I don't know about you, but I'm seeing the 'crop deaths' argument come up way too often recently, potentially fuelled by Joe Rogan frequently bringing up 'facts' about how vegans are killing more animals than non-vegans. So I think it's time to delve into this 'ultimate argument' against veganism and answer the hard question, are we responsible for killing more animals during crop production? animal feed crop death is imensily worse.. yes insect die for vegan crops. but more insect die for crops for cattle feed... "cow also walk on insect omg" stop breeding them? xD lol
All Joe Rogan does is listen to these omnivores or carnivores (lol) and copy what they say without actually looking into the evidence to see if it's correct or not. The debate between Chris Kresser and James Wilks was so funny lol.
@@bluemeister22 That's just what you tell yourself to not feel bad when you eat them. They are all individuals with personalities and a will to live their life. You sentence them to die for you every time you put meat on your plate.
Winston Smith, I went vegan 7 months ago, and lost 17 lbs. But now my weight loss has stopped cos I found vegan junk food lol. Vegan pizza here I come! Lol. Well done!👏👏☺️☺️❤️❤️✌️
Fantastic! Just make sure you're getting all the protein, vitamins and nutrients you need, it's very easy for people to go vegan and just eat leafy salads all day and then complain that the vegan diet is making them weak and low energy.
@Insanitygamer: This is SO TRUE! I went plant based without researching or talking to someone that is plant based and I went downhill for almost a year. With the right amount of protein, healthy fats and nutrients I feel amazing now. I'm on year ✌🏼
ive been a vegan for 7 years but i gained weight bc i had to learn how to cook n enjoy food (i was sickly thin before and now im normalish like medium thin i guess?) actually trying to lose a bit of weight for summer but its hard lol 😅
I seriously can’t stand these people. I’m Korean and we ate dog when I was little. They get all haughty about a dog but then disregard all other animals. Look down on people for eating a dog but then treat cows, pigs, and chickens like they are nothing. I thought that was really weird.
Wow, a dog? I know in the U.S. we have to watch koreans and missing neighborhood dogs! My friends dog was stolen by her Korean neighbors, they hid her dog, but she heard it while calling out her name and rescued her, she confronted the neighbors. She found out her son was going to be the neighbors meal!! Ate you proud of eating dogs?! I know other animals also matter, but for you to say you ate dogs like your proud of it, makes it even more disgusting!!

@@diandragomez6208 What point were you trying to make then? In the video you shared it was about how animals eat the inedible part of the soy plant but the soy was grown too for the oil which more non vegans eat. Soy that is used for tofu, etc is a much smaller number. The animal agriculture industry is a big reason why soy is grown for oil at all.

So is E..d or maybe just deceitful - when he talks about percentages of soy/corn for animal feed he misses the part where itnearly ALWAYS has multiple uses. With Soy - soy oil for humans is the money making gold - and the left overs are used as animal feed. Lots of examples of this with all the different crops, usually it has a profitable human use first and the animals are fed the remaining husks and less profitable parts.
@@soypusher5567 You non vegans don't think we research into that? From official pricing soy oil is worth roughly $1100 per metric tonne, soymeal on the other hand is worth in the quality that most farmers buy, roughly $600 per metric tonne. However from soybean plantations approximately 80% is soymeal and 20% is oil. So in the quantities produced the soymeal accounts for roughly 2/3 of revenue and therefore is the more profitable. So the argument that this is just a byproduct of the oil industry is a lie as the majority of soymeal is produced with the desire for soymeal rather than extras from soy oil
@@soypusher5567, what @Not Me said, and furthermore, there are only a few uses where soy oil is indispensable, in most cases it's preferred only because of price, and the price is low because it's a byproduct of meal production. So, it seems your screen name is inaccurate. But whatever you're pushing certainly is deep.
@@soypusher5567 no the leftovers aren't used for animal feed, the bulk of soy is used for animal feed. Corn is different depending on country, in the US corn syrup is a huge industry, but i think you'll find that vegans avoid it more than omnis, as vegans are typically more health conscious, although of course not always.
@@soypusher5567 It's a moot point anyways, you'll always have to feed animals something, it's basic earth science and energy levels, the fact is you cannot feed everyone on the planet a meat based diet without feeding the animals, and to do this without factory farming is impossible without taking up insane amounts of land and this isn't even taking into consideration the pollution these animals cause in terms of sewage and methane emissions (which is worse than CO2).
Precisely! Don't meat eaters eat bread, burger buns, hot dog rolls etc? Potato fries? My favourite is the almond milk 'argument'. For sure everybody eats almonds, not only vegans in their 'milk'
What's funny to me is that you can't see your own hypocrisy. You're the ones who are making a fuss out of killing animals, but refuse to take responsibility when they are killed to feed you.
Nice! I improved a lot in my cooking skills after going vegan, learned of new vegetables and recipies. It's actually a great way to enjoy the food you eat more, hope you have a similar journey!
Nice! I think it's important to acknowledge that if you "slip up" you're not failing! I remember when I started and realized that I'd been consuming gelatin I felt so guilty. Things aren't black and white. :))
Ed strawmanned the argument at 0:45 because the clip was specifically about hunting. A wild boar, deer, etc. do not eat farmed grains so a hunter is not responsible for any crop deaths. So it is very possible that a hunter is responsible for fewer deaths than a vegan. Of course a lot of hunters (e.g. Rogan) use this as an excuse to justify gluttonous consumption from animal agriculture but that only reflects their poor character and lack of self discipline.
no, nugent and rogan are pitching the argument as hunting vs veganism, as if factory farming isn't responsible for the overwhelming majority of animal deaths. hunting is not sustainable at all if omnivores converted to that rather than factory farming. rogan's podcast is full of bad faith arguments.
@@TheOnlyTalia Right, but they are not telling other people to adopt a hunting lifestyle -- as you point out it is not viable for the current meat consumption to be provided by hunting. Also, most people (e.g. myself) have no interest in hunting. I think Rogan, Nugent, etc. are more annoyed by the "preachiness" of vegans claiming they have some moral high ground. However, this is not true since, theoretically there could be a hunter who survives on precisely three deer per year thus is responsible for fewer deaths than an average vegan.
@@TheOnlyTalia Also, for what it's worth, I've seen a couple of clips where Rogan sounds pretty opposed to factory farms and slaughterhouses. I just think he does not have the self discipline to be 100% hunter or 100% vegan. So he uses the "amorality" of hunting as an excuse for his gluttonous habits, e.g. eating fast food.
@@mistahkurtz2351 That's a bad faith argument again, how about instead of comparing a non industrialized hunter with an industrialized vegan, compare a non industrialized hunter to a non industrialized vegan who grows their own food. The vegan would result in not killing any animals and still have the moral high ground. Most wont do either as both are a harder lifestyle to adhere to and most don't have the means to do it either. Still not a solution to the problem, just excuses. Next... Edited for coherence lol
Thank you so much for this Ed. When I see this information spread across the internet it's tough, it really gets me down. It's flat out exhausting to see so many of my fellow human beings so willingly and blatantly ignore the truth out of greed and self-affirmation. It's like nobody gives a shit, like nobody will make the slightest self-sacrifice for a better future, like people only care about being right, about wining the argument and feeling good all of the time; having the "freedom" to do whatever you want no matter the victim (horribly, ironically, eventually, themselves). I honestly think that vegan activists should do more research. The whole thing about it being more eco friendly is false. 2 percent of a cows diet is edible by humans. Most of the water being used is grey water (rain water) and the land being used is useless to crop farmers because of the rocky terrain and the slopes that are to steal to grow anything. You say that plants don’t feel pain which is technically true since they lack a functioning brain but the do in fact let out screeching noises when in distress, they let out a chemical as a distress call. Not to mention that they do develop bonds with other plants. They can communicate with plants that are close to them and even show a bond when the other plants are moved far away. There has also been no scientific proof that a vegan diet is healthier then a normal one. It has been seen that vegans are more likely to have a stroke but less likely to have certain heart diseases. I personally respect your lifestyle choices but I don’t see why you guys act like you are better then us.
The other thing that bothers me about this argument is, unless they are on a carnivore diet, likely most of their diet is made up of plants as well. Its not like only vegan eat plants!
Just an FYI that humans can’t survive on a 100% carnivorous diet because they would suffer severe health problems and likely die. Even native Alaskans and Canadians that historically survived on fish and marine mammal meat and blubber had to eat some vegetation including the stomach contents of animals or they would suffer things like scurvy and digestive diseases from lack of fiber.
@@reneelazzareschi9953 I always find this interesting with the rise of the carnivore diet. Except his arguments are bullshit. I dont feel like spending an hour picking out every issue in the video but a few stick out to me early on. He called Chris a quack and conveniently leaves out a key detail in the study he was reading and its context. Yes you can grow more protein with soy and corn... but that is BECAUSE most of that protein is being used as cattle feed. Cows QUADRUPLE the protein gains from sources like corn. To get as much protein as a cow obtains from eating corn we would need to grow 4x the amount of corn. Also less land is used directly for cattle feed than it is for human consumption. I'm not sure what bullshit statistic he is citing. I guess land that ends up making its way INTO cattle feed? Why in this entire video did he also conveniently leave out the arguments from the people who in the same video he's "debunking" like how most cattle feed is made from parts of planted food which is inedible to humans. Most of the food that cattle actually gets isn't from land designated specifically for cattle field. Rather we reuse a lot of waste products either from land used for human feed or for other purposes (somewhere in the line of manufacturing) that can be recycled by feeding it to cattle. Its waste product. But I mean believe your vegan friend. Too bad its all BS.

Actually, being a fruitarian is the best way to limit death. The fruits of a plant are the only thing nature gives up willingly (without resistance (when ripe)) for consumption. Many seeds spread and propagate through the consumption and digestive breakdown of them. Every species on earth, both plant and animal, gives resistance to death. Only the fruits of a plant willingly give themselves up for consumption. That being said, I do agree a plant-based diet reduces the overall plant and animal deaths as opposed to any other diet aside from fruitarian. To improve the stats even more it is important to look at how we grow our food and put serious effort into much more sustainable practices. This can be said towards the farming of animals and their feed as well. No, I'm not a fruitarian, but I do view it as the ideal diet.
These people are just making excuses to justify their bad behavior. They don't want to be held accountable for their actions so they lie to themselves and others
Did you notice how he mentioned protein numbers but neglected the fact that cows grazing in a field doesn't destroy the natural habitats of other species of mice, rabbits, birds, insects etc.. cows grazing doesn't harm any of these things yet crop farming extinct species by destroying their natural habitats. I’ve read that a few dozen ships transporting hundreds of thousands of live animals were put on wait for days during the Suez canal incident. These animals are siting crammed, suffering from heat strokes, dehydrated, hungry. I once crammed with 5 friends in the back of a car for a 20 min ride and i was so sick and almost having panic attacks. Those animals don’t have any idea what’s happening to them, they must be overwhelmed by panic.
@Novus Ordo A few years ago i’ve read a short sci-fi story on a blog and although i didn’t like the subject i nevertheless keep thinking about it lately. In it our world was a simulation made by future human civilization, somewhere in the year 3000 or 5000 i can’t remember. They had immense technological power, every individual was a small god able to do and experience a fantastic number of things, but this was also their biggest problem. You can’t just allow anyone access to immense technological power because they could become a threat to society. So their solution was creating a huge simulation in which people were borne and lived believing they live in the real world, doing whatever is in their nature, showing their "true face" as it were. Those who proved themselves within the simulation that they were caring, responsible, altruistic persons, eventually died within the simulation and they were pulled out in the real world in the body of their perfectly healthy teenage self. Those who didn’t respect life, didn’t cooperate with other people, who didn’t engage in social matters, were left to die in the simulation without granting them the knowledge of the real world and the option to take part. The sim world was chosen to recreate the 21Century because this was exactly the historical period where there was a lot of knowledge and access to information, so people could learn from history, experience past ideas and ways of life in the same time with future ideas and ways of life, develop a rich personality (which was valuable for the outside world), but in the same time wasn’t yet offering too much knowledge of simulation technology and other things. This is how that future society got all its members, this is how they were "schooled" and this is how they were selected without any risk of letting any savage, irresponsible or irreverent individuals in the real world. Once out they got to live till about 300 years in good health. I personally hate the idea of simulation, this notion is an abomination, but this story haunts me and i definitely like their motivation for creating a simulated world. If this were true, there’s at least one good thing: people like you won’t ever get out.
It’s a nice story, but it quickly made me uncomfortable as I thought about it. My main problem with it is, what about the people who are born into a life in which they have virtually no agency? The children who die of hunger or abuse. The people who are trafficked into slavery and never get out, never getting a chance to exercise their own free will, let alone their morality. And those born with severe developmental problems, or debilitating mental disorders. Where would they fit in such a simulation? They don’t get the chance to develop, find or prove their character, so if they’re not the ones being tested, would they have to be some sort of AI? That’s what makes me really uncomfortable with this idea. All in all this whole thing is paradise reimagined for technocrats. A fun idea to explore sure, but it has many of the same problems of the original paradise, and some new ones too.
@@raniaa2592 Rania, it’s always nice to encounter thoughtful and caring people like you. I think your insight is spot on on every account. This particular description of a simulated world is indeed paradise reimagined by a technological generation. Sharing the story cannot bring much harm though. Just like the concept of paradise, it tethers the psyche to some wonderful thing to come if you work to overcome your bad nature, and work for the common good of all beings. The only problem i see with sharing the religious paradise/hell story is that people’s unconscious might get the idea that "good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell *anyway,* so why do any work to change this fleeting earthly life for the better"-this attitude contributes to maintaining hell right here on earth. As for the concept of paradise in itself, yes, it has a number of big problems. Yet, the simulation scenario depicts a world that’s different then the one that’s under heaven. As you’ve said, not all creatures within it must be conscious. And as much as i hate to say it, i’d be incredibly relieved if i’d find out that all those people with severe developmental problems or mental disorders, and all the farmed animals, were something akin unconscious NPC’s. But i don’t believe it-we don’t have any evidence to believe in such a simulation, we don’t have any way to know if all people within such a simulation would be conscious or not, *and it would be a grave mistake to think less of others based on a story.* The world i’d like to live in is one similar to that depicted by a british philosopher when he was asked how the year 3000 will look like (*). That’s the paradise i dream of. I agree with everything he’s saying there, although i think that he ignores one important thing, an immensely valuable aspect for any society-maintaining a rich eclectic mix of individual personalities. In a perfect peaceful society you can’t nurture sensible, mature, complex and subtle minds. Most poets, musicians and great people of all kinds emerged out of a dynamic tension between heaven and hell. And as far as i can imagine there’s no way for a future society to directly design a human being. They’d have to safely recreate the optimal conditions for human development to happen naturally, and in my opinion there aren’t any better conditions than the early 21Century. This changes nothing, even if we live in a simulation and this happens to be its purpose, you cannot take this knowledge to change how you live your life. Also, the simulation scenario doesn’t change anything for the trillion Darwinian beings that lived in the real actual history of this planet. The only people who would benefit if it’s true, is us. *rares-mircea-82.medium.com/passages-from-david-pearces-answer-to-the-question-how-will-the-year-3000-look-like-c83a3dd78b8d

@tannakaobi1 I understand that. Everyone in my life is non-vegan, and thinks eating meat is an ecosystem thing. I personally feel like if we had farms where animals died due to natural causes, that would be a bit different. One of my friends grew up on a farm like that. It would be refreshing to have a politician actually prioritize ethics, and the environment of the world we live in, over other things. I would at least like to see what impact it would make.
What do we have to do to get Earthling Ed on the Joe Rogan Podcast. Of course considering that’s something that Ed wanted to do. It’s time, it really is time for that to happen.
An Aussie here. 12 years ago I moved out to country Victoria. An area of poor pastureland (i.e. depleted soils and just whatever grasses that had self-sown) that had been substantially used for grazing (as well as gold fossicking during the gold rush era). So no specific crops or plant industry in the area at all. The move meant that our various sticks of furniture and knick knacks went into a storage facility on the outskirts of the town for about a year. The storage was weatherproof, but had roller door access. During that time in storage, there had been both a locust plague and a mouse plague. When I was getting the items out of storage at the end of that time, the smell from the mouse urine was very strong and there were considerable numbers of bodies of both locusts and mice. The locusts had found their way in but couldn't figure out how to get out again, and just starved to death. The mice had made themselves a nice warm home, but there was no nearby source of food or water for them either. They also would have died from starvation. Others in the area complained of losses from both plagues, but they had animal feed stored at their properties which the plague critters were eating into. Left to it's own, nature seems to be quite good at self-regulating. It's only when mankind plays with the environment that all the balances are lost. I seriously believe everybody should be more involved in a small is beautiful mindset with their food needs. Growing more of what they eat in their backyards and relying far less on the need for any huge mono-culture enterprise! Learn more about permaculture and companion planting. Lean about making environments conducive to predator bugs like mantises rather than using chemicals.
Going on my 8th month of being vegan. I have never felt better mentally or physically. I don't feel bad after meals due to bad conscious. Was vegetarian for 4 years prior, but that little extra step that seemed so unreachable was in fact easy. Being vegan has made me a better cook and a better person. I feel more morally aware of my surroundings and it's all around been a great experience. Thank you Ed for inspiring me to keep it up! You being one of the many reasons I took the extra step and went vegan. It was an epiphany and it's hard to keep it to myself. I do however keep it on the down low due to all my family and friends being omni, but deep inside i wish i had the courage to be as "out" there as you and many other activists, maybe some day.
Me too. Going vegan had a surprising effect on my mental health, to the point I got off my medication for depression and anxiety. My life situation has not changed either, just what I ate and my moral stance about what I put on my plate. I still wonder if veganism has a studied impact on mental health, I haven’t found anything so far.
Just a slight correction- hay and silage is not harvested with combine harvesters. Combines cut and pull in the grain stalks to remove the grain. Hay and silage is just cut and the grass is left intact (usually cut prior to any grains forming on the stalks). Hay is left to dry before collection and baling and silage is collected immediately after harvest. So combines crush any life on the stalks, whereas the cutting of grass is left more or less intact.
As an Australian, I vividly remember a mice plague. Driving through the wheatbelt in the mid 90's with thousands of mice running across the road, for hundreds of kms. (I was not driving, I was only around 13 at the time). I don't remember anything like this happening since then although to be fair, I haven't lived in that area since 1998. Excellent video as always, Ed.
@Novus Ordo Oh dear dear dear. I used to be like you buddy but it is really not a cult. Without sounding patronising you are very uneducated. I ate meat for most of my life but this is the way humans are meant to thrive. If you had the balls to give up meat and dairy for a year and ate a proper Vegan diet you would be blown away by how wrong you are. Your taste buds change and so does your smell. Cooked Meat starts to smell revolting and if you actually were able to not come here and attack people when you don’t know what you are talking about and watched a few documentary’s you would realise how stupid you sound I’m afraid pal. Fast food chains partnering with Vegan meat companies is just the start of a huge movement that is happening. I wish I could discuss with non vegans as Ed. When I argue/discuss with other vegans I get so emotional and has zero patience. I feel like I need to do some training about that ...... I wish I could be calm when I discuss.
For me it's all the pressure! I'm pretty much the only vegan in my friend group and I'm bad at discussions as well. It really helps to take a few breaths before answering and to assess the motivation behind the stated argument: I'm pretty bad with accusations being thrown at me (they make me emotional) but a genuine question or query from my friends I can answer calmly. Good luck in your discussions, I'm rooting for you 🌱
He is so calm because he knows most of the answers because he studies the argument he is very informed about food production, nutrition etc etc. If you know a shit is obvious that you may "lose" the discussions and get fustrated. Amat victoria curam= succes loves preparation.
It is easy to get emotional when talking about things that matter a lot to you. It is very frustrating when people continue to blindly consume animal products while making all the excuses under the sun to make themselves feel better, but you need to remember that you were in their position at some point, and it took a calm conversation to spark the self reflection that led to change!

@Linuz Bengtsson you sound pretty hateful and angry. I've been seeing your comments all over this comment section. Instead of getting angry at people who disagree with you, I vote you try and listen to their stance with as little judgment as possible and then come to whatever conclusion you wish, without any hate for yourself or for others. Insulting people on the internet will just make you unhappy. ✌🏾
The unfortunate reality is that many individuals often listen to short segments of influential figures like Joe Rogan, accept these snippets as absolute truth, and move on without conducting further research. This practice can solidify misconceptions, underscoring the critical and potentially perilous impact of social media.
The silly thing about this is there’s a huge difference between intentionally shooting a cow and eating them vs unintentionally trampling a field mouse. Also the non vegans who use this argument forget that they and the animals they eat also eat plants. It’s not like we’re the only ones eating plants. This whole argument is silly. Veganism is about doing the least harm. Perfection is impossible, but we can try our best.
I never get tired of learning from you Ed. You're helping everyone evolve as individuals and you help me be the best vegan and animal advocate I can be! May we one day live harmoniously with all life🌱🐃❤️
@Juba - يوبا - ⵊⵓⴱⴰ - ᛄᚢᛒᚨ I'm not sure what you mean. Re-wilding the land and giving it back to nature so that the animals can repopulate it (hopefully without human intervention) does not seem comparable to an endoparasitoid extraterrestrial feeding on humans.
You aren't evolved and animals are nothing but food and pets for us to do with what we please. Hoping you'll find your way back to true human nature soon. ✌🏻🍖🥩❤
This was VERY useful to me! I've heard this argument so much lately so I'm glad you debunked it. I hope in the future that we can have a zero-death crop production as well!
@Jonathan Joestar, There are alternatives to cow and pig feces, we could use human feces for example. Or use fermentation methods, or use dead plants for fertilising the soils. We currently breed 56 billion land animals each year. We have created the problem, and we can solve the problem. Don't breed them at all.
@Jonathan Joestar, Out of all the land we currently use for growing crops, about 80 % of it grows crops that we feed to animals. We could easily feed the entire world population (and many more) if we stopped breeding billions of animals each year just to kill them.

Thank you so much for standing up against these claims. Anytime I watch someone try to dismantle veganism I get super stressed out thinking about all the people they are influencing to make more unethical unsustainable decisions. After watching your videos I feel so much more relieved that they aren’t the only big influencers. I’ve been vegan for 5 years now and I’m amazed by how much the community has grown.
The number 1 logical defect in veganism is the oversimplification of things. "Yeah fish are dying so lets not eat fish again, cows fart methane so lets not eat cows, oh poor farm animals are getting exploitated so lets not eat clams and honey too."
Dismantling Veganism isn't hard. It's a high failure, problem riddled eating disorder of massive hypocrisy and B.S. period. It is NOT healthier, you are NOT an Herbivore and Vegans are gullible, uneducated failures on human Physiology and nutrition and debunked backwards and forwards and are notorious ableists and ignoramuses.
Thank you for your part in saving lives Kristy 🙏🏼 I remember getting discouraged when I became plant based, not knowing what to create to eat. I got stuck eating the same few things and didn't know what I needed to stay healthy. The key is variety and color along with getting enough protein and healthy fats. I lacked protein and certain nutrients my first year of being plant based. Someone told me about RITUAL womens multi vitamin for vegans. I've been taking them for a year now 👍🏼 I'm sending love and support your way 💗
@@Boomer289-ol2vvso your argument against veganism is that “ humans are smarter than animals “ by the same logic, I’m guessing you don’t mind eating or killing dogs and cats either obviously. Also , why should we stop the food chain and segregate only according to animals ? I’m sure the average rich person is stronger and smarter than poor uneducated kids , right ? Why don’t we exploit them under the pretence of the societal food chain ? In this argument I’m trying to say that we humans don’t follow the laws of nature. Murder and rape is common in animal society but we humans frown upon the same. Why ? Because we are capable of sentience and the concept of morality. Just because something is part of our prehistoric nature doesn’t make it right by our current society’s standards. Also.. lmao we have long since left the food chain, we literally aren’t even a part of it at this point.
Women are agreeable, that's why they follow ideas that sound good at face value like Veganism, which is actually another cult dedicated to human population control. why? the only people who are "fans" of earthling ed are other vegans. I have yet to see any vegan actually address this guys intellectual pitfalls and circular logic. In addition, he uses clickbait titles to drive media to his channel, which on the face devalues his entire argument, which supposedly comes from a morality sensibility. I don't think he has a morality argument, he has an ideology and is willing to achieve his ideas by any mean, by lying, which he does regularly, the clickbait titles alone are blatant lies. Why would anyone of any importance have him on, he is clearly a charlatan. I have never seen this dude on any other podcast either, only hardcore vegan zealots.

Not sure how often we have to repeat this to flesh-eating idiots. But Veganism is about minimizing death and suffering of animals. It’s not about being perfect. Clownish flesh-eaters try to hold us to an impossible standard, so they can feel better about imprisoning, tormenting, raping and slaughtering helpless animals.

@C. Ó Dubhlaoich Hello, as a vegan I only supplement on vitamin D3 (which is actually necessary for many people regardless of whether or not they eat animal products). You can get B12 in sea weeds, spirulina or a supplement. So it's only two supplements tops; the remaining nutrients are rather vast within plants. How many pills do you think many meat eaters have to take (especially as they get old)? you're joking if you think vegans supplement more than non vegans. Your comment immediately tells me you have no knowledge of nutrition, or the vegan population in today's date. Please do some research before embarrassing yourself publicly.
Why are there so many Syrian refugees in the US and UK? Because we destroyed their natural home. The same can be said with rodents and birds in crop fields. Animal agriculture takes up so much space, leaving less natural habitats for wildlife. If we were to rewild the environment I think we would see less of this problem.

You don’t even have to eat wheat and soy to be vegan and most non-vegans eat plenty of wheat and they also eat soy indirectly through livestock. The worst part is that it’s so darn disingenuous. They aren’t appalled at rodent deaths at all. They aren’t marching the streets and demanding we find alternate harvesting options. They just eat more animals directly in response which really shows their true colors. You can be vegan without killing animals directly or indirectly but you can’t avoid killing animals by eating animals. I guess ignorance really is bliss. Ugh!

Thank you for the content. Was looking around for more info on the matter and this definitely helped clear up some questions. @@Leviathan-mj8gi ah, I’m 100% certain that tofu isn’t grown anywhere…. As a product of the soy bean, it’s just as unlikely to be grown as a crop as spaghetti noodles.
I have been working in small scale plant agriculture for a few years, now transitioning to more permaculture driven practices, but one interesting thing I have noticed with vole and mouse pressure on crops in the field and hoop houses is when the mothers are building their nests and trying find safe places to raise their children they will usually be in the beds and places we might need to broad fork or lightly till so trying to remove the nests with the babies in them can be tricky without killing the babies, and just moving them yourself will most definitely end up with them dying another way, so I actually just uncover the first couple of layers of the nest to lightly exposed them and show our presence without* touching the babies. I will continue my work in another area to give the mother some time to come back and know she can move them and they will move their babies somewhere else (mostly likely within 50 ft), but still giving me open space to lightly work the beds without majorly disturbing them or outright killing them.
having lived in an agricultural central european country that focuses on milk production, fact is that fields are mowed 4 times per year. the hay is put in the barns for winter. mowing fields causes death to animals, and it is my observation that voles are the number one animal that die, but other animals too. For example, I have also seen deer-kits being killed. clearly, it is not only soy-bean fields that are harvested. in fact, for most crops for human consumption, the harvest is once a year. for cattle, it is four time, resulting in four times as many deaths to animals as for crops for human consumption. the argument that harvesting for human consumption kills, falls flat.
@@swagsurfer03sorry man there is a lot of vegans not all, who use it for a form of being better than others. It creates a debate about the things you want to talk about but it's overly confrontational and people get defensive.
Had this discussion with a friend yesterday. The debate kept going off on a tangent and I payed very close attention, trying to let him speak as much as possible without interrupting so I can hear what his belief system is. Always bringing it back to the original point after it going off really hammers home the point. Let the tangent happen, give your solid argument and then come back to the original point. It worked so well that he actually picked up on it and started to get really annoyed. At the start he disagreed with everything. In the end he admitted that he now agrees with everything that I was saying, but that my approach was really starting to piss him off. The final obstacle was hit, which was his ego. The ego is ALWAYS on the defense and hates being told it is wrong. And that's where I left the conversation. Him getting annoyed showed that his beliefs were being challenged, and at that point there is no need to continue. Definitely just venting off here, but my point being that it's always good to know when the conversation has to end. Any point that I ever get hung up on or couldn't remember something clearly, I always come back to Earthling Ed's EBOOK when I get home and fill in the holes of knowledge. (earthlinged.org/ebook ) And that's the best way to strengthen your point debating skills. Have debates, but then if you feel like you failed a topic on veganism, I promise you it will be in Ed's Ebook. It covers every argument. Its gold
Veganism is a sub optimal way of eating, did he cover that? Did he cover the fact that we evolved requiring essential amino acids and essential fatty acids to live optimally? Both sadly lacking in a poorly bio available, nutritionally thin vegan diet. I am a fully recovered cardiac arrest victim and CABG, who went clean vegan for the year afterwards and struggled and now on a ketogenic diet involving some animal foods I am off meds and my heart feels stronger since i transitioned and i am stronger in my olympic lifts and cardio routines. I have lived both lives and also understand the science behind it. Unfortunately you cannot see the right way forward for good health in my view.
@@JustSavageThings Well thats a great case study, but it doesn't hold much validity unfortunately. It's clear if you're saying veganism isn't the right way forward for good health you are ignorant on the topic. I don't take advice on healthy diets from people who are not professionals like me & yourself. We need that job to be done by nutritionists and dieticians. On top of that, the largest body of nutritionists and dieticians in the world - The American Dietetic Association released a peer reviewed statement saying that a vegan plant based diet is suitable for all stages of life, including pregnancy, and that humans can survive and thrive on the diet. As a counter argument, so many people have seen great results on a vegan diet, and reversed heart disease - and there is a lot of study's available showing this (check search engines). And for sports there are plenty of successful athletes that are fitter and stronger than you and me will ever be. Look online for vegan bodybuilders and powerlifters, ultra marathon runners (Game Changers on Netflix) is great start. Also for reliable data you need meta analysis anyway, which you haven't cited for your claims. Plus all fatty acids can be acquired from algae supplements (EPA & DHA) which are completely healthy, bio available & vegan :)
@@howiseetheworld3581 Well that’s interesting and mildly condescending but I’ll forgive you for that. I am far from ignorant on the topic. I’d say health, fitness , diet and nutrition are my raison d’etre and has been for 40 years. I’ve been a vegan. I researched Veganism as I research all things I am interested in and both sides of the argument. Do you? If so I’d look up the Doctors below for an honest and alternative and scientific approach to health and nutrition. Absolutely agree with going to professionals who cite ‘randomised control trials’ not epidemiological studies that are a shade above useless. I follow Dr Paul Mason, Dr Tim Noakes Dr Stephen Finley amongst others who I feel are honest and have real time examples in patients and regularly produce papers to back up their science. Dr Paul Mason also studies older papers that a lot of our modern misconceptions are derived from. What meta analysis have you produced to back up your claims? The American Dietetic Association! I would be interested to know what peers reviewed it and what tests they based their findings on and over what period of time. To be honest if I was in the US I would be happy to get everyone off the standard American diet with a vegan diet! Anything is better than that. However Veganism is not a one size fits all diet. Many people are sensitive to oxolates and lectins in plants and their health improves when they go on a non vegan ketogenic diet. For example, Psoriasis, eczema leaky gut, bloating and inflammation clears up. Red meat is the superfood that has everything in it including Omega 3 and vitamin C. I haven’t heard of anyone being allergic to meat. It is the most bio available nutritious food along with eggs that have the essentials for life. The nutrition in vegetables is diluted and is not as readily absorbed. Seed and vegetable oils are not stable at high temperatures and at normal temperatures they oxidise quickly (go off) without letting us know (animal foods smell when they are off and we don’t eat them). This is dangerous to health as you may be able to work out. They also do not have a healthy fat profile and are in fact bad for health at the best of times. Saturated fat on the other hand is not bad for health and have been proven to be good for health. More and more studies are coming out proving that we have all been duped since the early 80s when certain Doctors told everyone to eat less saturated fat and it was wholesale replaced by carbohydrates(a non essential macro!) and nuts seed/vegetable oils because Doctor’s on the whole no nothing of nutrition and diet. The demise of US/global health began their. Plants do not like being eaten and The anti nutrients inhibit the absorption of nutrients from other foods if eaten together. Beans being one. Tests have been done. As for algae based omegas See this link to a paper so don’t be so confident on it being completely healthy. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5387034/ Of course you can live on a vegan diet but I say not in optimal health. If a person comes to Veganism having spent their lives on the standard American/western diet of course they are going to feel and look better by virtue of the fact that they have removed all of the crap from their diet. They’d feel better if they fasted for 24 hours too for the same reason amongst others. On a personal level. I’ve trained for 40 years and competed to a high standard in sports. Being strong is genetic in large part. I’ve watch Game changers and I wouldn’t attribute someone being strong to veganism. They were strong before and in fact I would say if they came off a vegan diet and added animal products like eggs and red meats they would be even stronger. I am naturally strong in my Olympic and compound lifts but my strength increased when I came off the vegan diet along with lean body mass, low body fat and no bloating. My inflamed knees got better. Another study showed that patients who had major surgeries healed quicker on a carnivore diet than a vegan diet. While I don’t think veganism is necessarily a bad diet I don’t think it is a diet that will provide optimal health. I think without dangerous nuts and seeds oils a purely natural vegetable based diet is better than most alternatives but requires supplementation. So good luck with your health, watch your triglycerides levels, nuts and seed oils and your Vit K, iron and B12 ;)

Plants eat meat. Sustenance is exchange of life force. You can only defer some animal fat in your diet and kid yourself you are out of the food chain for so long before you are metabolically self cannibalizing. More and more vegans who came to this conclusion and did their research can give it to you if you prefer their point of view. They can cite the misinformation he cranks out “going deeper”. Not to mention the plant based diet supports the Monsanto travesty to the earth, seed destruction and manipulation of plant DNA.

I'm a vegetarian of 5 years trying to make heads or tales of this. One thing that resonated with me is that he said X amount of land is used for vegetable crops and a larger amount is used for animal crops. But per capita, what is the actual answer? Considering that a huge majority of people eat meat as a primary food source. What would the decimation be if the majority of people ate vegetables? This is an interesting question. Can anybody help? Thx.
The same land isn't used for animal crops. Cows for example can and usually do graze on land not usable for growing crops. Vegans conveniently ignore this.
Thank you for debunking so efficiently, all those false claims which are based on intentionally misinterpreted data, which are made mostly on JRE's podcasts by him or people who just want to make their point and get their message across. It's funny how the correct use of the same published data used by them, is making them look even more ridiculous than they already are, when they have the audacity to take a moral stand against people who are trying to conflict the less harm possible🖤🐰
@Novus Ordo Tough guy you are, killing an animal with no necessity whatsoever. Hopefully one day you'll understand how much more fulfilling a diet without any suffering can be.
@Novus Ordo I wonder which is worse: your staggering abundance of cognitive dissonance or your pathetically low quality of trolling attempts. Either way, grow up and/or educate yourself. "Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." - Mark Twain Having said that, I still hope you'll come to your senses one day. I wish you a joyful life without an unnecessarily unethical diet.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I'm not as articulate when arguing with non-vegans, so it's nice to have your videos as a tool to show them 🌱
Aside from all the debunking already mentioned, why do meat-eaters try to use this argument against plant-agriculture as if they don't also eat the plants and crops they're saying kills a ton of animals *as well as* all the animals killed for the meat they consume? So they're responsible for twice as many deaths if not more from eating both.
So true. When a meat eater has some broccoli on the side their by-kill is almost as large as mine. My portion size of broccoli is likely to be larger, but it’s a small difference of scale, not of kind.
My opinion, for what it is worth : I you want to live, you have to kill or eat dead organisms. Being animals or plants, you have to consume to live. There will be death, it is life. Now what you can do is work on how death happens, reduce suffering of animals and soil, or whatever helps you. Being conscious of it and acting even on a the smallest scale is great already. Just dont poison your life being too extreme in one way or another, life is about balance. Over producting, consuming, monocultivating, etc is bad for that balance.
This was explained SO well! The amount of time and effort I can only imagine it took to prepare this argument and create this video -- Ed you are doing such amazing work! Thank you!

Ah, the “perfect solution” logical fallacy. It’s a fallacy because there are no perfect solutions to any problem. Just because one can’t be a “perfect” vegan in an imperfect world is no excuse to not try to be the best vegan one can be. And that’s exactly how it’s stated by the Vegan Society: “Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. The phone I use, the Fairphone 3, is labelled as vegan, so it's certainly possible to do it without animal prodcuts. They also recycle a lot of materials, which leads to less mining and therefore less animal deaths, I assume? Either way, it's a stupid argument, the more I think about it. EDIT: After more research, the Fairphone is not "labelled as vegan", I just got that from a website that claimed it is. However, they still have plenty materials without a clear chain of production and won't call themselves vegan because of that.
This reminds me of the people that claim wind turbines are bad because they kill birds. Wind turbines kill about 234,000 birds a year, but feral and domestic cats kill 2,400,000,000. That's 2.4 BILLION birds killed by cats - FOUR orders of magnitude more than wind turbines.

@@soypusher5567 no the leftovers aren't used for animal feed, the bulk of soy is used for animal feed.

Joe Rogan will never debate any higher tier vegan debaters like Dr Avi Bitterman, the Nutrivore or Ask Yourself, and we all know why.
Next...

@Novus Ordo Thanks for letting me know 🤘
It’s a nice story, but it quickly made me uncomfortable as I thought about it.
But i don’t believe it-we don’t have any evidence to believe in such a simulation, we don’t have any way to know if all people within such a simulation would be conscious or not, *and it would be a grave mistake to think less of others based on a story.*
The world i’d like to live in is one similar to that depicted by a british philosopher when he was asked how the year 3000 will look like (*).

PLEASE become a politician and run for a position. Your way of thinking and open mindedness is really what we need for this country. More vegan politicians should be in office to make a difference on these kinds of issues. Anyway, keep making these videos and spreading awareness! I have been vegan for a while and didn't know these arguments were even being made. Thank you for further educating me ♡
Yeah .. you need a lot of education, it would appear
@user-cg7tw5yc9n sometimes I feel like vegans are the only ones that care about issues such as the environment or animal cruelty. Do you not agree ?
@tannakaobi1 I understand that. Everyone in my life is non-vegan, and thinks eating meat is an ecosystem thing. I personally feel like if we had farms where animals died due to natural causes, that would be a bit different. One of my friends grew up on a farm like that.
But i think businesses are too money hungry and throw ethics out the window.

That is awesome!!! Keep at it! I'm going on two decades!
Fuck yeah! You’re awesome! Thanks for going vegan & loving animals
Me too. Going vegan had a surprising effect on my mental health, to the point I got off my medication for depression and anxiety. My life situation has not changed either, just what I ate and my moral stance about what I put on my plate. I still wonder if veganism has a studied impact on mental health, I haven’t found anything so far.
l relate to everything you said, literally. I was also a vegetarian for years and turned vegan 7 months ago. I never felt better in my whole life.
There's nothing wrong with eating eggs
I pray this movement continues to gain huge momentum over the next few years.

Ed, I was going to put in a request for you to do a video on this subject, so glad to see you do it
I wish I could discuss with non vegans as Ed.

Wow, didn't realize anti-vegans had such concern for the lives of mice.
They'll pretend to care for anything, as long as they don't actually have to do anything lol
No they don’t, but they assume you do.
I could say the same about vegans when they argue that meat is unhealthy. Why are you concerned about my health?
Why does anybody care what anyone else does?
I don't care about mice
The silly thing about this is there’s a huge difference between intentionally shooting a cow and eating them vs unintentionally trampling a field mouse. Also the non vegans who use this argument forget that they and the animals they eat also eat plants. It’s not like we’re the only ones eating plants.
This whole argument is silly. Veganism is about doing the least harm. Perfection is impossible, but we can try our best.

It’s incredible that you even had to explain that...
Oh, how caring person you are! Thank you 🙂
LOVE THIS
having lived in an agricultural central european country that focuses on milk production, fact is that fields are mowed 4 times per year. the hay is put in the barns for winter. mowing fields causes death to animals, and it is my observation that voles are the number one animal that die, but other animals too.
No one is trying to act better than you. You are just projecting your own insecurities if you feel that way. It’s about the animals not you.
(earthlinged.org/ebook )
And that's the best way to strengthen your point debating skills.
@@howiseetheworld3581 No one practices veganism so apparently it is hard.
I would be interested to know what peers reviewed it and what tests they based their findings on
and over what period of time.
As for algae based omegas
See this link to a paper so don’t be so confident on it being completely healthy.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5387034/
Of course you can live on a vegan diet but I say not in optimal health.

Because vegans act so self righteous as if they never do anything wrong when it comes to animals.

“Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. @@FranciscoAlvarezTV I just did a minimum amount of looking this up on Ecosia and Google and here's what I found: There can be animal parts in the glue used in some phones, but it's not sure how much or if any at all, as it's difficult to check the production line. The phone I use, the Fairphone 3, is labelled as vegan, so it's certainly possible to do it without animal prodcuts.
