This is a breakdown of the Joe Rogan Experience #1175 with Chris Kresser and Dr. Joel Kahn. Kahn represents the plant based vegan side whereas Kresser represents the (mostly) plant based omnivore or "nutrivore" side.
The topics we'll look at in this breakdown are:
    ・The worth of Epidemiology studies
・Vegetables counteracting the supposed bad effects of meat
・Does saturated fat cause heart disease?
・Why sugar & Saturated fat together is particularly bad
・Does meat cause you to age faster? mTOR, methionine, Homocysteine
・Does meat or fish via TMAO promote heart disease?
    ・Nutrient density of meat
    ・Vitamin deficiencies in vegans
・Whether people should rely on supplements
・Brief commentary on the Carnivore Diet

Seems like every side of the conversation simply tries to push their own agenda instead of trying to cooperate. Some scientists' egos along with peer pressure do not let them change their minds, since it would be considered unprofessional. I believe the truth will surface eventually, but for now we gotta try things out on our own and see what works for us short/long term. Bottom line is, if you are already concious of this whole topic, you are most likely ahead of the people who aren't, unless you think you've researched it all and you close your mind to any new knowledge that might be on its way, which may happen to be contradictory to what you thought of as true.

    • @DirtyPoul
      @DirtyPoul 5 ปีที่แล้ว +143

@@patrolmostwanted I don't agree with you. The primary reason for why we know so little is because the research is so difficult to conduct because of a number of reasons:
      1. It's difficult to track exactly what a large group of people eat and exactly what the results are.
      2. People are different. What works for some may not work for others. Allergies is a prime example.
      3. Biology is incredibly complicated. The things that matter in our diet cannot be broken down to just a handful of factors. We're talking hundreds of chemical compounds and many more interactions between them.
It's not about someone hiding the truth because of conflicting interests. It's about the data being low quality and incredibly difficult to interpret.

I was so confused when he claimed Okinawa has a low saturated fat diet?? Anybody who has ever been to Japan or even closeby countries such as Korea will tell you that both historically and today huge amount of dishes are made with all kinds of fats. The war and the resulting famine and diseases is what temporarily messed up the access to fatty resources but otherwise I think its pretty ignorant to say they ate no fatty foods

@@destinymeansfuture7704 Your partner may be Japanese, but I would wager she was not japanese-born. I've been there twice, my ancestry is Cantonese Chinese, near HK and where we are similar to Japanese, is our cultural reliance on fresh seafood. I find it disturbing that anyone asian would put forth the argument that Veganism is either healthy or traditional. There is no beef or red meat in Asia as there is little pasture-land for grazing, and thus most of the population is lactose-intolerant to some degree. However, chickens and pigs are a regular source of protein (pigs for sure in China) and green/veggies are a traditional presence on a dinner-menu, but fruits to a lesser degree.
At a minimum, asians cultures that near the coast were heavy consumers of seafood. And the last time I checked, seafood is relatively strong in cholesterol and a variety of trace minerals Also, Japanese egg consumption per capita is higher than any other country in the world. I think the thing people miss with diets especially vegan or keto or whatever is that a lot of the benefits are coming from what you are *_not_* eating or doing. I went vegan 3 years ago as an experiment. I lost a lot of fat, felt great and looked better. Then I had a family tragedy and went back to my old habits and before long I had gained it all back. Now I'm on fruit, vegetable, meat and wild edible diet. I've lost fat, feel great and I look better. Even though these diets are different there is something they both have in common.
Both times I went on these diets I gave up caffeine, alcohol, smoking, processed sugar, junk food, exercised regularly, meditated regularly and had a positive attitude. Sometimes what you don't do is more important than what you do - sometimes though. I honestly can't choose which diet was better, but I feel like I'm more free including meat in my diet.
I feel like I should have some advice or something imspirational to say here so...um..don't eat yellow snow?

In fact, fasting has shown to have a lot of benefits. When you fast, you abstain from all foods and drinks (except for water, unsweetened tea/coffee). I believe that it allows some parts of your body to rest and recover (like your gut) and your hormones to stabilize (like insulin). It could be that a lot of your health problems could have been caused by eating too often for many years.

For a year I stayed with a Japanese host family who's mother side were Okinawan in ancestry with the great grandpa and great grandma still alive at over a 100 years old. The household basically cooked and ate a lot of okinawan dishes which means lots of pork plus they love their raw eggs. They eat eggs raw with natto (fermented soybeans, that taste like mucus to me), they dip their stewed pork in it like a sauce, they mix it with hot rice for breakfast. Of course they also eat lots of fermented picked veggies and bitter gourd but they have tons of saturated fat in their diet.

There have been so many "studies-of-the-day"-recommended diets that I've tried out, but through them all, there are just 4 things I've learned that ring true for me (yes, this is anecdotal evidence).
1.) Different strokes for different folks. Find what works for you.
2.) Intermittent fasting helps keep my gut healthy and my mind clear.
3.) Sugar is the devil, so I heavily limit my intake.
    4.) Sleep is essential.

    • @Goabnb94
      @Goabnb94 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

What I've learned (pun intended) is that most nutritional studies are flawed because they will never be long term clinical trials. There is just no way of doing it. Its easy enough to do for something like smoking that has a big negative effect on health, but for tiny effects that might take 50 years to manifest? And so how can you prove the variable at fault was one food or the other? So "studies" claiming to have the answer to the "right" diet, are usually flawed and while they may have some valuable take aways, they tend not to be hard and fast truths.

Been Vegan for 2 months. Considered myself already healthy before just by not eating processed foods, not drinking and not smoking. Here's what happened with nothing but a change in diet: my complexion is more even and my skin is smoother. My eyes are brighter and more vivid. Hair is glossier. I have more energy to exercise. No more acne. I feel lighter even though I gained 3 kilos. My dark circles are gone. I sleep better. I 100% believe I've made the right choice

    13:15 "Heretical"
When someone who claims to be "on the side of the science" starts throwing around accusations of heresy, you know he's not interested in science.
He has some personal, emotional investment in veganism being pushed onto people, not in actually helping them.

the meat and dairy industry love confusion, that's why they pay for articles to be made constantly. with confusion, change is unlikely.

not only do they pay for articles, but they fund studies as well.

You probably wont let us know in 50 years.
Keto is a horrible diet and we have long term studies showing the damage it does because this diet was invented to help epileptic children.
