    Mother of low brass

      It's actually mostly horn and Wagner tuba, which are high brass.

      Well, there is a contrabass tuba, which is pretty low.

    Sadly I never attended a performance of Bruckner 8 or 9 conducted by Wand. I did attend though a Bruckner 5 concert in Brussels when the maestro was already 80 and it was a memorable occasion. I did not know the symphony well then but I was very impressed and I decided to get acquainted with the music as soon as I could. I now know I was privileged then back in the '90s to hear Wand and the NDR Orchestra in this repertoire and it will always remain a glorious experirience to look back upon - even if by now I have attended some 800 concerts, worldwide.

      The 8th was my introduction to Bruckner. I was floored after my first listening. Maestro Wand conducted the NDR orchestra on an RCA recording. I have since acquired all the symphonies. In Ethan Mordden's book, A Guide to Orchestral Music for the Non-Musician, he asks the reader/fledgling Classical Music Aficionado, "Why should you listen to Bruckner's 8th Symphony? Because it's there!"

    How clear themes are seperated at finale! Beside great Wand the other great Bruckner conductor Celibidache was able to do (of course with 'their' great orchestras). Thank soo much for posting.

      Bitte nicht Celibidache im selben Atemzug mit dem unerreichten Wand zu zitieren...

    • @pega17pl
      @pega17pl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipdecker789 - Warum nicht? Beide hatten großen Respekt voreinander, auch weil beide als Basis der Aufführungen Bruckners die Partitur ansahen. Auch besuchten sie sich gegenseitig, fachsimpelten und überließen ihre Orchester dem Besucher. Eine Forderung, wie "bitte nicht Wand im selben Atemzug mit dem unerreichten Celibidache zu zitieren" wäre reine Dummheit und wird der Weltgeltung dieser beiden Bruckner-Dirigenten und ihrer Orchester nicht gerecht. Übrigens: sowohl die Münchner Philharmoniker als auch das NDR-Sinfonieorchester sanken nach dem Tod der beiden auf das Provinzniveau zurück, aus dem sie die beiden herausgeholt und zur Weltgeltung geführt hatten.

    Was there another composer who wrote more inspiring and powerful codas than Bruckner...maybe Beethoven or Wagner? I find Bruckner's codas to be some of the most original, mystical and epic pieces of classical music I've ever heard. Forerunners to much that we hear in the film theater for sure!

    That guy, he could even be a northerner (Hamburg), a lot of what he was saying is about humility, working, serving (Bruckner). I only listen to his late recordings of Bruckner, except for the seventh, where I often listen to "Karajans last" recording.

    In the Arthurian Legend the magician Merlin somehow gets younger with time. Günter Wand did so with music. He conducts perfectly despite looking worse than many that I have seen at homes for the terminally senile. This performance is the very antithesis of senility. Every line is perfect. It looks as if the music leads him, which is of course not how this magisterial conducting is done.

    A slow, stately, noble performance but also rather low in fire and brio. Compare with the brisker more vigorous performance of Jarvi and the Frankfurters. Wand brings more gravitas but at the cost of sounding flabby and low energy.

      Bamberger Symphoniker are well known by Mahler (they organize young conductors competition, too). Don't know they are at Bruckner. BPO isn't real Bruckner orchestra.
      I asked because at one of last tv interviews Wand told about Bruckner #9 he and NDR symphonic orchestra performed at a country side church at South Germany. It was free of charge. After last chords faded out there was absolute silence. His musican showed no sign wat may behind him. Wand suspected an empty church. After long time - later Wand was informed some 5 minutes - he turned around slowly. The church was full of people being at reverent mood! From 3 years old to not estimable. Again after long time first left the church silently. All in all there were some 15 minutes from last chords until the last left as well as silently the other before. Wand said, he and his orchestra never experienced an audience with such deep impression. I think this country side people had the real all-is-said manner to Bruckner's 9th.

      Jarvi's Bruckner over Wand ? U must be joking. I like Jarvi for his interpretation on Sibelius, Tubin...,etc. but Bruckner? not even close .
