3 Days with an Icon - 992 Porsche 911 Carrera S

  • I've wanted a Porsche 911 for over a decade. Last weekend, I drove the latest 992 Carrera S in anger, and as you'd expect, it's a brilliant machine - the undisputed king of semi-practical everyday sports cars. However, I'm not so sure I want one anymore - at least not as desperately as I once did. My son is suitably shattered when I tell him I won't be getting one anytime soon. But holy sh*t, what a car.
    NOTE: Some viewers seemed to confuse my "90% of the fun for 30% of the price" statement with my MX5, which is incorrect. For that to be true, my MX5 would have to be worth at least $100k. My statement is in reference to the Boxster and Cayman (I bought a base model 981 Boxster in late 2022). And yes, it's at least 90% of the fun of the 911!

    Lovely video. Bought my first Porsche (a Cayman S) in 2009 when my kids were 4 & 6 … so a second car. The only marque I’ve driven since. Through Caymans, Cayennes & a 991 it’s been magical. Now at 60 years old Ive just ordered a 992 Targa 4S. The dream continues.

    • @PETERFRITZPHOTO
      @PETERFRITZPHOTO  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mark - that sounds utterly delightful. I’ve been a Benz driver for almost 20 years (sold my last two - a CLK430 cabriolet & a GL320) about 3 years ago to buy the MX5 & Pajero. I feel like it’s time to finally step up the brand that’ll satisfy my sports driving ‘needs’ through to the end - Porsche. Like you, I’ll start with a Cayman or Boxster, and see where it leads. I’m going to rent a 718 S for a weekend and see how I feel at the end of it. I already know the answer, though. 😉 Oh, and a 992 Targa 4S; a rolling work of art. 👍

      Thank you! And I can relate. I mentioned getting 90% of the experience for 30% of the cost. The car I’m thinking of isn’t the MX5 (that would make it over $100k); but a 2-5 year old 718. My soul needs a Porsche, too. 👍

    I loved this video Peter! What a fun and exciting adventure to share with your son! I have a love of sports cars myself. Three years ago when I moved from snowy Colorado to North Carolina, I was excited to get rid of my AWD Ford Fusion (which did have a turbo) for a Nissan 370Z and I have never regretted it. I can honestly say, when I drive my car...it still makes me happy! 😀

    I enjoyed your video. I’ve been a driving enthusiast for most of my adult life and always drove some sort of a performance car. From a ‘79 Corvette to ‘84 VW GTI to ‘87 BMW 635 CSI, I’ve always enjoyed cars that eagerly went around the bend. With a bit of success in my career, I moved onto ‘97 993 C2S and owned a number of Porsches including a 996 GT3. What I can share about my experience with all these cars is that I found Porsches to be among the best engineered cars I’ve ever owned (all 38 of them) and that they have a unique set of characteristics that is highly enjoyable. And each model, while superseded by the next gen model, tends to maintain its desirability even as it ages. For such a high performance car, Porsches are relatively affordable to maintain and they are highly durable, comparing them to some of the other European high performance cars. I currently own a 2020 718 Spyder and it is by far the most enjoyable car I’ve owned to run up and down the California coast and its canyons. I can’t think of another car that I would enjoy driving as much as this Spyder. And that is just me. I am sure others enjoy their C8’s, Zs, or BMW M’s, or McLarens, etc. If you are a driving enthusiast and you have a car you love to drive, whatever car it may be, I think it’s worth all the money you are spending on it. As for me, I am now older and I may look for something more age appropriate but it will still likely be another Porsche. So, enjoy the car you have and have fun motoring!

    Wow Peter! Such a cool experience! As a kid I used to daydream about Porsche’s and frequently collected the toy hotwheels. So cool to see you driving one and get an up close gel for driving one. Must’ve been really fun to do with your son as well. Glad you got to do that!

    • @PETERFRITZPHOTO

      Yep, it wouldn’t have been half as much fun without my boy. It’s funny, I was never a ‘Porsche guy’ growing up, but these days, I find then desperately attractive. For me, though, I reckon it’s gonna be a Boxster or Cayman. They’re just so good these days, they’ve almost rendered the 911 moot (and definitely over priced - at least on my budget!). 😄

    Bruh I would’ve fought a raging bull to have been driving a lamborghini at 18. That photo of the r32, 911 and nsx is amazing, wallpaper stuff too. I have to check out some of these roads. Driving is imo the greatest joy and the funnest activity a person can do in the 21st century, maybe sex or being a fighter pilot measures up but idk. Being in a good car definitely makes a difference, but imo a steering wheel, pedals and going as fast as you can (while being safe) is already 50% of it.
    Well made video as always, and great driving too.

      I so relate to your comments, Lachlan. After 47 years of driving (37 of them, legally), few things bring me as much joy and satisfaction as operating a car. Even a shitty one. It’s something that few things can touch. I expect flying does a similar thing for pilots; as does riding for motorcyclists (something I’ve also loved most of my life). And of course, it’s not just the cars and the driving; it’s the freedoms, the adventures, and the people around this whole industry and culture. I love all of it. Thanks for dropping in, mate. I agree. The 911 just isn’t worth it for ME. I look at it this way: 1. Anything is worth exactly what someone wants to pay. 2. There’s no way any of us could build our own 911 for $350k, so on that basis alone, it’s brilliant value. 3. Compared to a McLaren/Lamborghini/Ferrari, the 911 is better built, more usable, and better value for money. 4. Ultimately, everything is relative. Right now, relative to my financial position, the 911 isn’t worth the asking price - for me. 🙂

    Wonderful video. This is how I feel about my 2005 MINI R50 (that I've owned from new). While I LOVE 911s and would not say no if someone offered me one, my MINI delivers so much joy both in terms of driving, and making improvements to the car and performing routine maintenance is a relaxing and rewarding hobby. There are other things my wife and I want to do with our money: travel, pay off our mortgage early so we can retire early, possibly buy a second property, etc. Like the 911, my car has a center-mounted tachometer with a digital speedometer, it has frameless windows and leather seats, it is ideal for two people and all their kit, and it handles like a race car. In sunny conditions and through the worst Canadian winters have to offer, I have travelled to all points in North America in my MINI: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Chicago, Phoenix, and more! The most important thing about a car is the joy it delivers, and you don't need a car that's as expensive as a house to get that.

      LOL! I must admit, I get the most pleasure from my cheapest car - the Nissan Elgrand that I converted into a camper van. All up, it cost less than $20k, yet it’s super comfortable, quiet, practical and capable - even off-road.

    • @PETERFRITZPHOTO
      @PETERFRITZPHOTO  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Steve - I notice a few people have drawn the same assumption from my video, but I actually don’t compare them in the video. The ‘90% of the experience for 30% of the price’ isn’t in reference to the MX5. If it was, that would mean the MX5 costs over $100,000. In any case my MX5 is quite heavily modified (MCA coil overs, strut braces, exhaust, etc.), so it drives extremely well on windy roads. BTW, have you driven the 992 and the ND MX5? What did u think of them?

      @@PETERFRITZPHOTO Hi Pete, I haven’t driven Mazda car’s or MX 5 before the nearest to it was Toyota MR2, I had 997.2 4S, 991.2 GTS and now I drive 992. Turbo S. Your video editing and quality is enjoyable to watch. I can say the Turbo S is in a complete league of its own in terms of performance and ride even if we had to compare it with all 911 models. However, 911’s are all very practical for daily use and not just a sports car like any other 2 seater sport cars. I also own a standard Cayman 718….

      @PETERFRITZPHOTO  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot, Steve. It's good to see someone sharing their thoughts based on real world experience - at least with the 911 and Cayman. Actually on that, it's the 718 Cayman/Boxster I'm planning to buy - they're cars I was actually thinking of when making the 90% fun for 30% cost assumption. Since you're experienced with both machines, do you think it's a fair assumption to make? I'm planning to buy one of them (still can't decide!) for my birthday next year. I agree with you on the issue of practicality. Even though my 11-year-old son was cramped in the back of the Carrera, it was doable. And of course the luggage space is far better than most sports/super cars.

      @stevesworks1391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PETERFRITZPHOTO No worries Pete, agree it’s good to share thoughts and experiences together in this real world. For me, I would prefer Cayman than Boxster all because I admire its curve lines coupe design of Cayman’s and that I’m not a huge fan of soft tops depending on the type of car. Also, if you are located in Australia you do have advantage of the better weather ☀️so Boxster would be ideal but both models are very enjoyable to drive can’t go wrong. Good luck with your choices and I won’t worry too much about practicality as I see you also have a 4x4 👍

      @@lopp5391 I look at it this way: 1. Anything is worth exactly what someone wants to pay. 2. There’s no way any of us could build our own 911 for $350k. 3. Compared to a McLaren/Lamborghini/Ferrari, the 911 is better built, more usable, and better value for money. 4. Ultimately, everything is relative. Right now, relative to my financial position, the 911 isn’t worth the asking price - for me. 🙂
