@@idonthaveavalidnamename8058 Before lubing the stabs. I tried it on my lubbed stabs, and I had to go through the tedious process of cleaning and drying the stab stems before modding, just like what was shown in this video.
I've literally spent every night for an entire week trying to tune a set of stabs with little success. They are the most infuriating things, yet when I watch some famous streamers do stabs they often just chuck some 205g0 on the wires and it sounds perfect, no special mods or anything. I've never experienced it that easy in the 2 years I've been doing keyboards... :/
@@Zamm1n I'm fairly certain that sometimes they just make it seem like they got the stabs done up 100% percent perfect. The holee mod does make a huge difference tho. If you haven't tried it, you really need to give it a go. I just built a tofu 60 with holee modded stabs, and by far its one of the best sounding setups I've done so far.
be warned: holle modding zeal stabs can result in a very mushy break in period due to the reduced space in the stem compared to durock v2s. To accelerate the break in process, I recommend extra time to be spent flattening the bandaid to the stem, and also pre-soaking it with whatever lubricant you are using on the wires (of course, with the bandaid already installed... or else the adhesive won't work)
I made the same discovery! I just happened to see some medical tape in the dollar store and realized it was the exact same material. It saves SO much time and money to just buy it that way.

Hamaji, thank you so much for doing this tutorial. I tried doing this several months ago going off of just written instructions and failed miserably - so I gave up because I got frustrated. But, I decided to revisit the mod and found your video... now I cannot stop pressing my beautiful spacebar! I had a tick on the right side of my space bar, even after lubing and straightening out my stab wires. You've earned a sub from me, hands down!
Thank you very much for doing this video on the holee mod. I thought my boards sounded decent before. But after trying it out on all the stabs for 2 of my hotswap boards (NK65 EE and a 60% alu case), my boards sound SO MUCH better! I never knew my boards could make such sounds before, its like unlocking the potential that I never knew existed out of these boards. The holee mod removes that annoying metallic ticking sound that is produced when the metal stab wire hits the stabiliser stem when we push down on the key. I had thought my quality everglide screw in stabs didn't produce any ticking sound. But upon closer sound comparison with my holee modded stabs. I DID notice a subtle ticking with the screw in stabs that I never really paid attention to before. After holee modding all my everglide screw in stabs, it resulted in the stab keys having a much more muted, more homogeneous sound profile as compared to the other normal keys. When I do a typing test, the entire keyboard sounds smoother, as I can't tell the difference in sound when I press on a spacebar, a shift key or a normal key. The typing sounds and experience has become so much more satisfying, that I'm buying desoldering tools to desolder all my other boards to holee mod all the stabs moving forward.
Using the right bandaid and a good pair of small scissors makes this a lot easier. Also I found it easier to cut the bandaid by peeling the cover off, turning it 90 degrees and putting it back on. That way you can cut the bandaid without the scissors sticking but you can still peel off the cover since it will stick out past the ends of the bandaid.
Holee Modded my stabs for the first time using your video and it was hands down the easiest to follow out of other stab how-to’s I’ve watched. The clear, simple instructions and up close footage was super useful. Thanks for the video!

So instead of putting the tape inside the housing itself, I wrapped 1 layer of duct tape around each end of the wire, being careful to keep it only 1 layer thick so I can insert the wire back into the housing.
Very cool! Tip for the holle mod: insert the bandaid the other way and catch it with the tweezers on the other end, and pull. this worked a lot better for me. obviously it depends on your tweezers size.

thank u this really helped me it took me like 20 mins because its so hard to fit the band aid in the hole but at the end the holee mod actually solved the problem
I think the issue with these methods is longevity. The metal bar is constantly in contact with the band-aid/fabric. Which means friction, fraying resulting in a hole. The fabric pads are very, very thin and aren't gonna last very long compared to lube, which you can just apply them when it dries out.
Thank you so much for this video I did this yesterday and my Durock V2 stabs are SO nice now :) totally worth it and I kinda even got the hang of it after the 2nd stabilizer :)

0:57 Thanks for actually doing a tools and parts list instead of just assuming we'll have them or getting us to go through the whole video noting down parts or something. Also I think the plasters can be medical tape and I was going to say aluminum tape but apparently 1:11 You need some cushioning not just extended hard surface which is what aluminum tape is for although perhaps if you just want 1 bit of medical tape and no more cushioning you might but a layer or two of aluminum tape on first (or last? I think first so it isn't just a tower of tape and so it has a solid foundation) for a more snug fit. 2:19 So basically you ideally want a flat bottom on stablisers in the first place but if you dont have that then clip them and possibly sand them/nail file them if they're still not flat? The testing aswell damn, really good, I will put this comment in the same folder as a readme for this video.
IMPORTANT: Make sure your bandaid is not that thick! If it's even just a bit too thick, it will cause the stabs to become incredibly mushy, and makes the bandaid almost impossible to completely remove from the stems, making it pretty much irreversible. Use medical tape if you have it, since that probably the best thickness for this.
Just did this mod. haven't assembled the keyboard yet. The spacebar is too goddamn satisfying now. Upgrading from cherry stabs to durock and applying this mod worked wonders!
Thoughts on the holee mod vs generous dielectric grease? I imagine one main advantage is that the holee mod will last a lot longer and dielectric grease may need to be re-applied. And just in case someone misinterprets what I'm saying: I'm saying dieletric grease instead of holee mod, not both at the same time.
For people that want to know: I've been using my stabilisers with the dielectric grease mod for over 12 months, and haven't felt the need to add more. Once you get them sounding good from the start, with decent stabilisers; it's unlikely that you'll have to reapply more in my opinion.
@@Citex61 You can use both if you want. Though you'll probably have to break them in. I say; try just the lube first, to see if you feel like you need the holee mod.
Thanks for the great guide. I'm currently building my first keyboard and this helped a lot! Also, nice camera work. Hard to get clear shots with such small subject matter.
This is awesome, the first time I've seen this particular mod. I'm going to give it a try today on a keyboard I'm building. However, I wonder about the longevity of this mod. An unlubed or traditionally installed stabilizer with lube alone can last many years with everyday use. Will the bandaid piece degrade or become gunked up in some way over a relatively short period of time? Do you have any keyboards you've done this with that have been in use for a year or more?
Just tried on my GK61XS, just in case - it worked flawless - a bit tricky at first but even some clipIn stabs are more than okay. THANKS never tried it before ;D
i like polyken gaffers tape more than fabric bandaids. its basically the same material with stronger adhesive and youre getting way more for your money compared to bandaids.
The ultimate solution to meaty or attling stabilisers are Costar stabiliser period. Costar stabiliser feel smooth to press and depress, with no room for meatiness. It's also much more forgiving for pressing at edges of keycap than Cherry style can. And for the lubing, you only need to lube/oil the 2 contacts of wire, that's with the mounts and with the stabilisers insert, much more direct and effective lubing which last well over time.
be ware: You should be very sure about the bandade you are using. My first try at this mod took over four times as long, just because I used the wrong bandade type! You should use the ones that have a similar texture as medical tape. I found they are the least finicky. (Medical tape also works)
wow! I've tried reassembling and relubing the stablizers a ton and nothing would fix the spacebar rattle on one side.. however the Holee mod solves it all!!!! THANKS SO MUCH Hamaji! Will post a sound test soon and you can be the judge of that! ;)
My spacebar has been ticking for months and I finally decided to do the holee mod, I was too lazy to do it before. And holy even tho it's extremely scuffed, the unbalanced muted sound still sounds better than extremely ticking sound. Please do it it's worth it
Separating the down motion (key compress) and key return (key rebound sound) with longer pause would make the sound test so much better and this review perfect. We all know that o-ring will silent the compression of the key, but how to silent key rebound? Well done.
pro tip, the bandaid needs to be really thin, I'm talking almost toothpick thin. It was my first time assembling stabs as well. the holee mod added quite a harder element to my experience haha, but well worth it!
Thank you. My Keychron k2v2 75% board has been amazing... except the space bar rattle. It was the only thing that has prevented the board from being perfect.
Finally did it. It was time consuming but it was worth. I test it with band aid but it was too mushy so I ended up doing it with medical tape and it was way better! I really hope the adhesive will stay in place 😬🤞
Thank you so so so much, I was getting so frustrated that my spacebar was rattling and then I did this, It frustrates you a little bit while doing it but it's so much more worth it in the end. Thank you. (Although it feels really weird and sometimes my spacebar wont fully go up and it's really annoying.)

Literally just spent 7 hours trying to figure out how to get rid of stabilizer rattle..... Wish I had just watched this before I started, cause it's literally what I ended up doing after trying literally everything. @@Citex61 You can use both if you want. Though you'll probably have to break them in. I say; try just the lube first, to see if you feel like you need the holee mod.
@@Kais. okay thanks for your answer!
this is literally what I was looking for thank you hamaji
Best stabilizer mod that I have seen on TH-cam
Vid came out earlier then expected. Not complaining
Thanks for the great guide. I'm currently building my first keyboard and this helped a lot! Also, nice camera work. Hard to get clear shots with such small subject matter.
Time stamps for anyone who need a sound comparison between pre-modded and modded stabilizer: 0:08 and 6:53
This is awesome, the first time I've seen this particular mod.
Exactly. I would not expect this to be a permanent solution.
I used this video of yours as a guide, and the mod worked pretty well for me and now I can't stop pressing the spacebar.
Good call. I actually prefer medical tape now.
wow! I've tried reassembling and relubing the stablizers a ton and nothing would fix the spacebar rattle on one side.. however the Holee mod solves it all!!!!
THANKS SO MUCH Hamaji!
Will post a sound test soon and you can be the judge of that! ;)
Had the most annoying clicking sound on one side of my spacebar that I couldn't figure out, but this seemed to do the trick! Thanks for the tutorial
My spacebar has been ticking for months and I finally decided to do the holee mod, I was too lazy to do it before.
And holy even tho it's extremely scuffed, the unbalanced muted sound still sounds better than extremely ticking sound. Please do it it's worth it
This finally made my drop ctrl nice to use! Thank you!
OMG thank you so much this made my keyboard so much more thockyyyyy ily vids keep up the good work
Thank you. My Keychron k2v2 75% board has been amazing... except the space bar rattle. It was the only thing that has prevented the board from being perfect.
This mod also makes spacebar sound much more pleasant and less hollow
Finally did it. It was time consuming but it was worth. I test it with band aid but it was too mushy so I ended up doing it with medical tape and it was way better!
I really hope the adhesive will stay in place 😬🤞
Thank you so so so much, I was getting so frustrated that my spacebar was rattling and then I did this, It frustrates you a little bit while doing it but it's so much more worth it in the end. Thank you. (Although it feels really weird and sometimes my spacebar wont fully go up and it's really annoying.)
I just re did it after a year and its so much better 💀
Thanks for helping me i clipped all my stabs all of them sound great. except for right shift because i messed it up. But it doesn't matter nobody uses it lol
Tryed it out today and it is absolutely amazing! btw Hi Hamaji Neo!
Nice and thorough tutorial! Defs gonna use in on my next build :)
Literally just spent 7 hours trying to figure out how to get rid of stabilizer rattle..... Wish I had just watched this before I started, cause it's literally what I ended up doing after trying literally everything.
The only thing I did different was I used the rubber tape that kbdfans sells for their regular bandaid mod. And I also added a tiny piece under where the wires clip into the stabilizers!
Nice video. Really helped me out. Keep them coming 👍👍
Thank you :)
the bandaid mod actually work for my spacebar
This "hobby" is a f"ing wormhole, I love it.
just got some durock screw ins and i did this my spacebar is sounding amazing :D
Wow amazing tutorial keep it up some of the stuff feel a little off but it’s getting better so I assume it will work all the kinks out with use
