How to paint over Chrome, black out your ride

  • In this video I paint all my chrome bits. Most new cars come with a heap of chrome parts like grill, mirror covers ect.
    The basic process is to sand, prime and paint.
    You can use a spray gun or a spray can to do the job.
    If using 2k paint please do it with a good spray mask and in a well ventilated area with dust extraction.
    Here is a video using the 2K clear in a can.
    • 2k Clear in a spray can
    Here you can find all the products used. (Australia)

      @@lenjames Well most cars are kind of sporty, so I don't think chrome works. Just my opinion. It's obviously nice to many or car companies wouldn't still be making it, but you still see a ton off chrome deletes via vinyl, paint, plastidip etc. and so many that have the chrome wish they didn't. I think there can be a balance on certain cars I suppose.

    Why did you use etch primer over adhesion promoter, is that the same as using a regular primer since the adhesion promoter base layer would inhibit any etching properties of the etch primer?

    • @AIHurrell
      @AIHurrell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the etch primer also acts like a normal primer. The adhesion promoter will help the etch primer stick to the plastic, as well as give a black base to hopefully hide stone chips when they happen

  • @chevy-is-a-good-boy
    @chevy-is-a-good-boy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This level of quality can't be achieved without the right tools & skill. Pay the money & have a body shop do it right the first time, rattle cans can't give you a proper factory finish & definitely won't withstand stone chips. Sans an airgun/skill, don't try this at home.

    If you were able to rough up the surface sufficiently with just a Scotch pad, then those parts CANNOT be chrome. Chrome is extremely hard and even the toughest abrasive papers will barely touch it. I would suspect they were actually aluminium, probably applied by vapour deposition (like headlight reflectors). With chromed plastic parts, IT IS necessary to remove the chrome before painting the raw plastic as paint simply won't stick to chrome, since it is so smooth. If they were aluminium coated, then fair enough, the ally can be roughed up and painted, though I would argue you'll get a better finish by removing it (oven cleaner) and painting the plastic. th-cam.com/video/CDF3A3xUYeY/w-d-xo.html
