    I’m just over halfway through this video and stopped to comment, this video is by far the best System 8 video I’ve ever seen! I love how you take the time to cover every aspect of The System 8. Sure I love the other plug outs like everyone else but it’s been awesome seeing you go through every section of this synth and explain it and show it in detail. Thanks so much for this! This has been super informative and really inspired me to play with it and with a greater understanding of what’s happening when I do. Cheers!

    At 22:05 you clearly and simply illustrate just how easy it is to take a simple Sawtooth wave, thicken it up by bringing in more sawtooth waves slightly detuned, then add it to a huge and deep reverb in a hall! And all so easy by touching a few knobs and sliders! Excellent job! SPOT ON!

    Fantastic tutorial. You have a super smooth voice and attitude. Love the mirror so we can see your face. I have had my Sys 8 for about a month now. Its a killer synth in many many ways. I have made sounds that shake my floor boards and windows and iv'e made some very classic sounds like those Kraftwerk used back in the day and also some from Equinox.
    It's an extremely versatile synth. I don't think there's a sound out there that this synth can't create.

    I enjoy listening how you are creating patches. I have had this keyboard for 3 months now and am learning more and more about synthesis. I enjoy trying to make more ambient dreamy spacey pads, but am still learning. This video makes me feel confident that I will reach my goals with my System 8 progression.

    Cuckoo, this is one the best SYSTEM-8 tutorials on YT now. The SYSTEM-8 is currently the understated flagship synth of Roland. I love it. It can sound 'Roland-ish' yes (what's wrong with that? It's a Roland! ha), but if you spend some time (as you have) programming it, it will reward you immensely. Same for the JD-XA, which is significantly more complex. The plugouts on the SYSTEM-8 are amazing. Juno 106, Jupiter 8, JX-3P plugouts are really spot on. Plenty of videos comparing. Great video Cuckoo. Fun to see you 'branching out'.

    • @st0rmchild
      @st0rmchild 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I got one a few months ago and love it. After many years exclusively using VSTs, sound design has become fun again. The direct controls and (pretty much) no menu diving makes it so easy and natural to shape the sound that I often end up making a totally new patch without even intending to.

    • @bilonggrisimmeri
      @bilonggrisimmeri 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought JD-XA over this System-8. You get more polyphony in its digital parts and 4 genuine analogue voices. So it's more like Roland's Zencore, XV, D-50 and JD products. On the negative side, JD-XA analogue LP filters 1 & 2 are hardly different and neither is LPF3, except it distorts very easily. So it's analogue is a bit bland. I love the digital section, where you can layer up to 3 PCM samples X4 voices, with Super Saw and PWM Square wave. There are many hidden features and flexible effects too.

      i know this is late but what’s better about the system 8 compared to the jupiter i’m new to synths and sound design

    • @Rwtheking
      @Rwtheking 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@spacecowboy2625 the system 8 has it’s own synth engine and a few others. The thing that makes this engine a bit more powerful in terms of emulation is that it focuses on recreating the individual circuits and electronic parts that give each analog synth it’s sound while the Jupiter x has an engine more akin to a sample filled gigging keyboard which means it is more like a recording of a recording of a synth. It’s a good keyboard but marketed for the wrong market since it isn’t as good from a traditional sound designers point off view. This is a better subtractive focused synth while the other is better if you want to cover more than synth sounds which isn’t something the analog/virtual analog market desires as much. They just fulfill the needs of a keyboardist differently and that led to disappointment from the Jupiter x because it had the wrong consumer in mind.

    I don’t own a System 8 and probably never will (just couldn’t give up my Rev 2 to make the “big synth” space), but I thought this was an outstandingly useful sound design tutorial nonetheless. The way you experiment and talk through what strikes you and what you like and don’t like is immensely interesting and useful. Most sound design tutorials just go from point a to point b as quickly as possible with no time for side trips and scenery. Your combination of depth and breadth and your exploratory style will help me learn to better program any synth. thanks!
    Edit: The more you show the features of the System 8 , the more I’m intrigued . . . what if I got a Rev 2 Desktop and then a System 8 as my main board? Hmmm . . .

    I really liked your presets. They sound, for a lack of a better word, “organic”. As if they were made acoustically and then modified electronically. I agree with your description of the presets as Roland-ish, which again is hard to describe to someone who isn’t into synthesis, but the Roland sound is slick and clean.. I own synths from 6 different manufacturers and definitely each has the manufacturer’s character.

    The problem with Roland - I feel like they could have kept adding plug-outs. Roland D50, Alpha Juno, Jupiter 6, etc... but then they ditched it for the Jupiter X which has stripped down versions, but looks better. From what I understand, the Jupiter X even managed to have a worse UI compared to the System 8.
    Oh well...
    Good sound designs. I like your custom overlay on it as well.

    I held out on trying this synth for so long due to its IMO frankly pretty ugly appearance. But as soon as i tried it, I immediately fell in love with it. I love the roland sound, and the sheer amount of tones this thing is capable of producing is almost overwhelming. Even when seeming rather limited on the surface, compared to the Prophet Rev 2, as an example. But i think it's kind of a cost/benefit thing, giving it a very effective and intuitive workflow, at the cost of having simpler routing capabilities.
    It's priceless for live situations, being able to combine two different synth-engines into one performance patch.
    My only wish was 16 note polyphony, so you can do more when running multitimbral in performance mode, and maybe an extra LFO.
    But nothings perfect :)

    I have a synth pop band called CHACKIE JAM and I mainly use the system 8 live in Juno 106 plug out mode! It sounds great, it's also very robust and doesn't go out of tune like the original does. I have compared it to a real juno and I don't hear the difference. It's a work horse, it's lightweight and it's a bit ugly but hey, the beauty is in the sound.

    Cuckoo man, Help me figure out this atria mini nova! It seems there isn't a lot of hands on walkthroughs. From what I gather from reading it's a bunch of overcomplicated menu diving but it's been my experience that if you start on the surface controls to get a base you don't spend much time in the menus. In spite of the limited success i've had developing patches I'd like to see where you would start. A little exposition on the mod matrix would be a huge help.

      The sequencer is saved separately. Means you can use it on any preset.

    just thinking about it but is the system 8 just a modern era JP8000?

      If Roland would release had a plug-out of the JP-8000 or 8080 it would be great. The sound patches that came with those are still popular to this day. Those sound patch sounds can likely be made by the System 8 I feel.

      How do you map the knobs on the System 8 to a vst like Diva?

    • @plutostube
      @plutostube ปีที่แล้ว

      for example in Ableon is very easy with midi learn, you do it once and save that project as default or preset and then recall it when you want without doing that process again@@ntrnlgrv

    this ends up as a DX7 review, completely lost in FM. :P

    • @st0rmchild
      @st0rmchild 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, too much FM stuff. One FM oscillator mixed with an analog type one can be interesting (especially with a subtle amount of FM), but most of these sounds can be done with a plain old DX7, which really misses the point of the System-8.
