@@marcucciolo57 Eine gute Antwort. Ich spreche es mal aus. Die Symphonie ist eine der ruhigsten, vielleicht wollte Bruckner mit "Mysteriun" sie etwas aufpeppen. Er war ein Schlitzohr durch und durch. Aber auch hier kannst du dich zurücklehnen und zuhören wie er Kathedralen, kleine Kirchkes und mal'n Kapellchen baut. Immer, immer dem lieben Gott zugewandt.
Wand basically owns this work. There is no pause, just one phrase flowing into the next. The grandmaster of Bruckner.

@@HR-yd5ib No you cannot tell exactly who the conductor is. But a Wand performance is always characterized by a rather fast tempo, good inner voices, and a continuity of phrasing vs. the rather start-stop approach taken by others like Jochum.

Besides this truly magnificent performance , I think the excellent camera work by Kurt-Oskar Herting should be mentioned and give credit for.

Ich habe schon an anderer Stelle (zur Aufführung der 5. Sinfonie) gesagt, das die Interpretationen der 5. und 8. Sinfonie durch G. Wand herausragend und ein Maßstab der Bruckner Aufführungen dieser Werke im besonderen wie auch der anderen Bruckner Werke sind - woran das Sinfonie Orchester des NDR mageblichen Anteil hatte. Vielen, vielen herzlichen Dank dafür und die lebenslange Erinnerung an diese großartigen, bewegenden Stunden für alle, die es miterleben oder später anhören konnten👋🌹👍🌝👋

What can you say about Wand. The guy does the best Bruckner, Brahms, Schubert and Beethoven. The core German repertoire he owns. The 8th wonder of the world.

Gunter Wand speaks Bruckner like no other . This is an absolute privilege.
Heard Wand conduct this symphony at the BBC Proms (where he was worshipped) in 1992 - to this day, the finest performance of a Bruckner symphony I have ever heard.
I was there as well and agree with every word. The only other performances that come near were also conducted by Wand, including No. 9 at the Proms in 2001 - his final appearance in the UK
I found Bruckner's 8th somewhat elusive until I heard Wand conduct it at the Proms, though only on radio - that must have been the 1992 performance. Somehow everything fell into place and made sense. All that careful thought and rehearsal.
I remember hearing that performance live on Radio 3 and it was miraculous. I got to hear Wand conduct the same symphony at the Proms several years later, a superb performance but not as magical as 1992. It was a very hot hall, which makes a long work fatiguing for the players and conductor.

What a magnificent performance. I have to agree that Gunter Wand is the best Bruckner conductor. He makes the music come alive. I don't really know which of Bruckner is my favorite. Just know that I'm a big fan of his symphonies. Thanks for posting this.

Bärenstark... Mit 88 dirigiert Günter Wand Bruckners 8. auswendig. Ein Alter, in dem die meisten Männer die Radieschen bereits von unten betrachten... Auch damals noch und vermutlich für alle Zeiten der größte Bruckner - Dirigent.
Die Musik: Beste, feinste, subtile deutsche (Musik-) Kultur für Gefühl und Verstand, wie es sie heute wohl kaum mehr gibt.

Es ist im Detail so unglaublich gut ausgearbeitet! Die großen Flächen sind da, aber man kann beliebig genau hinhören, und es überzeugt immer noch. Hat etwas Kammermusikalisches.
Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser großartigen Sinfonie mit seidigen Töne aller Streicher, milden Töne aller Holzbläser und, vor allem, brillanten Töne aller Metallbläser. Der erfahrene Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Einfach wunderbar!

For some reason I would have liked to have attended the rehearsal more than the concert. Wand's understanding of the work is something I would like to share, it's outstanding. That concert must have been such a moment!

Apart from being an excellent conductor, Wand is immaculately dressed. He has two rows of braid on the outer side seams of his trousers, which is correct for full evening dress. He shows the same attention to detail with Bruckner's score!

相當好的演出!! 很多的細節居然是我以前沒注意到的，在很慢的速度依然可以維持很好的平衡，法國號首席的音色
相當的渾厚並富有情感，很喜歡。最後的結局也令人敬佩，心目中的指揮大師！

I think it's like ducklings - the first creature they see, they think is mummy and I saw Celi first and followed him blindly. Maybe you do the same with Günter? One thing is for sure, an orchestra with a 'wand' is bound to be magical!

Bruckner hat von seiner Achten zwei Fassungen erstellt. Die erste Fassung vollendete er 1887. Diese Fassung wurde aber nicht zur Aufführung angenommen, was Bruckner nicht nur in eine Lebenskrise stürzen ließ, sondern auch in den Folgejahren veranlasste, die Symphonie noch einmal komplett umzuarbeiten.
Diese zweite Fassung vollendete er 1890/91. Da sie aber musikalisch noch komplexer geriet, folgte er mal wieder dem Rat "wohlmeinender" Freunde (u.a. auch von Schalk) und nahm - insbesondere im Adagio und Finale - "verständniserleichternde" Striche und Eingriffe vor, die offenbar seiner (Bruckners) eigenen kompositorischen Logik widersprachen. In dieser "entstellten" 2. Fassung wurde die Sinfonie dann 1892 uraufgeführt.
Robert Haas hat nun versucht, eine "Originalfassung" zu rekonstruieren, indem er prinzipiell die 2. Fassung von 1890 zugrunde legte und durch Vergleiche mit der 1. Fassung alle formzerstörenden Striche und Kürzungen rückgängig machte sowie alle Fremdeinflüsse tilgte. Die Haas-Fassung ist somit quasi eine "Mischfassung" der beiden von Bruckner erstellten Fassungen.

Ob die 1887-Fassung auch die beste ist, wage ich allerdings zu bezweifeln. Fakt ist, dass sie nur noch ganz selten im Konzertsaal erklingt und es meines Wissens auch nicht viele CD-Einspielungen von ihr gibt. Die meisten (Bruckner-)Dirigenten entscheiden sich heute zwischen der Haas-"Misch"-Fassung (z.B. Wand) oder der 2. Fassung (Nowak-Edition).
Ich habe die Erst-Fassung einmal im Konzert gehört mit dem Konzerthausorchester Berlin unter Eliahu Inbal. Auf youtube gibt's eine Aufnahme mit Inbal und dem RSO Frankfurt: th-cam.com/video/pyggJTQAXiQ/w-d-xo.html Da können Sie ja mal reinhören.
Einer der Haupt-Kritikpunkte an der Erstfassung ist, dass Bruckner den ersten Satz bereits mit einer strahlenden Apotheose enden lässt, während er dann in seiner 2. Fassung (und auch in der von Haas) nach den schicksalhaft-dröhnenden Blechsalven am Ende mit einem leisen Pauken-Streicher-Pendeln ("Totenuhr") verlöscht. Auf die ganze Sinfonie bezogen, ist das - dramaturgisch gesehen - für viele überzeugender.

@@xkay-six1845 I wish I could say completely agree. :) In this case, I just got lucky as he is still with them. A few clips in the performance show that it is definitely him as they seem to match up almost perfectly with his picture on their current website.

aber es haette noch schlimmer kommen koennen: "Elfis Orchester", das waere dann der gipfel. apropos: wer versucht eigentlich noch immer: "elfi" in den sprachgebrauch zu druecken? ich denke da immer an meine gute tante Elfi...
Aus heutiger Sicht sind wir das Residenzorchester und benennen uns auch so. Unser damaliger Name zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme ist zuerst im Text erwähnt. Herzliche Grüße an die Namensvetterin! ☺️
