    Just removed the heatsinks from my 48GB G.Skill 7200MTs kit. 2 hours in a glass dish submerged in MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) and the heatsinks just pulled off with the lightest of finger pressure. Removed the remaining tape from the back with a fingernail and back into the dish for an hour to dissolve the remaining adhesive, occasionally brushing with a small soft brush. Finally cleaned with fresh MEK and another soft brush. Now ready to fit the Bykski RAM sleeves and waterblock!

    You may want to try thin guitar strings with each end tied to a something for handles. We used to use box end wrenchs using it to remove car windsheilds and the foam adhesive on car badge/emblems. Now i use it for ram sticks. Razor blades can really be FAFO.

    Heat gun set on low or a hair dryer. Safer than either method shown here. NEVER use a double-edged razor in your hand, if you value your skin. That's what single-edged blades are for.

    You can also use a hair dryer on a low heat to weaken the glue or if you have a GOOD heat gun with a reliable temperature setting, you can use that, just keep it below 90c, though this has obvious risks.

Just lifted the heatsinks with a little bit of force. Though, as it turns out, they are actually thermal pads down there, not glue strips. So, I guess I didn't need to remove them.

    • @memitim171
      @memitim171 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The DRAM chips were fine but the controller was overheating causing instability since the sink wasn't contacting it, it actually runs cooler without the sink trapping the heat in. Ideally they would be replaced with actually competent sinks but you could just stick some thermal pad where it wasn't making contact and put them back on.

      @@Kaesarx using heat will not be a problem, getting the sticks over 100c isn't the same as getting them that hot when using them in a PC. Just keep the heat below the temperature when solder melts.

    • @112Famine
      @112Famine ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kaesarx Yes I know, this is the problem with the internet, things can be read the wrong way. 😃 I build custom water cooled PCs & use a heat gun to bend hard tubing, or a gas flame to bend glass tubing, if you keep a part moving & do not rush a memory stick should be ok.
      A solvent he used was overkill I think, 99% IPA & high grade 45% distilled white vinegar, a mix of 50/50 I think would do it faster & safer. And NOTHING better in a spray bottle for cleaning a kitchen & is safe around food. But might melt car clear coat & paint... maybe just use normal vinegar @ 5%.
      Mix mixture will kill toenail fungus if you spray our infected nails after your morning shower evey day, but do not get it on your skin, It is an acid.
