource i found i think it just the format(video) that enable artist like me to see how it done for me that give so much more.
im pouring hours into learning perspective and just as i was going to get tired of it, you made it seem fun again
If i had your videos back in high school, I wouldn´t be at this job anymore. I swear I will retire once I have mastered the fundamentals and will voyage into the depths of art
linework on point dude!! really enjoyable to watch!
@song cheack not really, you can see that the lines are not perfectly straight. I do practice this kind of stuff in digital so I know it's freehand.
I'm sensing some mechanical engineering vibes here...
same principle

thank you for your reply 😍😍😍
i really love your channel . i have seen a lot of drawing tutorial channel but your channel is really helpful to me .
thanks for making all the videos i would have had to make to show them to my students. Excellent material, thanks a lot.
Woah. I am learning something very interesting from this. Especially that mirroring thing.
Dude you gained 4K this week
You must be an industrial designer!
the first step you did here, putting those blue loops around the form to indicate a plane, i call that step 'rubberbanding' lol because its essentially like what happens when you wrap an elastic rubber band around any object
it is so satisfying watching you draw
thanks a lot James for the tutorials you are doing. If you do more of them I'll be happy to look at them, even if the material is repetitive.
For those curious: The pen he's using is the Zebra F-301 Ballpoint Pen (0.7mm I'm assuming)
Can you use this method (regular sketching industrial) for sketching human figures?
absolutely. you can break down arms, legs, torso, and basically anything in the human body into mechanical, basic shapes. the only difference is you probably won't be using a ruler. the process becomes much more tedious when drawing figures though
Thanks Moderndayjames your lessons help me a lot on my art studies!:)
Your tutorials change the way I face perspective! Please go on!
You made my sketching journey very much easy.
These usage of perspective is insane
You channel is awesom, and you are really good, the only thing I do not understand is why I keep seeing amazing artists without an artstation profile...
I really wish I were able to see your past videos which are now set to be private videos. But thanks for uploading these, James.

Great to see a young ambitious artist dealing with the challenges; you will do fine. Keep on keeping on..
@@Danman4u2 thanks!

@@pauljerome01 welp,i think i progressed quite a fair amount, still interested? I can send u my artstation

Keep these coming! I’d love to learn how to draw slick industrial engineering-esque robots and vehicles

place a sheet of paper over your tablet if you're using digital. Also ghost over the lines before placing them!

Hi James... do you provide any blended resource... i.e. pdf downloads? (for these examples I mean). Thanks for this... very good tutorials.
not yet, but once the book is released there will be a companion to all of the content on here :D
you put effort into your videos. it makes me sad that i merely just put it on to listen to in the background while i'm drawing.
Whatever use you get out of it is good as far as I'm concerned! Thanks for tuning in
Somebody help...
I’m dying
What software do you use
anyone any resources like (textbooks)to learn this stuff? n i heard James was in medical field when did he pick up mechanical engineering classes
the most complete book on this topic is Scott Robertson's How to Draw book. the information is very similar to James' videos, just more extense
What software is this
Thanks 🙏
Magnificent!
Which software plz tell
Your videos are masterpiece. Do you use Photoshop to make this one or others? Im asking cause i teach in a school
Awesome ma maaannn!!
Dont worry about the skits, use the money for more practical ends
awesome! Thanks!
At 00:34 your voice and statement set off “Siri” in my phone and she/it makes a random search ha ha! Anyone else have this issue? I does it everytime.
How many hours do you study each day James? how many hours have you studied the human head? and body?
I study ~8 hours/day, however a big part of my studying is now teaching and creating these videos
I have a question. Let's say I learn all this , do I have to do all these lines every time I want to draw the object?
I don't draw using that many guidelines when I illustrate, however, when learning to sketch products and manmade objects it's really beneficial to learn how to do so
ty my master
you should give home works like Proko does
I do provide homeworks in the associated discord server!

Please, do a lesson - how to draw a landscape.
It would be awesome if your videos had subtitles in spanish, please!
