2016 / 2017 Mazda CX-9 First Drive Review | in 4K UHD!

  • With excellent handling, sharp looks and a reasonable price tag, the new Mazda CX-9 is the cure for the average 3-row crossover. The last CX-9 was no slouch, but the new model brings a world-class interior, more gadgets and significantly improved fuel economy. All I could wish for is a more powerful engine.

    Not really a fan of large SUVs but when I saw this I had to check it out. Gorgeous design, especially when you see it in person! Interior is ace too. Interesting to see the luxury finesse and features for significantly less money than actual luxury offerings.

    I took a test drive of this the other day. love the way it drives of course it's Mazda. the turning radius is surprisingly shorter than my 2016 Jetta which is impressive for vehicle of its size. That 4 cylinder doesn't feel short on power at all. oh and this car is super quite from inside.

      They always have... especially when Ford owned them. Back in 2010 I bought a Mazda3 after pricing it next to the Ford Focus... the Focus was more expensive for less standard options. The base Focus cost more than my Mazda3 Sport that had Bose/Sunroof package... so I went with Mazda. In 2013, I needed to get a bigger ride, my wife took over my Mazda3 and I got a 2011 Mazda CX-9. Again, I priced it with Highlander and Pilot and of course the Traverse which was the only thing bigger. Price per standard options, the Mazda was the better deal. Granted, it was used and resale being what it is... I still have the CX-9. I think most people know of Mazda, know they are great cars, know they handle and drive the best next to a BMW or other German cars, but for whatever reason, just are not buying them. I am guessing it is because their friends do not have a Mazda, so they do not buy one. Minivan complex anyone?

    Just want to add this as well: according to Mazda, zero to 60 wasn't in the character of the new CX 9. They were concentrate on the driving aspect of it. You can find this information on Motoman Tv. A Mazda engineer breaks down the whole motor for you

    Alex, I to wish for more power. I also am trying to figure out why they had to resort to 4cyl to lighten the load when Honda some how made the Pilot larger and lighter at the same time. I know that Mazda is a smaller OEM and that may be the reason for some of my criticism. For instance I was hoping they would upgrade the transmission to an 8,9 or ten speed. No panoramic sunroof which is pretty much available on every other make of CUV. Cooled seats would have been nice.. I love the look, inside and out as it appears very premium. If Ford decides to redo the Flex then both of them will be at the top of my list. I am for some reason as I have told you before attached to the Flex.
    Once again great review and keep up the good work. Cant believe that some less knowledgeable folks here would insinuate that you are getting paid by Mazda for a good review. I thought OEM stopped that in the 90's due to backlash and rep damage.

    Hi Alex, great review! Thanks for all the detail. Really enjoyed your format. Quick question: you mentioned the cargo space with the 3rd row up being 14.4 cubic feet. That seems significantly reduced compared to the outgoing CX-9. Can you provide the cargo space with 3rd row down as well as with both the 2nd and 3rd row down? One of the things that I appreciated about the previous gen (which I own) is the more than 100 cubic feet of total cargo space (only the Pilot is bigger). I'm worried this new CX-9 will be significantly reduced. Have you been able to query Mazda on why such a significant change? (if confirmed). Thanks!

  • @ChristopherWalkenPUA
    @ChristopherWalkenPUA 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I wrote this over on TFL's sneak peak review, but I have to say it again. Why did Mazda not include heated rear seats, remote start, or a heated steering wheel on any of the trim levels? Not even the high end $44k trim has these features, which can be found in all of the cx-9's competition (pathfinder, pilot, highlander, explorer etc). For those of us who live in colder climates these features are more important than a heads-up display or pieces of wood next to the shifter.

    • @V1perKiller
      @V1perKiller 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Christopher Walken Also no cooled seats, instead we have "Napa leather + real wood " lol

    • @ChristopherWalkenPUA
      @ChristopherWalkenPUA 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +V1perKiller Wow, no cooled seats either. Good catch. Gotta wonder what they were thinking leaving out so many interior features. But yeah, it's got pieces of wood inside of it. Awesome.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Christopher Walken I think that the real reason is Mazda doesn't have the ability to amortize costs across enough models to bring some of those features in. Instead they bet on features like the LED lamps which are shared across the model line. You notice that the CX-9 still uses the same radar cruise control, 2-zone climate control, etc as the rest of the Mazda lineup. I think it's all budget related,.

  • @MrAntoniorey
    @MrAntoniorey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Heres a true statement, no one needs zero to 60 when your torque kicks in at 2000 RPM. That's why Mazda went with the award winning sky active engine four with the turbo. They're promoting less assholeness driving. I think too many people are sold on more horsepower and believe it's a necessity. In my humble opinion

    I love your videos Alex and I watch at least 2 everyday.
    Just for perspective I drive a 2014 BMW 328d which gets 45-50mpg on the highway, I am definitely a car guy and looking to upgrade to a 3 row SUV for the family. I don't want to spend more than 45k, I don't want to pay for premium gas and value high mpg, and also drove the 2016 Kia Sorento. Test drove the the cx9 with my wife last week. The 4 sylinder drives well but I am concerned about how it loses power at high rpm. It does not have an eco mode or start stop technology which I think would have really helped get it better mpg in the city. The technology is definitely more than what the Kia Sorento offers but Mazda falls short in the navigation department. Their maps look very outdated and not high resolution. It seems like they decided to just make icons big to compensate for the lack of thought put into making the navigation graphics good. It really doesn't have any depth or character. The navigation screen also seems small because Of the big black bezel around the screen. The heads up display is amazing and I like it better than the one in my BMW. The control nob does not allow you to use it as a "back" jester by pushing it to your left, so you actually have to take your eyes off the road to hit the "back" button. The second row has a hump in the middle so it might be difficult to fit 3 adults there but on the plus side it has automatic climate control there which is mostly found in luxury vehicles. Unfortunately the 3rd row does not have any AC vents which could be a problem for even short trips on hot days if the car takes a while to cool down. How did Mazda miss giving the front passengers seats the ability to go up and down? They either didn't think your passengers matter or they did it to save weight for a more zoom zoom drive. The signature trim leather is nice but it would have been better if they were perforated because they would feel nicer and not as hard. Overall it is a very good SUV and my wife loves it more than the Kia Sorento because it gets good gas mileage with AWD, drives and feels like a small car for when she is alone in the car. I wish Mazda would do something about that bad navigation system/map.

    Alex on Autos - I love how detailed and methodical your reviews are. I am a bit confused by something and hope you might be able to clarify for me. I watched your review of the Honda Pilot and this review of the Mazda CX-9 and in this video despite stating that the Pilot has more second and third row space, you gave the CX-9 higher scores for second and third row. Is that because the seats in the CX-9 are more comfortable despite slightly less space or are there other design aspects that contributed to the higher score for the CX-9 in those two categories?

    Alex, I appreciate your presentation but I expected from you a better explanation about the CX9 engine and performance in relation to a V6 cylinder Eng. Is this engine durable enough for a SUV usage (example long family trips) in comparison to a conventional V6 SUV?. How is the impact in a medium and long term in the performance and durability of an engine supported just for 4 Cylinder with high HP and torque in relation to a 6 cylinder engine in terms of fatigue and durability?. What are pros and cons or advantages and disadvantages. I guaranty you that these are the major questions that people ask to themselves when take the option for purchasing a CX9 instead of a conventional SUV V6 like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander or Nissan pathfinder or Murano. Thank you very much in advance for any response

    Another solid review Alex!! So the lesser 2017 CX-5 GT can now be had with heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power passenger seat, but I can't get any of those in the "more premium" 2017 CX-9 GT or Signature (US Spec)??? If Mazda offered a package that included those features, plus ventilated front seats, a pano sunroof and remote start that didn't require a subscription or additional fob, I'd buy it immediately. Until that happens, I'll keep waiting or buy a Ford Edge Sport (which comes with all of those features I want). HUD display is nice, but not a deal-breaker for me. Still, this Mazda design (int and ext) is intriguing!

    I figured the engine would be only just barely adequate when every singly review was basically regurgitating Mazda's PR department's focus on the engine being more than enough for most driver's. This is the first review that somewhat mentioned the engine power is not all it's cracked up to be, and I believe Alex over all the other reviews because like I said each review has been a complete regurgitation of Mazda's press release. Another excellent review ! Alex, one question if you have the time: Which SUVs have brake hold?
    I know that the Kia Sorento does, but it seems few others offer it. I love the brake hold feature. My BMW X550 also had it. Thank you.

    Mazda has been upping their game with their models!
    but this doesn't seem bigger than a pathfinder.
    is it possible it's just the lines that make it look smaller ?

      Yeah, pictures make it look a lot more trim than it is. This is actually longer than the big Pilot and Explorer! It's over 8" longer than the Highlander which looks big in person. Granted, it does have the longest hood.

    Great review on the CX-9. I am curious to see how this compares to the new GMC Acadia. I live in Manhattan, and the new Pilot, the new GMC Acadia are shorter in length making it potentially a better choice for more urban dwellers.

    We have a 2004 Lexus GX470 that I love but it's getting a bit old, over 100K miles. We haven't had many issues with it. We were thinking of the new CX9, I just hope I won't miss the V8. But gas mileage on the Lexus is pretty bad. The Lexus is also SUPER comfy and big inside. Does the CX9 interior color have any options? I don't like that Auburn.

    It's too bad, they went with a 6spd, so many manufactures are using the ZF 8 speed which is worlds better than any auto 6spd option. I think they skimped with the transmission (we know they did under the hood). So while this looks like an attractive package, I think it's under powered for the space and it's using some hold technology in the transmission.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The easy answer there is that there is at the moment just one 8-speed transverse transaxle in existence and it's made by Aisin which is [more or less] part of Toyota. This is the 8-speed that Volvo, BMW, MINI, Lexus, Toyota and even GM use in their transverse models. The ZF 9-speed has been getting very mixed reviews (although I don't mind it at all). Mazda licenses certain patents but makes their own transmissions so it would be a big leap for them to either make an 8-speed or buy someone's 8-speed.

      With the extra torque I bet those gears would have made this car as quick or quicker than the Pilot, and probably a lot more responsive because of the torque. Do you know if a heated steering wheel and android auto are coming in 2017?

    Alex, I am in the market for an SUV with a k budget. How would you rate the CX9, Durango, Explorer, Sorento from first to last. I really like this CX however I think I am just shy of some of the options I believe come with the Durango at less price point such as roof rails etc.

    Nice car but my main issue is the extended front grille which can get damage if parked on the streets of large cities like New York City. I wish they had a bumper that stock-out.

    Thanks for the review Alex! No vented seats on the top trim is a bit of a downer, but everything else looks great -especially the HUD. Replacing my 2008 CX-9 with the 2016 or a Volvo XC90. Still deciding.

    Instead of dialing up the motor and sacrificing efficiency I would make it a hybrid like the Volvo xc90 T8. Although it would add extra weight due to the addition of the batteries and the motor it will be faster off the line and combined fuel economy will be raised dramatically and people will have the option of driving silently on electric for at least 20-30 miles. A killer improvement for the CX-9. I hope Mazda considers it in future model sooner than later.

    Hello Alex. I wanted to ask you a question. I've look at your review for the Mazda, and Acura MDX. I want to make a purchase but wanted your quick opinion. If you had to personally buy one, which would it be? The Mazda CX-9, or the Acura MDX? Thank you for your time, and great reviews.

    Fantastic review, Alex. Definitely more than "near-luxury" in some areas - for me, competition is even broader. I don't think I could ever internally justify a Q7 or RX over the Signature, for example. Closest maybe is the XC90 T5 Momentum, but you're not getting Napa leather or wood grain anything at that price point.

    As usual Alex does a fantastic job of reviewing a vehicle. I was going to complain he didn't mention the size of the infotainment screen but he got to that at the end. So the only question I wish I could ask is about reliability. Mazda is famous for making fun to drive cars that basically have what you're looking for. But I've also heard they're not the most reliable. Although after seeing this review I'm not sure I care.

    Excellent video. Hope " all you need, but no more" engine sells well. I'd skimp a couple of mpg or inches of legroom for a little more oomph , personally. And I wonder how impressed your passenger will be with the wood and nappa leather when he/she can't adjust the seat comfortably on a long trip. That said, I think it's gorgeous and would work for me!
