Re painting German helmets

  • I had these repro M42 Helmets and wasn't happy with the colour and finish. After much research I discovered most German helmets left the factory with a standard 'Grau' or grey finish and it was up to the owner of the helmet to repaint if they wished. Many helmets were repainted when the owner came across a tank crew or vehicle crew repainting their tank/truck, quite literally 'Hey pal, how about a quick spray for my helmet'! Looking at hundreds of photos I discovered that very few where painted in camouflage colours but where usually just a matt finish grey (Dunkelgrau) or green (Feldgrau)
    So in an effort to improve the authenticity of my films I started on my helmets...What do you think? ....better?

    I've seen enough of the real helmets to be able to recognize an original finish, but you had me fooled with your opening shots.

    German helmets were never corked. For texturing you want to use very fine aluminum oxide, which is available from a number of helmet restoration websites. They used it as a blasting medium in the factories and then reused it during painting for ultra-fine texture.

    I just got done painting my m42 and it turned out very good thanks for having a nice video to watch I used a small amount of aluminum oxide to give a slight texture I didn’t want to over do it so only used a small salt pinch then I moved it around a little to spread it out then finished it with another small layer of paint.

      Ah, Aluminum Oxide nice. Sadly I couldn't get hold of any but as you know, I'm sure, that was what was used originally for texture...I think it was added to the paint when spraying.

      @rexterrocks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aluminium oxide was added to the paint to make the surface less reflective. I got hold of some AO very cheap off ebay and mixed it with acrylic paint which I painted on by hand as a base coat and then spray painted over it. I think it looks very effective. I went with a relic look.

    I have an original, post ww2, lots of dents on the back side. Whoever was wearing it, I bet they weren't having a good day! So anyways, I decided to paint the old thing. Some kids had painted it with some cheap black paint, and put a brush painted ss symbol on it, not genuine of course. So, me being me, I start removing the stuff. I saw a little bit of green left, but not nearly enough to make it look presentable. So I remove all the paint, put on some primer, and sprayed some green paint on it. It looks much better! Thanks for the video, dancing dog!

    I’m restoring an m40, I took the previous paint completely off as it was already pretty badly restored, now I have to repaint it, I bought day 1944 paint, I tried on the shell to see if it would hold on, but it doesn’t, I can scratch it off with my nails. Do you know if I have to use any sort of primer or what I should do to make it work?

    Im using aluminum oxide for texture as sand is a little large. It doesn't really matter because they were frequently overpainted in the field. When using aluminum oxide and enamel paint, I'll bake it in the oven on a very low setting for an hour or so, 150° . It actually melds the aluminum oxide and enamel paint into a super strong paint . I did it with restoring coleman lanterns and just transferred the process to helmets( no A.O) on lanterns though . Corked M1s I lower the temp and time so as not to burn it.( not sure if that has or ever could happen ,it's just something that I THINK might happen if temp was too high or in too long. Good video, tips are always good for those of us unwilling or incapable of shelling out the ridiculous amounts of loot that Nazi junk costs. I have (1) M35. I collect allied only, M1s and M1917s. (Except that 1 M35 which I'm not thrilled about but im going all in with field camouflage, some European chicken wire ( its different than ours in the U.S.) or maybe a "so called" Normandy camo, job. Sorry about jacking up your thread. Decent job. Good color. Thanks for the video

    • @zangtumtung
      @zangtumtung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, now you are doing things properly! I should have mentioned I'm a film maker and just want the helmets to look a bit 'better' from a distance. When you have brand new shiny helmets your actors do look as if they've just arrived from Central Casting! Like the sound of your thoroughness tho' 😎

      M35 were released with double decals for all,heer,ss,police,luft,krieg...but generally they were repeint in felgrau/gray or just removed one decal in summer 1940,so original M35 dd are rare.
      They are very used in movies and tv show..Hogan’s heroes..7ieme compagnie (a funny French movie),so more symbolic.
      Early M40 ss could have double decal,also heer (rare,the order was made few months after the release) and police.
      M42,yes,almost no decal,except for ss and police,but generally they don’t,too shiny,the ss shield is very reflective with light and they also used a helmer cover to hyde it.

    I know this is an old video. Its not a bad starting point. I would suggest updating the video description to reflect some of the lessons learned from the comments below. I know you couldn’t get a hold of aluminum oxide. You should explain that in the video description. People will use your methods as a starting point so you should tell them what you learned so will be informed as well. Also, your helmets look much better than what you initially had them as.
    The color tones are subjective to the company producing the paint. Dunkel grau (RAL code 7015)Schiefer grau vs feldgrau (RAL code 6006) are similar in color just vary in color tone. Feldgrau is not apple green. Apple green was a pre war color. Helmets were later made to be darker so the next color shade used on m40s was nicknamed pea green. Feld grau is not pea green as mentioned by some one else. Pea green as a color is a tone between Feldgrau and apple green.
    Again the color tones are good. Both are very appropriate for m42 helmets. Just update the video description to reflect correct info. learned from the comments and this is a decent starting point for beginners.
    Also the lack of aluminum oxide is tough. Its hard to sprinkle it on and not look clumpy like cork sprinkled on an m1 steel pot. Someone suggested mixing it in with acrylic paint and brushing it on. If dome right. That finish will look great. Lay down a good base coat of a flat spray paint, so brush applied paint and aluminum oxide mix has something to really bite into. Sanding the paint on the metal isn’t enough for that kind of paint and application. It really needs nice flat paint to act like primer. Stipple the paint on. Id you stipple, it will look sprayed on. Bake the finish at 180*f for a few hours. This will speed up the curing process and harden the finish too. Then spray paint over it with the Desiree color Or. You can use a textured finish from a can like rustoleum or krylon. Hammered metal finish looks good texture wise. Spray over with the correct color. Easy way to simulate aluminum oxide.
    Yes this isn’t how helmets were done historically. However, you’re trying to replicate the end results to simulate aluminum oxide texture. For those only saying sprinkle on aluminum oxide, the Germans mixed it into the paint and sprayed it on. So for all of the accuracy purists out there( most likely having a fit) these are repro helmets, the intent is to simulate the texture and take away the shine. Theses are some good ways to do that. Ways that anyone who does not have the money pr means to do it correctly. Regardless, the end results look nice! Much better than when you started out!

      @zangtumtung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks for your comment. As you quite correctly pointed out I am in no way an expert and simply wished to repaint them so they weren't so shiny. They were/are for use in filming and I am not a re-enactor so exact detail is not really needed and they certainly wouldn't pass muster for a re-enactment group. However I am pleased with the way they turned out and yes, they do look better 😃

    To apply a grainy finish try spraying the helmet with a tack spray by 3-M and then a light dusting of sawdust etc. The paint should seal things up and if not use any sort of dull coat etc. To age the liner - and it will look like perspiration stains - apply damp coffee grounds.

    • @zangtumtung
      @zangtumtung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip. I've got a bottle of finely ground cork I used on my US M1s but to be honest after a few weeks of handling they that lose that shine. Also these are film props so aren't subjected to the same scrutiny as re-enactors 😜

      I think if you're just doing it for display/show and tell sort of thing I think that's fine and not trying to pass it off as the real thing (because you'll caught out pretty quick, if only for the fact a real Stahlhelm weighs a ton and the fireman's helmet weighs couple of ounces!😝) Go for it!
