Can Muslims Survive the Liberal Inquisition? with Imam Tom Facchine

  • Many Muslims living in the West have become aware that the ideas of tolerance, individualism, liberal multiculturalism and freedom of religion - all liberal notions - have their limits when it comes to our community. A series of tensions, from depictions of the Messenger (saw) in offensive cartoons and the teaching of sexual practices at odds with our faith in schools, has brought into focus how there remains an incompatibility between the ever-increasing demands of the liberal state and the Muslim community.
To help us understand these tensions, Imam Tom Facchine, an imam and convert to Islam helps us understand the liberal state. He finished his BA in Political Science and was granted the opportunity to study at the Islamic University of Madinah from 2015-2020, where he obtained his BA from the Faculty of Shariah. Imam Tom is the Research Director of Islam and Society at the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research. He is also a resident scholar and imam of Utica Masjid (New York state).

Alhamdulillah, what an excellent episode! Imam Tom hit the nail on the head with his examination of the fundamental flaws of liberalism, uncovering truths that liberals in the comments find uncomfortable. We've all witnessed it. The moment a liberal encounters someone who dares to challenge their worldview, the "tolerance" dissipates. Couldn't agree more with his point about the lack of inclusivity within liberalism. While it claims to champion diversity and fairness, it often shuts down any differing opinions that don't align with its preconceived notions.

yeah, sure. what's up with the condecending tone? the liberal values allowed for you to speak in this manner on this platform. you just don't like the results of some liberties.(abortion being normalised despite it being closer to a tragedy. but again looking at the circumstances in the society, having more mouths to feed is not always that easy) but we are at least in the process of achieving that(a perfect system to benefit all humans) after 2-3 centuries of existing. islam after 1400 years still looks like 7th century Arabia.
anyway, i posted a comment before you. go to the "newest comments" and look after it. and please reply to my points if you have time. i would appreciate it

today's liberals have mutated liberalism. but don't you find it ironic that muslims claim divine revelation and apparently get that wrong all the time [supposedly]. it is interesting your husband calls this an inquisition. have the liberals actually killed any muslims yet? but muslims have killed lots of liberals. speaking of homos, what did you think of the pulse night club attack in orlando?

Liberalism is a path to overcome suffer, nothing more or less. To get happy in this life. To me it would be wonderful for Muslims beeng liberated. You would be very helpful for the world I guess. Not like the Americans or the Europeans... I bet you would care for your parents and children ❤❤❤ this how I see more than 90 percent of the Muslim and Christians also. The liberating shouldn't be exclusive to rich people to make more money. It should be given to normal and altruistic people for a better planet ❤❤❤

This is the first time for me to this channel & hearing imam Tom makes me sad abt our umma & I wonder why many even thousands of muslims are willing there life & sacrifice death to go to Europe or west as a migrant ... its sore issue in muslim world I knw.
I heard that migrating to another land in order to maintain your religion is kind of a worship.. but unfortunately its the other way round to us muslims as a whole.
We need new breed of political leaders in muslim world that fear Allah Almighty. We all need to recognise that the sad thing is we are the ones to blame. Who blindly follows political leaders or partys.. its a form of tribalism that our prophet forbade, but no one seems to care abt The MBS's & el sisi's of our umma. Shame on to us 😪

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:31 🏫 Liberal values and the Muslim community clash on issues like prayer in schools, holidays recognition, and sexuality education.
03:13 🤝 Liberals want to secularize Islam, creating a version of the religion that aligns with their values, which is why they push for "Progressive Islam."
11:22 🗽 Neutrality doesn't exist; liberal ideology relies on secularization to fit other value systems into a framework that it can govern.
15:21 👁️ Liberalism's view of humanity as material beings shapes its definition of rights and values, which can clash with Islamic values.
17:23 🔒 Liberal tolerance isn't absolute; it has limits, and secularization is often the prerequisite for tolerating a belief system or religion.
21:30 🏛️ Compromising with the liberal state varies in degrees, and some compromises may erode the essence of Islam.
22:26 🕌 There are different forms of compromise, including accepting citizenship, but some compromises may lead to the secularization of Islam.
23:43 🇺🇸 Living in the West, like the United States, can provide space to establish Islam without extreme compromise, depending on individual choices.
26:03 🏡 Intentionally choosing to live in Muslim communities and building Islamic institutions can help preserve the faith in Western contexts.
27:29 🇬🇧 Muslims in the UK have generally maintained their faith through generations, despite living in liberal states.
30:06 🗳️ In the U.S., liberalism is split between progressive Democrats and conservatives, revealing a tension within liberalism's relationship with the state.
32:28 📜 The U.S. Constitution is rooted in liberal principles but has limitations and historical contradictions regarding human rights.
34:46 🏛️ Liberalism's manifestations can vary among U.S. states due to the federal system, leading to different emphases on government involvement.
37:14 🤝 Navigating political life in liberal states requires Muslims to negotiate their rights within the framework of liberalism while maintaining their beliefs.
39:54 🌈 While Muslims may encounter challenges in liberal environments, there is room for courage and moral conviction to stand for their beliefs without compromising fundamental principles.
41:20 🤝 It's important for Muslims to be ready to make sacrifices in order to live according to their beliefs.
43:12 💬 Communication and principled stand are crucial when dealing with societal issues.
45:04 🌍 Islam can challenge the liberal project of secularization due to its emphasis on submission and righteousness.
47:17 💭 Nostalgia for a time when religious morals had a significant influence on society is problematic and unrealistic.
51:55 🔄 The idea of rewinding to a previous societal state is not practical; instead, Muslims should focus on addressing current issues.
58:57 📜 We need to think about how to move forward in addressing societal challenges, rather than attempting to reverse the secularization process.
01:00:18 🔍 Discussing and debating the ideas of liberalism within the Muslim community is essential, and there's room for more emphasis on this topic in organizations like Yaqeen Institute.
01:01:10 🧐 Many Muslims have internalized liberal values without realizing it, especially in academic institutions, impacting their approach to Islam.
01:02:03 📚 There's a need for Muslims in social sciences and humanities to critically examine structures through an Islamic worldview and communicate this effectively.
01:03:25 💬 Muslims should engage in discussions about liberalism and autonomy and explain why certain ideas may undermine Islam.
01:04:18 🌍 While Muslims can exist within liberal states, it's important to recognize that the freedom they enjoy is often not due to liberalism but to historical factors.
01:06:08 💡 Muslims have the opportunity to establish independent Muslim scholarship and institutions in the West but need to prioritize it and act with sincerity.

Thank you for this informative discussion! Just a couple comments: (1) Muslims moving to the US solely for dunya reasons has had ripple effects, since their deen was probably not on point to begin with, and (2) some of our kids are leaving Islam because of their negative interactions with Muslims in Islamic schools and in the community. And let me add that (3) many of our community leaders, masjid presidents, board members etc. aren’t doing their job effectively, so we have neglected youth, languishing reverts, disgruntled women and sad kids while those in leadership positions are focused on self-serving projects and embroiled in petty disputes. There are amazing communities, but on the whole we really need to up our game. Because (4) not every Muslim family is in a position to choose their location.

@@michaelmalzahn-tx2zi that’s an idea. But it’s not an option for everyone. The US has a large and growing number of converts/reverts with varying economic resources, family commitments, personal circumstances, etc. Muslim countries are not 100% Islamic either as Imam Tom mentioned. They present other challenges and increasingly some of the same challenges as here in the US. And one thing we still have here that many Muslim countries lack is freedom of religion. We need to build robust communities and institutions here.

I agree with most of your comments but I am not sure why you felt it was necessary to say "some of our kids are leaving Islam because of their negative interactions with Muslims in Islamic schools." @@saburabdul-salaam2418 I mentioned it because I’ve seen this. I agree the home environment is generally more important, but it depends on the kid and what they go through with peers. Sadly, my own girls experienced more bullying and toxic exclusionary behavior from Muslim kids than from non-Muslim and I’ve seen the same with other family members and children of friends. I also saw this as a teacher in Islamic schools - bullying, racism, cliquishness, and arrogant, judgmental attitudes in different communities in different states over the last 30 years. It breaks my heart. I could get very specific…. If people want to bury their heads in the sand, this stuff will continue to be a factor in people running away from the religion.

I made Hijra in 2018 to Indonesia, I don’t regret it at all. Yes Indonesia is hyper secular and makes the red line very clear for Ulema, but I find that there is a higher probability of passing on values and ideas that are pleasing to Allah if I raise my children within a culture that’s traditions are inherently connected to Islam.
Because my children would have grown up around my family who are non Muslims, I made the decision to sacrifice economically with hopes of increasing in Faith. I can say for a surety Allah has made a way for me from means I would never have thought and given me clarity in many of the misconceptions I had due to the many years of absorbing liberal secular ideas. Stepping outside the box, so to say is some time the best way to see what it truly is.
However, I have to say my situation is very different than someone with a good Muslim family living in the Occident. Although, I would not totally throw out the corpus of Hijra (not saying Imam Tom is doing that) from experience I say Hijra is a valid option especially for young Muslim men seeking a spouse.
Thank you Imam Tom, you always make things clear and concise. May Allah grant you success dunya wa ahkira.

Brother Jalal, can we have a video on waqfs? What is a waqf? Why do awqaf exist? How do awqaf function? Which are the countries apart from US, which allow for the establishment of a waqf? Questions like that.
Also Imam Tom, please release the pdfs that will allow Muslim children to know and defend their faith.

@@michaelmalzahn-tx2zi Anti Racist Anti Biased, but it is not what it sounds like. Just like the imam said in this talk, they are not trying to get rid of bias or racism, but rather realign the intolerances. I am a teacher and I was told to take all pictures of and representations of white people out of my class and replace with only brown people and brown stories and brown history. When the trainer was asked if this would exclude the white children in our classes, she said "well some cups need to be filled first". I was told to stop using certain language in the classroom like "line leader" or "challenging work" because that is discrimination, and to begin "educating" any parents who pushed back because their beliefs are wrong.

@@bebrave1622 Yep they are using minorities and established discrimination laws for racial groups to push their agendas and bully parents and the wider society into conforming to their ideology.
The more I interact with the left the more I find them to be the most racist group out there, because they change their tone for darker skinned people and assume that you don't understand basic math and science concepts and live without the internet.
Why else would they explain basic math concepts you learn in middle school to darker skinned students of university/college doing engineering courses? I see the way they talk to my friends who look as white as the Europeans. Then my friends tell them they are Arabs and there is a tone shift and magically the conversation is "simplified". It is as if they met a new person. We started to pay attention to these liberal arts students who pretty much run all the events in the university. When they interact with one of our darker friends they start with the "simplified talk" immediately. I mean you can see a stark difference in the way they talk to you based on your accent and skin tone. Why would we be in these science events after hours if we didn't enjoy and understand science? You can see what this training is teaching them.
They see themselves as the only saviours of the non-whites and must help the non-whites to evolve to the level of the whites. Must be a bias from their evolution theory. it makes people feel stupider and become stupider. They want to keep the minorities as their babies who need their help forever. Makes sense why blacks who grow up in these countries have problems and immigrant do better. There is a system who keep them down and these antiracism groups are the guards who keeping the system in place. They are not fighting against it, they actually made it worse in the last couple of years by completely appearing to be racist against whites but it was to keep the non-whites from escaping from their nets and ideology.
Anyways, there are many agendas they are running at the same time. To turn people into nothing but boxes that can be grouped into special groups and they become their representatives. But when we have our group identity and want to self-represent they argue that we need to be individuals and group thing is primitive. Then when we are alone in their groups and want to uphold our individual rights, they argue that our individual values and beliefs are primitive and we are being divisive and making others uncomfortable.
Conclusion: Only liberals can be the leaders (AKA Masters) and we must be the followers (AKA Slaves). They just put non-white liberal leaders and expect us to follow as if we don't have our own beliefs and values. And of course, liberalism is just an objective fact not a subjective belief system 😅

    Narrated Thawban:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and cast enervation (al-wahn) into your hearts. Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation). Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): He replied: *Love of the world and dislike of death*
    Sunan Abi Dawud 4297
    Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)
We are not supposed to value a comfortable dunya over an honorable death defending the truth. If the Right share more of our values but want us dead, then we either assist them in protecting our values and defend ourselves when they try to kill us or we at least stay neutral. We won't face any punishment for being killed. It's actually the exact opposite. Being killed while defending Islam is the highest honor.

    Islamic Perspective on Freedom
As a Muslim Islam gives us the right of 'Freedom of Thought & Speech !
The Islamic concept of freedom of expression is a expression to allow all Muslims ..
The superior Islamic concept that should be more prevalent to access for the propagation of virtue and truth.
Rather than spread or excite the evil and wicked virtues .
For Instance : According to 'Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jama'ah' the Prophet Muhammad RAS (pbuh) said :
"The best people are those living in my generation, then those coming after them,
(Tābiʿun), and then those coming after (the second generation)"
The difference between a Liberal and a Conservative ...
The Conservatives believe structure is based on 'everyday politics' with undertones of a monotheistic inclination.
In which the greater importance of stability, and promotion of the law and order to protect private property.
Whereas the 'Liberals' believe and interaction questions the universal access to health care for their personal,
health. And this 'health care system' should not be dependent upon one's financial resources,
Therefore this includes the support of government intervention and funds.
    ...

For all of those who think it is ideal if Muslim women are not financially dependent on men:
Would it be ideal if Muslim men were not sexually dependent on their women? For example, would it be ideal if men could purchase (at low cost) harems of docile life-like forever-young sex robots?
How would you respond to Muslim men who justified this by saying such robots are necessary to give men true independence, such that they are not forced to stay in relationships with women who are rude, jealous, controlling, manipulative, fat, old, or ugly?
How would you respond to Muslim men who said that Muslim women need to "step up their game" such that men choose to be with them instead of a robot that is more friendly, beautiful, young, and thin?
The cop out answer is to say sex robots are haram, but there are other conceivable halal alternatives that would do the same thing: flood men with cheap alternatives. Obviously, such alternatives would weaken and ultimately destroy marriage because it takes away the dependence that men have on women for sex.
But that is literally what giving women financial independence does; it makes them independent from men. And that's why no society or religion ever did give women that independence, except for our current dystopia.

Wonderful discussion. The issue of raising Muslim kids is a little more nuanced so I disagree a bit with the Imam on the reality of Muslim lived experiences. Some of what he says is true but there are also pockets of rather large and active communities in the US where parents don’t have such stark choices. For example in the DC region and outer suburban communities there’s a strong Muslim presence where parents have access to good jobs, good schools, but also where we have built strong centers of religion. These are some of the wealthiest communities in the nation and you’ll see plenty of Muslim kids in public schools who also have access to religious schools and education. We need to build critical mass in more communities. How else will we attract more people to our deen if we’re so insular?

asalaam alaikum, thank you again for these discussions, however, I must state clearly again that Allah is not a deity - a deity implies an idol of worship, hence to consider Allah a deity would be to approach idolatry. I can understand why a former Christian would make this statement, but it's not a correct understanding of Allah - it is clearly stated in the Qur'an that Allah is creation, hence why, again, in the Qur'an, it is stated that Allah does not and will not explain all of creation to us and how the cosmos came to be etc (I am building off what is stated in al-Kahf), because that would require us to be able to see into other dimensions of reality, which we humans are incapable of -- we can make models and assumptions, but we will never witness an alternate dimension beyond the 3rd/4th dimensional time-space. Allah is the cosmos/creation itself, not a Zeus-like figure given to us through Judeo-Christian beliefs. This understanding in no way invalidates morality or afterlife -- I am not allowed to kill anyone I please, for example, unless of course my life is threatened by them attacking me under conditions of oppression. I can submit to ensuring paradise in this life for those that follow after me (who will remember you in an act of embodied afterlife, hence the significance of martyrs), for a less provocative example, and indeed, when we ascend in this life or pass on, as some would say, we are not separate from the cosmos, since we are made from the cosmos. We do not say that someone buried is separate from the Earth, for example, that would make no sense, and even if someone were to be cremated, their ashes are not separate from the cosmos or the Earth either. One lives on by returning to the cosmos, if you like, in a way that is beyond the material human body -- we contribute to the soil, for example, or air and so forth. As Allah made us, we may die as an individual, but are still part of Allah's creation after that individual death.

(i tried to post this on one of his videos' comment section and did not appear. hope he replies here)
where can i find you online to talk in private? on facebook messenger maybe. or even here, but i want you to go back to this comment and reply SINCERELY to my questions even if you think i overwhelm you(somehow). and in regards to bias, i developed a sense of disgust towards the religion from my own mind(i was raised in a Christian background: Romanian Orthodox. but lost some faith in the creed. mainly for the 1st and 2nd points in this list), no "evil freemasons" involved or "Shaytan" because yeah...
anyway, let's start with the fundamentals and then... i think i would enumerate them randomly after:(disclaimer: some of these are shared with other beliefs)
    1. how can free will(and reward/punishment based on that) exist in a case of an all-knowing, all-wise and all-just God?
    2. evolution(including that of humans) is a proven fact. what are you going to do with the humans made of clay?
    3. if a prophet is only sent to his tribe, why is injeel, a greek word for a book sent to the Jews, actually a thing?
    4. if the role of the Messiah was to give to the Jews rulership over their homeland, why didn't he do it? why just appear 2000 years ago and through a "misunderstanding" to lead millions(until 600AD and billions until today) to h3ll?
    5. why was he born of a virgin? and what are the theological conclusions of this? he was also sinless(19:19) unlike Muhammad (48:2)
    6. why does Quran plagiarise from Jewish texts and Christian cannonical and gnostic gospels?(especially since Waraqah ibn Nawfal was Muhammad's aquitance) the birds-from-clay is from the infancy gospel of Thomas.
    7. why couldn't Muhammad give up on his pagan tendency? adopting the Kaaba, a house of idols, as part of the Abrahamic creed. also kissing random meteorites. or the satanic verses thing.
    8. if "Sun in a murky water" is metaphorical why be placed in the Quran? weren't there greater issues to talk about?(it feels like the hadith does a better job at that) literally the controversial d3ath of Jesus is "properly"covered by one verse 4:157 and even that does not go into details. there is also the thig about Gog and Magog failing to appear after Dhul Qrnayn called for the construction of that IRON wall.
    9. a BARRIER separating waters of diffeent salinities? they mix... and what do you mean barrier? even if they don't mix the barrier is the salty-water itself, not some other material.
    10. 18:50 Allah commanding the angels and getting angry at the jinn. it looks like Muhammad did not know if he wanted to make Stan into a renegade angel or another being.
    11. going back to the 3rd point, why is Zabur a book on its own? and why was it revealed? isn't the point of it all about the songs being composed by David?
there are more to talk about, but you might think of me as an "islamophobe". whatever that is. apparently criticising a belief or culture(ideology-folklore-practices) is such a revolting crime, right? a bit of a hypocrisy considering... many things.
anyway, i would appreciate greatly if you were to reply.

@@saihinadir also, i am sorry for pointing it out, but shouldn't you, like a compassionate fellow human, try a bit harder? my (after)life is on the line. but nooooo. you don't wanna waste your half an hour(or how much it takes) to save my soul. you would rather pray those 5 prayers ripped off from Zoroastrianism(who believes that 50/10=5 thing?) at least if you were buddhists or something, retreating and meditating in your mountains. but the creed asks for intoxication of others' lands. waging war or infiltrating(not that i am against discourse. but taqqiya is proven to be an actual tactic. i notice it with those in speakers' corner as well. Mohammed Hijab would speak of preservation to some clueless guy and when speaking to Yasir Qadhi the qirat's are mentioned) in other societies.
and i see it as a bit of a duty to see what are your motives. because if people really try to be unbiased and do their research in two weeks everyone would accept evolution, that the monotheistic religions don't really tie things well
(see free will) and that good morals can arise without some of these "guys". is it because of France. USA and UK trying to get your oil? because of that you try to avenge yourselves through religion? to rally up the naive folk? is it Arab pride? or... those that lost their culture to the Arabs(since when are the Egyptians Arabs?) or... tell me? what's your bias?

@@porphyry17 no one asks you to believe, you are seeking an argument on your own. I wont try because you are arguig to satisfy the frivolity of your ego, not to actually exchange. The way you ask your questions shows that you already are deadset on an idea and unwilling to change. I suggest going elsewhere other than YT if you just want to argue. I personally dont seek to save you from hell. I wont answer any further. Save your time and do somethg meaningful.

@@saihinadir my friend, i can no longer be "neutral" if every time i "corner" you with the very things that depart me from what-you-call "the true faith" you just evade an argument. this only proves to me your faith is tribalistic. of course, that following that, i should be suspicious. my tone sounded mocking at times because 1. the points i criticise are often times just ridicullous("how can you really believe this" type of thing. like sun in a murky water) 2. that there is tradition based bias. you are adamant to keep to your beliefs because your ancestors did. or because you dedicated your life to it. or just because you were convinced by it. if you wre wrong just admit. you go to sleep thinking 6 of the 8 billion people in this world might go to h3ll. what makes you think you got it right? 3. as i said, this hit-and-run attitude. you always talk from above but when asked to protect your beliefs you brush it off.
you really believe that i am influenced by Satan or something. humans are humans. i am not a videogame NPC. i too had my existential crisis. for a 7yo to think that i would end up in the same spot like my dog(2 meters underground) or for a 10yo to see humans made of clay make no sense, for a 15yo thinking that the idea of a soul is not that far away from the consciousness we see in animals as well, the brain making connections between its different funtions as a body.
i might end up thinking that if God exists(one that makes sense. not one that. again look at the 1st point on free will) he would not concern himself with humans the way he does in some religions.
and for real, you're giving me ultimatums and proclamations? "i'm not gonna read anymore because the propaganda got to you"? what propaganda? what i said is from Quran, sahih hadiths, history, science.
if you want "propaganda" look at the hollow eyes of some of your believers. like the naive folk that thinks that if their mindset about the world is proven flawed, their mind will break and become depressed. or if they give up those beliefs they would go rampage and commit crimes(apparently they commit crimes for their beliefs as well. if you know what i mean)

In the name of Allah The Beneficent The Merciful
Having the choice of declaration of my pronouns he and him makes me feel good and happier
That gives me the opportunity of freedom to choose who I am and I want to be
    That is good
I must say here that freedom is a gift from Allah to the mankind
    Allah is Greater
I have chosen to submit my self in islam to Allah
And this does not restrict me in any way to my peers who have chosen to submit themselves to their forefathers and founding fathers religion and that is secularism I can understand that is their choice and their way
It gives me a better cause to argue with them and express my opinions when I declare that there is no god except Allah and Muhammad is His servant and Messenger and to challenge them
However when it comes to social status and state secularism I still need my Liberal views to argue with the government that I as a Muslim should be able to participate with my belief and feelings using the Scripture of Allah into the law making process and I while relying on the guidance and the verses of the Scripture which I believe The Glorious Qur'an must be free to do so
For instance in Turkey adultery is not a crime neither an offence
Whereas in my religion and the Scripture it is
So my argument with the verses of the Glorious Qur'an to be able to participate in the law making process and I should be able to give a law offer to make adultery illegal in the voting in the Assembly of Turkey TBMM
Here is the most important part that is is the President of Turkey and the TBMM will ever allow me to participate and break the rule of secularism on forbidden participation with the Holy Book ?
    This is my right
My right of inclusiveness and equality and participation which the secular democratic constitutional countries deny me
