woah I JUST brought home a mini upright piano called the Monochord, from the 30s. 64 notes and has one string per note. super neat, i had to work on it a bit but it was a great free find
been a fan of you since your op-1 review video. this sounds SO MUCH better than moog muse. I applaud you for not doing another moog muse review. the first time I heard moog muse, it instantly reminded of behringer deepmind sound. this sounds really really good, on my lab-top speakers. great great playing too! you have such great taste in melody/harmony!! this live version is official release worthy on your Spotify. I would listen to this while driving on a road trip or something.
Absolutely lovely - this piano sounds amazing, great texture, harmonies remind me of joanna newsom in the best way possible. I could listen to this for hours.
@@supervised thanks. I put this song up as a download on my Patreon store. Patrons have access to it. But anyone can purchase it if they’d like. For a proper release I think I’d refine the tuning on the piano first, and make a more proper stereo recording. Would love doing that at some point.
Interesting how we think the art would be “better / release worthy” if we tuned the piano, used a DAW, maybe some mastering plugins, AI… maybe just the AI doing all the playing… I wonder when or if we’ll ever get back to valuing the true, immediate, neurons to expression of humans with imperfect tangible objects over all else.
@@truecuckoo I've been following you for years, from back when you were the teachnig authority on the Elektron Octatack... Funny to see we have the same piano now... I ended up with the Una Corda Anniversary edition. Most beautiful instrument i ever saw ❤
Reminds me of Kenneth Kirschner's solo piano noodles he used to release on 12k, Autoplate and Thinner (anyone remember that?). Una Corda is my dream instrument and has been the direct reason for me learning to play keys. One day. More more more more, please, sir.
So this piano was built to sound this way? I thought at first you had stripped it bare, and prepared the hammers with pins for instance. So detailed and delicate. Great choices of chords and melodies.
Thank you so much! If you peek closely you’ll notice there’s a blue horizontal strip of fabric between the hammers and the strings. This piano has a mounting system where you can interchange different fabrics to achieve different sounds. Here I’m using a felt material that is the thickest that I have. So it muffles it into a more soft and dreamy landscape. Without any fabric it has a pretty distinct and clear tone.
This is truly beautiful, I could listen this over and over I really could. The timbre of your piano at times sound more like a classical guitar but of course they are technically speaking both string instruments when it comes down to it. Was this recorded in one take? Or was it the culmination of other sessions to arrive at it? Composition is something I’m fascinated by.
Thanks! Acoustic pianos are special. Perhaps something like the Osmose or Continuum Fingerboard could offer platforms where you can express yourself and freestyle like this.
For anyone interested in an Una chorda style ‘hack’ for normal pianos, you can insert a felt strip between the sets of strings to mute the outer ones of the trichords, and every other bichord. You can buy them online as tuning strip or temperament felt strip piano tuning tools or some such keywords. Works nicely 👌. If you’re not confident ask your piano tuner to strip mute the whole piano it’s quite easy
Nils was actually the one who initiated the idea for this Una Corda piano in the first place. The piano maker and Niels collaborated on the idea, and this is what came out of it. I know he uses it on some of his albums.
@@truecuckoo I believe he’s working on a revised model, possibly more stable tuning? Anyway, always lovely to hear your piano playing. Come to Scotland for a mini tour. D
Yeah especially with the felt mounted like here. The strings are shorter and thicker than typical piano strings too, which gives it a slightly different response and tone.
The Una Corda piano only has one pedal, and it's a sustain pedal. It does the same as on a grand - lifts the dampers. There's no "pianissimo" pedal, or anything like that.
The una corda pedal makes it so the hammers in a normal piano strike fewer strings than they normally do. So, if a note is usually made from a hammer hitting 3 strings, playing the same note with the una corda pedal down makes the hammer only strike 2 strings. (It was called una corda because early versions of pianos usually only had 2 strings per note, not the modern 3, so the pedal would cause the hammer to only hit one string or "una corda") In contrast, the Una Corda piano Cuckoo is using only has 1 string per note period. All notes are made by a hammer striking 1 string.

Much as I love synths, here's nothing that really compares to a piano. Beautifully played, sir.
Thank you so much, friend. Same… I'd say. It all began with the piano for me. And it will always be there.

Yeah for sure. But you gotta be careful with the sustain pedal, that sticks out a little bit.

How does "Una Corda" in this context differ from the Una Corda Pedal on a Grand?

To create. But also to make a change. Perhaps there'll be more time to chill? Not sure about that.
