Many adults or older adults still don't have it all together or know what they truly want to do with their lives. I think they can definitely be the chosen ones. There's no time limit to improving yourself or starting anew.
actually its because most of the novels in that genre are aimed at young adults so they have young adult protagonists. pick up any adult fiction book and its rare to see a protag under 25. 30-40 something def most common. also your argument is kindof the opposite of the real logic.... a 40 yo is way more likely to turn their life around than a 17 yo since they have way more opportunity to do so.

I remember my dad's retelling of my first eye exam. My kindergarten teacher said she though I had eye problems since I was squinting at the blackboard too much. And suggested my parents to take me to the hospital for an eye exam. I had to sit there in line at 4 years of age. My dad said I couldn't sit still I was clearly loosing my patience. Later on we found a good doctor that not only worked there but also owned his private office space for after hours visits. The cost was roughly the same since dad had to loose a day of work sitting there at the hospital. And the money loss was the same as going to this other doctor after work which had wayyyy shorter queues.

On the tree thing: I currently have too many trees for the room I have (cherry, apple, fir, 2 pine varients, and avocado) and I have to say breeding/propogating them and raising them to a height fit for planting is a task in of itself. I wear men's pants with pockets that can fit my phone, my house keys and a pack of tissues, but my wallet is too thick, I need to have a charger and/or powerbank with me, I have to have my lip gloss, maybe some perfume, public transport cards (if I put those in my pockets they'll fall out every time I need my phone), wet wipes and/or sanitizer, some chewing gum, maybe some female hygiene products... it's not like all of the shit we want to take to work or to a party is going to fit in pockets (and that's without mentioning purses are a fashion statement anyway, it's not even about the function). But at least with my pockets I can make a quick errand run with just my phone in one pocket and bank card in the other, or go for a walk without having that weight on my shoulder purely to keep my keys on me.
