    My theory is that Sky-High Sundae's anti-grav (or low-grav) was to prevent it from being too unplayable. The overall thinness of the track combined with the constant jumps makes it seem like it was way more suited to Tour's forced safety rails imo.

    • @pengoschwortz4734
      @pengoschwortz4734 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      The minute I saw the track I knew they made it for Tour simply because it’s all about doing tricks
      I felt that the anti-gravity was only there to shut people up about the lack of MK8’s definitive feature

    • @doomse150
      @doomse150 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yes, the anti-grav is mostly there to utilize its slow-falling mechanics, that make mid-air corrections of jumps way easier. Also the spin-boosting instead of bumping people makes those narrow paths a lot more manageable.
      But the spin boost railing definitely seemed like a last minute fix, because having it be an obstacle would be way to obnoxious.

    • @jajathenewking6131
      @jajathenewking6131 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I wish they didn't add anti-gravity in this specific track because it feels so awkward to play Sky-High Sundae.
      The anti-gravity should be used where slopes are more prevalent like that beginning part of waluigi's pinball or most of Sky garden.

    • @lunalesombras1150
      @lunalesombras1150 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@doomse150 I think it might actually be due to how 8 is programmed. It doesn't seem like the railing is walls, and any obstacles like racers speed you up while anti-grav is in effect.

      And Tour got Sky High Sundae about a week later than the MK8 DLC, I think. But for one thing, I'm pretty sure there was a datamine that found Sky High Sundae in Tour's files 6+ months ago. For another thing, it's one of the only tracks that drives better in Tour than it does in Mario Kart. It also looks better on the phone graphics than it does in MK8, in my opinion. Also, I really like the track layout for Mario Circuit 3, even if it's one of the worst courses in the game visually. The turns and general layout just feel really great for big bouts of drifting
    Also also, I really *really* dislike Sky-High Sunday. It is so colorful that it's nearing painful, and there's basically nothing really enjoyable about the layout. I'd also like to add that Excitebike Arena is one of my favorite tracks in the game (although I don't really like Baby Park). SHS just really misses the mark for me

    *Waluigi Pinball:*
    First off, I think the fabric-y floor actually fits really well. It reminds me of the floor of an arcade, which I think they might've been going for?
    Waluigi Pinball isn't a normal sized pinball machine, but rather a giant life-sized one. So having a more arcade-y feel to the floor was a nice touch imo. Anyways...
    I think I'm in the minority here, but I think the lighting in the track is bad. It's extremely bright and washed out. It's not _bad_ but I can't say I really like it. Feels like there's way too much bloom. I have the same issue with New York Minute.
    Overall, Waluigi Pinball, while being one of the best upgrades, also was one of the biggest disappointments for me. There's already the often overlooked downfalls of the track (which I assume if what you mentioned in your MKDS video, I can't remember).
    But then there's the fact they didn't remix the music! Yeah Wario Stadium fits just fine, but it doesn't fit as well as a new remix would. The original Wario Stadium remix was arranged specifically to fit Wario as a character. They focused more on the beats than the melody (the sound team actually mentions this on the MK8 soundtrack CD), and there's a distinct extreme sports feel to it. Waluigi Pinball should be more crunchy and arcade-y imo.
    They also didn't include the ball-lost sound effect when you pass through the bumpers at the end of the course, but I'm pretty sure that was a glitch that they might fix in the future.
    I think despite all this, the fact it still manages to be one of the best remastered tracks so far is a testament to how good its theming and presentation is.
    *Snow Land:*
    Definitely one of the best looking courses so far. Makes me think TOUR Merry Mountain is gonna also be one of the better looking tracks in the BCP. Also I don't think I've ever had trouble with the bridge shortcut? the few times I've messed it up, I didn't really lose any time, or fall off the stage or anything.

      nope i still stand by what i said even if some of the retros they have added are questionable.
      mushroom cup: mario kart stadium is a decent basic starter track. water park is pretty underwhelming, boring and slow track. i forget the name of the sweet level but that says a lot about how forgettable it is, thwomp ruins is the only track i can say thats good, even then to compare to other game mushroom cup tracks mushroom gorge from wii, shy guy bazaar from 7, luigi mansion from ds are all better.
      flower cup: mario circuit is just a figure 8 the only thing that stands out is the look. toad harbour is pretty good but its not amazing. twisted mansion is pretty bad, ive never heard anyone say they like it much. shy guy falls is an excellent track, the only one that can compare to the best retros.
      star cup: sunshine airport is pretty good but nothing special, dolphin shoals is underrated but again its not amazing. elecrtodrome on the other hand is overrated, just a worse version of music park, mount wario is a top tier track , its one of the only base game tracks i would choose over most retros. this is the only really good base game nitro cup.
      special cup: cloudtop is a good track i like the theme and sound and the first half of the track is great but the second half is just a big straightaway with boosts and a glide to the end, even the shortcut isnt interesting because its so easy to do. bone dry is one of the worst tracks in the game, bowser castle is just a worse copy of the wii version. rainbow road is the worst one in the game and maybe the whole series.
      the original dlc has better tracks overall but even then i think the original dlc retros are generally better.

    The forced landings after jumps don’t only apply to Sky-High Sundae. In the collision model every trickable surface has a “high-gravity” option which is commonly used in 200cc to avoid the player leaving the lap path and getting accidentally picked up by Lakitu. However, it is especially noticeable in Sky-High Sundae because of the Underwater Gravity. The other 2 maps with underwater gravity (Mute City and Big Blue) don’t use the high-gravity feature much, which is why the large jump at the end of Mute City allows you to go really far. And about the gliding, yeah I agree. The glider path in Mushroom Gorge is specifically set to try and place you down right at the end of the cave. At least they edited the lap path to allow the gap jump

    am genuinely glad that i'm not the only person that noticed the coconut mall cars doing donuts and the Sky High Sunday antigrav being a bit weird. the dumbest part is that on the Tour version, those rail walls are actually walls, making you have to consider what side you take lest you bump into it. like the first time i bumped into those rail walls, i literally was so confused and i fell off the track due to the boost. it's weird how they don't at least have a blue glow to them or something.
    the reason i think your reviews of these DLCs are pretty great so far is that you actually notice all of these important details which i heavily respect, as most people don't really do that.

  • @BronzeSpaceComet
    @BronzeSpaceComet ปีที่แล้ว +73

    I'm not as much of a fan of what they did with Waluigi Pinball. There was so much potential with this track-a fan favorite from the series-that they could've made use of. The absence of anti-gravity is mind-boggling; it would have fit so perfectly. The lighting also seems quite off in certain places, and while the textures definitely look smooth and clean, they're not at the level of detail that the base game has made me come to expect. Also, the reuse of the Wario Stadium song just... hurts. It's a good rendition, sure, but it just wasn't built for this track at all. It's clear that the retro tracks in this DLC are REMASTERS, whereas the retro tracks in the base game were REMAKES, built from the ground-up with new mechanics and twists. That's a crucial distinction to make that I feel a lot of people overlook. This is just... the same Waluigi Pinball we all know very well by now. I really feel Nintendo took the easiest and laziest way out with this DLC.

    • @DaNintendude

      From how much praise I keep seeing Waluigi Pinball getting, sometimes I feel like I'm in the minority when I think the lighting is off for a lot of the stage. Glad to see I'm not alone on that.
      The lack of a remix too is also just such a huge bummer. The sound team for the game even stated that MK8's Wario Stadium remix was arranged specifically to fit Wario, focusing on bombastic beats over emphasizing the melody.
      Yeah it still fits Waluigi Pinball to an extent, but it's not as great as it could be. I honestly think the unremixed DS & MK7 versions fit more. Wario Stadium has that extreme sports, stadium feel to it. While Waluigi Pinball should definitely have more of an arcade-y feel to it.

      This new Waluigi Pinball now looks more like a Las Vegas casino and I don't like it.
      I also hate the new Waluigi cutout passionately. I don't like it being just 2D art, I like it being a 3D image turned into a cutout. The new one also just doesn't look like it belongs.

    1:11 fun fact: this "dynamic challenge" is almost non existing in Wii too. Only the first car can present a challenge as the secon and third car only move on half of the road: the second goes from right to middle and the third goes from left to middle (and viceversa for both of them), meaning that you can use the same strategy in both games. And if you say that the dash panels can give you a risk and reward challenge, you can just use them if the cars aren't there or, you know, not use them?

      Honestly, at this point, having lots of “scrimblo bimblos” or whatever this type of character is probably not that viable for Smash DLC in general anyway because their animations and body structure are not as easily replicatable to future characters, which would have a much lower budget than the base game
      Ironically the booster course pass may have the opposite complaint, where the artstyle is the more simplified, pure “scrimblo bimblo” you’d expect from the main Mario series, as opposed to the more realistic style in 8, whereas in Smash, most of the newer characters, especially the DLC ones, are more realistic/anime than the other characters

It’s looks way more colorful and vibrant than the original! And I like the tracks themselves!

    LMAO I love the cold open cutting to the chase. Reminds me of Dunkey. I really wish people led videos with their honest opinions like that more!
    I can concede Skyhigh Sundae isn't perfect, but I largely enjoy it. I love the vibrant colors, the narrow paths, and how the gravity mechanic makes you feel like you're basically flying for half the time.
    I think an easy fix would be to make the first half regular track, but once you enter that death drop it goes gravity for the rest of the course. It would neatly fix the rail colliding issue and preserve that flying feel I'm talking about! Love how the wafer ramps and ice trays feel.
    Also idk if this is a humble brag but I've had no trouble with the final shortcut in Snow Land. No trouble that didn't seem to be just user error on my part lol.

    Just to say about coconut Mall's new moving cars:
    The donuts, while they don't cover as much area as moving back and forth cars do, are generally larger and more unpredictable when actually playing
    If you're time trialing both hazards don't represent much of a challenge honestly, but during more casual/item based races both versions of the hazards can hit and cost you
    Basically what I'm saying is while they're done a different way it is functionally the same in actual play for the most part imo just my thoughts on it (also admittedly prefer the donuts makes it feel exciting and never was a fan of the back and forth they just always looked off and out of place to me)
