I think a stalemate also happens when there are only the Kings left and maybe some pawns or a few other pieces? I don’t think that’s what applies here though. I’m pretty sure what happened there is that one player was left in a position where their king was not in check, but any move available would have placed the king into check, which results in a draw for some reason. I’ll do some research real quick. I was correct! I’m kinda surprised I remembered that. I just saw another comment explaining this, but I’ll keep this comment here. So yeah, a stalemate happens when a king is not in check, but every available move is illegal since it would put that king into check. Not sure why that’s a draw though, seems like a solid win for the player who’s not in that situation.
Mucus >not sure why it's a draw though It means that players still need to play consciously, even if they're in the endgame with a winning position. Getting rid of stalemate would mean that the objective of chess would no longer be checkmate.

If this was packaged as a wii board game series, with other games like checkers included it would probably be worthy of the wii titles, which tend to be collections based around a singular theme, not a single minigame.
Its a draw because the cpu was not able to move to any spot, but it wasnt checked either. To win you have to make him unable to move while cheking (checkmate)
@Ian Hayes Well that's not how chess works. The game can no longer continue because a player cannot make a move. The reason the game can't continue is because of one players lack of foresight.
I remember Wii chess, yet I’ve never even seen it been played. It just collected dust on the shelf after my dad played it a few times. I was definitely old enough when this game came out to remember it, but somehow it just doesn’t come to memory.

One idea to make the game more wii-related is to have the king be your mii and the opponent being a random mii based off of the difficulty. Matt would obviously be the highest AI difficulty mii. Another idea would to have custom chess modes (with tutorials ofc), similar to the custom modes at chess.com or lichess.org They could also maybe even have a special mode with custom boards with obstacles, but still have the same pieces. You choose where to set up your 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, queen, and king anywhere on your side of the board. Your opponent’s pieces are invisible to the other player until both players are done setting up the board.
A brand new copy of this game from an Amazon like platform in The Netherlands, its €13,99 (15,31), still pretty expensive for a game like this. And it's still €9,99 USED.
U need to have the king in check for check mate. If there are no legal moves for the king to make, but the king isn't being threatened then it's a draw since there are no legal moves to make.
That stalement you got was a very special stalemate. You MUST put your opponent in check to be considered checkmated If your opponent cannot make any valid move (including moves that put you in check) and are not already in check then its a stalemate

That one that ended in a stalemate was because the red pieces had no moves they could make. The red pawn is blocked by the blue king, and as for the red king: If it moves to spaces e3, d4, d5, e5, or f5, it gets taken out by the blue queen. If it moves to spaces f3 or f4, it gets taken out by the blue king. If it moves to space d3, it gets taken out by the blue bishop. Therefore, the king is not in check, but the red team cannot make any moves without sacrificing the king, so the game ends in a stalemate.
If they had made it 3D, added your mii moving the chess pieces in the backdrop, then hell yeah I’d pick it up. But no, it looks like a mobile game your grandpa would play.

A game called "Fritz Chess" was also released for the Wii, in many ways it's similar but it did some things right that Wii Chess failed with, including it being worth the price tag, unique gamemodes, interesting puzzles and a story mode.
I hear a lot about that Wii series recently but somehow the word "Wii Party never comes up. I just checked and it was released I think pretty much everywhere. Yet I never hear you or anyone else talking about it. That kinda surprises me because I used to really enjoy the games it had. Of course, it's essentially just a Mario Party clone but still, I think it's very enjoyable.

In the stalemate situation, the only legal move by the CPU was to move the pawn forward. You would be forced to take their pawn. After the turn ended, the CPU would be unable to move their king without putting it in check, resulting in an SM. Therefore they were not YET in stalemate but would inevitably end up there.
About the draw, the pawn couldn't move forward and the King couldn't move to a place that it isn't in check, while currently not being in check resulting in Red not being able to move. because of this the game ended in stalemate, which is a draw.

In chess, a "stalemate" means that although a player is not in check or checkmate, they cannot make any moves at all, resulting in a pseudo-draw.
There’s one problem though: could the AI not just move the pawn? It doesn’t appear to be blocking a piece, so how is it a draw?

No, the red was moving downwards (looks at the numbers) meaning it’s a draw.
