No air vents in a car of this price is insane... I was called crazy by my local dealer when I said I didn't want to wait for a 2024 as he promised it would be upgrades all round. Bloody glad I didn't wait. (uk and get my Ioniq 5 ultimate next week)
the downgrades for 2023 an now also for 2024 make my 2022 awd feel like a real luxury car, even though I don't have full limited as compared to the US, it's fairly close. Plus the colour I have - mystic olive green - has been discontinued, so I feel I now have a collector's car haha!
These little things that they cut out are what makes it better than a Tesla Y. Removing them will make it as bare as Tesla and we won't be able to justify 5-7k extra because Tesla owners can get the federal rebate.
They went for a more typical Hyundai USA approach of keeping premium features for the Limited trim. My 2023 SEL feels luxurious now by comparison :) The lack of folding mirrors and rear climate are big omissions to me. Cloth seats and hard plastic: not a big deal. Glad I have a 2023 though.
Most of the cost cutting makes sense if they want better margins but the backseat cuts are bad. Vents aren’t cheap but extremely important, seat-back storage is cheap and useful so that’s weird to cut, the cup holders are fairly nice to have too so that’s sad.
I have a ‘23 SE, with what looks like the same seat material. I wasn’t thrilled to not have leather like seats. BUT… after almost a year of ownership, I have to say, they still look like new, and have proven to be most comfortable.
If I was buying right now, I’d rush to get a 2023 SEL, or frustratingly have to buy a 2024 Limited. No rear air vents and hard plastic is a huge let down.
My ten year old Ford C-Max SEL has: full leather interior, front heated seats, 10-way power driver seat, soft touch panels on all doors, rear vents, middle seat armrest, two seat pockets, ambient lighting, panoramic moonroof. Its sticker price was originally ~$27k. This $50k Ioniq appears to have fewer creature comforts than a base Kia Soul.
The cost cutting kinda makes sense. However, the no USB-C thing is definitely an oversight; especially since that became a mainstream standard over a year ago. My '23 Kia EV6 GT line came with lots of cool options; I wonder if the 2024's will also get nerfed.
The SEL here can be had here with large discounts and the Limited usually has little to no discount. So around here it seems like people are already steering towards the Limited and I imagine Hyundai will have to discount the SEL even more now that they have taken pains to make it less attractive. I’m hoping they will get rid of the blue coolant and add a rear wiper in the 2025. It seems very odd to have a wiper on the N and then act like it’s not necessary on the other trims. I haven’t like the digital rearview mirrors that I’ve tried I find them hard on my middle aged eyes.
Interesting changes...but we are super happy with our 2022 Ultimate (Canadian Limited) trim. An incredible car that we put over a 1000km a week on. We have 3 I5's in the family 1 SEL and 2 Ultimates and so far we all love the vehicles. Thanks for the review! Mike 🇨🇦
Hyundai really messed up by cost cutting this to such an obvious degree at the same time as their tax credits are being phased out and the competition, namely Tesla, is cutting prices without removing features.
Now this makes me question what DOES the SEL trim have that the base model doesn’t. Seems like the cut it back significantly it’s closer to base than limited.
The 2023 SE has rear cup holder. Strange that they removed that. And both seats have rear cargo net in 2023 SE. Another difference I noticed: 2023 SE has soft touch leather on all door areas with window button (but doesn't have paper material that's hard plastic). Otherwise, seems the same. Looks like they removed a bunch of things in 2024 SE and SEL compared to 2023. Likely to increase margins after that they thought was establishing reputation of the car. But they moved too soon and too fast. Both 2022 and 2023 don't have a great rep mechanically,.given ICCU and other charging issues. So they're throwing away any possibility of cornering some part of the ev market by continuing the I5 wave. Essentially, their marketing department sucks and is ruining their engineering and design department by privileging marketing and short term profit margins over long term reputation gains and long term profits.
Oh, my. Poor decisions from Hyundai, IMHO. Consumers would gladly pay $200 more to have the features changed in the 2024 SEL. Tsk. Well… I prefer a Limited model anyway, so perhaps a moot point for me. I'm now thinking, however, that I might just hold off for the 2025 model with the NACS connector.
As someone who is looking at getting one, trying to find a used 2022 sel is looking more appealing. I didn’t like the lighting changes on the 23’s i really don’t want a 24 now
Thanks so much for this! I'm pretty sure I want an Ioniq 5 but feel a little overwhelmed by all the different options and possibilities. Sounds like I can't get the $7500 rebate anymore beacuse the batteries aren't made in the US? Are a lot of '22s going to be coming out of lease soon, would it be better to buy a used one and get all the features that were stripped out of the '24? What trim level and features are must haves for you?

Wow. I am shocked they are removing features not making them better. I was thinking of getting a new Ionic 5 2024, We'll have to see what they did to the Limited... I was hoping they would have improved the battery chemistry in the new model. Sounds like its the same size/range as you did not mention it.
Yeah, this is really going to make the new to the EV world crowd happy. Foisting them right onto the laughably bad DC charging network will have the new owners fuming when they can't even trickle charge their cars in their garages.
I am so glad I bought a 2023. I bought SE RWD specifically for towing capacity, mileage, and the cloth seats, because even with covers my dogs are brutal on upholstery. These are great, and very dog resistant. I would have liked the auto cargo door closing and folded mirrors, but honestly those are 1st World Plus issues. But the de usion to not include the charger cord? Cheap.

IMO, I much prefer cloth seats to leather of fake leather if the seats are not ventilated. Those seats suck in the heat without ventilation. So thats actually an improvement for the SEL.
I don’t know what they are thinking. Only $200 reduction and you lose all these features compared to my 2023. There’s no way I would even consider buying an SEL going forward. They better have some hot deals on the Limited in a year or two, or they have lost me as a customer.
I imagine the bigger cost offset is the addition of more airbags in the rear. Without those maybe the downgrade delta would've been $400-500? So if they hadn't downgraded the interior I don't think the MSRP would have stayed the same, given all else equal. If the Ltd has bigger margins maybe they won't need to either raise price nor reduce content to pay for the extra bags?
Don't now why many people complain about usb A. I think it's better that have usba in one end then usbc. When usbc gets wearn out in couple of months it disconnect the plug very easy when it's cable movement. Usba does not disconnectes and holds up much better.
This is all really annoying. I really want an I5 SEL, but have been holding out, hoping for a better price. I have a truck that gets about 18mpg and have looked at trading it in. I could get a 23 SEL AWD for about $12k out of pocket and it would be paid off, but am really debating because it lacks a moonroof. But, if I keep waiting than it will just keep losing amenities.
@@TheIoniqGuy Wasn’t range a lot less on the 2022? I haven’t thought of that actually because I thought I read that those two years were quite different, but maybe I’m wrong?
Range rating is officially 10 miles lower for 22 but that’s likely because they were being conservative with their estimates and then had more real world data for 23 when they bumped it up 10 more miles
A lot of the changes are what came with my Canadian 2022 Preferred (mid trim). No folding mirrors, cloth seats, hard plastic door cards, and no interior lighting.
Hello , well as far as I can see its a poor show from Hyundai , not sure if I ever told you my order on my Ioniq 5 Ultimate went from being 85 on the list to 1487 after waiting 15 months i go pist off I called another Genesis / Hyundai dealer and after a long chat i had a GV 60 within 2 day , to be honest i am really happy this happened I know the GV 60 is quite a lot more money but its really worth it for me. I have driven almost 20K miles in 14 months in all weathers heavy and rain and hot summer weather very pleased with the car . I think Hyundai need to have a good lower priced car to stay in the EV market , I can see BYD creeping up close behind them fast. Thank for the video.
Rear vent on my I5 isnt even that strong.. barely feel anything.. anyone else feel same way? Or is there a way to make to blow harder? Even if I turn up the blowing power.
Both the 5 and the 6 with the wifi receive a free trial period of a few months through Verizon while Bluelink in the 24s is free for your entire length of ownership of the vehicle.
I’ve got a 22 SE and I’d never buy the 24 SE. Cup holders in the back are a must. My SE also has padded armrests in the back. Can’t believe Hyundai went so cheap on the 24
Sure would be nice if you could have a simple switch to turn on your rear camera when you are driving in the rain. Simple solution to having no rear window wiper. Also, Hyundai should update their bluetooth so we do not have to have a code running to your phone. Should be a software fix.
Muskrat is THE sole thing keeping Tesla out of consideration at any price. Sorry, but as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, bigotry by the founder against my community means it doesn't get my hard earned money.
I got an email from Hyudai for this model. They have a "Special Lease" deal going on. $99 a month, now I know why it's so low 🤣 But... its going to be a work car for my guys so it will work!
Hyundai Pay is through the Bluelink and allows you to pay for parking automatically and even reserve parking while in route to your destination. And now with the 2024 models Bluelink is free for the lifetime of your ownership and not just the 3 years that came free with earlier models.
I was interested in the Ioniq 5. But, with all these downgrades without a price reduction, I don't know why I should go for this rather than a Tesla Model Y.
I have owned both cars, I would suggest that you rent each one for a week maybe thru Turo to really get an idea. My 2023 Ioniq SEL has the charging problem.......with no fix in sight....so there is that... so if you are going to go on a road trip or plan on driving more than 150 miles a day that would be a no go
@@dianeepler8685 Thanks, I am concerned about the ICCU and charging problems too. I was hoping that the 2024 version will solve those problems but the downgrades are a letdown. I plan to have it as a second car for mostly in-town and not-too-long trips. I am not in a rush and will research more.
@@TheHandsomebaby The ICCU issue is being addressed under recall. The charging problem is also remedied to a point. If your plug gets hot, it reduces the current draw through the plug instead of just shutting down and leaving you with no charge on the car. It's not the desirable option, but will be fixed when the NACS plug cutover is done.
It’s unfortunate cost cutting measures. I don’t drive an Ioniq anymore. I had the Limited trim. The soft plastics in the drivers upper part of the door were a must have for me. That’s where I rest my arm. The air vents in the rear were already not strong enough. Removing those is a huge mistake.
@@TheIoniqGuy My I5 actually has a little dent in the material from my elbow. Id hate having that hard plastic in place of the door cards on my 22 Limited.
The lack of USB C is not a big dwal whatsoever. There are adapters for that. However it seems that they reduced the price by $200USD but took away at least $2000USD worth of equipment. You never mentioned the seats but I doubt it had power seats either….and that is also not important at all either. Not good at all
As a SE AWD 2022 owner I don’t miss any of the features I never had. A few of them would be nice but hardly necessary. Ambient lighting isn’t in that group.
I was bummed about the SE not having rear vents and ambient lighting. Bummer. I did buy those usb things you recommended. For front and rear. Helped a little bit. Was always a tad underwhelming. My Tesla now im facing inverse problem that i bought too soon. the newer Teslas will come with ambient lighting. Highland and Juniper when they ship to US. Smh
Wow, the USB-A and rear vent removal is an automatic no go for my family. Good luck selling these Hyundai, my local dealer has only 75 Ioniq 5s in-stock.
With all these changes, especially the seat fabric, USB a, and expiring charging standard I'm not buying a 2024 ioniq5. I have to shop other electric cars in case my Odyssey, 170k miles, dies this year. So sad if I end up with another gas car. I know I don't want a hybrid because of reliability.
Canadian versions list for those that DON’T LIVE IN THE US. SE - Prefered SEL - Prefered Long Range/AWD Prefered Long Range LIMITED - Ultimate ( there are two options now for Ultimates. The LUXURY package has everything….except the vision roof. The ULTIMATE package has everything including the vision roof.
That's an unfortunate set of downgrades. I can't belive they're still using USB-A. I think the Kia EV6 is a better choice at this point, but I'm not sure what the price difference is. Also why is it so hard for Hyundai/Kia to just add a place to put sunglasses? Do they not have sun in Korea?
Haha idk but I’m not going to complain since it opened up a business opportunity for me and my little doohicky. I agree though, I think the EV6 as it stands today is the better option. 2024 EV6 hasn’t been announced yet so not sure what that’s going to look like in terms of changes
All these downgrades for 2024 with barely any of a price decrease is unacceptable imo. Almost $50k and so many hard plastics and no rear air vents is ridiculous, also still no USB C or wireless CarPlay? What is it Hyundai, 2017? This is a huge disappointment considering SEL models before this had so many more features for practically the same price.
I was looking forward to trading my 2022 lease in at the end of 24 for an Ioniq. I won’t get it now. The point of the higher price tag was the extra features. Hyundai you are so disappointing.

My concern with the digital rear view lcd/mirror is for those with glasses. In theory a progressive lens would be problematic. Hopefully it’ll be switchable for multiple drivers needs. 7:44
I have progressive lenses and have the digital rear view mirror on our Chevy Bolt. I love that mirror, and miss it on our I5. I had no issues with its use. It's an awesome feature to have as it still works when you have the vehicle in "truck mode" and stacked to the ceiling - something that is inevitable for our convention trips.
I added a WolfBox digital rear view mirror to my 23 SEL. Works fine with my old eyes and progressive lenses. Other car's headlights flicker, but so what.@@wolfman9999999
What a frustrating vehicle. It's cool, but seems more concerned with winning EV of the year awards than being something your average person might buy. The value was questionable before they lost the tax credit, and now it's really poor. The back is like Chevy bolt levels of cut down. That's a lot easier to live with when it comes with a Bolt price tag. Not 20k more.
More food for thought: it looks like the new rwd gv60 is less than 1k more than the rwd ioniq 5 limited. Why is the mainstream brand so close in price to the luxury brand? It doesn't have quite the same features, but you'd think they want more distinction between the two.
Right!? That base model GV60 has really caught my attention. Having just spent a week with one recently, the difference perceived luxury is night and day. Possible they’ve really caught some corners in the new base model though
Crazy that Hyundai is doing this when Tesla is cutting prices. Also new Model 3 seems to be getting nicer parts. Ford also cut prices. Hyundai is the outlier here and it’s going to hurt them.
I am glad that I bought the ioniq 6 and didn’t wait for the 2024 ioniq 5, because all of the changes that you mentioned is a serious downgrade with what you pay for this car…
Just bought a '23 SEL, and the downgrades here are insane. They are clearly trying to force ppl to the LTD. Huge mistake IMHO, I mean automakers ADD features over time not DELETE them. Note sure I would have bought this car as outfitted for '24.
I have had the Ioniq 5 on my list for a while. It keeps getting downgraded and the lease price for me seems to be going up. Looked like a cool car but I’m out

Have you considered used? You could get a used 2022 for probably sub $35k
So what is the difference now between the SEL and SE?
Not a lot of
So the SE is now the SEL. To be fair the rear vents don’t really work very well anyway, but these omissions are worth way more than $200 reduction.
please check the limited trim. thanks
Rear vent on my I5 isnt even that strong.. barely feel anything.. anyone else feel same way? Or is there a way to make to blow harder? Even if I turn up the blowing power.
i thought hotspot was free with bluelink ? or is that just the ioniq 6
Both the 5 and the 6 with the wifi receive a free trial period of a few months through Verizon while Bluelink in the 24s is free for your entire length of ownership of the vehicle.
Does the 2024 have wireless apple carplay and android auto?
No
Crazy that's not a feature in 2024 😅@@TheIoniqGuy
I’ve got a 22 SE and I’d never buy the 24 SE. Cup holders in the back are a must. My SE also has padded armrests in the back. Can’t believe Hyundai went so cheap on the 24
I noticed they are doing it with ICE too. Sel Tucson has Freaking Halogen Tail lights!!!
Sure would be nice if you could have a simple switch to turn on your rear camera when you are driving in the rain. Simple solution to having no rear window wiper.
Also, Hyundai should update their bluetooth so we do not have to have a code running to your phone. Should be a software fix.
i thought the dealer told me there would be a rear wiper... its only getting a digital rear view camera???
Nope. Rear wiper not coming till 2025
I loved the Ioniq 5 we had and hated the Tesla. But w the Tesla price cuts, it’s hard to pass up the Tesla.
Muskrat is THE sole thing keeping Tesla out of consideration at any price. Sorry, but as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, bigotry by the founder against my community means it doesn't get my hard earned money.
@@wolfman9999999 I’ve been so oblivious. I just looked it up and it’s pretty bad, especially to what he’s been doing to twitter.
I got an email from Hyudai for this model. They have a "Special Lease" deal going on. $99 a month, now I know why it's so low 🤣
But... its going to be a work car for my guys so it will work!
My 2023 Ioniq SEL has the charging problem.......with no fix in sight....so there is that... so if you are going to go on a road trip or plan on driving more than 150 miles a day that would be a no go
I’m renting a model Y beginning this Tuesday for a week so expect a video on my thoughts soon
@@TheIoniqGuy That will be extremely helpful. Thanks a lot.
I just drove the Ioniq 6 for a week with hard plastic upper doors panels and it really bothered my elbow resting it there
@@TheIoniqGuy My I5 actually has a little dent in the material from my elbow.
Not good at all
The seat adjustments remain the same as they’ve been since 22. Power driver manual passenger
As a SE AWD 2022 owner I don’t miss any of the features I never had. A few of them would be nice but hardly necessary. Ambient lighting isn’t in that group.
Why they downgrading the new version ?
I was bummed about the SE not having rear vents and ambient lighting. Bummer. I did buy those usb things you recommended. For front and rear. Helped a little bit. Was always a tad underwhelming. My Tesla now im facing inverse problem that i bought too soon. the newer Teslas will come with ambient lighting. Highland and Juniper when they ship to US. Smh
Damnit!! I didn't know there was so much downgrades to the 2024 SEL model. I just wish they had rear AC vents for my children.
Wow, the USB-A and rear vent removal is an automatic no go for my family. Good luck selling these Hyundai, my local dealer has only 75 Ioniq 5s in-stock.
Huge rebates of the 2023 to get people to buy them. Do I see rebates increasing on the 2024 Limited in the near future?
Likely. Many of the rebates for 2023s were happening well before the 2024s went on sale
Thanks.
Extra airbags and better seatbelt safety over vents and soft touches here and there - any day!
I've always wanted a Limited anyway (If we're dreaming....) I just want one without the stupid huge expensive tires.
I love the cloth in my 2022 se
Canadian versions list for those that DON’T LIVE IN THE US.
SE - Prefered
SEL - Prefered Long Range/AWD Prefered Long Range
LIMITED - Ultimate ( there are two options now for Ultimates. The LUXURY package has everything….except the vision roof. The ULTIMATE package has everything including the vision roof.
At least we canadians still have a backseat armrest and driver seat storage net🤣🤣I wonder if anyone would buy a 2024 in the US
SE is a wise choice.
Hyundai pay could be an integrated toll gizmo. Audis have them.
Maybe they’ll rethink what they’re doing for 2025 with the refresh but I’m not getting my hopes up
@@TheIoniqGuy oh they won’t. Once features are taken away there’s no turning back.
(to be continued)
Wow. You managed to turn me off of the Ioniq 5 (and Hyundai) in less than 8 minutes. Some of those are pretty cheesy downgrades.
They sure are
Cost-down at its best. Looks like one should wait for the facelift or quickly grab a MY23 while stock lasts.
My opinion of Hyundai was it was a cheaply made, all plastic POC. I was beginning to rethink that perception, but it looks like it's going backwards.

Bro it looks like you have heart on your chin at the spot where there is no beard
These “updates” are horrible! Thank you for sharing. Looks like going used would be the way to go vs a 2024.
I’d agree with you
My concern with the digital rear view lcd/mirror is for those with glasses.
Why called SEL here uk get premium or ultimate or namsang edition only
These 2024s are not gonna sell well
What a frustrating vehicle.
As much as I love my Ioniq 5, the number of “awards” it’s gotten has me wondering how many of them are simply bought
47K for this car is not going to sell a lot of them.
Oof...it seems minimal, but 2024 cuts a LOT of corners/costs but really declines the QOL
24 looks garbage i better stick to my 22 sel
Right? At this point there would be absolutely no reason to trade in for another SEL. Limited or nothing
looks like a budget car in some ways, no air vents and hard touch doors in the back for this price is awful.
USB-A for a car of the future. WTF
Feels like a bid downgrade. The lack of rear vents alone would make me reconsider buying. Would not have bought our EV6 without the rear vents.
No rear wiper yet? What a shamle
Just bought a '23 SEL, and the downgrades here are insane. They are clearly trying to force ppl to the LTD. Huge mistake IMHO, I mean automakers ADD features over time not DELETE them. Note sure I would have bought this car as outfitted for '24.
No digital key 2 or wireless AA/CP? BOO! Same with the 120v EVSE 😬😬
I have had the Ioniq 5 on my list for a while. It keeps getting downgraded and the lease price for me seems to be going up. Looked like a cool car but I’m out
Can’t say I blame you
