I remember reading in the Nintendo mag that there was a new Yoshi's Island coming out on DS. I was a huge fan of the port on GBA, so I went with my dad to pick it up. Me being a kid, I saw this game and figured it was the same game, they just renamed it or something. I booted it up and was confused, and played it a bunch of times trying to figure out how to get out of this minigame and start the actual game. I was SO disappointed when I realised what I had.

Oh don’t worry. The actual Yoshi’s Island DS isn’t much better. The soundtrack is forgettable, the levels are long and tedious, and 100 percenting the game will take a couple decades off your life. If you've played the original YI on GBA, it's a pretty big step down.
@@Kaiserin I mean yeah I won't debate that, but it's also not unheard of. Mario Smash Football was known as Mario Strikers in the US, Lylat Wars was Star Fox 64 etc. I just figured it was renamed the same way as those games

This is the first game I ever asked my parents to return to the store. I was so hyped for more Yoshi’s Island, I asked for this game on my birthday and had buyers remorse right away.
I think we exchanged it for bomberman or pokemon dash, both of which I played extensively

Ah. I see someone else has also had the very specific experience of trading pokemon diamond specifically with a friend for a crappy game. This was an experience i never expected to have shared with anyone haha.
I love this as an arcade game. Marathon mode's a ton of fun and I think that chaining sprinting flutter jumps for the time trial mode is actually a legitimately fun challenge-there's actually some legitimately fun tech for a mode that at first glance makes no sense. I was initially disappointed by the total lack of story but once I recognized the game for what it is I was playing it constantly for about a decade. Even now, I still boot it up every now and then.

I bought it for $20 when I was 12 and I hated it because I couldn't figure out how to beat it. Ironically I think I would live it today

The music is standard pokemon music, and while the animations sre nice they most of the time feel like random limbs moving which is odd and a lot of the time worse looking than 3d models

this is... one of the few DS games I've wanted to try out for ages, but just could never find anywhere, no matter what. I liked yoshi in the past, and still do, so for me... seeing this lost game I never got to play covered is worth it! so... ya may not have done the best game trade deal ever... but in turn, you were able to make the best of it... and enlighten people about about a forgotten game, quite... a good thing really!

It's been a while since I've heard anybody talk about Yoshi Touch & Go and I certainly didn't expect to hear anyone trading Pokémon Diamond for it!
It's still a fun enough game, you can still actually buy it on Wii U's Virtual Console at a much better price than it was originally, so that's nice.

This was the first DS game I got. I thought it was fun enough and didn't think much of it. I continued playing my GBA games until I got Pokémon Diamond and New Super Mario Bros awhile after.

While I fell out with Pokemon after gen 6, seeing as Pearl was my first Pokemon game (and I loved it), I really want to re-experience it when/if Gen 4 gets remade. I also thought when I saw this that Yoshi Touch and Go was the Yoshi's Island sequel that featured the classic baby Wario and DK.
Touch and Go felt more like a sequel of Topsy Turvy where the GBA cartridge has a built-in gyroscope(?) inside oddly enough.
Topsy Turvy actually sounds like a pretty cool game just from your description of it

Gen 2 was originally supposed to be the last Pokémon game. That's why it was so ambitious.

I'm gonna be honest. I think the disappointment with Yoshi Touch & Go comes solely from the expectation of a true Yoshi's Island sequel rather than having "little content." Most of the gaming industry is full of short-term gauntlets that relied on replayability (Tetris, Gradius, classic Bomberman, most racing games, etc.) and these were still being made for retail in 2005. Hell, I remember my brother playing the shit out of Bust-a-Move DS around 2007 or so. It was sort of the tail-end of that era though because you can't exactly make any of those games I listed a full retail game these days. I mean, Nintendo turned Tetris into a fucking MMO basically and they had to make it a *free bonus* for their online service.
So I don't think that was the reason Touch & Go got dumped on. It was the mis-marketing that gave the impression of a new Yoshi's Island game that did it. I would even guess it hurt Yoshi's Island DS years later, though I'm only speculating...
