A bit of good news, sort of: you can buy a cover for the dead pedal (as well as for the other pedals) as an accessory set from Mazda and have the dealer install this kit. That's what I did for my CX-3, which I bought after seeing your review :). I ordered this accessory when I ordered the car, so I got it installed just a couple of weeks after taking delivery of the car. If they have this accessory available in my country, they should have it in the States and not only for the CX-3, but also for the CX-5. Other then that, a superb review, as always! I am in absolute awe with the CX-3, if this brand keeps making good and beautiful cars, then I might stick with this brand when the time comes to buy a new car.
+Mihai Scortea Seems like most people are happy with the modern Mazdas. Glad they had a dead pedal accessory for the cx3. Its all about long term reliability now.
Al dead pedal (and clutch. brake, gas) is avalable in the States. They're nice but cost a pretty penny. If buying new, ABSOLUTELY bargain with your salesman to get at least the dead pedal and optional door entry kick panels thrown in to sweeten the deal.
Another option if you don't feel like having your car drilled into to install the dead pedal cover is the Premium Floor Liners that Mazda Canada sells. I have them on my 2016 Mazda3 and the fit is perfect and most importantly covers the dead pedal. I got mine from Mazdashop.ca and it was free shipping to the US.
Recently picked one of these up for the wife's daily kid-hauler. It is a fantastic vehicle at this price point. It's a little bit underpowered but pretty much everything in this class is. Even those with a small turbo-charged 4s aren't very impressive. It is so much more refined than its predecessor and the rest in this class.
Love how you can rely on SG to always be completely and utterly himself. It really is part of why I watch all his reviews because it tells me he will be as truthful about what he is reviewing as he is with himself.
I'm really glad you pointed out the Soul Red paint's appeal. This is still, after 3 years with my 3 GT, such an eye catching paint. It only can be seen in sunlight and a clean body, so only summertime in Canada, but man, either midday or in the early sunset, the colour takes on this fluorescent sheen that's just incredible. I read the Crystal version on the CX-5 is even more impressive so I'm curious to see it in person during a sunny day. I was wondering what you think of the 4 cylinder's sound inside? To me this is the best sounding motor in a non luxury or sports car setting, it distances itself from the vacuum cleaner sounding 4 cylinders in mainstream vehicles by being more smooth and linear, with a more throaty noise at 3-4K. In your interior acceleration segments it sounded pretty good, similar to what I hear in my 3. I'm hoping the diesel doesn't rob it from that smooth roar and equally that it will be much faster. How did you find the HUD? You didn't speak about it much or show it and this is the second application of the windshield projected one after the CX-9.

Thanks to you and your videos, l upgraded today from my 2012 CX5 GT+tec to a 2017 CX5 Akera AWD 2.2 Diesel. I test drove both the CX9 and CX5 on Aussie roads and was very impressed on the level of quietness and ride handling. Of note l did not get the slimline weather shields for the windows like my old CX5 as they really added to the road noise. So why upgrade?? l guess the technology upgrades including new styling and softer ride were enough to peak my interest. Descent fuel economy played a part as well. Keep up the great work Cheers (from down under)
Was it the 2.5 turbo the CX-9 had you test drove? What made you choose the CX-5 over the CX-9? Also, was your 2012 a diesel as well? I'd like some input on comparing the 2.2 diesel vs 2.5 petrol.
Hi Tom Tam, yes it was the 2.5 turbo (CX9) that l test drove. A great drive with plenty of pickup however there is no substitute for the diesel when it comes to the 2.2 Turbo and 420Nm of torque. My previous CX5 was also a diesel, never missing a beat (avg for 120,000km was 6.2 lt/km or 74,500miles and 37.93miles per gallon). I would say that if you want the driving experience and torque.... go with the diesel CX5. The CX9 would and could so much better if it had a diesel....Hope this helps!!
It's good to hear about a repeat customer satisfied with a continuously improving product. In the US the diesel has been confirmed for the later half of this year. Mazda is testing the waters with only 10,000 or so units in the higher trim levels. I hope it goes well and that the availability won't be short lived. I test drove a 2017 CX-5 recently and agreed with a lot of what Savagegeese had to say about the vehicle. The 2.5 petrol power plant was the primary con in that it reminded me how tired of the engine I am in my own CX-5. So that is why I'm excited for the upcoming diesel and also disappointed about the 2.5t petrol being only available on the CX-9 at the same time. We'll see!
New angles on the hood during the talking. Panning inside the car when you're driving. Going next level, well done. Check Edelkrone portable bundle. It's expensive but It reminded me of your channels.
Wow such amazing quality work. I recently bought a roku so I can watch youtube vids on my 47" TV. It really shows off your work even more. The crispness was above the rest before, but now its a whole new level of quality. You have set the bar higher. You and Mazda actually have a lot in common. Some of the best out there, but totally underappreciated.
I'm really enjoyed the camera work, smirking constantly at the facial expressions (like the deadpan at 16:00) and the In The Shoppe banter about what is really a modern CUV but a cost-saving exercise.. Soulless sounding engine in a very shapely body with damn fine paint. Bring the turbo, even as a diesel fanboy, leave that out.
Nice review. FYI: I bought a Mazda3 hatchback in January 2017; watched your videos on your Mazda3 experience which helped my decision. For the dead pedal area, I bought a $5 all-weather mat and cut 4 individual pieces, each which fit the dead pedal surface area. I put some velcro on the backside of each piece to connect to the existing dead pedal carpet. Works great and I can replace whenever needed.
imaronin I also bought a 2017 Mazda 3 after his review lol. I ordered a Mazda OEM dead pedal cover and had the dealer install it. I'm happy with the outcome
I loved the camera angles in this vid. The wheel well and looking through the windshield at your mug especially. Glad to see you experimenting and not just making the same thing. I really appreciate all the little details you included in the review, like showing us the rear armrest with its two charging ports. That footwell is just gross. It's like no one at Mazda ever looked down there. Not once. The pedals look like some crap out of a Mitsubishi Mirage. If Mazda wants to raise prices they need to think about the entire interior space. When I open a car door I take in the whole thing, including the footwell. The CX-5 screams its cheap-ass nature loud and clear down there. Loved the stinger at the end. What the hell with the seat cushion being removable? And how did the battery die? I know my car has a cutoff to stop drains before the battery can't start the car. Another area Mazda cheaped out on or didn't think about?
+Candice Juliano Shooting Thanks, Candice. I continue to try new shots and see how it can all flow together some of it works luckily. You are right about the pedals. Its well known that creative cost savings on interior design means cutting where people cant see. The footwell is obviously one. And yes those pedals look like K car crap. I dont think buyers care about that stuff anyway. Dead pedal is silly though. It was bright and Sunny and was douing exterior shots for 4 hours left lights on. (Not on auto) had music going, hatch up and down. And my reward was no start.
Pisses me off that you put all this time and effort into making great vids and so many wankers are making a killing off click bait Vlogging trash. The amount of times I fell for some shit like, "I went driving with Mark Webber" and then it's 15 minutes of fucking around in a hotel room, getting coffee then they sort of maybe see Mark Webber drive past them on the highway, fucking shit like that makes me want to punch kittens.
Darth Carloos It really is. What I noted in this episode was turbowki basically calling Mark a lizard person. "You're the only one who's trying to redline all the time." No response, just acceptance.

Pier-Luc Montgrain - well? Did you buy one after all? If so, how do you like it?! A salesman is bringing an ‘18 CX-5 GT to my house today for me to test drive. Can’t wait!
Mazda 6 estate? Or wherever you live doesn’t have that? I really feel bad for the US market. Just look at their shitty VW passat hahaha, in most other markets, they get a lot nicer passat.
Great review, I'm going to be on the market for a small SUV in a few years and you sold me on the previous gen, glad to hear they made some improvements. I'll just leave the back seat in though.
I've always been a Mazda fanatic. The handling on their cars is superb. I currently own the 2006 Mazda 3 and was thinking about upgrading in November. This helped me make my decision. We just upgraded our 2009 Mazda 6 to the 2017 Mazda 6 & can definitely comment on the infotainment lag. When syncing with my iPhone it does take a while for the contacts to load so you get nothing by silence for a while. Unless you play it on USB port & not Bluetooth. Quicker pickup. But other than that it's not a turnoff.
@@joepearlzz8504 nope. I purchased a 2018 Mazda CX5 and loved it. I upgraded to a 2023 CX5 Turbo Signature and love this one too. I also own a 2021 CX30. I wouldn’t change to a different brand for anything.
i like this guy for the details even the date is 5/17/2017 if u know what i mean cx 5 2017 i am not sure if he meant to do it or its just a coincidence
Great review again man ! I laughed my ass off with Turbowksi comments. I own a 2016 CX-5 for 2 years now and I cant be happier with it, I get better milage than my previous 2010 Mazda 3 and on regular gas. I will definitely upgrade mine to this one in a couple of years from now. I totally agree with you on the lack of a cover for the dead pedal. Now one more thing: is it just me, or the infotainment system doesnt have a CD player now? Greetings from Chile (where by the way this new CX-5 isnt available yet until late july or august).
Another fantastic review- hard work and the new cam equipment pays off. And thanks for the daily driver discussion- getting us from A2B is how most of us have to drive, and the fun factor is a critical part of the purchase decision. I live in clean Northern California and I'd still be uptight about that damn dead pedal. PS- please no voice over when transversing the RR tracks - the sound and watching how the car and steering wheel react is a key component of compliance.
There is something great about the way it drives, its very subtle, the feeling you get through the steering wheel both on road and highway is very pleasing.
I have a mazdaspeed 3 and the videos of you driving on these country back roads makes me very jealous. Living in the middle of phx with 4 mil people and a grid system for an hour I never get to drive like that unless I head towards flagstaff or globe. Our family lives in Wisconsin and I love it out there maybe one day ill drive out.
The host knows more about the mechanics of the car than the so-called mechanic. If the lift segment was skipped this wouldn't take anything away from this channel.
Spot on, test rode one yesterday. Some points I liked that were not mentioned. There is a stage widening setting on the stereo that is pretty dam impressive. The stereo is ok but the bose tech brings it up a notch. The adaptive cruise setting show up on the HUD which is one of the best HUDs I have seen. I wish it had lane centering like the CRV. If you live in traffic like me, adaptive with HUD support is very nice and you will use it. You can hear it in the video, it sounds great when you get on the gas no turbos and cvts to mess things up. The sports mode really changes the mapping and will hold gears and keep the revs really high, it greatly increases the perception of performance and it sounds pretty bad ass. I drove a BMW X1 right before and I prefer the mazda as it has a nicer interior and handles better at least just tooling around I don't know about at the limits. I'm driving an older Lexus and the only reason I am not buying this car on impulse is that it's not a lux brand and it does not have apple play which is important since it can update itself over time through your phone so it will always be in sync with your phone when hard wired. Also, there is a factory remote start kit that ties into apps so you can start it from far away and warm it up, around $500 installed. Honesty, I could not believe this car. Probably a better fit for a guy from a performance and styling perspective than the CRV.
Damn man. I found your channel through the speaker isolation review, checked out your other videos to see if there were any other related reviews and was disapointed to only see car stuff (not a car guy at all, i drive an 89 magna worth less than those speaker isolaters) but daaamn there's a bump in video quality here. Awesome shots, super clean images, great dynamic range, clean colour grading and you still have the same layed back, normal guy kinda vibe but you seem more comftable infront of the camera. So kudos to your and any helpers. Don't be affraid to find sponsorship thought, maybe companies outside of the automotive industry to keep things transparent.
Great review! Love my 2018 CX-5 GT! For the money it's a great CUV. It's peppy enough in sport mode and it handles so much better than it's competition. Only complaint is the infotainment system is a little laggy. I installed Android auto/apple car play and it's extremely slow to react to voice commands. Other than that I'm extremely happy with it. Cheers!
This is by far the best CX-5 review I've seen so far, and will probably remain so. Gorgeous photography. Thank you!

+Aron Yeah the edlekrone looks good, very pricey though, 4k for kit.
Love your reviews, keep up the great work. Thanks also for testing cars that normal people actual drive.

I'm about to go get a '17 CX5, this review made me feel solid about that choice, thanks.
How has it been until now? Did you get any of the little
Common issues?
And my reward was no start.
savagegeese Really cool editing and shooting is spot on as usual
Pisses me off that you put all this time and effort into making great vids and so many wankers are making a killing off click bait Vlogging trash. The amount of times I fell for some shit like, "I went driving with Mark Webber" and then it's 15 minutes of fucking around in a hotel room, getting coffee then they sort of maybe see Mark Webber drive past them on the highway, fucking shit like that makes me want to punch kittens.
I was going to say this as well, I definitely can see a progression in the camera work, looks like all that new equipment in paying off.
The banter with Turbowski is the best
Darth Carloos It really is. What I noted in this episode was turbowki basically calling Mark a lizard person. "You're the only one who's trying to redline all the time." No response, just acceptance.
Darth Carloos ..... for me, at the beginning turbowski was funny, not anymore.. his comments about new cars are only crap got old very fast
David L. I went the other way. hated that bit originally and now love it because it's so low brow... I don't have the highest IQ though
8:34 - This right here demonstrates the cunning genius of Scott Turbowski.
Blue Horseshoe I still lol'd after watching it again haha!
Quite possibly the best review of this vehicle I've seen. Well done
Great review, I was waiting for a review for this model thanks Mr. Geese.
I really love how you really go in detail about the car
You my friend are easily the funniest, most interesting, most informative car reviewers. Kudos my friend, kudos! Keep up the good work. You deserve way more subs than the other car review channels. I just wish you would start doing modified cars sine you seem like you are a car enthusiast.
dude i just love your videos, your humor and way to do the videos are the only i enjoy at 100, congrats
I always watch car review vids and I can't believe I haven't seen any of your videos until now. You and alex are by far the best. Hope to see your review on the CR-V too!
I cried when you made the comment about the wheels. The camera bokeh too when you were driving. Best damn review EVER!!!!!
This was the best review I've seen on the CX5. I'll be buying this car in a couple weeks.
The thing I look forward to in each video is what inane action is in Tourbowski's intro. Cracks me up every time.
Oh and hi from Australia.
+millionsofmyles Yo, australia representing.
Well done. Been reading manual but learned a lot from this video. Now I Need to go over technical controls
Some incredibly detailed discussion about some of the improvements to the new CX-5. Great video guys - really enjoyed it!
you are the best car reviewer. real information in an entertaining delivery. thank you sir.
i never thought id ever buy a crossover but this is just beautiful
Nice review. Nice SUV. I really like their design philosophy. They are a small car company but i hope 20 years from now they are still in business.
man the quality is spot on. and the different shots love it
Awesome review. I'm a huge Mazda fan so it was nice seeing the pros and cons of this vehicle. And dude... Seems like you've lost some weight! Good job.
Your review is by far one of the better ones.
I like ur review to mechanical issues (for a technical person).
There r slot of people looking for 2nd user cars and need to know how good is the car after 3-7 years of use.
Thx again
Jesus I love these videos, seriously. I prefer obscene horsepower impractical ridiculousness, but these videos are so well presented I find myself learning about cars I have literally zero interest in owning. Great channel :)
Just test drove this car last weekend and its very impressive specially for the price; really feels premium specially compared to everything else in the segment.
love the new camera work! the hood looking through the windshield shot is awesome. and the end...well that's when I give up and make my wife put it back together.
This guy is great. He's down to earth and not one of those show offs that say"Mazda flew me down here" crap.
great camera angles ! love the in depth review. keep it up savegegeese
Excellent review, thanks a lot. I am going to test drive one tomorrow. After a lot of research I might have found my new car!
Pier-Luc Montgrain - well? Did you buy one after all? If so, how do you like it?! A salesman is bringing an ‘18 CX-5 GT to my house today for me to test drive. Can’t wait!
This is the best looking Crossover in segment!!! Fantastic job with review👍
aaaaaaand I just bought a 2018.
I want wagons to come back.
@Alexandre Potvin Some markets get a Mazda 6 wagon. Looks very nice.
Mazda 6 estate? Or wherever you live doesn’t have that? I really feel bad for the US market. Just look at their shitty VW passat hahaha, in most other markets, they get a lot nicer passat.
I want a levorg In the usa so badly
One the best reviews I ve seen. Indeed. Excellent
Wow. Impressive review. You really put effort into it. Really appreciate the look under the car.
Any issues until now?
@@joepearlzz8504 nope. I purchased a 2018 Mazda CX5 and loved it. I upgraded to a 2023 CX5 Turbo Signature and love this one too. I also own a 2021 CX30. I wouldn’t change to a different brand for anything.
i like this guy for the details even the date is 5/17/2017 if u know what i mean cx 5 2017 i am not sure if he meant to do it or its just a coincidence
love the detailed reviews you do . awesome
thanks
Great review again man ! I laughed my ass off with Turbowksi comments. I own a 2016 CX-5 for 2 years now and I cant be happier with it, I get better milage than my previous 2010 Mazda 3 and on regular gas. I will definitely upgrade mine to this one in a couple of years from now. I totally agree with you on the lack of a cover for the dead pedal. Now one more thing: is it just me, or the infotainment system doesnt have a CD player now?
Greetings from Chile (where by the way this new CX-5 isnt available yet until late july or august).
Oscar Wolff Mellado No CD player available.
Red is always kind of a hard color for a car to look good in but damn does every Mazda i've seen in this color pull it off.
Scott!
These things are a blast to drive!
Man, this was beautifully filmed. Watching in 4k.
Great video work. I enjoyed the new angles such as the external passenger side video.
Quality review. Made me laugh whilst being entertained and informed.
As always a great review. Love the new cameras, especially the suspension shots.
"someone did some hallucinogenic or got beat in the head before designing it" 🤣🤣 another great review thank you
You cruising around in a mazda with your vapes (in passenger seat of course)? Fury EDGE!
Great balanced review, although I don't recall you covering braking performance. I always love your buried nuggets of dark humor.
+blitzbbffl Brakes are same as previous gen, feel is natural. No red flags.
savagegeese best car reviews on TH-cam.
Great review, and comedy - you and Scott had me dying a couple of times there ;)
I just got this car in the same color and I absolutely love it!!!
karmbaby I’m looking into a 2016 Mazda6 do you recommend?
The host knows more about the mechanics of the car than the so-called mechanic. If the lift segment was skipped this wouldn't take anything away from this channel.
Great review! I own the cx 5 diesel for a month, great car, great engine, everything...but there is no cover for death pedal...
Cheers!
What about cylinder deactivation
The new CX-5 is improved, but needs the 2.5L turbo found in the CX-9 as an engine option for the higher trim level models.
And it's getting it for 2019!
'The front bumper and grill are massive.' Six years later Toyota/Lexus say hold my beer. lol
