My favourite performance of Bruckner 8 in the world is by NDR/Wand, and I used to collect many their CDs. I wish I had been alive during this time, and although I was born in Japan, but I am grateful to be able to listen to this legendary performance now with modern technology.

I was going to mention that as well, I have never seen baton technique any more elegant than that of Maestro Wand.
This is such an amazing symphony, even by Bruckner standards! Scherzo as the second movement. And then the wonderful brass opening 60 seconds or so of the fourth movement. I recall when this performance was first released on CD that I rushed to our local record store [remember when there were record and book stores?] and they promised to order me a copy. Which I have listened to dozens of times since. Even on this video recording you can appreciate the acoustics of the cathedral. Thank you, NDR Klassik for sharing this supreme performance of Bruckner's great symphony, realized by the NDR under the direction of the incomparable Gunter Wand. What a welcome Christmas present to the rest of us!

One wag once quipped that "Bruckner was God's thank-you note to humanity." Symphony No. 8 ("The Apocalyptic") may well be the apotheosis of his symphonic repertoire. It and his 5th symphony (which he referred to as, "My contrapuntal masterpiece") are perhaps his two most difficult children (not that the other symphonies are without their own particular challenges...).
In less capable hands, Bruckner's symphonies come across as interminable and cacophonous walls of sound; under Günter Wand and the NDR SO (together with their engineers), life does indeed take on new meaning. Every facet of the symphony is perfectly adjudged (and faithfully captured), from the macro to the micro, with depths of subtleties that demand repeated hearings.
Along with the great adagio, the finale holds a very special place for this listener, a perfect triad melding the heroic, the tragic, and the eternal.
Kudos all around, including the videographers (and an audience on their best behavior). As for audio engineering, there is little doubt (if any) that such giants from the Golden Age of recordings as C. Robert Fine, Lewis W. Layton, and Kenneth E. Wilkinson are smiling down from above with great approval.

It comes back at 46:55, slightly modulated but as beautiful as ever.
This audience does know how to listen to Bruckner's music. They did not burst into immediate applause at the end, but allowed time for silence at the end of such a colossal symphony.
The 8th has been my favorite Bruckner Symphony for years. There are details in this recording I've never heard before! Fantastic!

What a performance, what an ensamble of incredibly gifted and well put together musicians. I must point out the brass! No modern recording or performance leaves me in such awe by it's authority and sheer primal force. Yet it's beauty in quiter parts and filigree at times makes me tear up from one moment to the other. I mean just check Günter Wands reaction at 6:08 i feel like the french horn is almost crying and weeping. I got chills just writing about it

Das ist eine Aufzeichnung mit dem NDR-Sinfonieorchester in der Musikhalle. Das Video Material wurde letztes Jahr schnippselweise für die Sendung "75 Jahre NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester" schon verwendet. Ich weiss von der Existenz des Bandmaterials im Archiv länger. Es wäre eine Supersache, die 5. Symphonie bald hier sehen zu dürfen. Danke im Voraus.

I don't think the tempi are that slow. In the slow movement, which is absolutely glorious, he is thankfully very careful to observe the "nicht schleppend" marking.
Sehr schön diese Aufzeichnung. Ich war damals dabei und saß auf den "schlechten" Plätzen hinter dem Orchester unter dem Lettner. Beeindruckend. - Und ja, es war das NDR Sinfonieorchester ( ich habe mich immer noch nicht an den - werbemäßig wahrscheinlich besseren ? - Namen "NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester" gewöhnt.

Die alten Bruckner Aufnahmen mit Wand und dem NDR-Sinfonieorchester sind einfach das Nonplusultra. Auch interessant: Helmut und Loki Schmidt und Uwe Barschel (wenige Wochen vor Beginn der Barschel-Affäre) in der ersten Reihe.

An unbelievable performance, as if hearing it again for the first time. I grew up listening to the Karl Bohm recording as a child, which will be forever imprinted on my mind (including the bum note on the clarinet in the scherzo). I’ll love that recording forever but Wand has really blown my mind here!

Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser großartigen und perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und vor allem brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der letzte Satz klingt besonders schön und echt feierlich. Der erfahrene und unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut analysierten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Zweifellos eine der besten Kombinationen des Dirigenten und des Orchesters!

Wanderful concert good rendition
Truly magical.
Besonders beeindruckend finde ich, wie Wand die Schluss-Apotheose der Achten gestaltet. Stets bleibt bei ihm alles kontrolliert, klar strukturiert und konturiert (Themen!). Da läuft nichts dynamisch aus dem Ruder. Bei vielen anderen Dirigenten endet die Achte leider erst in einer galoppierenden Horde wild gewordener Pferde (Pauken!) und sodann in einer undifferenzierten Lärmorgie.
Hör mal die Münchner Philharmoniker an mit maestro Celibidache ;-)
@@benediktschlegel8233 Oh Gott, Zeitlupen-Musik ist nicht so mein Fall. - Im Übrigen hört man bei Celi nicht mehr als bei Wand. Im Gegenteil: Bei Wand klingt alles viel natürlicher, intensiver und selbstverständlicher als bei Celis überdehnt-manieriertem "Musizieren". Und es spricht mich jedenfalls auch viel mehr an.
@@conbrio825 Bei Celibidache grenzt vieles an Perfektion. Bei Wand hört man einige Passagen nicht so natürlich an. Vorallem der letzte Satz ist zu schnell und nicht synchron genug. Niemals Zeitlupenmusik. Dafür ist dein Gehör noch nicht genug geschult
@@benediktschlegel8233 Ich interessiere mich für klassische Musik jetzt seit über 30 Jahren und denke, dass ich da ein einigermaßen "geschultes" Gehör besitze. Im Übrigen habe ich Wand in Berlin in zahlreichen Konzerten live erlebt - und jedes Konzert war ein Ereignis. Celi übrigens auch ein Mal: 1992 mit den Berliner Philharmonikern und Bruckners Siebter: zum Einschlafen. Wenn Musik in ihre einzelnen Bestandteile zerlegt wird... Aber wer's mag. Musik ist eben wie alle Kunst letztlich Geschmackssache.
@@conbrio825 Celibidache war Gastdirigent bei der Berliner. Für mich normal weil die guten Musiker der Berliner zuvor niemals Bruckner verstanden haben. Sorry aber wenn Ich Celibidache anhöre schlafe Ich nie ein. Hier bei Wand und andere Dirigenten höre Ich mir ein oder andere Fehler an. Beispiele sind Schwankungen der Tempi, zu schnelles spielen und vorallem keine gesammte Story

Maestro Wand seems to be one of the few conductors who is able to get the dynamics of the finale correct and thus let it shine in it's brilliance with the various parts able to be heard, rather than let it devolve into either a grand sonic muck, or an uneven blare where many of the lines are just swallowed up in the din.
I fully agree- I was impressed how clear all the orchestral parts were. Excellent performance of one of Bruckners best symphonies and one of the top ten symphonic endings of all time.

Turns out this performance was released on CD several years ago [I thought I had it in my collection]. Delighted to see that they had a video recording which has just been posted. Still haven't decided which is my favorite scherzo. They all seem to fit the particular symphony they accompany.

1990年のほぼ同時期にチェリビダッケとヴァントが来日する、しかも両者ともにブルックナーの８番。どちらか１つといえば、録音のないまぼろしの指揮者チェリと決めかけていた矢先、RCAから出たCDで本演奏のブル８を聴きました。当時はまだ高名とは言えなかったヴァントでしたが、本盤はわたしにとって唯一無二のブルックナー第８交響曲となりました。もちろん！文化の日のサントリーホール、ヴァントを聴きました。後年、AltusがこのサントリーホールライヴをCD化してくれました。そしてこのたび、RCA盤の映像がお目見え！無上の幸福をありがとう！

Hallo Herr Barschel. Nur noch wenige Wimpernschläge bis zum angeblichen Freitod. Ausgerechnet Bruckners 8. Irgendwie die richtige Musik, sollte er sich tatsächlich selbst gerichtet haben. Und dann noch unter einem wirklich großen Dirigenten und einem erstklassigen Orchester.
Also in jeder Hinsicht ein Zeitdokument.

「1979年には、東ドイツから亡命したばかりのクラウス・テンシュテットが第3代首席指揮者に就く。しかし、テンシュテットは楽団との関係がうまくいかず、1981年の演奏旅行中に辞任してしまう。後継にはケルン市の音楽総監督をつとめたギュンター・ヴァントを第4代首席指揮者（1982年 - 1991年）として迎える。ヴァントはオーソドックスな演奏で評判を呼び、楽団員からの信頼も厚く、首席指揮者退任後の1991年以降でも名誉指揮者として、2002年2月14日に没するまでこの楽団に客演した。」とのこと。
なるほどこのオケの楽団員たちは伝統的にオーソドックスを好んだのでしょう。テンシュテットのマーラーとかブルックナーは新しい解釈を世に問うものだったと思います。特に「復活」のNDRとの共演は凄まじい演奏で、まったくオーソドックスとは言えないものでしたが、私はとても感動しました。恐るべき天才と思いましたが、楽団員はたぶんそういう指揮者がたまに客演ならばともかく、「それほどの強い個性にこれからもずっと付き合う」ことに抵抗感が強かったのでしょう。テンシュテットは新しいもの好きな傾向のある米英人にはすごく好まれたけのですけれどね。
例えば小澤征爾さんも音楽は斬新なので米国を本拠地にしたのは受け入れられるという意味ではよかった。フランスもまた割と新しい物好きなのと自国のプサン村優勝者ですから親近感を持ったのでしょう。そこで評価されているうちに腕を上げて西ドイツやオーストリアなどでも受け入れられる音楽家になっていった。ですが1960年代のNHK交響楽団ではドイツ人指揮者のもたらした伝統が根付いているので、若い小澤さんの音楽スタイルではマッチングは無理だったのでしょう。このようにオケやお国柄との相性というのは、どんなに指揮者に才能があろうと極めて大きな問題なのでしょう。ヴァントはキャリアを通じてますますドイツ音楽の代表的指揮者の一人となったわけですね。
話を元に戻しますが、この動画ではタイトルで楽団名を2017年からの新名称で表示していますが、私は当初戸惑いました。あれれ、ヴァントはNDRの他にもう一つ同じ地域のオケと共演していたんだろうかと、しばらくは???でした。落ち着いてドイツ語の解説を読み始めたらすぐにわかりましたが、確かにこれ、演奏当時はNDR「Norddeutshen Rundfunks-Sinfonieorchester 北ドイツ放送交響楽団」でしたね。
演奏はなるほどケルン放送響との録音と解釈が似ているようですが、部分的にはちょっとテンポが違う(遅い)かと。最終楽章の最後は特に遅い。今どきの愛好家は年齢が20～50歳くらいだと、もっとそこは速いテンポの演奏が大半の人には好まれるのではないでしょうか。もっとも楽団員はこういうゆるい指揮だとリラックスして演奏に集中し、楽しめそう。
小澤征爾さんの指揮だといつでもずっと緊張を強いられるからこの楽団とも合わないだろうなぁとか余計なことも考えてしまいます。いつだったか観たスカラフィルとの「悲愴交響曲」の演奏は、54歳の頃の小澤さんの音楽に、どこまでも徹底的に、すごい指揮テクニックでオケの人たちは合わせさせられていて、それゆえか奏者たちは楽しそうではなくて、どこか「悲愴」感も漂っていて、自分が奏者なら絶対あの指揮では演奏したくないなと思ったものです。日本の素人は知らないから小澤さんを常に絶賛ばかりしてきたけれど(日本人として西洋音楽の演奏において道を切り開いたから尊敬を集めているというのもありますが)、そういうのを取っ払って彼もまた一人の音楽家として見た場合に、彼の指揮のそういうところが吉と出る曲とそうでない曲とがあると早くから認識していました。しかしながらボストンSOとの演奏は小澤さんにしては大抵ややゆるいのです。奏者たちを尊重といいますか。ベルリンPOやウィーンPOとの演奏も然り。だから関係が良くて長続きしたのでしょう。というか、それらの楽団の団員たちからは何が何でも好かれる必要も小澤さんには絶対にあったと思います。
その意味ではチェリビダッケを聴くなら、1970年代の録音がいいです。チェリビダッケもかつてはオレの音楽に合わせろが行き過ぎる指揮者であっただろうと思いますが、年を取ると共に角が取れてきていて、オケもミュンヘンフィル(MP)ほどではないですが上手いし、録音もそこそこ鮮明ですし。テンポは遅いけれど遅すぎるわけではないし。1990年代MPとのはオケとの関係性は最も良いのですが、テンポはどの曲でも超遅いから好き嫌いがとても分かれそうですので。
ですが、ヴァントのは年を取ってもあまり遅くはなっていないから聞き入ってしまいます。最後が遅いのは、会場の残響時間がとても長いので、速いテンポでカンガンいくと、大音量で響きが混ざってワンワンして何を演奏しているのか分からなくなるからなのかもしれません。年取ったせいではなさそう。
それと、この曲は必ず朝比奈隆さん指揮N響の演奏(1997年3月)と比較してしまいますね。
あと、4楽章始まって間もないところのワーグナーチューバの音色は好きです。
I felt a little weird at the end - like I would have been applauding at the actual ending, instead of 20 seconds later like everyone else. Would I have been clapping and yelling "Bravo!" all by my little lonesome, not realizing that it is expected to give some reverent silence once the orchestra stopped playing and thus have been totally embarrassed, or would the others have joined me once they all realized it was ok to clap now? Or would it have been ok? Is there some tradition that I don't know about with this symphony that one should give the whole thing a bit of time to "exhale" and reverberate for a bit before one starts clapping? When I heard no applause at the end, I really was wondering for awhile what had happened to the audience, or that maybe they didn't record the ovation.
We still experience today that there is a period of silence after particularly moving concerts. The applause in 1987 might not have been as frenetic as we are possibly used to today, but it was definitely long, very long, confirmed by a colleague who luckily was able to attend the concert :)
In classical music there is a tip, in the end never be the first to start clapping, nor the last to stopping it.

At 1:24: 55 the timpanist comes in too early but it is too late to correct his error and he thus plays the 2 notes again when the conductor gives him a more firm downbeat with his baton. Poor guy.
don't get me wrong richard. I don't see that the timpanist made that mistake you mentioned because he is exactly on the beat. Btw. I have the entire orchestral score with me. I followed his playing and must reject your comment for he did not make that mistake.

That why I must correct you because it is just what you feel. I have the entire orchestral score and I can pinpoint that what you said was wrong. Believe me I know exactly that the timpanist was not playing wrongly. The conductor puts up his hand to attempt the pianissmo at bar measure 683, that is the final pounding of the timpani with that syncopated quaver note with the quarter E-flat note. Then it follows at general pause in measure 684. That is why the conductor was holding up his hand to make the last timpani sound (of measure 683) to fade away. He did not meant to indicate that what the timpanist did was wrong. It was just your wrong perception by just watching the video. That is why I must correct you.

You can follow the links to take a look at the orchestral score. The pen tip is pointing to the last timpani blast in measure 683, that was where the conductor tried to signal a more perceivable pianissimo on that bar, you can see that here is NO more timpani blast in the next measure 684. Furthermore the pianissmio is written for the timpani blast already in bar measure 681, it is valid for the measures 681, 682 and 683. That is why the conductor used his hand to enforce the pianissimo. He suggested actually the timpanist was still playing a bit too loud playing in these measures. He had wanted a true pianissimo. This is so clear in the orchestral score. I hope you can really take a look into it. It invalidates your comment about the conductor trying to correct the tampanist's wrong note because the timpanist was coming in too early. That is simply wrong. I am sorry.

Es ist beschämend und niederträchtig, dass diese großen alten Aufnahmen (im Titel des Videos) unter dem Namen "Elbphilharmonie Orchester" vermarktet werden. Günter Wand, der Chefdirigent des Orchesters war, als dieses "NDR-Sinfonieorchester" hieß, hat das Elbphilharmonie Orchester niemals dirigiert. An der korrekten historischen Bezeichnung sollte man erkennen können, wann eine Aufnahme entstanden ist und damit auch eine Einordnung in einen historischen Kontext möglich sein - wie es z.B. auch immer mit den Aufnahmen des NWDR Sinfonieorchesters unter Leitung von Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt üblich war.
Man stelle sich vor, man würde die großen Aufnahmen eines Yevgeni Mravinski mit den Leningrader Philharmonikern dem "St. Petersburg Philharmonic" unterschieben und damit 70 Jahre Stalinismus unsichtbar machen!
Der heutige, vermeintlich "woke" Trend, heutige Begrifflichkeiten bedenkenlos auf historische Körperschaften, Orte etc. anzuwenden, ist ahistorisch, sollte sich für uns als Kulturträger schon von daher verbieten und macht uns als Gesellschaft geschichtslos. Diese Geschichtsklitterung ist gegenüber der Legitimität der Leistung der damaligen Musikerinnen und Musiker im damaligen historischen Bezugsrahmen respektlos.

Das ruft bei mir eine Schilderung von Wolfgang Seifert in seiner Wand-Biografie (gebundene Ausgabe, S. 438ff.) in Erinnerung. Wand sollte 1993 wieder an das Pult "seines" Gürzenich-Orchesters zurückkehren. Termine und Programm waren schon fest vereinbart. Kurze Zeit zuvor jedoch hatte sich das Gürzenich-Orchester in "Kölner Philharmoniker" umbenannt. Auf einer Wand vorher zugeschickten CD mit einer neuen Aufnahme der Weber-Oper "Oberon" prangte sogar ein Doppelname "Kölner Philharmoniker/Gürzenich-Orchester" - so, als ob gleich zwei Orchester an der Einspielung beteiligt gewesen wären.
Wand sagte kurzerhand die geplanten Konzerte ab, weil er es unerträglich fand, wie "hier eine neue Generation 'cooler' Sachwalter und Kommerzialisierer öffentlich finanzierter Kultureinrichtungen die Zeichen der Zeit verstanden zu haben glaubte und sich über gewachsenene Tradiitionen einfach hinwegsetzte. Von der Kölner Kulturgeschichte wusste man nichts oder wollte man nichts wissen; es zählte offensichtlich nur noch der Markt."
Ob Wand "sein" NDR Sinfonieorchester nach dessen Umbenennung noch dirigiert hätte? Zweifel sind nach der obigen Episode sicherlich angebracht. ;-)
@@conbrio825 Das hängt davon ab, ob er noch den neoliberalen Kontext des "Musen"-Tempels Elbphilharmonie so kritisch zu sehen vermocht hätte wie wir. Wahrscheinlich ja.
Was die reine Namensnennung betrifft, ist die Situation hier ja geradezu noch schlimmer - der bisherige Name entfällt ganz, während die von ihm auch schon beanstandete Doppelbenennung "Gürzenich-Orchester/Kölner Philharmoniker" ja dann, zumindest im praktischen Gebrauch, Standard wurde, oder? Ich persönlich nenne es heute noch Gürzenich-Orchester. (Bin Jg. '72; ein Freund meines Vaters war 1. Geiger dort.) Außerdem ist für mich als Bremer, dessen "Philharmonisches Orchester" aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammt, das Wort allein ja nun noch nicht so neumodischer Schnick-Schnack...

@@conbrio825 Ich möchte Ihnen zwei Beobachtungen aus den letzten Wochen mitteilen, warum ich neuerdings so hellhörig werde, wenn es um Zeichen geht, dass wir als Gesellschaft geschichtslos werden. Nein, drei.
1. Wikipedia wollte mir neulich weismachen, ein unbekannter Komponist, ein Spätromantiker, ausgebildet in der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, habe an der "Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Frankfurt" studiert. Das kam mir nun doch unwahrscheinlich vor, und in der Tat: das Institut hieß seinerzeit "Musikschule Frankfurt", später "Konservatorium" und trägt seinen heutigen Namen erst seit den 60er Jahren des 20. Jhd.
2. An Zynismus nicht zu überbieten ist die Information, die die von Google automatisch generierten Lebensdaten oben über den Treffern, über einen anderen Komponisten zur Verfügung stellten. (Man muss einräumen, dass diese Kurzinfos wohl von Algorithmen selbstständig erstellt werden und keinem Menschen ein Vorwurf zu machen ist. Das macht die Sache aber kaum besser.) Er sei nämlich verstorben "xx. yy. 1944 in: Museum und KZ--Gedenkstätte Auschwitz-Birkenau"! Das muss ja wild zugegangen sein, in diesen Museen und Gedenkstätten im 3. Reich... Es wird einem schlecht.
Das dritte wäre die Umbenennung von 143 Kunstwerken in den Dresdner Kunstsammlungen jüngst. Und damit wären wir dann bei pc- und 'woker' Sprachbereinigung und ihrer imperialen Ausdehnung ihrer Werte und Bezeichnungen auf andere Kulturen und Epochen... Ein Schelm, wer in der Tendenz zu Geschichtslosigkeit die Gefahr des Faschismus sähe... Wir kommen nirgends her und gehen nirgends hin, sind nur hier und jetzt, erschaffen und beschützt von unserem postideologischen Parteien-Mainstream in Ewigkeit, amen.
@@borisbrinkmann Offenbar scheint man am Rhein aber irgendwann wieder zur Besinnung gekommen zu sein. Ich habe mir bei jpc mal die jüngsten Aufnahmen aus Köln angesehen. Da firmiert das Orchester wieder allein unter seinem Traditionsnamen "Gürzenich-Orchester Köln". Von Kölner Philharmonikern ist da nichts mehr zu lesen... ;-)
Hm. Es tut uns leid, dass Sie die Umbenennung dermaßen zu stören scheint. In unseren Augen kann man das Thema durchaus differenziert betrachten und diskutieren - und vermutlich auch am Ende einer solchen Diskussion noch durchaus unterschiedlicher Meinung sein. (Ob das in einem konstruktiven Diskurs sogleich als "beschämend" und "niederträchtig" betitelt werden muss, steht noch einmal auf einem anderen Blatt, finden wir.)
In der Geschichte des Orchesters gab es mehr als eine Namensänderung (NWDR Sinfonieorchester, Orchester des Norddeutschen Rundfunks, NDR Sinfonieorchester, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester). Wir verstehen den aktuellen Namen im TH-cam-Titel als Absender, wichtig, um mit den gegenwärtigen Anforderungen an ein Orchester mitzuhalten, aber ebenso wichtig, um der eigenen Geschichte treu zu bleiben und diese erkennbar werden zu lassen. Nicht jeder Nutzer weiß mutmaßlich, dass es sich bei all diesen Namen um dasselbe Orchester und dieselbe Orchesterhistorie handelt.
Was wir aus Ihrer Diskussion aber in jedem Fall mitnehmen, ist der Wunsch nach einer eindeutigeren historischen Einordnung schon im Titel. Dem tragen wir gerne Rechnung und haben jetzt bei allen Wand-Aufnahmen sowie weiteren historischen Mitschnitten das Aufführungsjahr mit in den Titel übernommen. In der ausführlichen Beschreibung darunter findet sich dann selbstverständlich auch der damals gebräuchliche Name des Orchesters sowie der Hinweis auf die Umbenennung.
Wir wünschen viel Freude damit! Und auch ein gutes neues Jahr :)
