Interior Covering With Oratex

  • In this video we show covering the interior of our Bearhawk Model Five with Oratex. We liked the idea of using something light, easy to install, easy to repair, and tough, to withstand years of abuse in the cargo area. We also thought it was a good opportunity to get more familiar with Oratex before deciding what to use on the exterior.
    FYI - The iron recommended by Better Aircraft Fabric is in Celsius and the heat gun they recommend is in Fahrenheit. This is why I flip back and forth when noting the temperatures I'm using, it's not to annoy you. That's what the music is for. Thanks for watching!
    0:00 - Overview
    1:45 - Laying out the left side
    2:40 - Marking where to glue and preparing the surfaces
    3:14 - Applying the Oratex hot melt glue
    4:28 - Tacking the Oratex fabric in place
    6:00 - Taping the seam and slit
    7:16 - Right side
    8:14 - Setting the Oratex hot melt glue
    9:08 - Shrinking the Oratex
    9:59 - Final pass with the iron

    Taking the extra time to do little things like displaying the temperate in the corner on every clip with a heat gun or iron is why I love this channel.

    The extra layer will probably help control the temperature inside the plane, and it looks good too.

    One of those small irons that they sell for model airplanes would be handy for getting into tight spaces instead of using the heat gun.

      @@ColbyOsborn Agreed, I will be watching closely. I will likely get your number from Mark so I can ask a few questions. I am already wondering how much fabric you used on the interior/cargo area? How much are you going to order for the exterior?

    • @ColbyOsborn
      @ColbyOsborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds good. Mark knows how to get ahold of me. Hopefully after I spend some time covering the control surfaces, I'll have a better handle on the product. I ordered 6 meters of the half width roll for the interior. I needed it all, but had A LOT of waste. I think it would've been much more efficient using the full width roll (180 cm wide, I think).
      For the exterior, I've ordered 33 meters of the 180 cm wide stuff. It sounds like several model 4 guys have covered theirs with 30 meters. So I'm hoping an extra 3 meters will cover the longer fuselage of the Model Five and account for a small mistake or two if needed. If I have to pay the crazy shipping a third time, I'm going to be very disappointed in myself. lol

    Hey, Colby, Amanda... Looking good! I was planning on using a detachable velcro or snap in interior. This may change my mind

    • @ColbyOsborn
      @ColbyOsborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Brian! It's sure light and quick to install. I could definitely see the appeal of having an interior that was detachable and easier to replace though.

    What is the fuselage made of?
    Can stainless steel be used as an aircraft fuselage
    What kind of metal can be used as a fuselage
    Thanks in advance for the reply🙏🙏

    • @ColbyOsborn
      @ColbyOsborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4130 chromoly steel. I’m not an aeronautical engineer, but I think stainless steel is too heavy. It’s used in a few spot like the firewall on this aircraft.

    Hey Colby.. how much does it cost to build the Bearhawk not including the cost of the kit itself?

    • @ColbyOsborn
      @ColbyOsborn  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Joe, I'm sure you know it depends greatly on how you decide to build it out. Ours specifically looks like the following. 50k engine, 20k prop, 9k fabric, 30k panel and electrical, 5k interior, and we have around 6k in hardware, but supposedly the new kits come with most of that now.

    Do you guys have any affiliation with bearhawk? Is there any coupon code or way of letting them know you sent us that could get you some kind of kickback or support?

    • @ColbyOsborn
      @ColbyOsborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Ryan. We do not have any affiliation with Bearhawk. The good news is that means I can say whatever I want and can sneak random unrelated clips in here and there. 🙃
      A Bearhawk was my dream plane but my experience/intelligence/skill level is below the average Bearhawk builder and I was worried if there was enough information, especially visual information, for me to build a Bearhawk. Once I committed to the Bearhawk, I figured if I showed our process as I learned, it might help someone in similar shoes in the future.
      Very generous of you to ask, thanks!

      Hey Kevin,
      We still have quite a ways to go so maybe this will change, but so far I haven't really found much that required a lot of skill. If someone aims to be quick, efficient, and to produce a show quality product, I could see where being a skilled person would be more important. But for myself, I've found being a slow learner and having average skills to be adequate so far. I'm sure scratch building would be a totally different story.
      Not that it's been particularly difficult or anything, but I'd say the hardest part so far has been related to acquiring and managing information. There are lots of information sources, the info isn't always geared towards a beginner, sometimes there's conflicting information, etc. But Mark at Bearhawk Aircraft has been exceptionally helpful anytime I've had questions and I know they're working at improving the information they offer. It also sounds like you're already well down the road of acquiring information and educating yourself on the topic, so I'm sure you'd have no issues.
      Thanks for watching and I hope you can enjoy building an aircraft before long as well. Oh, and I cherry pick from A TON of content when creating these short little videos. I try my best to mention or show any struggles/challenges/etc., but I'm sure I make myself look handier than the reality.
