Thought this was going to be a bit of a click bait, but after watching and comparing the sounds of the previous keyboard builds that were built this build actually kills it! Thocky! I love the quick breakdown of everything with samples.... Great job!
I like how you give samples of different sounds, eg switches, key cap shapes. I actually thought the PBT space bar had the prettiest clink sound. I never knew key cap profile changes sound. I would like to hear more about sound differences, as I'm looking for my ideal sound and how to make it
My whole tongue just melted lol. I'm getting back to this hobby after almost 7 YEARS since I first getting into the mkb hobb. Back then, hotswaps weren't as common and we had to practice soldering and desoldering lol. RIP to many sacrificial boards. This inspired me more to build a custom board!
Your videos are insanely good. I just ordered my first mechanical keyboard and I am going for a thocky/creamy sound. This video taught me so much about the hobby, not just about thockiness. Extremely well made video too. Thank you for your videos!
This may seem like a reasonable conclusion but its only because of 99% of youtubers have given the wrong idea basically. The only reason it seems like this is because of the heavy mods everyone does. But realistically what makes the “thock”, the low pitched noise when keys are pressed is due to there being a lot of density absorbing the sound. Depending on metal of choice, this can be high pitched or low and thock. But mainly if the keyboard has foam or other fillers in the right areas. Like pcb, plate, case, etc. then it will make it sound low pitched. Just as seen with the comparisons with keycaps. A heavier material keycap, such as ceramic will produce a lower pitched noise because its absorbing more of the higher frequencies. Comparatively, the more lightweight plastics and thin keycaps will produce a very high pitched noise.
Very timely YT recommendation - Watching this video whilst replacing the keycaps on my keeb Mountain Everest modded with sandwiched foam, Poron switch & plate pads. Still on the U4Ts that I lubed since well over a year ago. Now I'm wondering if I should blutak my SA keycaps to get more thock. 😁
I just got an XVX Pro KB with White Linear Switches and it has a very natural Thock to it! Feels like my keyboard is made from solid granite but nice and easy to type on. Addictive actually!!
Try spring swapping the bigger keys? I think the difference in sound could be attributed to the heavier weight, and a heavier spring may counteract nicely.
Need help on an affordable thocky full size keyboard. Was planning to get the C2 + changing the switches and keycaps but maybe there are better options out there.
That sounds really good! I have not liked using my ceramic caps because of bad mods. This is a perfect solution! Working on my mammoth 75 at the moment and just cant get the spacebar right. Its annoying lol
@@LewisToh dang that sucks i was going to buy one this upcoming group buy can u tell me which plate should i use for pc case with top mount or o ring mount? What plate should i use they have pp/alu/fr4/cf/pom plate to choose for thocky sound and what switches should i use? Thanks
Yeah Cerakey should definitely use this in their ads that was crazy (they're easily my favorite), great job on the build man, was impressed with that sound, gonna try and build my own thockiest now
subscribed!!!!! i wish i was able to watch your videos when i first started getting into mechanical keyboards! love this video!! short and straight to the point and that keyboards sounded HELLLLAAAAA goood!! im going to binge watch ur videos soon :) keep it up man ur doing amazing!
I had been a user of Keychron K2 v2 with Gateron Yellow switches and recently upgraded to Keychron V1 Max with Gateron G Pro 3.0 Yellow switches, I like "silent & thocky" and linier switches. As the previous one I have modded the V1 Max and really liking it a lot, for the price I paid. Also ordered Cherry PBT Doule-Shot Dark Blue/Black keycaps set (scomes with Xinmeng A66 keyboards). My next keyboard definitely will be the one with mechanical switches, maybe in a year or two. Otherwise, my beloved keyboard typing experience has been those with ThinkPad notebooks (typing and productivity, not gaming of course).
This build turned out awesome and I like when one of us uses a different switch or keycap to achieve something different. With all of these boxes and bags and jars of switches lying around, might as well find a use for them and DAMN did this sound good! Hopefully one of these days there will be a meet near me where you and all of the other keeb lords will magically appear! lol Can't wait to see your next board!
Mmmmm the thock sound feels like two dens jade marbles clashing together but without the higher end of the frequencies. On another note, do you or does anyone have any recommendations for someone who wants a fullsize keyboard (96% works too) with a knob/scrollwheel to change volume and is usable with nordic layout key such as Å Ä Ö. I would also prefer a wired keyboard but I'm open to hybrid connection as well. And ofc I would like to be able to make the keyboard thocking like the one in the video. Currently using a corsair K75 (I think) with MX silent switches which fits all of my criteria. But I'm starting to feel that I wanna know more about keyboards. Oh and for budget, preferably under 150$
Hey lewis, nice video. I really enjoy tactile switch like cherry blue but don't like the noisy sound. But not really liking brown feels. What switch you suggest for me to try?
My second time commenting this sorta comment but this is just amazing a better version of the sugar 65 for around the same price this is just phenomenal for beginners.
If you try this challenge again, you should try Durock ice king switches. I was doing some research to find the best thocky switches that I could get and they were the conclusion. Plus they have south facing LED diffusers. Honestly they're great and have seriously upgraded the sound of my RK M75, along with different keycaps but tbh they're very similar to the original keycaps.
Hey, I was wondering if you could give me some recommendations for keyboards. 75% Hot swappable, RGB backlit, multi-host, with a knob, mid to high budget. Thank you for your time
High end doesn't do rgb backlit. You can rarely see underglow around the case. If you want something really nice, go with a groupbuy board that speaks to you. Keep an open mind instead of hugging to very specific random things it "needs." Or just stick to entry and get a keychron or neo
Sounds very good! I want to see one without the ceramic keycaps, they are amazing of course, but I think they're a bit niche and not a lot of ppl want to use them. Still great video!
since you use screen text i would recommend you put in a counter after each sound test.. So we can dim the sound back to normal volume without blowing out our speakers or ear drums ..hahah Just a friendly tip.. since you already know how to add text on screen in processing ..
If im not super confident in making my own thocky keyboard, is there any kind of service I can look for that may be able to make one for me ? Im just genuinely asking cause I dont know a lot about making them
somehow i don't like the difference in sound between small keycaps and the bigger keycaps :( maybe try the bigger keycaps that could mimic the sound / similar with the ceramic small ones
Hello! Guys, can somebody help me? I'm looking for a 96%-98% keyboard, tri-mode connection, knob, and most importantly, METAL frame, but it has to be 130$ or less, any advice?
hi, i'm looking forward to come down to the flea market. I would like to know if you guys will be selling some of the switches you mentioned in the video. would love to buy them!
This is honestly a really good build. Other than the ceramic keycaps costing a fortune, I'm glad to see other parts of this build were quite affordable, if not cheap. For a version 2, I'm curious if using the zoom65 v1 would work well, with SA or OSA keycaps. People are also sleeping on the vertex V1 switches, cuz they've been the deepest sounding keycaps I've ever used before and are very affordable.
also putting some sort of rubber inside the space bar similar to the the ghost bar from nuphy would reduce the ping and make it sound better. Maybe putting spray foam in it? Worth a try.

Man, I'm loving my husky linears. I bought a bunch of single switches. Nothing could beat them imo. Including the boba u4t and boba linears.
most of the thockiest boards are plastic case. aluminum is way harder to make thock.
Opposite. Alu is overall better in every way
Opposite!

XDA keycap is the biggest play to make it thock. The taller the keycaps the better

I put milky yellow pros and mt3 keycaps on a C2 and it's very thocky. Also tape mod, foam, and desk mat. Hope this helps.
i feel like to make it more marbly you could perhaps remove the tape from the pcb
great vid, would you recommend this over the hi75? thanks
i think they both have their pros & cons, most importantly is what layout you prefer
what about overall sound, im thinking of using vertex v1s
Thanks for video. It sounds great. One question for Duhuk Lumia Matcha v4 switches.... what version? 63.5gr or 55gr? Thanks.
i got the 63.5!
