I think he is right but Dr Thomas Cleary’s lecture on “slavery in Islam”. Dr Cleary makes a distinction between cattle slavery (as practiced in the west) and Domestic slavery (as was practiced by Islam) and he is right that domestic slavery was a way to reintegrate victims of war into society. However what Imam Tom doesn’t mention is that the Quran and the Hadith make it crystal clear that one of the best ways to get close to Allah, is to free slaves. And The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah says, 'I will be against three persons on the Day of Resurrection: -1. One who makes a covenant in My Name, but he proves treacherous. -2. One who sells a free person (as a slave) and eats the price, -3. And one who employs a laborer and gets the full work done by him but does not pay him his wages.' "
And don’t think slavery is abolished now… now there’s economic slavery. Millions of undeveloped countries work like slaves to sustain the economies of the developed nations. It’s slavery in disguise.

It is a result of foreign ideology from primarily the West.
The teachings of Islam would solve all of these issues, only if the Muslims unite under Tawheed and put aside any Bid’aah and return to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Look at how refugees integrated in Poland. I know its not exactly how Islam teaches but its similar. People, mostly women and children came and were taken into homes of Polish people. They were given a lot, for Free. But resentment in the nation didnt rose, cause they wanted to work and assimilate .
But it was possible cause we live in 22st century and women have a lot of oportunities to work, Poland is a really safe country and children came be taken care of. But what in different Times? Only Islamic way of dealing with this issue would bring similar results. And religion is ment for all times, not only ours, isn't it?
I really appreciate Islamic rulings, even though Im not a Muslim.

One can make a temporal argument. Ownership/bondmenship existed in history for vast passages of times; centuries! Even today there is slavery, but does man think he will not return to that state? Who’s to say? - what will be the state of non-combatants after war or during war, or slaves? Lawlessness. But you’re re-conceptualization and contextualixarion is superb and correct and honest to the tradition.

    Quote from a book:
European women who live in the East and often complain of Arab servants would be surprised to hear of the devoted lifetimes given by these people (i.e. Arab slaves) to their native masters. They enter a household and become part of it, and think of no private life beyond; and if they happen to be bad at things like valeting or waiting, this is taken as a dispensation of Providence, is borne as one bears the unfortunate deficiencies of a son or daughter, and does not interfere with the natural kindliness of the relationship. I have never heard an Arab speak roughly to his servant, even under severe trials of patience. The Queen of Iraq, when I was there, had a particularly bad cook, so much so that King Faisal offered to send her his own excellent one instead; but the queen, a gentle and charming woman, was attached to the cook's wife and used to go with her to the cinema now and then, and refused the exchange. In the Hadhramaut, a small slave or servant is given to every infant member of any well-to-do family, and they grow up devotedly together.
Taken from 'The Southern Gates of Arabia: A Journey in the Hadhramawt', Ch 3.

Best explanation of the islamic view on slavery, well done Tom, now I understand why our prophet ( pbuh ) did not ban it, As cruel as slavery was to have totally banned it would have lead to more problems, Islam`s approach of reforming slavery was the pragmatic choice so that it did not end up being like slavery as practiced by the Europeans in the Americas, indeed Allah is All Wise

This is the most sickening, disgusting comment I have ever read on TH-cam. Slavery is a CRIME against humanity itself. Have you ever read about how moslems moslems enslaved millions of black Africans - much more than the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade? The moslem slave trade lasted over 1,500 years in which estimates state almost 100 MILLION lives were destroyed. Have you read about how moselsm would capture innocent, free people in central Africa, march them chained up to the east African coast, then CASTRATE the males before loading them on to sinking dhow ships to be sold off in the Gulf and wider Indian Ocean in their millions?
Now, if your Prophet explicitly states slavery should not be banned- then your prophet is NO GOOD and is also a criminal like the moslem slave traders.

@@BinuJasimmanual labor will always be important, even within Europe there is demand for manual labor. Also they aren't meant to undergo tedious tasks that's not the purpose of the system, the system was designed as a way to bring these people under the same roof as Muslims to see the benefit of Islam. Sure they would work in those days, but just the same amount as the one who maintains them. If let's say the ummah eventually unites, and definitely there would be wars against non Muslims because a united Muslim ummah is their worst nightmare, these refugees would be taken into homes, they would assist in home chores, or day to day businesses of their maintainers, the fact that there's less work doesn't mean the system becomes extinct.

A lot of things sheikh Tom explained here I hadn’t fully understood until now like what رق is in reality with regards to modern times mashaAllah. Allahu Akbar how we have solutions for every situation. I would say however that everything Allah made halal is good and everything he made haram is bad/dirty as our great scholars of Islam have described it. I do see how though that halal doesn’t always mean we will like it or make us comfortable such as a woman who’s husband takes on a second wife she may hate it but Allah made this halal for reasons that benefit the man and society as a whole.

What if the female slave doesn’t want to have Sex with her master? Which woman wants freely have Sex with somebody who killed her husband, brother, father or all of them?
What about the women whose husbands are still alive?
What if a female slave has got children? Has the Master the duty to keep them all together or can he separate them? Like for example one son goes to one master, the daughter goes to another one and so on. Would it not be cruel?
Can a Muslim free a slave which doesn’t want to become a Muslim or can a Muslim only free a slave who converts to Islam?
Is there a tool which can guarantee, that slaves will be threated well?

1- assimilation and being owned like a property are complete opposites.

3- if assimilation was the goal why umar enforced "not-slave" girls to be bare breasted.

      1. A bullshit explanation of islamic riq
If they are owned like a property, then why they are having same food and clothes
If they are property, then why they are not mistreated or overworked, but should be treated well
If they are owned like property, then why they can take legal action for a breach of their rights, and may be freed as a result
If they were property, then why they can get married if their owner consents
If they were property, then why there guilty of crimes can only be given half the punishment that would be given to a non-slave
If they are owned, then why female slave cannot be separated from her child while it is under 7 years old
If they are property, then why Islamic law allows slaves to get their freedom under certain circumstances
Our prophet Muhammad said [He will not enter Paradise who behaveth ill to his slaves. The Companions said, 'O Apostle of God! have you not told us, that there will be a great many slaves and orphans amongst your disciples?' He said, 'Yes; then be kind to them as to your own children, and give them to eat what you eat yourselves. The slaves that say their prayers are your brothers.
Be kind to slaves as to your own children...and those that say their prayers are your brethren.
They (slaves or servants) are your brothers, and Allah has put them under your command. So the one under whose hand Allah has put his brother, should feed him of what he eats, and give him dresses of what he wears, and should not ask him to do a thing beyond his capacity. And if at all he asks him to do a hard task, he should help him therein.'
'There are three categories of people against whom I shall myself be a plaintiff on the Day of Judgement. Of these three, one is he who enslaves a free man, then sells him and eats this money'.

The issue is that this brother is not black and likely does not know the damage his nonchalant attitude does to black people who have been bombarded with accusations that it is exchanging one slave master for another to be Muslim. How about telling black people that Muhammd (SAW) was raised by a black woman? How about talking about her son Usamah (RAA)? How about talking about the black grandmother of Umar (RAA)? Do that! THis forces tribes to be at the mercy of large caliphate and take people into slavery, this was done in the Arab skave trade in North Africa, meaning if the small tribe doesn't join the big caliphate they die, then when Islam want to band something like Alcohol or Zina its bans it straight up,why doesn't it band slavery straight up, o have heard sheik say if slavery was banned instantly it will shake the stability of the nation, his point was it was abolished gradually, that means if I was born a thousand years ago as a black muslim I will be a slave, at the mercy of my master if he decides to free me or not

Slavery in any form is bad regardless of how it is worded. We should strive to live in a world society built on justice no matter what your race, creed, or color maybe. We should only participate in things that will produce contructive results an guarantees that the people who need the most help get the help they need.

We could define the essence of slavery as an institution in which persons are divested of their freedom and are owned by another. That is, people become property. This definition can include the phenomenon of slavery in European or Islamic (legal) cultures. We can then analyze the properties of slavery within these various cultural milieus. However, we shouldn't pretend that there aren't shared core meanings. This will only confuse people further. It was only permissible for free persons to be indentured through the type of processes described by the speaker. However, Muslims could, in principle, acquire already enslaved persons being sold in internal and external markets freely. Though, as the speaker mentioned, Islamic law had clear directives, laws and ethics related to their treatment.

How to deal with Muslim refugees is much more obviously related to muhajirin. *Chapter: It is permissible to have intercourse with a female captive after it is established that she is not pregnant, and if she has a husband, then her marriage is annulled when she is captured*
*Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah her pleased with him) reported that at the Battle of Hanain Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent an army to Autas and encountered the enemy and fought with them. Having overcome them and taken them captives, the Companions of Allah's Messenger (may peace te upon him) seemed to refrain from having intercourse with captive women because of their husbands being polytheists. Then Allah, Most High, sent down regarding that:*
*" And women already married, except those whom your right hands possess (iv. 24)" (i. e. they were lawful for them when their 'Idda period came to an end).*

In Somali culture, when tribe wars would occur, prisoners of war would be tooken to prevent the opposition from regrouping and coming back in the future due to their resentment. This is also why they hated having daughters, because when they lost a war, their women would be taken and produce offspring for their enemies, making their enemies strong again.

I’m just wondering why Allah wouldn’t allow these captives/wives of combatants to simply choose what they wanted to do as opposed to have to go into the believer’s house and become part of his household? If they didn’t have a good chance of surviving on their own, that is fine, but they should have been able to choose what they wanted to do, no?

I mean what you said sounds closer to what isis is doing than what international law dictates, and assume we have a better model for taking care of captives after wars, would you abandon all the Islamic laws related to slavery or do you aim for establishing a slave market once khilafa is established?
